Every Husker on a United Football League roster

The start of the spring season of professional football is right around the corner.

The start of the spring season of professional football is right around the corner. The United Football League will kick off its inaugural season in 2024.

The professional football league results from a merger between XFL and the United States Football League. This version of the UFL is not connected to the United Football League, which played from 2009 to 2012.

The modern UFL will feature eight teams with two divisions, the XFL Division and the USFL Division. Nebraska will be represented on five of the league’s eight rosters.

You can scroll below to find each of the five former Cornhuskers below. The UFL will kick off its inaugural season on Saturday, March 30.

Former Husker signed to NFL practice squad

A former Nebraska Cornhusker has been signed to an NFL practice squad. The Cincinnati Bengals signed Garrett Nelson on Tuesday afternoon.

Nelson was undrafted in 2023 and was signed by the Maimi Dolphins as an undrafted free agent. During that time, Nelson recorded five tackles and one sack.

In four seasons at Nebraska, Nelson played in 38 games, totaling 167 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, and 12 sacks. In 2022, the linebacker was a team captain and was selected All-Big Ten Second-Team.

Nelson did have one year of eligibility remaining but decided to declare for the NFL draft following the conclusion of the 2022 season.

Dolphins hosting two defensive players for pre-draft visits

The front seven may seem set, but they could add more young talent.

With the 2023 NFL draft less than a month away, the Miami Dolphins, along with the other 31 teams, have turned their attention toward the prospects who could join their organizations from the collegiate game.

Miami has already reportedly met with TCU running back Kendre Miller, but now they’re adding some defensive players to their list. According to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, the Dolphins are having Nebraska edge rusher Garrett Nelson and Bowling Green defensive tackle Karl Brooks in for pre-draft visits.

Nelson played four years at Nebraska, recording 167 tackles (26 for a loss), 12 sacks and two forced fumbles in 38 career games. He isn’t exactly the most talented player on the field, but his effort has been heralded. Miami would likely be able to grab him on Day 3.

Brooks played five seasons at Bowling Green, recording 167 tackles (27.5 for a loss), 27.5 sacks and five forced fumbles in 49 career games. NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein believes he could be a starter in the right scheme at the pro level. Still, mock drafts have him going between Day 2 and early Day 3.

The Dolphins have a lot of talent in their front seven with Christian Wilkins, Zach Sieler, Emmanuel Ogbah, Raekwon Davis, Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb as notable names. However, the trio of interior defenders – Wilkins, Sieler and Davis – are all set to be free agents at the end of the year. Ogbah could also be released to clear $13.8 million in cap space.

General manager Chris Grier has done a great job adding talented young players to a roster full of veterans, and he’ll need to continue doing exactly that, but now he has fewer picks to do it with.

Offensive/Defensive Players of the Week from Nebraska’s win over Rutgers

Here are the Offensive/Defensive Players of the Week from Nebraska’s win over Rutgers

The Nebraska Cornhuskers moved to 3-3 with a 14-13 victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Friday night. The Cornhuskers are now 2-1 under interim head coach Mickey Joseph.

Offensively, the Cornhuskers got off to a slow start, as they put up zero points in the first half. However, they bounced back and scored two touchdowns in the second half.

Defensively, they continued to show rapid improvement. Over the last two weeks, their defense has given up a combined 34 points. In their prior two games, they allowed a combined 94 points.

Let’s take a look at the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week.

Here are the Offensive/Defensive Players of the Week from Nebraska’s win over Indiana

On Saturday, the Nebraska Cornhuskers secured their first victory under interim head coach Mickey Joseph. They defeated the Indiana Hoosiers 35-21.

It was a significant win for Nebraska in many ways. It moved their conference record up to 1-1, which keeps them alive in the Big Ten West. At the moment, six of the seven teams in the division have a conference record of 1-1; Wisconsin is the lone team at 0-2.

In addition, Indiana was a solid opponent. They entered the game with a 3-1 record including victories over Illinois and Western Kentucky.

Offensive/Defensive Players of the Week from Nebraska’s Win Over North Dakota

Here are the Offensive/Defensive Players of the Week from Nebraska’s win over North Dakota

On September 3, the Nebraska Cornhuskers secured their first victory of the season against the North Dakota Fighting Hawks 38-17.

Despite the final score, this was a close game. At halftime, the game was tied 7-7, and North Dakota’s offense was able to enjoy sustained drives against Nebraska’s defense.

Nevertheless, it is great to get a win on the board, and there were some positive takeaways.

