Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce combine for outstanding Chiefs franchise record

#Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and TE Travis Kelce combined to set a franchise record for Kansas City in Week 7 against the #Chargers.

The Kansas City Chiefs put together a dominant performance against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday night and seemed to be in rhythm on both sides of the ball when the Week 7 tilt concluded.

While their showing in divisional games has historically been stellar in the Patrick Mahomes era, the reigning MVP managed to make history in this game in one particular area when he threw a touchdown to Travis Kelce early in the matchup.

With Mahomes’ second-quarter touchdown connection with Kelce, the pair set the Chiefs’ franchise record for most scores between a quarterback-receiver duo. Kelce’s catch marked his 50th six-point reception with Mahomes under center, and the duo is just one score shy of tying New Orleans Saints legends Drew Brees and Jimmy Graham for fourth place on the NFL’s all-time leaderboard.

Be sure to keep your eye on Kansas City’s terrible twosome as the Chiefs move through their 2023 schedule to see if Mahomes and Kelce can once more combine to mark their place in the history books.

Bears are just 279 rushing yards away from setting single-season franchise record

The #Bears will break a single-season franchise record if they can gain just under 300 rushing yards over their next two games

For all the ups and downs (mostly downs) of the Chicago Bears’ 2022 campaign, their impressive ability to run the ball with Justin Fields, David Montgomery, and Khalil Herbert has been nothing short of spectacular to watch on Sundays. They currently lead the NFL in total rushing yards, and with contributions from Darrynton Evans, Trestan Ebner, and their various speedy receivers, the team has a real chance to break their single-season franchise rushing yardage record over the next two weeks.

They’ll need to average just under 150 rushing yards per game to accomplish this herculean feat, but with the talent at their disposal and lack of an established passing game, they just might be able to make it happen. Justin Fields has rushed for over 100 yards in two contests this season and has gone for more than eighty yards in four others.

Coupled with Montgomery and Herbert, Fields has a legitimate shot to help lead the Bears to a win in Week 17 with Chicago’s ground game playing a featured role when they take the field. Head coach Matt Eberflus knows that his team isn’t in contention for the playoffs and that setting a new high over a long-held franchise record could be the lipstick on this pig of his first season at the helm of the Bears organization.

The previous franchise-best mark for rushing yards in a season was set by the 1984 Bears team led by legendary running back Walter Payton, who rushed for 1,684 yards, the second-most in a single season in his career.

Though they won’t have the benefit of an all-time great running back to help push them over the 279-yard threshold in these final games, Fields’ abilities should serve the Bears well as they look to break this record. The end is in sight for Chicago’s season, and setting this high-water mark would be their most impressive team accomplishment to date.

Evan Engram breaks Jaguars record with fast start vs. Jets

Evan Engram is breaking franchise records during his first season with the Jaguars.

Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Evan Engram started strong against the New York Jets on Thursday, catching five passes for 83 receiving yards in the first half.

That fast start was enough to secure Engram the Jaguars’ franchise record for receptions in a season by a tight end.

The record previously belonged to Kyle Brady, who finished the 2000 season with 64 receptions for 729 yards and three touchdowns. On Thursday, Engram recorded his 65th reception of the season and rumbled down the left sideline for a 36-yard gain.

After the first half, Engram had 693 receiving yards and four touchdowns on the year.

Engram joined the Jaguars in the offseason on a one-year, $9 million deal after spending the first five years of his career with the New York Giants. Last week, Engram told ESPN’s Michael DiRocco that he’s hopeful he can return to the Jaguars in 2023.

With just a little bit more production, Engram will likely own every single-season receiving record for a Jaguars tight end. And it’ll be hard for the team not to make keeping him in the offseason a top priority.

Dameon Pierce has amassed second-most yards through 10 games as a rookie in Texans history

Pierce made another appearance in the #Texans’ record book after his performance against the #Commanders in Week 11

The Houston Texans’ 2022 campaign is in a tailspin, but that doesn’t mean that their impressive rookie running back Dameon Pierce isn’t continuing to make headway in the franchise record book. Though his Week 11 performance left something to be desired, he still managed to get into the top two among Texans rookies all time for yardage through his first 10 games.

His 915 yards from scrimmage are second only to Domanick Williams, who tallied 1002 in 2003. Pierce placed ahead of the third-place back, Steve Slaton, in the category by 16 yards and is poised to put himself in a position to continue racking up the accolades as the season continues.

