Boston alum Dennis Schroder to return to Los Angeles Lakers on one-year deal

The former Celtics signee has averaged 21.6 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 7.3 assists (fourth best in the European Basketball Championships) per game in the Eurobasket.

It might have been a day tinged with sadness for Boston Celtics alumnus Dennis Schroder after his German National Team was bounced from the European Basketball Championship by the Spanish National Team. But the German floor general put a positive spin on things soon after the game ended by having his agent Marc Bartlestein share with Substack’s Marc Stein that Schroder will be rejoining the Los Angeles Lakers.

The former Boston point guard had offers from several teams around the NBA after his strong outing in the EuroBasket, per Stein. Schroder will sign a one-year, $2.64 million deal according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, joining a backcourt that, at least for now, still includes Russel Westbrook along with Patrick Beverley.

The former Celtics signee has averaged 21.6 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 7.3 assists (fourth best in the European Basketball Championships) per game in the Eurobasket.

Despite a massive game from Dennis Schroder, Spain ousts Germany 96-91 from the EuroBasket

The Celtics alum’s EuroBasket swan song was quite impressive — but ultimately not enough.

It would be one of his best games of the 2022 European Basketball Championship for his German National Team, but Dennis Schroder’s big game would not prove to be enough to get Germany past the Spanish National Team in EuroBasket knockout play on Friday, Schroder’s squad falling 96-91.

The former Boston Celtics floor general put up 30 points, a rebound, 8 assists, and 2 steals in the loss while shooting 11-of-17 overall and 3-of-7 from 3. His fellow Celtics alum Daniel Theis added another 10 points, 3 boards, and an assist in Germany’s attempt to make the gold medal game.

That honor will fall to Spain, who will now face France for the 2022 EuroBasket title thanks in part to another Boston alum.

That would be Spanish big man Juancho Hernangomez, who chipped in 13 points, 3 rebounds, and a block off of the bench for his Spanish National Team.

EuroBasket 2022 semifinal: Usman Garuba shines as Spain advances past Germany

Rockets prospect Usman Garuba continues to play very well as a defender and facilitator for Spain, which advanced Friday to the EuroBasket 2022 championship.

Houston Rockets prospect Usman Garuba isn’t starting for Spain at the 2022 European Basketball Championship (EuroBasket), owing to the veteran frontcourt duo of Willy and Juancho Hernangomez. But the 20-year-old forward is still playing a critical role.

“Our idea was that Lorenzo (Brown) would lead the team in attack, and Usman in defense,” Spanish national team coach Sergio Scariolo said of Garuba earlier this week. “He is an extraordinary defender. He can change everything. He has a big heart. He makes mistakes, of course. He is very young, but we trust him a lot.”

That was certainly on display in Friday’s semifinal versus favored Germany, where Garuba played a key role in the second half as a defender and facilitator. With the 6-foot-8 forward leading much of the charge, Spain rallied from a 10-point deficit late in the third quarter to defeat Germany, 96-91 (box score). Germany had two former Rockets on its roster in Dennis Schroder and Daniel Theis, who were each teammates with Garuba during the 2021-22 season.

In 18 minutes, Garuba had a team-high 7 assists, 4 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots, and Spain was +8 with Garuba on the floor. With the game played in a raucous, primetime environment in Berlin, Spain was a moderate underdog entering Friday’s action.

Scroll on for a look at highlights and analysis of Garuba’s play. Spain will conclude its EuroBasket run with Sunday’s championship game versus France, which takes place at 1:30 Central time.

Garuba will then travel back to his NBA home of Houston over the following days, where training camp for the 2022-23 Rockets season is set to begin on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

Stein: ‘Rising buzz’ Boston Celtics alum Dennis Schroder will land new NBA deal with strong EuroBasket play

The German point guard’s play in the European Basketball Championship has NBA teams considering a deal for Schroder, it seems.

Veteran point guard Dennis Schroder has yet to find a new home in the NBA, but with the way the Boston Celtics alumnus has been tearing things up in the European Basketball Championship (often called the “EuroBasket“), he may not have to wait much longer to get a new deal, according to what Substack’s Marc Stein is hearing.

Noting he was brave to play in the EuroBasket without an NBA deal in hand, Stein related that “there’s a rising buzz in league circles about his job prospects,” adding that “Schroder will almost certainly have a new team by month’s end after helping host Germany make the semifinals.”

The German floor general has been averaging 20.2 points, 2.7 rebounds, and an impressive 7.2 assists per game with the German National Team in EuroBasket play this year so far and has been a major part of Germany’s success to date.

Celtics alum Guerschon Yabusele powers 95-54 French drubbing of Poland in EuroBasket

The French National Team crushed the Polish National Team 95-54 behind the Dancing Bear’s white-hot shooting.

In the knockout round of the 2022 European Basketball Championship (better known as the EuroBasket), Boston Celtics big man alum Guerschon Yabusele led an absolute shellacking of Poland for France. The French National Team crushed the Polish National Team 95-54 behind the Dancing Bear’s 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals on white-hot 9-of-12 shooting overall and 4-of-6 efficiency from beyond the arc.

