Panthers 2024 roster cuts tracker

Keep it here as we track each move the Panthers make in getting to their initial 53-man roster

Despite the difficult decisions that lie ahead, Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales isn’t shying away from the challenge of getting down to his very first 53-man roster.

“Yeah, it’s hard. And I’m excited for it,” he told reporters after last Wednesday’s practice. “When you respect and regard the whole unit and you’re kinda bringing everybody up at the same time—with the teaching, with the practices, the drill work and all those things as we improve everyone—it makes the decisions harder and harder.

“So I’m really excited about doing this with Dan [Morgan], with Brandt [Tilis], with the coaching staff. We’ve kinda had our touch-points throughout camp to evaluate where we’re at right now, and then we’ll have that culmination after we get through this last game.”

Well, they got through that game—besting the host Buffalo Bills in their final preseason outing of the summer on Saturday. So now, the “excitement” begins.

Keep it here, from now until 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, as we track each of the team’s moves in the path to their initial 53-man roster for the 2024 season.

Panthers’ updated roster following Friday’s free-agent additions

Four fresh faces will join the Panthers at training camp.

Thanks to a handful of moves on Friday, the Carolina Panthers will look slightly different at “Back Together Saturday.”

The team announced the additions of four players yesterday afternoon—wide receiver Devin Carter, tight end Feleipe Franks, outside linebacker Kemoko Turay and cornerback Kinodre Thomas. To make room for the signings, they placed veteran wideout Cam Sims on the reserve/physically unable to perform list and waived receiver Sam Pinckney, offensive lineman Christian Duffie and safety Clayton Isbell.

So, let’s take another updated look at Carolina’s current training camp roster:

Panthers sign 4 players on Friday

The Panthers added a handful of help on Friday.

The Carolina Panthers officially added a handful of players on Friday.

As announced this afternoon, the team has signed four free agents—wide receiver Devin Carter, tight end Feleipe Franks, outside linebacker Kemoko Turay and cornerback Kiondre Thomas.

Turay, whose signing was first reported on by Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston this morning, emerges out of a pass-rushing group that included a few notable tryouts. Carolina also hosted looks for 2017 Pro Bowler Yannick Ngakoue, former Cincinnati Bengal and New York Jet Carl Lawson and Marquis Haynes Sr.—who has spent each of his six NFL campaigns with the Panthers.

The 6-foot-5, 248-pounder was a second-round draft pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 2018. He’s amassed 12.0 career sacks, as well as short stints with the San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons, over five seasons.

To make room for the bunch, the Panthers placed veteran wideout Cam Sims on the reserve/physically unable to perform list and waived receiver Sam Pinckney, offensive lineman Christian Duffie and safety Clayton Isbell.

Falcons injury report: CB A.J. Terrell returns to practice

Falcons Week 11 Injury Report: CB A.J. Terrell returned to practice on Wednesday but was limited

Atlanta Falcons cornerback A.J. Terrell made his return to practice on Wednesday after missing the team’s three previous games due to a hamstring injury.

Terrell was a limited participant but said, “it’s up in the air,” when asked if he’ll play this weekend against the Bears, according to ESPN’s Michael Rothstein.

The Falcons listed two other players on their first Week 11 injury report. Tight end Feleipe Franks (calf) did not participate and safety Erik Harris (foot) was limited.

Feleipe Franks adjusting well to new position

Feleipe Franks could see the field at a new position according to reports from the Atlanta Falcons training camp.

The Atlanta Falcons have added two new quarterbacks to the roster for the 2022 season, one from free agency in former Oregon star Marcus Mariota, and one from the NFL Draft in Desmond Ritter from Cincinnati.

That leaves former Arkansas quarterback [autotag]Feleipe Franks[/autotag] looking up the ladder for a chance to see significant playing time under center.

Or, does it?

Franks got looks at tight end during the Falcons’ OTA’s in June and has continued to see time at the position as the Falcons begin their preparations for the new season.

According to reports, Franks is making quite a splash at the position. According to Falcons Wire, practicing well at tight end could earn Franks a spot on the roster.

Feleipe Franks at tight end might actually work out for the Falcons if the past few days are any indication. Franks has great size and speed, it just depends on other aspects of his game — like catching and blocking — that will determine his success or failure. It’s been an encouraging start for Franks, and he added another good day of practice on Friday, per team reporter Tori McElhaney.

Franks will continue to get looks at quarterback as well according to reports. The first time that Franks will see action at tight end against another NFL team will be on Friday, August 12 when the Falcons open the preseason at Detroit.

Feleipe Franks gets look at another position during Falcons OTAs

The former Razorback QB appears to be exploring options for the upcoming NFL season.

A former Razorback signal-caller appears to be improving his odds for more playing time, even if it means moving to another position.

