Clemson falls to Florida State in a heartbreaking overtime loss

Clemson dropped a heartbreaker in Death Valley.

Dabo Swinney and Clemson suffered a heartbreaking loss Saturday in Death Valley as Florida State took down the Tigers 27-24.

Clemson (2-2, 0-2 ACC) performed at an incredibly high level in the first half, with both the offense and defense doing their parts. Jordan Travis and the Florida State offense got away with a bad missed holding call that helped the Seminoles go 5 plays for 75 yards in just 1:50 to score a touchdown. The Tigers entered halftime with a 17-14 lead, needing two more quarters of good football to complete the upset.

After Florida State tied things up with a 48-yard field goal on their first drive, Klubnik and the Tigers responded mid-way through the third quarter. The offense went 11 plays for 77 yards, with Will Shipley scoring his first rushing touchdown of the season as Clemson reclaimed the lead 24-17.

Later, Klubnik and the offense were driving and on the FSU 29-yard line before disaster struck. A blown blocking assignment led to Klubnik getting lit up, resulting in a 56-yard scoop and score for the Seminoles.

The fourth quarter started for these two ACC powerhouses tied at 24. After a scoreless quarter, it came down to Weitz and the game on the line. Unfortunately, a 29-yard field goal miss sealed this matchup heading to overtime.

After some questionable play-calling down the stretch, Florida State would later take down the Tigers in overtime, 31-24.

Florida State’s Kalen DeLoach’s devastating hit creates strip sack, score against Clemson

Florida State’s defense came up with a huge play against Clemson

Clemson appeared to be headed for a two-score lead over Florida State on Saturday.

The Seminoles called a blitz, however, and after Kalen DeLoach unloaded on Cade Klubnik, picked up the fumble and rumbled 71 yards for a touchdown.

After the strip sack and score, the Seminoles were tied 24-24 in ACC play rather than looking at a double-digit deficit heading into the fourth quarter.

This actually could have been an omen for Klubnik that something bad was about to happen.

Week 4 Preview: Florida State and Clemson to battle in ACC headliner

Can the Seminoles keep the rest of the ACC at an arms length? Their battle with the Tigers is the highlight of Week 4.

The ACC’s two heavyweights will stand on opposing sidelines this week.

No. 3 Florida State and No. 23 Clemson, the only programs in the conference that have won a national championship in the past 20 years, will meet in South Carolina this week.

With three other ranked programs in the conference waiting for the Seminoles to slip, the ACC power structure could shift rapidly over the course of a few hours in Death Valley.

Five games will feature conference matchups while four ACC teams will face off in nonconference action.

Here are the teams and matchups to keep track of in the conference this week.

Sooners knocking on the door of the top 15 in latest AP Poll

Oklahoma is now ranked No. 16 in the country after rising three spots in the latest AP Poll after their win over Tulsa.

Oklahoma is slowly building momentum as a team to watch out for. After dominating Tulsa, 66-17, the Sooners continue their ascent in the AP Poll. Oklahoma is No. 16 in the nation in the latest AP Top 25.

Oklahoma looked much better than some of their other counterparts; we saw multiple top-25 teams struggle on Saturday.

At the top, the Georgia Bulldogs remain the top team in the country after they avoided a scare from the South Carolina Gamecocks at home. Behind the Bulldogs, we have Michigan at No. 2 and Texas at No. 3, who slid up one spot. Florida State is No. 4, moving one spot down after struggling with a scrappy Boston College team on the road.

Rounding out the top five is Lincoln Riley’s USC Trojans, who were on a bye this week.

In the rest of the top 10, we have Ohio State at No. 6, followed by Penn State, Washington, Notre Dame, and Oregon at 10.

Notably absent from the top 10 is the Alabama Crimson Tide, who are 13th. They looked abysmal in a road game against the University of South Florida. The Crimson Tide pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 17-3 win, but they have big quarterback issues.

Kansas State bows out of the AP Poll after a last-second loss to Missouri. With its loss, Texas and Oklahoma are the lone Big 12 schools in the AP Top 25.

Sooners latest to offer five-star 2025 WR Caleb Cunningham

Oklahoma was the latest to offer consensus five-star wide receiver Caleb Cunningham.

Emmett Jones has had a fantastic start to his tenure as the Oklahoma Sooners wide receivers coach.

He’s picked up two transfer portal commitments, five commitments in the 2024 cycle, and so far three pledges in the 2025 cycle.

Oklahoma’s 2025 wide receiver class looks formidable already, with [autotag]Jaden Nickens[/autotag], [autotag]Elijah Thomas[/autotag], and [autotag]Gracen Harris[/autotag] in the boat.

The Sooners are pushing hard for Oklahoma legacy Isaiah Mozee, a four-star receiver out of Lee’s Summit North High School in Missouri. Mozee’s father was a running back with the Sooners under Bob Stoops.

Oklahoma isn’t satisfied just yet, as the Sooners recently offered 2025 five-star receiver Caleb Cunningham. Cunningham is the number one player in Mississippi and a consensus five-star. He’s an ultra-talented receiver with an alluring blend of size and speed that he leverages well to dominate his opponents.

He’s very much a national recruit with offers from programs all over. He’s also a standout on the basketball court, where he finished his sophomore season averaging over 20 points a game.

Oklahoma is very much in this recruiting battle because of Emmett Jones’s ability to connect with kids. It will be interesting to see how this recruitment unfurls in the coming months.

