Foot surgery complete, here’s what Cowboys’ DeMarcus Lawrence likely is dealing with and what game he should be back by

A look at Lawrence’s specific injury, what the real timeframe is and who is around to fill in for him. | From @StarConscience

The Dallas Cowboys have had a rough start to the 2021 season, and it’s only been one week. La’el Collins is currently suspended for five games, Randy Gregory is under COVID protocol, Michael Gallup is out for 3-5 weeks with a calf strain, and Donovan Wilson is dealing with a nagging groin issue that could force him to miss time.

That’s potentially four starters lost from a team looking to bounce back from a 6-10 campaign in 2020. However, on Wednesday, the Cowboys suffered another huge loss when DeMarcus Lawrence, the team’s best pass rusher and run defender, broke a bone in his foot. Head coach Mike McCarthy noted on Thursday that Lawrence has already had successful surgery to fix the issue and will be out for 6-8 weeks.

Cowboys Wire’s Rafael Vela has secured the following external opinion as to where the damage is and how the timeline for his return likely is constructed.

The fifth metatarsal is a bone in the fleshy part of the foot, not on an extended toe. Sometimes a fracture is a simple crack but as this required surgery it’s likely a displaced injury to the bone, meaning it may have splintered or twisted or been physically displaced.

Surgery may have inserted a pin or a plate to stabilize the bone and this will aid in and greatly increase the odds of full healing.

It will take six weeks for the bone to heal completely. Then add conditioning time and that may add an additional 1-2 more weeks to the time table. If he’s working hard in a pool and doing other things to maintain cardiovascular shape, 6 weeks ison the optimistic end of the window, but more than likely at least 8 weeks will be necessary before he returns to the field.

That timeline would have Lawrence returning in time for the club’s November 14 home game against the Atlanta Falcons, one week prior to taking on the Kansas City Chiefs on the road.

With the Cowboys hitting the road this week to face the Los Angeles Chargers and quarterback Justin Herbert, who is one of the league’s more mobile passers, the loss of Lawrence is brutal, especially if Gregory can’t get two negative COVID tests before Sunday. To counter this blow the Cowboys will need help from a plethora of players.

Dorance Armstrong will start at left defensive end with Lawrence out. This opportunity couldn’t have come at a better time for him as he is playing for his first lucrative payday. He’s shown gradual improvement each season since he was taken in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL draft. Armstrong will be looking to build off of a great showing in training camp and the preseason.

Veteran Tarell Basham will see an increased role which will likely lead to him starting on Sunday against the Chargers if Gregory can’t go. Bradlee Anae, the Cowboy’s fifth-round pick in 2020, will also see more playing time after just six defensive snaps as a rookie.

Rookie linebacker Micah Parsons is a key player to watch during Lawrence’s absence also. With his experience as a defensive end during his high school days, defensive coordinator Dan Quinn used Parsons to rush the passer during training camp. Also, the former Nittany Lion got guidance from Lawrence and future Hall of Fame pass rusher DeMarcus Ware on how to be more effective getting to the quarterback. With Lawrence off the field, look for Parsons pass rush responsibilities to increase.

There’s another rookie who will need to show his worth with Lawrence out. Chauncey Golston, who the Cowboys took in the third round in April, dealt with a hamstring issue that occurred during the first day of training camp in Oxnard and kept him on the PUP list until he passed a physical in late August. With his ability to rush from the edge and the interior, the Cowboys will need Golston to step up and build off of the momentum he created in OTAs and minicamp.

Lawrence won’t be easily replaced and the Cowboys will need all of the aforementioned players to keep their pass rush afloat until his return.

The Seattle Seahawks were without defensive end Carlos Dunlap Week 14 against the New York Jets but things could be different this Sunday in Washington.

Despite his lingering foot injury, coach Pete Carroll said Dunlap is planning on playing this week.

“I’ll know way more Wednesday, but he is planning to play, that’s his thought that he’s going to be able make it back,” Carroll told reporters during his Monday press conference. “We’ve got to get through the week and find out how he handles it, but his intention is to get back to play.”

