The beginnings of games were not a problem for the Cleveland Browns last season as they ranked fifth in fourth-quarter leads in 2022 according to Warren Sharp. After the first quarter last year, the Browns were plus-29 in overall point differential with both offense and defense playing their best out of the gates to begin most matchups.

The bulk of their struggles could be linked to adjuments, or a lack thereof on the Browns’ side, which often made for some head-scratching situations. Coaching changes, specifically those on the defensive side of the ball, will help the team turn things around in 2023 if the Browns are to be the contenders that some think they could be.

We have already heard from players about the difference in the culture and their excitement to play for new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. He has the pedigree and history to suggest he has the ability to make necessary changes to solve issues as they occur. Pair that with a full season of Deshaun Watson under center, the team should be well-positioned to take a major step forward in 2023.

Packers 2021 first quarter awards: MVP, most improved, top rookie and more

Handing out awards for the Green Bay Packers after the first four games of the 2021 season.

The Green Bay Packers are 3-1 after the first four games of the 2021 season. The addition of a 17th game in the NFL no longer allows us to cut the NFL season into four equal quarters, but that reality isn’t going to stop Packers Wire from handing out some ol’ fashion quarter-mark awards.

We’ll be talking about the most valuable player, the best on offense and defense, the top rookies, the most improved and the top newcomer.

Here’s an award-based breakdown of the team after four games from the staff at Packers Wire:

Gators locked with Georgia after wild first quarter

Florida and Georgia are tied after one quarter and both teams have shown some weaknesses and strengths.

It wasn’t an ideal start for the Gators.

They allowed a 75-yard touchdown to Georgia running back Zamir White on the first play from scrimmage, and after going three and out on their first possession of the game, they allowed another Bulldogs scoring drive.

Trailing 14-0 not even four minutes into the game, things were looking bleak for Florida. But its offense answered with a seven-play, 75-yard drive completed with a touchdown pass to Justin Shorter.

The UF defense settled in and managed to string together back-to-back three-and-outs. Trask led another touchdown drive culminating in a rushing touchdown from Dameon Pierce, who briefly left with an injury.

Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett exited the game after apparently injuring his throwing arm and went to the locker room. He was spelled by D’Wan Mathis, who he replaced during Georgia’s season opener.

Bennett is back on the field and it appears that he will try to return at some point in this game. He is 2-of-4 passing on the game with 45 yards and a touchdown. Mathis has completed his only attempt, which went for five yards as UF was tied with the Bulldogs at 14 at the end of the first.

How to watch Florida Gators vs Georgia Bulldogs football this Saturday

WATCH: Gators score on first two drives against South Carolina

The redshirt senior quarterback has found the junior tight end 3 times already for 58 yards and a touchdown at the end of the 1st quarter.

The Kyle Trask to Kyle Pitts connection is already dialed in.

The redshirt senior quarterback has found the junior tight end — his favorite target — three times already for 58 yards and a touchdown at the end of the first quarter.

The Gamecocks’ offense has given Florida’s defense, which gave up over 600 yards to Ole Miss last week, some early troubles, but Trask is 7 of 7 for 109 yards and a touchdown and has led UF to touchdowns on its two opening drives.

On the first, junior running back Dameon Pierce found paydirt. He had a solid first quarter, carrying the ball five times for 27 yards and a score.

So far, Florida’s offense is executing as expected. The defense has settled down after giving up a quick touchdown on the game’s first drive, earning back-to-back stops.

If Florida’s offense continues to move the ball with this level of ease, it’s going to put a lot of pressure on South Carolina to keep up, which it struggled to do in the first quarter.

Both offenses have been off to a hot start, with Texas leading Texas Tech 17-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Sam Ehlinger led his team on a 13 play, 75-yard touchdown drive to open the game. The senior quarterback punched the ball in from the five-yard line to cap off the drive.

Texas Tech answered immediately, going 75 yards in just six plays. Slot wide receiver KeSean Carter continued his great 2020 season with a 13-yard touchdown from Alan Bowman.

Texas’ second touchdown of the game came from Joshua Moore, his second of the season. Although the pass was thrown into double coverage, Moore made an incredible catch to put the Longhorn up by 10.

The Longhorns’ rushing attack is off to a great start, already having 75 yards on 17 carries. Keaontay Ingram and Roschon Johnson have gotten a majority of the touches so far with Bijan Robinson getting two carries.

Cameron Dicker began his Big 12 play with a 43-yard field goal to put Texas ahead. After missing a kick against UTEP, Dicker will be looking to stay consistent this season.

First-quarter stats

Sam Ehlinger: Eight of nine, 70 yards. Six carries for 30 yards and two touchdowns.

