2024 NFL Draft: Could Raiders be looking quarterback on Day 2?

Could Raiders be looking quarterback on Day 2?

Sitting at pick 13, the Raiders were in a precarious position considering their need at quarterback. There were six quarterbacks who were considering worthy of a first round pick and all six of them were gone by the 12th pick.

When looking at scenarios pre-draft, this always seemed like a distinct possibility considering the needs of the teams ahead of them. It was the Falcons taking Michael Penix that seemed to shake things up, but there’s no guarantee that had they passed on Penix that another team wouldn’t have taken him or even jumped up ahead of the Raiders to take him.

The result was the Raiders were the only QB-needy team left without a chair when the music stopped, prompting them to take the best player available in tight end Brock Bowers.

This isn’t to say there is literally no decent quarterback talent left in this draft. Just none that were deemed worthy of a first round pick. Or, in some views, not even worthy of a second round pick.

It would not be good if the Raiders get through this draft without adding some young competition to the quarterback room to go with former fourth round pick Aidan O’Connell and journeyman free agent acquisition Gardner Minshew.

The question is when they decide to pull the trigger on getting that quarterback.

The next highest rated quarterback in this draft is South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler, who draft analyst Dane Brugler gives a third round grade and the consensus big board has as the 93rd overall prospect, which is late third round.

Brugler describes Rattler as an “Aesthetically pleasing passer with his fluid release and impressive arm talent” but points to the interview process as the key to how teams will view him.

If the Raiders go strictly on value on the board, they might wait to consider taking Rattler until their pick at 77 overall in the third round. But with this being the quarterback position, would they ignore his place on draft boards — that is to say if they even agree with these boards — and take him at 44? We are talking about quarterback, after all. Which if what happened at the top of the draft is any indication, it should be (and is) treated differently than other positions.

Keep in mind, there were reports the Giants, Saints, and Seahawks were among teams looking at adding a quarterback in this draft as well, so the Raiders could have some competition.

Let’s say the Raiders go with board value (again) and pass on Rattler at 44. And let’s say another team takes him before they’re up at 77. What then?

Well, after Rattler, there appears to be another dropoff at quarterback. With only Tulane’s Michael Pratt rated as a borderline Day two pick. Brugler has him as a Round 3-4 talent and the consensus big board has him at 127 (4th round). The Raiders next pick after 77 is 112 in the 4th round.

The next tier consists of Kentucky’s Devin Leary, Tennessee’s Joe Milton III, and Florida State’s Jordan Travis — all of whom are considered at best Round five prospects. But, again, who could possibly go at least a round higher based on the fact that they play the most premium position in football.

For those counting along at home, that’s just five quarterbacks left in this draft deemed worthy of a pick ahead of the sixth round. So, yeah, not much depth left, which isn’t all that surprising considering the crowd at the top of the draft.

If you’re the Raiders, it would somewhere between unwise and downright irresponsible not to take a quarterback in this draft. And it could be very risky to wait until Day three to consider taking one. We’ll see how the draft plays out and see if we have to revisit this conversation tomorrow.

Cardinals projected to take quarterback in 7th round

ESPN’s Jordan Reid projects the Cardinals will take Florida State QB Jordan Travis with their final pick in the draft.

The Arizona Cardinals’ quarterback situation looks settled. They have their unquestioned starter and franchise guy in Kyler Murray. They traded for Desmond Ridder, who with 17 career NFL starts with a record of 8-9, who should be their backup. They have second-year pro Clayton Tune as their developmental guy, a player the coaching staff seems to like.

Should they pull the trigger on a quarterback this year in the draft?

ESPN’s Jordan Reid projects they will in the seventh round, selecting Florida State’s Jordan Travis.

With 11 picks in this year’s draft, the Cardinals could make big steps forward in their rebuilding stages at the draft. General manager Monti Ossenfort has already set a foundation around quarterback Kyler Murray, who returned to form last season after a torn ACL in 2022. He is still the unquestioned starter, but that doesn’t mean the Cardinals shouldn’t continue to address every position on the roster — even QB.

Travis is coming off his own injury, as his 2023 season came to an end after suffering a broken leg in November. He expects to be ready for camp, though, and when healthy, Travis is a true playmaker. With 20 TD passes and two interceptions in 2023, Travis can make plays happen inside and outside the pocket, really excelling when forced to make plays off-platform. But he has an average arm and can rely on that ability outside of structure too often.

