Spain outlasts Finland, Lauri Markkanen with 15 points, 4 boards from Juancho Hernangomez

The Celtics alum added key offense off of the bench to keep Spain’s EuroBasket hopes alive.

Former Boston Celtics big man Juancho Hernangomez picked a great moment to have one of his better games of the European Basketball Championship. His help off the bench for Spain kept Finland at bay in a 100-90 victory during the EuroBasket quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Hernangomez put up 15 points, 4 rebounds, an assist and a steal in just over 26 minutes of playing time for Spain, which won despite 28 points and 11 boards from Finnish and Utah Jazz star Lauri Markkanen. Hernangomez had a solid game everywhere but from beyond the arc (hitting just 2-of-7 from 3), connecting on 5-of-11 attempts overall and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. He committed three personal fouls but no turnovers.

Spain will face Germany in Friday’s semifinals.

Spain’s national coach sees Usman Garuba as extraordinary defender

Sergio Scariolo, head coach of Spain’s national team, sees an extraordinary defender in Rockets prospect Usman Garuba. “He can change everything,” Scariolo said via translator.

Sergio Scariolo, head coach of Spain’s national men’s basketball team, sees an “extraordinary defender” in second-year Houston Rockets forward Usman Garuba. Scariolo commented after his side defeated Lithuania, 102-94 (box score), in overtime to qualify for the final eight at the European Basketball Championship (EuroBasket 2022).

Garuba had 8 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals in 22 minutes on Saturday, and the 20-year-old’s offensive rebound and tip-in during the final minute of regulation helped Spain force overtime, where they eventually pulled away.

In postgame comments, Scariolo was eager to discuss the strong and versatile defense from his 6-foot-8 forward. Here’s what he said, as relayed by Miguel Lois Vidal (and translated by Twitter):

Our idea was that Lorenzo (Brown) would lead the team in attack, and Usman in defense. He is an extraordinary defender. He can change everything. He has a big heart.

He makes mistakes, of course, he is very young, but we trust him a lot.

Spain was plus-14 in Garuba’s 22 minutes on Saturday. See below for extended highlights of the game versus Lithuania.

Going forward, Garuba and Spain will match up against Finland in Tuesday’s round of eight games. The tip is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. Central. That game can be streamed live via RocketsWatch.

Elsewhere in this weekend’s EuroBasket action, Alperen Sengun and Turkey had its run end with an 87-86 loss (box score) to France. Sengun had 8 points and 5 rebounds in 22 minutes.

Later this month, both prospects will report to training camp in Houston to begin the 2022-23 NBA season. Garuba missed much of his rookie year due to injuries, but a strong showing at EuroBasket may help him build momentum as he looks to earn playing time.

Bulls’ Goran Dragic defends Giannis Antetokounmpo from Gilbert Arenas’ slander

Chicago Bulls free-agent addition Goran Dragic defended Giannis Antetokounmpo from Gilbert Arenas’ recent criticism.

Chicago Bulls free-agent signee Goran Dragic had much to say after Slovenia qualified for the EuroBasket quarterfinals on Saturday.

But, it was on something that happened far away from Germany, where Slovenia beat Belgium by 16 points.

Dragic was asked about former NBA star turned shock-value personality Gilbert Arenas going on a tangent recently bashing Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo’s game during an episode of the “No Chill” podcast.

This was his response:

“Giannis (Antetokounmpo) is the MVP. Gilbert Arenas is not. Was he ever the MVP? I don’t think so. So he can’t talk about Giannis. Giannis won the championship, won the MVP award. He has been the Defensive Player of the Year.”

Arenas said this about Antetokounmpo:

“The media says he’s the best player in the league. Not even close, just stop it. I can look at his game and say he doesn’t understand basketball yet

“He plays the sport, he won a championship, cool. But he doesn’t really understand how to be better, how to train his body.”

Arenas’ endless pursuit of shock value for the sake of being funny or outrageous over the years has made him something of a bad influence at worst and simply a person not worth taking seriously at best. What he’s saying is obviously ridiculous, even if there are reasonable qualms about the way he plays.

As for Dragic, his focus after EuroBasket will be looking to help the Bulls have success in the 2022-23 season.