Dunlap was inactive against the Jets in an attempt to “slow down” his foot injury. Perhaps after a light practice week, he’ll be a go on Sunday against the Washington Football Team.

The Seahawks return to practice at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center on Wednesday.

Seahawks DE Carlos Dunlap will be game-time decision on Sunday

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Carlos Dunlap (foot injury) will be a game-time decision on Sunday against the New York Jets in Week 14.

The Seattle Seahawks hope to have Carlos Dunlap in the lineup on Sunday against the New York Jets in Week 14 but the defensive end is going to be a game-time decision with a foot injury.

“Carlos Dunlap, we’re going to go all the way to game time on that one,” coach Pete Carroll told reporters Friday. “We’re going to work him out in pregame and make sure he’s OK, give him every day of rest to make sure that we’ve protected him as much as possible and hope that he can play, but we’ll determine that on gameday.”

Dunlap, who was able to play last week on his injured foot, is officially listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report.

Chris Carson logs success 1st outing back from foot injury

Seattle Seahawks running back Chris Carson logged a successful first outing back from his foot injury in Week 12 against the Eagles on MNF.

Pete Carroll and the Seattle Seahawks had been longing for the return of starting running back Chris Carson, who had been out for over a month while he recovered from a lingering foot injury.

Carson made his return in Week 12 against the Eagles and his first outing was a success.

“His style of play, we just love it so much,” Carroll said during his Tuesday interview on 710 ESPN Seattle. “He just looked terrific and I’m hoping he comes out of the game feeling alright and he didn’t get banged up much and can keep doing it next week.”

While Carlos Hyde did have considerably more snaps and carries (15) in Philadelphia, Carson did finish the night with a respectable eight touches and more rushing yards at 41. Carson also managed a touchdown in the first half.

“Carlos played good too, but it was really Chris had the bigger plays on this night,” Carroll continued. “That touchdown run was really just a fantastic play.”

Seahawks RB Chris Carson scores his 1st TD since returning from injury

Seattle Seahawks running back Chris Carson scored his first touchdown since returning from injury during the Week 12 game against the Eagles.

Seattle Seahawks running back Chris Carson finally stepped on the football field on a game day for the first time since Oct. 25. Cleared to finally play in Week 12 after nursing a foot injury, Carson made the most of his appearance against the Eagles in Philadelphia.

On Monday night, Carson scored his first rushing touchdown since his return when he punched one in for 16 yards in the second quarter of action. The scoring drive went seven plays for 66 yards in 3:58 and gave the Seahawks the 14-0 lead over the Eagles.

Seattle is hoping to have a healthy Carson – and Carlos Hyde – as the Seahawks made a serious push for the postseason.

Here’s Carson’s Week 12 TD.

Seahawks running back Chris Carson should be full-go against Eagles

Seattle Seahawks running back Chris Carson should be full-go in Week 12 against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night.

The Seattle Seahawks have been patiently awaiting the return of starting running back Chris Carson, who has missed the last month as he nursed a foot injury.

Carson practiced throughout the week and was not listed with a designation on Friday’s injury report, meaning he is set to play in Week 12 against the Eagles in Philadelphia on Monday night.

Coach Pete Carroll confirmed the news after the Saturday walkthrough.

“He looks really good to me,” Carroll told reporters. “He looks explosive and in great shape. He’s got fresh legs benefit, you can feel it, change direction all that stuff.

“So he’s really raring to go, yeah he’s full-go.”

The Seahawks and Eagles will square off Monday night at 5:15 p.m. PT. Here’s everything you need to know to catch the action.

Seahawks RB Chris Carson expected back in time to face Eagles Week 12

Seattle Seahawks running back Chris Carson is expected back from his foot injury in time to face the Philadelphia Eagles Week 12.

The Seattle Seahawks have been without running back Chris Carson for nearly the last month as he battled a foot injury. While the Seahawks’ run game did see some improvement against the Cardinals with Carlos Hyde back in action, having Carson available to face the Eagles Week 12 would be a huge boost to Seattle’s offense.

Coach Pete Carroll confirmed Carson’s return for Philadelphia is a very real possibility.

“Man, I wish you guys could see Chris right now,” Carroll said before his Friday press conference officially began. “He’s killing it!”