There is 100% no reason to draft a quarterback unless they are 100% sold that Tune is not worth a roster spot or even a practice squad spot. I was on the record as saying I thought drafting Tune was a waste.

Seventh-round picks are always a toss-up at best for being a player who can contribute, but wouldn’t it be better to find an athletic special teams player rather than letting Tune, who was a solid Day 3 type prospect in terms of potential because of his size, experience, ability and athleticism.

Unless the coaches don’t think Tune has anything to offer better than he gave them last year, just ignore the quarterback position in the draft completely.

2024 NFL Draft: Florida State QB Jordan Travis scouting report

If Florida State QB Jordan Travis had stayed healthy through his 2023 season, the 2024 NFL draft quarterback conversation would be a bit different.

Jordan Travis spent his first collegiate season at Louisville in the post-Lamar Jackson landscape, but he completed just four of 14 passes in 2018 for 71 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and a passer rating of 42.3. A transfer to Florida State allowed him to be far more prolific. Over five seasons with the Seminoles, Travis developed as a quarterback and as an athlete, and his school records prove the point.

Travis holds holds FSU career records for touchdown responsibility, total offense, quarterback rushing yards and quarterback rushing touchdowns. He is the only player in FSU history with more than 50 passing touchdowns and at least 12 rushing touchdowns, the only player in program history with three different streaks of at least 120 passes without an interception, the only player ranked Top 10 on FSU’s career passing touchdowns and rushing touchdowns lists, and he accounted for school-record 97 total touchdowns and 10,554 yards of total offense.

Last season, Travis completed 207 of 325 passes for 2,755 yards, 20 touchdowns, two interceptions, and a passer rating of 108.4. He also rushed 46 times for 279 yards and seven touchdowns.

Had he not suffered a leg fracture against North Alabama on November 18, Travis might be heading into this draft class with a different conversation regarding the top players at his position. NFL teams will have to weigh the injury against Travis’ productivity and potential, and I think he’ll come out on the right side of that equation.

PLUSES

— Compact, consistent delivery which allows him to get the ball out quickly once he sees it downfield.

— Has the pace and touch to succeed as a downfield thrower, and though anticipation is not really his game, Travis has a knack for getting the ball deep where his guy can get it.

— Height (6′ 1⅛”) isn’t an issue; Travis completed 134 of 198 passes over the middle and left/right middle last season for 1,785 yards, 617 air yards, 10 touchdowns, two interceptions, and a passer rating of 112.6.

— Forced 23 missed tackles and scored seven touchdowns in 46 rushing attempts last season; has some definite potential at the next level.

— Has no issue throwing to either side on the move, which will help him force open lanes outside the pocket.

MINUSES

— Needs to see his target come open before he’ll turn it loose. Can be vulnerable to opportunistic defenders as a result, and this will increase in the NFL.

— Has periods of inaccuracy when he gets cute with his upper body.

— Gets a bit wild and unstructured as a scrambler at times when he should just take a profit and move on.

I’m of the belief that if Travis hadn’t suffered a brutal leg fracture in mid-November, and if he had played through the 2023 season as he did pre-injury, the 2024 quarterback conversation would be a bit different. Not that he’s ready to compete with Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels, but in that second QB tier, he had enough going for him to climb into the boat.

Jets schedule pre-draft visit with Florida State QB Jordan Travis

The Jets will at least do their due diligence on Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis.

The Jets have their top two quarterbacks set for the 2024 season with Aaron Rodgers and Tyrod Taylor. But drafting a developmental quarterback on day three may not be out of the question. According to a recent report, the Jets will be doing their due diligence on a potential Heisman Trophy candidate before his injury.

Per Logan Robinson of SI FanNation’s NoleGameday, the Jets have scheduled a pre-draft visit with Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis in the coming weeks.

Travis was a candidate for the Heisman Trophy with 2,756 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and just two interceptions in 11 games for the undefeated Seminoles before his season-ending leg injury. He still finished 5th in voting for the award.

Travis should be good to go for the season and the possibility of the Jets taking Travis on the third day of the draft should at least be considered. The Jets could bring him along as he recovers from the leg injury and there would be no pressure to rush him back with Rodgers and Taylor in the mix. It will be interesting to see, in general, if the Jets choose to draft a quarterback late, but if they do, Travis would be a very intriguing prospect.