Florida State lands at No. 2 on ESPN power rankings

The Seminoles sit behind Michigan in the Coaches Poll, but the ESPN Staff thinks they’re the second-best team in the country

The ESPN Staff released their Week 3 college football power rankings earlier this week, and they disagree with the Coaches Poll on who the nation’s No. 2 team is.

The No. 3 Florida State Seminoles sit second on the staff’s list after two games.

FSU has dominated early on, notably dismantling No. 14 LSU 45-22 in Week 1 before ripping Southern Miss apart to the tune of 66-13. It’s the first time the Seminoles scored at least 45 points in both their first two games since 2016.

“The Seminoles were not perfect against Southern Miss, but you would not know it from the final score,” Andrea Adelson wrote in the team blurb, emphasizing the performances of running back Trey Benson and wide receiver Keon Coleman.

Florida State sits behind No. 2 Michigan in the Coaches Poll, but they’ve closed within 100 points of the second position. The Seminoles did leap over Ohio State and Alabama into the third spot after Week 2. They’re 5th in ESPN’s FPI rankings, with a 17.5% chance to finish with a perfect regular season.

Florida State plays Boston College on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.

Where LSU stands in ESPN’s post-Week 2 power rankings

ESPN has released their new college football power rankings after Week 2, and there has been a shakeup near the top of the rankings.

ESPN has released its new college football power rankings after Week 2, and there has been a shakeup near the top of the rankings. No. 11 Texas took down No. 3 Alabama in Tuscaloosa 34-24 and that win moved Quinn Ewers and the Longhorns up to the No. 4 spot in the rankings.

After a loss to Florida State in their season opener, LSU bounced back in a big way against Grambling as the Tigers trounced them 72-10. LSU still ranks No. 17 but will face a challenge this weekend as they play a potential ‘trap game’ on the road in Starkville, Mississippi. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.

The back-to-back national champion Georgia Bulldogs still sit at the top of the rankings with the Florida State Seminoles coming in right behind them. Michigan, Texas, USC, Penn State, Ohio State, Washington, Notre Dame and Tennessee all round out the top 10 as Alabama fell all the way to No. 11.

Oklahoma Sooners drop one spot in latest AP Poll; remain a top 20 team

Oklahoma gets leapfrogged by Colorado and Ole Miss in latest AP Poll.

Despite winning their game on Saturday, the Oklahoma Sooners dropped in the latest AP Poll that dropped on Sunday.

Oklahoma fell to No. 19 and was passed by Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes, who moved up four spots to No. 18.

Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss Rebels also passed the Sooners after they dispatched  Tulane, the only Group of Five team in the top 25.

At the top, there were a few new top-five teams. After dismantling Ball State, Georgia remains the top dog in the NCAA. Michigan is No. 2. FSU moves up to No. 3 while Oklahoma’s biggest rival, Texas, finds itself at No. 4. The Longhorns made the trip to Tuscaloosa and manhandled the Alabama Crimson Tide.

USC slides into the top five while Ohio State ranks No. 6. Penn State, Washington, Notre Dame and Alabama round out the top 10.

Big 12 foe Kansas State stays steady at No. 15, while UNC, Duke, and Miami all give the ACC nice representation at the bottom of the top 25.

At this rate, the Sooners will not take on a ranked opponent until they meet the Texas Longhorns in Dallas. That game will have major College Football Playoff and Big 12 implications if both schools stay undefeated until the Red River Rivalry.

Fox Sports’ Joel Klatt says LSU fans should feel frustrated

Joel Klatt feels LSU fans’ frustrations this week.

Entering the 2023 season, there was very real hope that LSU would take another leap forward from last year’s 10-win campaign to compete with the top teams in the country.

After a Week 1 loss to Florida State that sent the Tigers reeling, perhaps we need to reevaluate what we thought this team was going to be.

There’s certainly time for this staff to turn things around, as it did last year after opening with a loss to Florida State. Still, it was a concerning loss, and while Fox Sports’ Joel Klatt said that it’s too early to panic for the Tigers, the performance in the opener was a cause for frustration.

“I don’t quite think it’s time to panic for LSU. But, boy, it’s time to be frustrated,” Klatt said on his show this week, per On3. “How should LSU feel? Frustrated.

“They made mistakes on the field last year that can be explained away because you had a new coach and kind of a new team with some transfers in there. It’s like, ‘It’s okay, we played better by the end. We won the SEC (West)’. And there was this sentiment that it was like, ‘Well, that’s going to change’. And, ‘We won’t make those same mistakes early in this season.’ Guess what? It happened again.”

Klatt said that he didn’t think LSU was particularly overmatched in this game, but the execution in the second half left a lot to be desired.

“Do I think Florida State is that much better than LSU? Probably not. The score got away from them a little bit,” Klatt said. “Why? Because they didn’t execute and made massive mistakes, in particular in that first half.

“They probably could have had a lead by a score or two at times during that game. Their quarterback has got to play better. Their execution has got to get better, their special teams has got to get cleaned up. I would be frustrated.”

The bottom line for Klatt is that the loss decreases the margin for error down the stretch in SEC play.

“Why would I be frustrated? Because this is still a team that’s going to compete in the SEC,” Klatt said. “What I wouldn’t want, if I was a Tiger fan, is to have the same type of year that we had a year ago. Win a special game against Alabama on the road in Tuscaloosa, get to the SEC Championship, and not really be in the playoff picture. Why? Because of some silly game at the beginning of the year where we didn’t play our best.”

LSU will hope for a similar bounce-back from last year’s loss.