Italy survives Nikola Jokic, sends Serbia home with 94-86 win, help from Celtics alum Luigi Datome

The joke is on the Joker’s Serbian National Team, it seems.

Former Boston Celtics forward Luigi Datome helped his Italian National Team send Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic and Serbia home with a 94-86 win in the knockout phase of the 2022 European Basketball Championship (commonly referred to as the EuroBasket).

The former Celtic came off the bench to put up 6 points, 1 rebound and 2 steals in just over 14 minutes of playing time for Italy. Datome was part of Italy’s solution to replace Danilo Gallinari following his ACL tear. The Montebelluna shot an efficient 2-of-4 from the field, 1-of-3 from beyond the arc and 1-of-2 from the charity stripe.

Datome did not commit a personal foul or a turnover in his time on the floor for Italy.

During the game, Italian coach Gianmarco Pozzecco was ejected with a second technical foul in the third quarter.

After the impressive win, Italy advances to the quarterfinals; its EuroBasket title hopes remain alive.

So many uncharacteristic plays from Jokic down the stretch. Was outright blocked by Melli, and Italians just stuffed his no-look pass. Doesn’t look like his 32 points and 10 rebounds will be enough. Italy on verge of a stunner. – 1:51 PM

More on this storyline

After all thanks to Markkanen’s game, Finland managed to make the Eurobasket quarterfinals for the first time since 1967 and he is happy to do it, not only for himself and his team but also about Petteri Koponen who led Finland back to respectability before Markkanen and he is still along for the ride:  “When I made the team in 2015 it felt great and unreal to being in the same locker room with him. For him to say that, it means a lot. He’s a legend”. -via EuroHoops.net / September 11, 2022

Sarah Todd: Wondering why the Jazz haven’t announced the Donovan Mitchell trade? Well, the physicals haven’t been completed by the Jazz yet. Sexton is set to arrive in UT this week, Markkanen is overseas so its a little tricky. Once physicals are done, the press release will come out -via Twitter @NBASarah / September 6, 2022

Should international players be playing in tourneys like the EuroBasket before the NBA season?

The Celtics likely wish Danilo Gallinari hadn’t — but shouldn’t it still be his decision?

Should international players be playing in the intense, high-volume of play tournaments such as the European Basketball Championship — better known as the EuroBasket — so close to the start of the NBA season? The Boston Celtics likely wish Danilo Gallinari hadn’t — but shouldn’t it still be his decision?

With the 2022-23 preseason slate of games less than a month away and European players participating in EuroBasket 2022 just before training camps convene, there is a case to be made that such participation could be disruptive to the rest and recovery needed as well on the basis of injury risk.

On the other side of the coin, these tourneys are important to European players, and bans might unintentionally reduce the pool of international players willing to play in the NBA.

On top of that, players will play somewhere, even if they aren’t supposed to. Is it not better for them to do so in a league-approved context?

The hosts of ESPN’s “NBA Today” recently debated this topic. Take a look at the clip embedded above to see where they came down on international play and the NBA.

Spain survives Lithuania 102-94 in overtime thanks in part to Celtics alum Juancho Hernangomez

Juancho helped keep Spain’s EuroBasket hopes alive with 13 points off of the bench.

The Spanish National Team will live to play another game in this year’s European Basketball Championship (commonly referred to as the EuroBasket) in no small part thanks to the efforts of Boston Celtics big man alumnus Juancho Hernangomez.

The star of the Netflix “Hustle” film had plenty on display in Spain’s 102-94 overtime win over the Lithuanian National Team on Saturday evening. Hernangomez put up 13 points, 4 rebounds, and a steal in just under 31 minutes of playing time in the victory, shooting a solid 4-of-8 from the floor, all 4 of his misses coming from shits he took beyond the arc.

The former Boston big man also got to the line 6 times, converting 5 of them into extra points for Spain, with no personal fouls or turnovers all game.

“It was almost overwhelming seeing the effort of this time which has nine players who haven’t played in the past in a Eurobasket”, added Spanish head coach Sergio Scariolo via Eurohoops. “We still found a way to win it. You have to give credit to the heart of those guys and it’s a matter of pride”