2024 Scouting Combine: Five quarterbacks detail their favorite college plays

The 2024 scouting combine was the place to ask five quarterback prospects for the best plays of their collegiate careers.

INDIANAPOLIS — Unless you are somehow able to gain access to one of the rooms in which NFL teams meet with draft prospects during the week of the scouting combine, there’s no way to know what’s really discussed. One thing that is almost always happens is a tape-watching expedition in which the NFL people will have play examples dialed up that hopefully show what the prospects can do.

Here at Touchdown Wire, we do not possess the required juice to crash those rooms, but we are able to ask these prospects during their combine media sessions which plays from their college careers best typify their potential.

We’ve already done this with six tight ends and seven cornerbacks here at the combine, and now, it’s time to get into the favorite plays of five quarterback prospects — Oregon’s Bo Nix, Kentucky’s Devin Leary, Florida State’s Jordan Travis, South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler, and Tulane’s Michael Pratt.

2024 NFL draft: FSU QB Jordan Travis would love to play with Steelers WR George Pickens

Jordan Travis could be a mid-round sleeper pick for the Steelers.

There was a point during the 2023 college football season when Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis was being discussed as a Heisman Trophy candidate and one of the best quarterbacks in the country. Unfortunately, an injury cut his season short and now he is working his way back to full strength ahead of the 2024 NFL draft.

Travis spoke at the NFL Scouting Combine and when asked if there were any players in the NFL he’d love to play with aside from former teammates, he quickly said Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens.

Travis’ primary selling point is high athleticism. Travis can do things on the move that few players can and is a threat to break the pocket and run on any play. His passing mechanics need work and like most college quarterbacks, isn’t asked to go through progressions or anticipate throws. But he’s a smart player, a hard worker and definitely worth a pick as a developmental prospect for a team with an entrenched starter. Do the Steelers fit the bill?

Vikings 2024 NFL draft scouting report: Florida State QB Jordan Travis

Florida State QB Jordan Travis had a great season before breaking his ankle in November. How much did that impact his NFL Draft stock?

Welcome to SKOL Search!

This series will be your guide to the 2024 draft class. From scouting reports to mock drafts and exploring different scenarios, we will be covering the NFL draft and the future of the Minnesota Vikings from all angles.

The focus of the draft class in this space will be on the Vikings’ major needs at quarterback, running back, defensive line and edge rusher. We will also focus on wide receiver since it’s a loaded class and an increased chance to get a Stefon Diggs-type steal in the later rounds.

The Vikings are slated to have 9 picks going into the NFL draft and they need to make the most out of them.

3 QBs the Steelers should consider in the 2024 NFL draft

Pittsburgh could add a mid-round sleeper quarterback in this year’s draft.

As of now, we have no idea what the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback room will look like at the start of the 2024 season. Kenny Pickett is returning and we presume will be the starter heading into training camp, Mason Rudolph is a free agent and Mitch Trubisky should be cut loose to save salary cap.

If the Steelers do opt to draft a quarterback, it’s highly unlikely they draft one early but here are three later-round guys we love the potential of.

2024 NFL draft: New Seahawks 7-round mock draft

This new Seahawks mock draft lands them an elite edge rusher and a potential franchise quarterback.

The Seattle Seahawks will head into the 2024 offseason with a new head coach after longtime coach Pete Carroll and the team parted ways. This one took us by surprise and while we aren’t sure who will be the new head coach, this updated seven-round mock draft hits all the big needs for the Seahawks including loading up along the line of scrimmage and landing a future franchise quarterback.

Florida State’s college football playoff snub from is enough to make you question the CFP’s purpose

FSU deserved so much better from the CFP committee.

Good morning, Winners! I hope you all have had a fantastic weekend. Well, uh, FSU fans, I know you probably didn’t. But I hope there was … something redeemable about your weekend outside of FSU’s snub!

What happened to Florida State over the weekend does feel like a travesty the more I think about it.

FSU did everything right. It won out with its schedule. It went out of its way to schedule a tough non-conference opponent on a neutral field to start off its season. None of that mattered. It ultimately came down to the fact that its quarterback broke his leg.

That’s why this is so frustrating. Perfection is an impossible standard to hold someone to. Team record, style points, health. Everything has to go right.

