Peter King ranks Peyton Manning No. 1 on list of nicest QBs to interview

In his final ‘Football Morning in America’ column, Peter King named Peyton Manning the nicest quarterback he ever interviewed.

Legendary sportswriter Petter King announced his retirement from writing last month. King served as a Sports Illustrated writer from 1989-2018, writing his weekly column Monday Morning Quarterback before he left SI to write for NBC Sports, penning the weekly column Football Morning in America.

In his final Football Morning in America column before he retired, King ranked the nicest quarterbacks he has interviewed, and Peyton Manning was ranked No. 1.

“We’ve talked about everything under the sun,” King wrote of Manning. “I called him Chris Mortensen — he used to want me to come to his training camp last, so he could download info on the other teams I’d seen.”

Peyton’s brother, Eli Manning, had a funny reaction to King’s list on Twitter/X:

While athletes sometimes get a bad reputation for being complicated as their star and profile rise, it is great to hear that Manning never let his superstardom get to his head.

The former quarterback shared this post on his Instagram page after King announced his retirement:

Manning, 47, retired from the NFL after winning Super Bowl 50 with the Denver Broncos following the 2015 season.

Peter King rips Steelers for stubborn stance on QB Kenny Pickett

It’ll be tough for the Steelers to hang with the big dogs in the AFC North, let alone if they reach the playoffs, without a QB who can consistently put points on the scoreboard.

If the reports coming out of Pittsburgh aren’t just smoke and mirrors, the Steelers have no plans to bring in a veteran starter this offseason.

NFL columnist Peter King thinks the Steelers’ stubborn stance is crazy, and who can blame him? They’ll need to see significant improvement in Kenny Pickett‘s performance — and a healthy season — to get them to contending status. And there’s no guarantee, especially based on his history, that it’ll happen.

King wrote what all Steelers fans are feeling right now in his Feb. 19 Football Morning in America column. “I think, speaking of the Steelers, longtime beat man on the team Gerry Dulac reported the other day that the Steelers ‘are not interested in bringing in a quarterback who wants to be a starter.’ Come again? In a division with Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson and Deshaun Watson, the Steelers would actually choose to enter camp with Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph (should he sign in free agency with Pittsburgh)? That sounds like a colossal misjudgment of your quarterback position.”

It’s a colossal misjudgment, indeed. It’ll be challenging for the Steelers to hang with the big dogs in the AFC North, let alone if they reach the playoffs, without a quarterback who can consistently put points on the scoreboard.

Maybe Kenny Pickett will prove us all wrong in 2024.

Peter King: Steelers should sign QB Jimmy Garoppolo after Raiders release

The quarterback of the day, for Monday, Feb. 19, is Jimmy Garoppolo.

Another day, another quarterback floated for the Pittsburgh Steelers. I guess that’s what happens when your Hall of Fame quarterback retires, and your succession plan is Mitch Trubisky and a first-rounder who, in hindsight, hasn’t shown first-round chops.

The quarterback of the day for Monday, Feb. 19, is Jimmy Garoppolo. It’s not the first time he’s been linked to the Steelers, and it won’t be the last. Prior to 2022 free agency, the late John Clayton thought he’d be a solid option for Pittsburgh, and even Ryan Shazier endorsed him.

Now it’s NBC Sports’ Peter King, who’s had a lot of things to say recently about the Steelers quarterback situation.

In today’s Football Morning in America column, he opined about what could be next for the two-time Super Bowl champion following news of the Raiders plan to release him after suspension for PEDs.

“I think Jimmy Garoppolo’s two-game PED suspension throws a wrench into his quarterbacking future, obviously,” King wrote. “And while no one’s going to feel sorry for a guy who, per overthecap.com, has made $148.8 million in a nice but over-valued career, what team will take a shot on him as a starter when he’s on the street this off-season—knowing he’s out for the first two games? Pittsburgh, maybe?”

It’s a good thought, one that most Steelers fans had — even if it was fleeting. But the keyword “starter” should eliminate Pittsburgh as an option. Apparently, the team isn’t interested in a quarterback whose presence makes presumed starter Kenny Pickett feel threatened. That leaves guys like Garoppolo and any other signal-caller who can help the Steelers immediately to other teams with more urgent outlooks.

Which Bills players made Peter King’s all-time NFL 53-man roster list?