Fellow Boston alum Evan Fournier added another 10 points, 4 boards, as many assists, and a steal in the victory for France, and former Celtics center Vincent Poirier chipped in another 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists to secure the victory and a spot in the gold medal game for their EuroBasket squad.

“The goal has always been the gold medal,” said teammate and Minnesota Timberwolves star bog man Rudy Gobert after the game via Eurohoops’ John Rammas. “One more game to go.”

Why stashed Boston Celtics guard Yam Madar is in no hurry to join the NBA

Hint: It’s all about opportunity.

Stashed Boston Celtics point guard Yam Madar is in no hurry to come over to the NBA just to struggle to get on the floor with the parent club or spend time schlepping around the G League to get the time he needs to grow his game.

Instead, the Israeli floor general has been taking advantage of an opportunity to helm the Israel National Team in the 2022 European Basketball Championship and to be featured with his European pro team, Partizan NIS, in the season to come. The Beit Dagan native does still hope to make the NBA in the future, but on his terms and when he is ready to make an impact.

Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear a good breakdown on this and his game put together by the folks at the Treese YouTube channel.

WATCH: Goran Dragic throws inbound pass off defender’s back vs. Poland

The veteran guard made a crafty play that Poland didn’t see coming.

To play point guard, having a high basketball IQ is certainly an important skillset.

For Bulls guard Goran Dragic, the IQ and veteran savviness is an asset.

In Slovenia’s loss to Poland on Wednesday in the EuroBasket quarter-finals, Dragic made a crafty play that caught the eye of NBA Twitter.

When making an inbounds pass halfway through the first quarter, Dragic caught Poland’s defense slacking, tossing the ball off the defender’s back to easily lay the ball in for two points.

Check out the heads up play by Dragic below.

Goran Dragic, Slovenia falls to Poland in quarter-finals of EuroBasket

Slovenia’s efforts to repeat as EuroBasket champions falls short.

Bulls veteran guard Goran Dragic and the Slovenian National team were looking to repeat as EuroBasket champions this summer, yet Poland had other their own plans.

On Wednesday, Poland upset the defending champions 90-87 to move onto the semi-finals and a date with France.

Slovenia fell behind by double-digits in the first-half due to sloppy turnovers and an onslaught of energy and shooting from the Polish.

Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic fouled out with just over three minutes remaining, leaving the keys to the car in Dragic’s hands. Slovenia cut into Poland’s lead and had a chance at a game-tying three with just two seconds remaining but missed.

Dragic finished with 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists on 7-of-15 shooting from the field and 6-of-11 from 3-point range.

This likely marks the final EuroBasket appearance for the 36-year-old Slovenian legend.

Four Boston Celtics alumni battle as France beats Italy 93-85 in overtime to advance in EuroBasket play

Italy up short against the 2020 Tokyo silver medalists and their deeper reserve of NBA-caliber talent in the European Basketball Championship.

The Italian National Team fell to the French National Team 93-85 in overtime in EuroBasket play on Wednesday afternoon, Italy coming up short against the 2020 Tokyo silver medalists and their deeper reserve of NBA-caliber talent in the European Basketball Championship.

On the French side of things, former Boston Celtics shooting guard Evan Fournier put up 17 points, 3 rebounds, and as many assists in just over 33 minutes of play in the win, while ex-Boston big man Guerschon Yabusele joined him in adding 15 points, 7 boards, 2 assists, and 3 steals in a little less than 42 minutes of game time.

Fellow Celtics alum Vincent Poirier added a rebound, an assist, and a block in a little over 5 minutes of play.

On Italy’s side, Boston forward alum Gigi Datome provided the Italian National Team with 12 points, 2 boards, an assist, a steal, and a block, but it wasn’t enough to get past France in the knockout stage of competition.

“Congratulations to France, they deserve the win,” said Datome via Eurohoops John Rammas.

“Today everyone will be sad and frustrated, but from tomorrow we have to be proud of ourselves because we show that we belong to the level of Serbia and France, which are the best teams in the world.”

Celtics alums Dennis Schroder, Daniel Theis help Germany upset Greece, Giannis in EuroBasket play

The War on Theis saw its most decisive win, with the former Boston big man’s face taking the hit that got the Greek Freak ejected on the way to a 107-96 knockout victory.

Two Boston Celtics alumni were key to the German National Team’s upset 107-96 win over the Greek National Team and Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo in EuroBasket knockout play on Tuesday. Former Celtics floor general Dennis Schroder led Germany with 26 points, 3 rebounds, 8 assists, and a steal, and ex-Boston big man Daniel Theis chipped in another 13 points, a game-high 16 boards, an assist, and as many steals in the upset.

Theis in particular put his body on the line for exactly the right play, the War on Theis seeing a rare win for the German big with the Greek Freak picking up a second unsportsmanlike foul after colliding with the Salzgitter native late in the game’s final frame.

With the win, an unexpectedly dangerous Germany remains in the mix to win it all, Boston alumni playing a major role in that synergy along with the play of Orlando Magic second-year forward Franz Wagner.
