Former Spartan Cassius Winston to play in NBA G-League Bubble with Erie BayHawks

Cassius Winston had been averaging 2.2 points, 1 assist and 0.7 rebounds across 7.3 minutes per game this season.

Former Michigan State basketball star Cassius Winston has been sent down to the NBA G League by the Washington Wizards, the team announced on Saturday. Winston will join the Erie Bayhawks of the NBA G League in their bubble located in Orlando this upcoming week.

This shouldn’t be looked at in a negative way whatsoever as this will give Winston more reps than he was able to get with the Wizards currently.

Winston — who was selected by Washington in the second round of this past year’s NBA Draft — had been averaging 2.2 points, 1 assist and 0.7 rebounds across 7.3 minutes per game this season. He has appeared in six games for the Wizards.

It was announced earlier this week that former Spartan (and teammate of Winston) Matt McQuaid will be playing in the NBA G League for the Canton Charge. McQuaid and Winston were both key members on Michigan State’s last Final Four squad in 2019.

Catching up with Badger ballers: Vitto Brown is still a jack of all trades

With the lack of any and all Badger sports to keep us occupied, let’s catch up with past Badger ballers to see where they are at in their careers. For this first installment, we take a look at where sharpshooting former Badger Vitto Brown’s professional basketball career has taken him, as well as his newer venture into the world of food reviews.

One of the first things that enters my mind when I think of Vitto Brown is his angelic singing voice that we enjoyed during national anthems at the Kohl Center and in renditions of March classics:

Not having One Shining Moment could be the worst part of this entire sports cancellation. I leave that up to scholarly debate.

From 2013-17, the sharpshooting forward was an integral part of deep tournament runs for Wisconsin. Brown saw a serious spike in minutes during his junior and senior years, where he averaged over 20 minutes per contest and shot extremely well from distance. Instead of pursuing a music career, the Oklahoma native stuck with basketball and ventured into the NBA’s G-League following his collegiate graduation. The 6-8 forward started his career close to school, playing for the brand new Wisconsin Herd in 2017. After jumping around to a few other G-League destinations, and finding himself in Greece for a short stint, Brown has found a solid role with the Erie Bayhawks, an affiliate of the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans. As just a 24-year old, the stretch four has yet to reach his prime, but steady improvement from year-to-year has put NBA scouts on alert. The former Badger was averaging a career-best 15.2 points per game this year for Erie in the NBA G-League before the league suspended play just three days ago. He has also caught a few bodies:

Brown is averaging G-League career-highs in nearly every statistical category this season including a 38% mark from three, and 6.2 boards. The athletic forward is also known for his tenacious defense, and seems to be a perfect fit for where the NBA has been headed over the last few years. Do not be surprised if you see Vito Brown on an NBA floor near you sometime in the near future.

Brown has not only entertained on the basketball court since his time in Madison, but also has taken up a secondary, part-time gig as an instagram food reviewer for the common man. The self-named “Chef Boyarvee” has you covered on his instagram account “Vitto’s Vittles” with reviews of everything from ice cream to chicken sandwiches. A taste of his content, with one of the hottest items of 2020:

When basketball resumes, whenever it resumes, keep an eye out for Brown as he looks to make his way to the NBA. If the past few years are any indication, the former Badger baller is just getting his professional career started. Oh, and why not keep yourself updated with Vitto’s Vittles in the meantime.
