John Mulaney overexplaining the Field of Dreams plot while at the Oscars was a perfect bit

John Mulaney was right: The plot of ‘Field of Dreams’ is truly wild.

During the 2024 Oscars, comedian John Mulaney presented the Academy Award for Best Sound.

While this easily could have become a monotonous moment in the broadcast if left in the hands of another presenter, Mulaney turned this one of the most memorable segments from the show.

The comedian began by talking about sound design as a concept before eventually detouring to a non-sequitur about the 1989 film Field of Dreams. It was a masterful summary of a beloved baseball movie that, in retrospect, has a plot that makes no sense at all.

Here is just a sampling of Mulaney had to say:

“Or what about the moment in Field of Dreams when we hear: ‘If you build it, he will come.’ And then Costner does it. He builds a baseball field. Or I guess he doesn’t build it. He mows down corn and then there is a field and then he’s like: ‘I’m going to watch ghosts play baseball.’ And the bank is like: ‘You want to play your mortgage?’ And he’s like: ‘Nah, I’m going to watch ghosts play baseball.’ And then he finds James-Earl Jones, who wrote The Boatrocker, which I thought was a real book deep into my 20s.”

Mulaney continued providing even more details about the film (and his suspected rules about “ghost baseball”) and it was so perfectly silly.

It was also yet another reason why Mulaney is considered a favorite to eventually replace Jimmy Kimmel as the host at the Oscars in the future.

Peter King compares Commanders’ fans returning to camp to ‘Field of Dreams’

After 24 long years, Washington fans are excited again.

It’s been a celebratory two weeks for fans of the Washington Commanders. When Josh Harris replaced Dan Snyder as owner of the Commanders two weeks ago, there were parties and celebrations. Harris even called into one of those celebrations to buy everyone in attendance a beer.

When the Commanders opened training camp last week, some wondered if the same passion would follow. It was clear from the first two open practices of training camp that fans were on board with the new regime. Fans packed the new bleachers, and Washington superfan Kevin Durant even made an appearance.

Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post showed a side-by-side picture from precisely one year before at the exact location.

Things really turned up on Saturday for the NFL’s “Back Together Saturday,” as 10,000 fans made it to Ashburn. The players were pumped. Head coach Ron Rivera was thrilled.

Legendary NFL writer Peter King of NBC Sports likened fans returning to training camp post-Snyder to the classic movie, “Field of Dreams” in his latest Football Morning in America column.

I think watching the fans streaming into Washington training camp is reminiscent of the final moments in “Field of Dreams,” with the cars lined up in Dyersville, Iowa to recapture what they loved so much and what they thought was lost forever. Good luck to the Josh Harris group in making the team what I remember from the late eighties and early nineties. Games at RFK Stadium were almost religious revivals. The ground shook and the press box swayed with the game on the line in the fourth quarter of so many of those games. May it happen again.

King covered a lot of games during Washington’s glory years from RFK Stadium. Recapturing that past glory seems much more attainable in the post-Snyder era.

The Commanders are back on the practice field Tuesday, and it is open to fans.

A Harry Caray hologram sang the 7th inning stretch at the Field of Dreams Game and baseball fans were creeped out

Ah one, Ah two, Ah OH NO!

Few experiences epitomize how beautiful the sport of baseball can be than the Field of Dreams game. There’s supposed to be something magical about this makeshift game played in the Iowa corn. Unfortunately, it seems Major League Baseball wanted to ruin that with overindulgence in creepy technology.

Earlier this week, word leaked that the late Harry Caray — a long-time broadcaster most famous for his work with the Cubs — would appear at the game in hologram form. (Note: Caray was known for embellishing the seventh-inning stretch, especially in Chicago.) Given that Caray has been dead for decades, it sounded like a bad idea on Wednesday. It also sounded like a bad idea given the less colorful aspects of Caray’s history, like that he was often rumored to be drinking alcohol in the booth or his infamous racist comments on air about former Asian MLB pitcher Hideo Nomo.

It still sounded like a bad idea on Thursday, before the proceedings. So, as everyone thought, of course it didn’t go well:

Oh dear God, what is that on screen? Terrifying! Who in the MLB offices greenlit this idea? Is it because Caray was a “throwback”? Well, he wasn’t a throwback for the best reasons! This plan for the Fields of Dreams game was better left in the drafts.

Anyway, apropos of nothing, I’m definitely not sleeping tonight.

