John Mulaney overexplaining the Field of Dreams plot while at the Oscars was a perfect bit

John Mulaney was right: The plot of ‘Field of Dreams’ is truly wild.

During the 2024 Oscars, comedian John Mulaney presented the Academy Award for Best Sound.

While this easily could have become a monotonous moment in the broadcast if left in the hands of another presenter, Mulaney turned this one of the most memorable segments from the show.

The comedian began by talking about sound design as a concept before eventually detouring to a non-sequitur about the 1989 film Field of Dreams. It was a masterful summary of a beloved baseball movie that, in retrospect, has a plot that makes no sense at all.

Here is just a sampling of Mulaney had to say:

“Or what about the moment in Field of Dreams when we hear: ‘If you build it, he will come.’ And then Costner does it. He builds a baseball field. Or I guess he doesn’t build it. He mows down corn and then there is a field and then he’s like: ‘I’m going to watch ghosts play baseball.’ And the bank is like: ‘You want to play your mortgage?’ And he’s like: ‘Nah, I’m going to watch ghosts play baseball.’ And then he finds James-Earl Jones, who wrote The Boatrocker, which I thought was a real book deep into my 20s.”

Mulaney continued providing even more details about the film (and his suspected rules about “ghost baseball”) and it was so perfectly silly.

It was also yet another reason why Mulaney is considered a favorite to eventually replace Jimmy Kimmel as the host at the Oscars in the future.

The Godzilla Minus One team brought baby Godzillas to the Oscars and it’s totally awesome

Baby Godzillas for the win!

The staff behind Godzilla Minus One brought baby Godzillas to the Oscars, plus Godzilla-themed shoes and it’s the best thing we’ve seen all day.

If you’re going to show up to the Academy Awards, THIS is how you do it. The director of Godzilla Minus One, Takashi Yamazaki, started the party by showing up on the Oscars red carpet with a golden Godzilla that was also dressed for the occasion. His team was not far behind him, with Godzillas of their own and matching Godzilla-themed shoes.

If that wasn’t enough, when Godzilla Minus One received the award for Best Visual Effects, the group celebrated with their baby Godzillas.

John Cena showed up naked to the Oscars, and we can’t un-Cena it

A naked John Cena was not on our bingo card.

John Cena seemingly presented the award for Best Costume Design at the Oscars while naked. Yes, NAKED.

Jimmy Kimmel and John Cena surprised the entire audience at the Academy Awards with the naked body of Cena. Kimmel was reminiscing about a previous Academy Awards moment when a man streaked across the stage. He then asks the audience, “Can you imagine if a nude man ran across the stage today?” At that point, Cena was supposed to streak across the stage but was “afraid” to do the deed.

Kimmel told him to stop making it weird. That’s when John slowly inched his way out to the podium, with only an envelope covering his nether region, to present the award for Best Costume Design. He fittingly opened his award presentation dialogue with “Costumes are so important.”

Da’Vine Joy Randolph thanked her publicist during her Oscar’s Best Supporting Actress speech and fans loved it

“You don’t have a publicist like I have a publicist!”

Da’Vine Joy Randolph is on cloud nine after winning Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Holdovers. She was so excited and grateful that she shouted out her publicist, and fans started making memes because of the shoutout.

Listen, when you win an Academy Award, you want to thank all the people who helped get you there. That’s exactly what Da’Vine Joy Randolph did after she won her first Oscar. During an incredibly heartfelt acceptance speech, Da’Vine shouted out her mom, a teacher and her publicist for helping her get to that moment, especially because she never thought it was her life’s journey to act. (See the 2:12 mark of the clip below.)

Da’Vine shared this with the audience:

“I have to give a special shoutout to my publicist. I know y’all said don’t say nothing about no publicist, but you don’t have a publicist like I have a publicist!”

Her shoutout immediately had fans making memes:

Who is Vanessa Hudgens’ husband? Meet MLB hopeful Cole Tucker

Tucker signed a minor-league deal with Seattle.

Actress Vanessa Hudgens arrived to the red carpet ahead of the 2024 Academy Awards, debuting her baby bump and announcing her pregnancy with husband Cole Tucker.

Tucker and Hudgens had met back in 2021 and the couple got married in late 2023 after their engagement in February of that year.

Tucker, who was once considered among the Pirates’ top prospect, has bounced around between the minors and MLB the past few seasons. After one season in the Rockies’ minor league system, Tucker signed a minor-league deal with the Seattle Mariners and reported to spring training in Arizona.

In limited time, he has struggled in spring training — batting just .143 in seven at-bats.

The 27-year-old will likely start the season in Triple-A Tacoma.