Four total:

Around the same time as the Super Bowl, NFL honors and Pro Bowl each year is the unveiling of player that will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The 2024 class was announced in early February and while the Buffalo Bills don’t have any former players in there this year, plenty of ex-Bills players are already considered some of the all-time greats.

With all the football hype in the air over the past few weeks, longtime NFL writer for NBC Sports’ Peter King put together his list of players he would include on his all-time roster. Among them, four players have featured in a Buffalo uniform.

Here are all four:

Peter King says Bills’ Damar Hamlin not winning Comeback POTY award ‘absurd’

Peter King of NBC Sports recently wrote that Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin not winning Comeback Player of the Year was “absurd.”

The 2023 NFL season is over and once again, the Buffalo Bills lost the chance at the league title to the eventual NFL champion, the Kansas City Chiefs. While the sting of another missed opportunity is still there for Buffalo’s fanbase despite it happening weeks ago, there is another event that took place that seems to have a sting of its own.

As Bills Wire previously covered, Bills safety Damar Hamlin lost out on the Comeback Player of the Year award to Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco. Well, there is one person in the national media who was not happy with that decision at all: Peter King of NBC Sports.

Granted, Flacco went from being on his couch in November to leading the Browns to the playoffs after quarterbacking the team to a 4-1 record. However, Hamlin came back to the field after suffering cardiac arrest last season against the Cincinnati Bengals, an event that almost cost him his life, let alone his career.

To be fair, Hamlin lost to Flacco by a narrow margin so it’s clear that voters saw the importance of Hamlin’s comeback while others felt that Flacco deserved the award as well. Here’s what King had to say about Flacco winning the award instead of Hamlin:

“It’s ridiculous that Joe Flacco, who came back from sitting on his couch for two-and-a-half months, won Comeback Player over Damar Hamlin, who came back from having to be resuscitated back to life on a football field last January. What’s stronger than ridiculous? Absurd? Okay. It was absurd. Eight voters did not have Hamlin in their top three Comeback candidates. I simply do not understand.”

Peter King: Bills could want to do ‘major surgery’ on Stefon Diggs’ deal

Longtime NFL writer believes Diggs might be upset about this … time will tell:

The Buffalo Bills and Stefon Diggs have an annual tradition each offseason of headlines pointing to whether or not the receiver is happy with the team.

However, NFL writer Peter King of NBC Sports believes where there is smoke this summer, there could be fire.

In a recent “Football Morning In America” column, King notes Diggs and the Bills. Specifically, Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane is named. That makes sense since this is the time of the year when Beane earns his paycheck. King says Beane’s biggest decision this offseason might revolve around Diggs’ contract.

Diggs, 30, has a $27.9 million cap hit in 2024, which King called “quite excessive” given Diggs’ production. King believes that Diggs will be upset about the possibility of Beane trying to change his deal:

Diggs restructured his contract last March. If the Bills want him to accept less money, no one can blame Diggs for being upset with that.

Bills Wire will provide updates on all the work Beane conducts throughout the offseason.

Peter King admits why he voted down T.J. Watt for DPOY

Peter King didn’t vote for T.J. Watt as DPOY.

The race for Defensive Player of the Year is as hotly contested as any has been in recent years. Pundits are all using their own forms of verbal gymnastics to justify their picks including longtime NFL writer Peter King.

King explained his reasoning for voting Pittsburgh Steelers EDGE T.J. Watt third on his Defensive Player of the Year ballot and his explanation creates a real slipper slope on a couple of fronts.

First, he uses Pro Football Focus grades. This might be the most polarizing way of judging the best defender in the NFL. But honestly, it isn’t the most questionable. King uses the fact that Garrett played on the best defensive in the league as the rationale for his vote.

If we start handing out individual awards for group effort, we’ve given up. The Steelers are 1-11 without Watt in the lineup. The Steelers defense was decimated by injuries this season and Watt continued to play well regardless. Rewarding a player who can produce while being surrounded by other excellent players doesn’t really doesn’t line up with the spirit of the reward.

Peter King says Mike Vrabel would be ‘perfect’ coach for Seahawks

Watch Peter King on why he thinks Vrabel would be perfect for the Seahawks.

There’s a new contender in the mix for the Seahawks’ head coach vacancy. Yesterday it was reported by Adam Schefter at ESPN that Seattle was interested in talking to former Titans head coach Mike Vrabel.