Keaontay Ingram: Five carries for 19 yards

Brennan Eagles: Two receptions for 19 yards

Alan Bowman: Six of eight, 75 yards and one touchdown

Chris Carson scores 2 touchdowns in 1st quarter of Seahawks opener

Seattle Seahawks running back Chris Carson scores two touchdowns in the first quarter of the season opener against the Atlanta Falcons.

The Seattle Seahawks are in Atlanta to take on the Falcons on the road for their Week 1, regular-season opener.  Midway through the second quarter, the Seahawks have a 14-9 lead, courtesy of running back Chris Carson, who scored two touchdowns for Seattle in just the first quarter of play.

The first score came on a three-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Russell Wilson to cap off a 77-yard TD drive that ate 6:23 off the clock and put Seattle ahead 7-3.

The second score was much quicker, a three-play drive for 60 yards that culminated in a 19-yard pass to Carson and the touchdown.

In the middle of the second quarter, Carson is now a perfect 4-4 receiving for 37 yards and the two touchdowns.

Here’s a look at both of his scoring plays:

Texas Longhorns vs UTEP Miners: First quarter recap

UT’s 2020 season is underway and could not be off to a better start. Texas has an early 21-0 lead over UTEP after the first quarter.

Texas’ 2020 season is fully underway and could not be off to a better start.

All offseason, offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich said he was going to bring speed. Well, one play into the game, Sam Ehlinger found Joshua Moore for a 78-yard touchdown. It was the longest passing touchdown for Texas since 2016.

Running backs Roschon Johnson got the start, the first of his career. He finished the opening period with 13 rushing yards and a touchdown. Keaontay Ingram also made an early impact, getting time in the second and fourth series. The presumed starter already has 14 yards.

Defensively, UTEP has been able to do nothing. The Miners struggled early last week against Stephen F. Austin and are doing so early again on Saturday. Through four amount of drives, UTEP has punted four amount of times.

It is early but Texas has already shown signs of a blowout, leading 21-0. Minus a missed Cameron Dicker field goal, the Longhorns have been playing flawless football.

First-quarter stats

Sam Ehlinger: 10 of 14, 193 passing yards, two touchdowns

Cade Brewer: Three receptions, 40 yards, one touchdown

UTEP offense: 35 total yards

Super Bowl LIV Prop Betting: First quarter moneyline

Should you make a moneyline bet on the San Francisco 49ers or Kansas City Chiefs to hold a lead after the first quarter of Super Bowl LIV?

[jwplayer 2XgmjwzG]

Two of the NFL’s best offenses will square off Sunday in Super Bowl LIV at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The San Francisco 49ers ranked second in points scored this season, while the Kansas City Chiefs were fifth. Below, we’ll look at which team can get off to the better start in Super Bowl LIV with our best bet for the first-quarter moneyline.

Super Bowl LIV First quarter moneyline odds

We all know how good these offenses are, but which team will come out of the gates hotter? According to BetMGM, the first quarter moneyline is -110 for both teams. In other words, the oddsmakers don’t favor either the Chiefs or 49ers to hold the lead after the first 15 minutes.

If you’re going to bet on the first quarter moneyline, though, which team should you take?

The Chiefs enter Super Bowl LIV as 1.5-point favorites against the spread, but as we saw in their first two playoff games, they’ve had to come from behind to earn their victories. Against the Houston Texans, they were down 24-0 early in the second quarter before mounting a huge comeback to win 51-31. The Tennessee Titans held a 10-point lead the following week, but Kansas City erased that deficit, too.

The 49ers, on the other hand, haven’t trailed once in these playoffs and were only tied once (after the opening score). They were tied 7-7 after one quarter against the Minnesota Vikings in the Divisional Round, and they led 7-0 after 15 minutes against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship.

Our best bet: 49ers (-110)

(Photo Credit: Kirby Lee – USA TODAY Sports)

So, based on recent history, the 49ers would look like the wiser bet for the first quarter moneyline. They’ve been more in control than the Chiefs this postseason and there were only four games this season in which they trailed after the first quarter. The Chiefs trailed after the first quarter seven times.

Only three teams were better than the 49ers in the first quarter this season. Their scoring margin in the first 15 minutes was plus-40, scoring 106 points to their opponents’ 66. The Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers were the only teams better in that department.

The Chiefs, on the other hand, were 12th in first-quarter scoring margin (plus-10). They scored 90 first-quarter points but allowed 80 to their opponents, which was 11th-worst in the NFL.

So if you’re going to wager on the first quarter money line, the 49ers look like a solid bet. They may not put up a ton of points with their ground-and-pound attack, but it’ll take the Chiefs some time to get in a rhythm offensively.