On offense, Nebraska’s rushing attack led the way, as the Cornhuskers racked up 244 rushing yards. Meanwhile, quarterback Casey Thompson completed 14 out of 21 passes for 193 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

Without further ado, here are Nebraska’s offensive and defensive players of the week.

2022 Husker Breakdown: Linebackers could be among Big Ten’s best

With Luke Reimer, Garrett Nelson and more, the Huskers’ linebackers provide a proven and stable presence that will lead their DC Erik Chinander’s defense

Stability is a beautiful thing in football and that Nebraska’s linebackers in 2022 will bring just that. The group was among the team’s best last season, with three Huskers in the top 16 in the Big Ten in tackles.

The heart and soul of the group was JoJo Domann, who was unsurprisingly drafted by the Indianapolis Colts following a second team All-American recognition from the Associated Press. Domann was elite in every phase of coverage last year but although it sounds far-fetched, there’s potential for the Cornhuskers to completely offset the loss of him.

The starting group is all but locked in, with Caleb Tannor and Garrett Nelson ever-present on the outside pairing with all-Big Ten honorable mention pick Luke Reimer and Nick Henrich on the inside. After switching from a 3-4 to 4-3 look this year, the Huskers may still find a way to put those four on the field for a majority of snaps. Barring injuries or outside circumstances, the quartet will constitute Nebraska’s hallmark this season, plain and simple.

With head coach Scott Frost being a former linebacker himself, former NFL star Barrett Ruud manning the inside linebackers and Mike Dawson, a 4-year NFL coaching vet, coaching the Huskers’ edge rushers, success is to be expected.

That crew went out and landed prized transfer Ochaun Mathis from TCU and his presence on the defensive line adds to the pressure felt by opposing offensive lines. The Huskers didn’t exactly have a edge rusher of his caliber last year and Mathis may line up as a linebacker in a two-point stance on some occasions.

Each starting linebacker brings something different to the table: Tannor is dependable, Nelson plays a large leadership role, Reimer is a tackle machine and Henrich is gifted in the open field. A number of 2nd stringers had impressive practices in the spring and fall so Nebraska’s linebackers may be as deep as they’ve been in years.

Nebraska names team captains for 2022

Three blackshirts and one tight end have been elected by their teammates.

The 2022 Nebraska Cornhuskers have announced their team captains for the season. Three of the four players selected for the teamwide honor will play on the defensive side of the ball for the Huskers this year. Edge rushers Caleb Tannor, Garrett Nelson, and inside linebacker Nick Henrich are joined by tight end Travis Vokolek were announced on Saturday night.

Head coach Scott Frost said the team would name captains and award Blackshirts before leaving for Dublin. Given that the departure date from Lincoln is set for Monday, the timing of the announcement isn’t all that surprising. The Huskers will start the 2022 season next week when they take on the Northwestern Wildcats in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Dublin, Ireland, at Aviva Stadium on Saturday, August 27th.

Stay tuned to Cornhuskers Wire as we’ll have coverage of all the news and notes leading up to the kickoff from Dublin, Ireland. The start of the season is less than one week away.

A look at Nebraska’s Big Ten Media Day

Nebraska’s day in Indianapolis is complete!

Nebraska completed its Big Ten Media Day on Tuesday morning. Scott Frost and company were the first team to talk to the media in Indianapolis this year. A photo recap of the day can be found below. Iowa Hawkeyes 2022 schedule breakdown: Nebraska

What players do Iowa fans need to know about for the Hawkeyes’ regular-season finale against the Cornhuskers from inside Kinnick Stadium?

Here it is, the last game of the season! Hopefully, Iowa is standing at an 11-0 record with upsets over Ohio State and Michigan and the Cornhuskers represent their last stop before the Big Ten Championship… and then the national championship. Whether or not this is indeed the reality (we can certainly hope), Nebraska is a heck of a game to end the season on.

The Cornhuskers are an extremely interesting team with how they are portrayed in the media. Many have called Nebraska the greatest three-win team in college football history and suggesting that they were much better than their 2021 record suggested. If a few possessions swung the other way, Nebraska could have finished as one of the best teams in the conference!

At the end of the day, though, the Cornhuskers were still a 3-9 team last year, and coach Scott Frost is on the hottest of hot seats. As many have pointed out, Nebraska is a tough out. They gave multiple top teams a tough fight last year, including both Michigan and Michigan State. They feature a sturdy defense and hope the offense takes a step forward in 2022.