Watch Peter King on why he thinks Vrabel would be perfect for the Seahawks.

Vrabel interviewed with the Chargers yesterday and the Falcons are also reportedly interested in speaking with him.

Seahawks general manager John Schneider is casting a wide net, though. The team has reportedly sent out interview requests for eight different coordinators around the league – including former Seahawks/current Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn – and are in the process of going through those. Fans should expect Schneider to take his time with the search and make a deliberate, carefully thought-out choice.

Peter King thinks Broncos will start Jarrett Stidham in 2024

“I believe the Broncos will enter 2024 with Jarrett Stidham as their quarterback,” Peter King said.

After benching quarterback Russell Wilson, the Denver Broncos have turned the offense over to Jarrett Stidham, at least for a two-game stretch.

Denver’s quarterback plan beyond the 2023 season is uncertain. The Broncos insist that they have not made a long-term decision on Wilson yet, but the quarterback expects to be released by the team in March.

Assuming that happens, Stidham would be left as the only quarterback on the roster going into 2024 (Ben DiNucci will become an unrestricted free agent in March if he’s not added to the 53-man roster before Week 18).

So, what’s the plan for next season? Peter King of NBC Sports believes Stidham could be Sean Payton’s QB1 entering 2024.

“Unless Jarrett Stidham absolutely stinks in the last two weeks, I believe the Broncos will enter 2024 with Jarrett Stidham as their quarterback and see what happens,” King said last week. “They’ll bring somebody else in [to pair with him].”

It’s not a far-fetched take — in fact, Broncos Wire shares the same opinion. Drafting a promising young QB to develop behind Stidham would give the team a cap-friendly path forward while they eat Wilson’s dead money.

Stidham is set to have a salary cap hit of $7 million next season. The 14th overall pick in next year’s draft is estimated to have a cap hit just north of $3 million. Having their top two quarterbacks account for $10 million worth of cap space might be the best course of action for Denver in 2024.

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin named Peter King’s ‘Goat of the Week’

Peter King flippantly named Mike Tomlin “Goat of the Week” in his Football Morning in America column.

Each week in the NFL is littered with bad coaching decisions, and one of them this time around unsurprisingly belongs to none other than Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.

The media highlighted his awful Week 15 decision to punt instead of trusting the usually reliable leg of kicker Chris Boswell when down by 11 with 18 minutes to play.

Tomlin had an opportunity to put points on the board when Pittsburgh had a fourth down at the Indianapolis Colts’ 39-yard line. He opted to bypass giving Boswell — who made five of six from 50 and beyond this season — a chance to make it a one-score game on a 57-yard attempt under the dome of Lucas Oil Stadium.

Boswell was on the field, ready to help his squad when he was called off. And his disapproval was shared by Steelers faithful everywhere.

Tomlin trusted his inconsistent punter and that approach didn’t work. While Tomlin said he hoped to pin the Colts deep inside their five-yard line, Pressley Harvin III netted just 22 yards, setting them up at their 17.

The decision on the previous play was almost as egregious.

“On the play before, instead of choosing to get Boswell closer on third-and-14, the Steelers, in a big offensive hole, threw incomplete deep for George Pickens instead of just trying to get it closer to make it a one-score game,” NBC Sports columnist Peter King wrote. “Bad day for the Steelers and their coach.”

For that, King flippantly named Tomlin “Goat of the Week” in his Football Morning in America column.

Tomlin clearly over-thought the decision and second-guessed himself in the process. He explained his reasoning in his postgame presser.

“You know, on the play before, I wanted to be aggressive and take a shot down the field, and that wasn’t afforded to us,” Tomlin said on Saturday. “And so, then I wanted to check the ball down, we didn’t. We threw the ball out of bounds, and we didn’t improve our field goal positioning.

“We were looking at a 56, 57-yard field goal with our defense leaking the way that it was leaking. I wanted to maintain a posture where we protected them, as opposed to potentially put them in harm’s way. If you miss a long field goal, the defense is working on a short field. And I just didn’t feel like we were positioned to expose them in that way.

I thought it was more prudent, given the amount of time left in play, to try to work them on the long field and protect the defense.”

The leaking defense gave up a field goal on a 15-play, 70-yard drive to go up 27-13.

We all know how it went from there.