But it’s football. Nothing ever goes right. Somebody is going to get hurt. Things are going to go bad. It’s what teams do with the unfortunate circumstances they get handed that ultimately make them champions. FSU’s fate was decided by a room of 13 people before it ever got a chance to prove itself. Something about that feels wholly unfair to me.

College football has always been about pageantry when it comes to the postseason — even in the BCS era. It’s about who you beat and when you beat them. It’s also about how well you beat them. College football gave up one imprecise system for another. And it’ll do it again next season when eight more teams are added to the playoff action. Then all this hemming and hawing over FSU wouldn’t be necessary.

But I just want to ask the question: Do we really need all of this? Does this really capture the essence of college football?

For centuries college football was about so much more than playoff implications and postseason play. The only thing people cared about the rivalry between their alma mater and that other off-brand school down the highway.

We didn’t fall in love with this sport by calculating strength of schedule week after week. It was Michigan vs. Ohio State that brought us there. It was Auburn vs. Alabama. Texas vs. Oklahoma. That’s why we love college football.

Conference realignment is going to rob us of that. As more time goes by, those rivalries will begin to fade into the background. And, more and more, all people will talk about — and all teams will schedule for — will be the playoff. Playoff this. Playoff that.

But that’s not my college football. In my college football, FSU has already proven itself worthy enough to be called a champion.

I don’t need playoff games to see that.

What standin’ on binness looks like

Mandatory Credit: Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

Deebo Samuel and the 49ers have been trash-talking the Eagles for almost a calendar year since the 49ers lost the NFC Championship Game.

San Francisco came out and walked the walk on Sunday with a 42-19 drubbing over the Eagles in Philadelphia. Sheesh. Robert Zeglinski has more in his weekly awards column.

“Even with all of Nick Sirianni’s brash motivational tactics to get his team ready, the 49ers took a needle to the Eagles’ balloon and popped it without mercy. Seriously, after a first quarter where it looked like both squads were feeling each other out, San Francisco flat-out opened the salvos and left Philadelphia’s beloved “birds” in tatters. From right around halfway through the second quarter, the 49ers scored a touchdown on six consecutive possessions. They outgained the Eagles by over 100 yards, gained over eight yards an offensive play, and were effectively perfect on third down.

The Eagles had their [expletive] handed to them. A security guard getting into it with linebacker Dre Greenlaw was probably the most fight anyone associated with Philadelphia showed all day. I legitimately can’t remember a ruthless road whooping of a Super Bowl contender like this.”

We need round three of this, man. This is the sort of rivalry that makes the game so much fun. Please, football gods. Let us have it.

Brock Purdy isn’t Kyle Shanahan’s MVP

(AP Photo/Chris Szagola)

It’s a cold world we live in, folks. Brock Purdy woke up this morning to find himself tied atop the NFL in MVP odds alongside Jalen Hurts and Dak Prescott, our Prince Grimes writes.

But his own coach is raining on his parade! On Friday, Kyle Shanahan made the case for one of Purdy’s teammates over him — it’s Christian McCaffery.

“Yeah, I think without a doubt,” Shanahan told reporters Friday. “I know it goes to quarterbacks the majority of the time, and there’s plenty of worthy quarterbacks, but you definitely can’t say that Christian’s behind anyone. He’s as valuable in this league as anyone.”

Someone needs to check back in with Kyle after Sunday’s performance. But, as Prince points out, he’s making a pretty good point here. McCaffery has been the 49ers best player all season long and he also had an incredible game against the Eagles.

But, then again, who didn’t on Sunday? Sheesh.

Quick hits: Ah, yes, more officiating complaints … Ime Udoka vs. LeBron … and more

— Fans were livid at these WILD decisions from officials at the end of Packers-Chiefs on Sunday night. It completely changed the game. Mary Clarke has more.

— Charles Curtis has more on the beef between LeBron James and Ime Udoka. We finally know what they said and, uh, well, you need to hear it.

— Here’s Christian D’Andrea with the best and worst of Week 13 in the NFL including MVP love for Tyreek Hill, who probably deserves it.

Mike Greenberg is upset over FSU, too. He just like me fr. Meghan Hall has more.

— Taylor Swift riding the emotional roller coaster of a Chiefs game is so relatable. Caroline Darny has more.