Part of the disappointment for Houston in their Week 11 loss was the sparing usage of Pierce, who only saw 10 carries on the ground and three targets through the air in the game. Clearly, his talent warrants that he is more utilized on the Texans’ struggling offense, and the coaching staff was remiss to limit his involvement in a matchup where it didn’t seem that they were overly concerned with pursuing their second win of the season.

For Pierce, this season has put his abilities at center stage on a weekly basis despite Houston’s struggles. His hard-nosed running style has played well with the Texans’ gritty identity, and perhaps with better quarterback play to take the heat off of Pierce as the feature back, he could blossom into one of the premier running backs in the NFL.

It is unlikely that Davis Mills will take the necessary step forward to keep defenses on their toes, and Pierce will likely have to wait for next season to reach his full potential on a wholly competent offense. For now, though, the weekly reminders of his excellence will serve as a bastion of hope for Texans fans who need a little positivity amid the team’s skid back to being the league’s doormat.

Dameon Pierce set a franchise-best mark against Giants in Week 10

Pierce saw his name rise to the top of the #Texans’ franchise leaderboard for rookie production through the first nine games of a season

Anyone who has followed the Houston Texans’ 2022 campaign is well aware of the team’s outstanding rookie running back Dameon Pierce, who has taken the league by storm this year. His exceptional ability to keep his legs churning and hit even the smallest gap for serious yardage is a glimpse at the future of Texans football and has been an exciting development on an otherwise unexciting season.

With his 122 yards from scrimmage on Sunday against the New York Giants, Pierce put himself atop Houston’s all-time list for most games with 100 or more yards through the first nine games of a rookie season. Previously tied with Domanick Davis’ 2003 effort with five such games, Pierce was able to ground and pound his way to a sixth effort of this nature with his expert rushing skills and soft hands in the passing game.

For reference, former Texans receiver Will Fuller is tied for fourth place with Wali Lundy on the list with two games of 100 yards or more in their outstanding 2016 and 2006 campaigns respectively. While Lundy may not have been an all-time great Texan, Fuller was certainly an impact player for the team before they cut him loose in 2021, and was among the most impressive receivers in his draft class.

As Pierce continues to rack up stats at an unfathomable rate he is sure to continue finding his name atop more franchise rookie leaderboards before the 2022 season ends. The team’s abysmal 1-7-1 record has in no way been an indication of the running back’s effort in the failed season and serves as a reminder that even as a team implodes, there can still be marvelous performances taking place on a week-to-week basis.

The 2022 campaign may be a total loss for Houston at this point, but the valuable experience and accolades that Pierce has soaked up over the Texans’ first nine games will surely prove to be invaluable to his development into one of the NFL’s most capable and feared running backs.

WATCH: Myles Garrett secures first sack of the day against Jets, .5 away from franchise record

Garrett brought down Joe Flacco to bring himself within half a sack of the #Browns’ franchise record.

The Cleveland Browns are up early against the New York Jets due in no small part to the play of their defense. Star defensive end Myles Garrett has been a key piece for them in the Week 2 matchup and came up with a clutch sack of Joe Flacco to put him within half a sack of the franchise record.

Check out the play here that has Garrett within striking distance of history:

Since joining the Browns in 2017, Garrett has been one of the premier pass rushers in the NFL and is a constant threat to every quarterback he faces. With more plays like this one, Cleveland could put themselves in full control of this matchup well before the fourth quarter whistle.

If he can get to Flacco one more time, Garrett will have sole possession of the Browns’ franchise sack record, passing Clay Matthews.

This sack set up a strip sack by Jadeveon Clowney later in the drive to give the Browns possession with a chance to go up by two scores in the second quarter. After kicking off to start the game, Cleveland will receive the second-half kick with a chance to pile on in their effort to escape this matchup undefeated with a 2-0 record.

Stay tuned to Browns Wire for updates throughout the game.

Marcus Williams leaves Saints ranked 8th all-time in interceptions

With Marcus Williams expected to join the Ravens, he’d leave the Saints tied for 8th all-time in career interceptions, via @RossJacksonNOLA:

The New Orleans Saints’ 2017 draft class has already left its stamp in NFL lore by producing the league’s Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year in the same season. But it’s not just Alvin Kamara and Marshon Lattimore that will leave their mark on the Saints franchise record books. As observed by friend of the blog Evan Saacks on Twitter, 2017 second-round safety Marcus Williams will leave the Saints tied for eighth all-time in interceptions after just five seasons.