The MLB returned to Dyersville’s iconic cornfields for the Field of Dreams Game and it was gorgeous.

Major League Baseball’s Field of Dreams Games continue to pile on the nostalgia and gorgeous views.

After the 2021 bout between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees successfully debuted the event, the MLB brought it back for yet another go around in 2022. Nestled in the iconic Dyersville, Iowa cornfields, this year’s Field of Dreams game between the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds was a feast for the eyes.

From the clean uniforms both teams were wearing during the game to the incredible scenes that were on display all evening, baseball fans were treated to quite the spectacle. Here are the 18 best, most majestic photos from Thursday night’s Field of Dreams Game.

Ken Griffey Jr. and his dad played catch at the Field of Dreams Game and baseball fans were emotional

What a special moment between Ken Griffey Jr. and Ken Griffey Sr. at the Field of Dreams Game.

The 2022 Field of Dreams Game began with quite the emotional scene for baseball fans.

As Thursday’s game got underway in Dyersville, Iowa, emotions were already peaking as fans settled into their seats for a bout between the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds. Joey Votto himself already talked at length about what the movie and the game means to him after losing his father more than 14 years ago.

And who were the first people to emerge from the cornfields on Thursday? None other than Ken Griffey Jr. and Ken Griffey Sr., one of the most iconic father-son baseball duos in history. Not only that, the two played a wonderful game of catch much like the iconic Field of Dreams scene that inspired this entire event before the rest of the players took the field.

The drop from Griffey Sr. notwithstanding, what an opening! Baseball fans were, as expected, were quite emotional after this heartwarming father and son moment.

Rafael Ortega and Kyle Farmer will wear some slick, cornfield cleats for the Field of Dreams Game

Nothing hits quite like some customized shoes.

Major League Baseball has a treat for its fans on Thursday evening when the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs hit the national television broadcasts.

The two NL Central squads will take the diamond in Iowa in the MLB’s annual Field of Dreams Game.

It’s a slick event. The field is cool, the coverage and presentation is unique and unlike any other MLB game throughout the year, and of course, it takes viewers back to the 1989 film Field of Dreams.

But one of the cooler things is how the players’ creative juices get flowing for this particular game. Today, you’ll see some of the best cleats you’ve seen on a baseball field all year.

Check out these customized Nike cleats that’ll be worn by Cubs outfielder Rafael Ortega and Reds shortstop Kyle Farmer.

Both are fire! I’m more of a low-top guy, myself, so I’m rolling with Farmer’s cleats.

And you know how the saying goes: look good, feel good, play good. Should we expect some stellar play on Thursday night to back look?

7 best bets on the Field of Dreams Game between the Cubs and Reds (fade the NRFI)

Two bad teams, one grand stage and plenty of opportunities to cash some bets.

Baseball is back in Iowa.

The 2022 MLB Field of Dreams Game—easily one of the coolest things the league has done in decades—is ready to play ball in the middle of the cornfields once again. After an epic inaugural event between the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees ended with Tim Anderson’s storybook walk-off homer, the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds will try to provide the elusive Hollywood sequel that proves better than the original.

It won’t be easy. The Cubs (-1.5) and Reds (-115 ML) are each 20 games under .500. The name recognition among players on either side is relatively minimal compared to last year’s game.

Still, the spectacle of it all will be hard to turn away from. And if we’re going to watch this game, we’re certainly going to bet on it.

Here are seven of the wagers we feel most confident on. Best of luck tailing.

Joey Votto’s heartfelt thread on why the ‘Field of Dreams’ game means so much to him will have you in your feels

Joey Votto’s touching story will make you want to watch him in the ‘Field of Dreams’ game even more

You won’t find too many people out there who don’t think Major League Baseball’s “Field of Dreams” game is insanely cool.

It’s based on the 1989 film and you get a nostalgia hit from just watching it. Whether it’s the OG uniforms the teams are wearing or the legit cornfield in the backdrop. everything about it just feels so poetic. It’s just beautiful. It takes you back to that place you were as a kid again.

It means a lot for most players to play in this game, but Joey Votto explained exactly why it means so much to him. He got very personal and it was so touching.

Votto explained that he grew up on this movie. It’s what sparked the drive for him to be where he is today. He also explained how it connects him to his father, who he lost more than 14 years ago.

I’ll let him explain the rest.

That’s good stuff from Votto, man. Very touching. Almost feels like someone is peeling onions in the crib right now. Sheesh.

Fans appreciated this story so much from him.
