Should you be rucking?

You can trust the fitness community to always find new ways to get active. One of the latest workouts they’ve been getting excited about? It’s called rucking. Here’s the lowdown on what rucking is and why people love it.

The whole craze started as a military training exercise called ruck marching. In fact, as Melanie Radzicki McManus wrote for CNN, “One of the tests the US Army gives recruits looking to earn an Expert Infantryman Badge is a 12-mile ruck, or foot march, which they must complete within three hours while carrying at least 35 pounds of gear.”

Sounds pretty intense. But is this strict military testing version of rucking what has gym buffs so excited? Not exactly.

What is rucking?

Let’s define rucking as a fitness trend. As GORUCK, a company that hosts rucking events and sells rucking equipment, explains on its website, “Rucking is the action of walking with weight on your back.” Ruckers strap on a weighted rucking backpack (aka rucksack) and simply start walking.

There are a few reasons why this military training exercise has gained mainstream appeal. As writers for both GQ and Outside have discussed, rucking got a major boost after being mentioned in author Michael Easter’s 2021 book “The Comfort Crisis.” Since then, rucking has taken off on social media likely due in part to its accessibility. After all, you don’t need much to begin rucking. In theory, if you have a backpack and something heavy to put inside of it, you’re ready to go. Rucking is also low-impact, so it doesn’t stress your joints as much as activities like running do.

So, what benefits does rucking have as a workout? According to Healthline, people who ruck regularly can expect to improve their “strength, endurance, and general fitness.” The added weight a person carries while rucking also helps them burn more calories than they would by walking without the weight.

Further, rucking can offer meaningful benefits to older people. A 2019 study published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine found that weighted exercises helped older women “significantly improve lower limb muscle power and functional ability.” As a weighted cardiovascular exercise, rucking may be a useful tool for retaining muscle strength as you age.

How do you recover from golf travel? Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy and a PGA Tour therapist have tips

To win at Royal Liverpool, golfers need to have their bodies primed for competition, and that starts with recovery.

Driving from Los Angeles Country Club in California to TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, covers 3,055 miles and would, according to Google Maps, take you about 58 hours to complete by car.

Needless to say, after Rory McIlroy lost the U.S. Open by one shot to Wyndham Clark, emptied his locker and packed his bags on Sunday, he was not hitting the road and driving to the following week’s Travelers Championship. McIlroy stayed in Los Angeles that night, had a few glasses of red wine with dinner and headed to bed before flying east on Monday morning. However, the four-time major winner went home to Florida instead of Connecticut to see his family, get some rest and recover.

“I try to get into the time zone where I’m going as quickly as possible,” McIlroy said Wednesday evening at TPC River Highlands. “I didn’t do a good job of that on Monday night because I started watching TV, and all of a sudden it was midnight [in Florida] and it was 9 p.m. back there and I didn’t feel tired.”

Many of the game’s best players have descended upon Royal Liverpool Golf Club after flying across Asia, Africa, and Europe. They have come from Australia, South America and North America too, and must recover quickly to be at their best on Thursday and contend for the Claret Jug.

Broncos QB Russell Wilson posts unique workout video on social media

Denver Broncos fans can criticize quarterback Russell Wilson for his play on the field last season, but no one can question Wilson’s work ethic.

The 34-year-old veteran has an intense workout routine and he shared a glimpse of one of his unique workouts on social media over the weekend.

Wilson posted a video showing several drills and stretches, including multiple where he is holding a football:

While the quarterback still receives criticism on social media, there are Broncos fans backing him ahead of the 2023 season.

“Can’t wait for the broncos to bounce back this year and that dude is about to go off 💯,” one fan commented on Instagram.

“Looks like you’ve turned back the sands of time a few years Russ. Thank you for all the hard work. Looking forward to the product the @Broncos put on the field this year,” another fan wrote on Twitter.

Now playing for new coach Sean Payton, Wilson will hope to have a bounce-back season in his second year with the Broncos.