William’s total of 15 regular season interceptions also tops the team since he was drafted. He is now set to depart New Orleans in favor of the Baltimore Ravens who have offered him a five-year $70 million deal. The contract averages $14 million per year in total value, which is below the $16 million to $17 million he was projected to receive. Regardless, Williams’ play has earned him this deal which ranks fifth among NFL free safeties in average per year.

By the way, not far behind Williams is fellow 2017 draft pick cornerback Marshon Lattimore. With 13 interceptions and a contract running through the 2026 season, Lattimore’s average of three picks per season would add another 15 to his ledger. Let’s see where that would place Lattimore and who Williams will leave ranked amongst in franchise history:

Thunder score franchise-record 83 points in 1st half vs. Timberwolves

The OKC Thunder scored 83 points in the first half against the Minnesota Timberwolves, setting a franchise record.

That Oklahoma City Thunder loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday was just a tease. With perimeter players Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Theo Maledon and Lu Dort back from the injury list on Saturday, OKC posted a franchise record 83 points in the first half.

They played fast on offense and in transition, moved the ball well, shot extremely well and forced turnovers.

The Thunder scored the first 10 points of the game. By the end of the first quarter, they had 43 points, the most they had scored in an opening frame since Feb. 22, 2018, when they posted 44 against the Sacramento Kings.

Oklahoma City didn’t slow down in the second quarter, scoring 40 more points to take an 83-62 lead into the half.

Eighty-three points. Franchise record.

Where to start?

Let’s go with transition play. The Thunder had 32 fast break points. They scored 10 points off five turnovers in the first quarter and then forced two more turnovers in the second quarter. They seemingly looked to run every time downcourt, and it served them well.

Backup center Mike Muscala was perfect in the half, making all seven shots and scoring 22 points. Most impressively, this wasn’t even from his 3-point shooting. He went 6-for-6 from the free throw line and had two and-ones.

Normally a threat from 3, Muscala had as many three-point plays from getting fouled at the rim as he did from beyond the arc.

Guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 14 points, five rebounds and five assists while forward Darius Bazley had 11 points and four rebounds.

Kenrich Williams, again in the starting lineup in place of center Al Horford, had eight points, as did Lu Dort.

All nine Thunder players who appeared scored. As a team, they shot 60.4% from the field, 52.6% from 3 and 78.9% from the free throw line.

Perhaps more impressive than every Thunder player scoring is that every Thunder player except one tallied at least one assist. After tying a season-high 28 assists on Friday, Oklahoma City put itself on pace to smash that number with 22 in the first half on Saturday.

That excellent passing and ballhanding resulted in only three turnovers, one of which was a 24-second shot clock violation.

It’s an understatement to say this was the best half of Oklahoma City’s season. The Thunder dominated. The Timberwolves couldn’t do a thing to stop them.

Eighty-three points.

Tune into the second half now.

Tyler Lockett sets Seahawks record for most catches in a season

Seattle wide receiver Tyler Lockett set the Seahawks franchise record for most catches in a season with his 95th of the year in Week 17.

The Seattle Seahawks wide receivers had a heck of a day during their Week 17 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 17.

Sophomore wide receiver DK Metcalf broke Steve Largent’s 35-year-old record for most receiving yards in a single season. Veteran wideout Tyler Lockett set a new record of his own.

On his seventh catch of the game and his 95th of the year, Lockett also set a new franchise record for most receptions in a single season.

Lockett also became just the sixth Seahawk in team history to log back-to-back 1000-yard seasons.

Here’s a look at his fourth-quarter touchdown.

DK Metcalf sets Seahawks record for single-season receiving yards

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf has set a franchise record for single-season receiving yards, breaking Steve Largent’s of 35 years.

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf needed just six receiving yards in the Week 17 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers to break Steve Largent’s long-standing record for single-season receiving yards at 1,287, which was set in 1985.

Metcalf easily beat the record that stood for 35 years in the first half of the game Sunday afternoon with a four-yard catch to set the new record.

“Just to break a record that’s been standing for so long it’s just a blessing just to be in this position and an amazing opportunity I have in front of me,” Metcalf said.

Metcalf, only in his sophomore season, is having an impressive year, to say the least. For his efforts, he received a Pro Bowl nod, joining Brian Blades as only the second Seahawk to earn the honor in his first two seasons.

At the half, the Seahawks lead the 49ers 6-3 and Metcalf has two catches for nine yards on five targets so far.