[autotag]Feleipe Franks[/autotag], who was the starting quarterback for Arkansas during the 2020 season following a four-year career at Florida, was picked up by the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent after the 2021 NFL Draft. Despite being brought in Atlanta as a quarterback, it appears that Franks is moving to tight end, according to ESPN Falcons reporter Michael Rothstein.

Franks is still listed as one of three quarterbacks on the Falcons official roster, joining offseason addition Marcus Mariota and draft pick Desmond Ritter. The move potential move could be crucial in finding more playing time in Atlanta, as a potential back-up option to fellow former Gator Kyle Pitts.

Last season, Franks attempted one pass for Atlanta, which was intercepted. He also carried the football three times for six yards.

In his lone season in Fayetteville, Franks passed for 2,017 yards and 17 touchdowns while breaking the school’s record for completion percentage by completing 68.7% of his passes.

Former Gator Emory Jones transferring to this Pac-12 school

Emory Jones has found himself a new home and we wish nothing but the best to him.

Florida football saw its primary starting quarterback from the 2021 campaign [autotag]Emory Jones[/autotag] attempt to exit the program through the transfer portal twice these past several months and it appears that he has finally found a new home with the Arizona State Sun Devils to continue his collegiate career. The redshirt junior has two years of eligibility remaining thanks to the NCAA’s blanket waiver for the 2020 COVID season that gave student-athletes an extra year to play and is looking to capitalize on that additional time.

Originally entering the portal back in December, Jones rescinded his decision in March, when he made a 180-degree turn and fully committed to Florida. A few days later, he flipped the tables once again, announcing his intent to find greener pastures to play football while remaining at UF through the spring semester to become a Gator graduate.

Head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] had the following to say about Jones.

“Emory has conducted himself with nothing but class and selflessness. It is not surprising that he has earned the respect of his teammates, coaches and this entire organization. I am proud of him for everything he’s accomplished and for his commitment to complete his degree this spring. He is a young man with a bright future and I wish him nothing but the best.”

Jones threw for 2,734 yards and 19 touchdowns while rushing for 758 yards and four scores over 13 games last season after playing second fiddle for his first three years to [autotag]Feleipe Franks[/autotag] and [autotag]Kyle Trask[/autotag]. Redshirt freshman [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag], who is expected to take the helm in 2022, put a great deal of pressure on him from the backup position, putting up moments of brilliance that often outshone Jones’ mediocre performances.

Falcons place two rookies on reserve/COVID-19 list

For the second day in a row, the Atlanta Falcons placed multiple players on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

For the second day in a row, the Atlanta Falcons placed multiple players on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Safety Richie Grant and quarterback Feleipe Franks were the latest members of the team to land on the NFL’s virus designation, bringing Atlanta’s total to eight players.

Grant, a second-round pick out of UCF, has played mostly at nickel corner this season despite being drafted as a safety. Franks was signed as an undrafted free agent and has played both as a backup quarterback and at tight end.

This recent COVID surge isn’t unique to the Falcons, though, the NFL’s been having widespread outbreaks over the past week alone.

Atlanta heads to Buffalo in Week 17 for a matchup against the AFC East-leading Bills.

Data proves it: KJ Jefferson had best first-year as starter in modern Arkansas history

Of the 14 first-year starters Arkansas has had since 2002, KJ Jefferson checks in above some legendary names.

To say KJ Jefferson’s first season as a starter in college football was a success is a bit of an understatement.

The sophomore went from being ranked as the No. 14 quarterback in the SEC to arguably the No. 3. He completed 184 of 275 passes for 2,578 yards with 21 touchdowns and three interceptions. He ran for another 554 yards and five touchdowns on 126 carries.

Most importantly, he led Arkansas to an 8-4 regular-season record – its best since 2011 – and an appearance in the Outback Bowl.

Determining a placing for where he ranks is impossible. Too many factors to consider. So we’ll try our best. And, alas, not with all Arkansas quarterbacks. Let’s limit the scope to Arkansas quarterbacks of the last 20 years in their first year as starter. Going before that is a disservice to both parties because of how much the game has changed.

So here they are, comparisons of each Arkansas first-year starter since 2002.

3 Falcons quarterbacks throw 4th-quarter interceptions in loss to Patriots

Three Atlanta Falcons quarterbacks threw interceptions in the shutout loss to the Patriots

No matter who Atlanta Falcons coach Arthur Smith turned to on Thursday, his quarterbacks kept throwing to the New England Patriots.

Matt Ryan had a brutal night and was mercifully allowed to watch the finish after throwing a pair of picks in the fourth quarter of the 25-0 loss.

Josh Rosen replaced the veteran from Boston College and was inept, finding Kyle Van Noy, who turned the interception into a pick-six.

Feleipe Franks came into the game and threw his first NFL pass to New England’s Adrian Phillips. The other rookie from Florida — Kyle Pitts would be the primary Gators’ rookie on the Falcons — won’t want to remember his first pro pass or this game. Neither will his other quarterbacks.

Remarkably, all four interceptions came in the fourth quarter.