Hyde performed admirably Thursday night but Carroll is really looking ahead to when he can have the one-two ounch from both running backs on the field.

“[The] toughness that that shows and that impact is what Chris brings, Chris is that,” Carroll said. “During the night I was imagining if we had Carlos and Chris running, what that would be like in terms of the style of play.”

Next week’s practice participation reports will give a better indication of where Carson is ahead of the matchup.

Because the Seahawks played on a short week, they now have a bit of an extended break before squaring off against the Eagles a week from Monday night.

Tight end Greg Olsen suffers foot injury in Seattle’s win over Arizona

Seahawks tight end Greg Olsen suffered a foot injury in Seattle’s win over the Arizona Cardinals Week 11 during “Thursday Night Football.”

The Seattle Seahawks might have beaten the Arizona Cardinals Thursday night but it came at a price. Tight end Greg Olsen had to leave the matchup after suffering a foot injury late in the game. He was ruled out shortly thereafter.

Coach Pete Carroll gave an update on Olsen’s status after the win.

“It’s a little early, but he has a fascia-tear injury that he’s had before in his other foot. He knows exactly what it is. Sometimes when it ruptures like it did – we think – it’s the best thing for a quick recovery.

“So we’ll see what happens and wish him the best – hopefully he can make it back.”

Carroll did not rule out Olsen’s return this season, reiterating it is too early to be making a firm prognosis.

Seahawks running backs Chris Carson, Carlos Hyde made it through week

Seattle Seahawks running backs Chris Carson and Carlos Hyde made it through the week and could play Thursday night against the Cardinals.

The Seattle Seahawks might see the return of a couple of running backs this week, just in time to face off against the Arizona Cardinals for “Thursday Night Football.”

Starter Chris Carson (foot) and Carlos Hyde (hamstring) both got some work in this week. Hyde was even a full participant on Wednesday and is no longer listed on the injury report.

“They did make it through the week and Carlos looked strong throughout,” coach Pete Carroll said after the walkthrough. “With Chris, we’re going to wait until tomorrow to see what we’re doing with it, but he did practice and looked good in all the stuff that he did.

“We’re real close with Chris, and feeling really good that Carlos will be out there.”

Carson did not practice on Wednesday but was a limited participant on Tuesday afternoon. He has been designated as questionable against Arizona.

Travis Homer is doubtful, listed with wrist, knee and thumb injuries.

Gametime is set for 5:20 p.m. PT Thursday night at CenturyLink Field. The official inactives list will be released 90 minutes prior to kickoff.

Seahawks running backs Chris Carson and Carlos Hyde up and running

Seattle Seahawks running backs Chris Carson and Carlos Hyde are both running; coach Pete Carroll is hopeful they can play the Rams Week 10.

[jwplayer bkhB5hxO-ThvAeFxT]

The Seattle Seahawks have been plagued by injuries at the running back position as of late, prompting them to add former ‘Hawk Alex Collins to the practice squad then elevating him to the roster Week 9 for game day. Coach Pete Carroll is hoping he’ll see some of his injured players return in time to face the Rams.

Seahawks running backs Chris Carson and Carlos Hyde are both up and running, a good sign both could make it back this week.

“Carlos (Hyde) will be working this week to try to get back, so we’ll see what that means on Wednesday, Thursday, but he is running and he is working with the thought that if he can make through the week that he could,” Carroll said Monday afternoon.

Hyde has missed the last couple of matchups with a hamstring injury, so the fact that he is running again is promising for the Seahawks’ backfield.

“Chris in the same boat really,” Carroll explained of starter, Chris Carson. “I got an update just now that he’s got a chance, and we’ll have to see how he tolerates the work – he’s already out running and working on is cutting and stuff like that, so that’s a good statement going into Wednesday, and we’ll see how that works. I had hoped that we would get a look at him last week on Friday, that’s what we had planned to do, it just didn’t work out. So we’ll see as we’re going, it’s encouraging though.”

Carson, who has been battling a foot injury, has been sorely missed in Seattle’s offense. If he and Hyde are available in Los Angeles, the Seahawks will be in a much better position when they face off against the Rams.
