What went wrong for Michigan State basketball?

Michigan State basketball had a very disappointing season in 2020-21. Let’s examine what went wrong and why the Spartans struggled.

The final four is here and Michigan State basketball is left watching it from home. What makes things worse, the team that knocked them out of the big dance, UCLA, will be playing in Saturday night’s games.

There were high hopes for the Spartans coming into the 2020-21 season, especially after three straight Big Ten championships and a final four appearance in 2019.

Ultimately, the Spartans failed to deliver, giving the fans a very disappointing 15-13 season with a first four exit in the NCAA Tournament.

With a few weeks to digest the season being over, now is a good time to reflect on what went wrong for the Spartans in the 2020-21 campaign.

Tom Izzo comments on UCLA NCAA Tournament run

Tom Izzo gave his comments on the UCLA NCAA Tournament run after his Spartans fell just short of defeating the Bruins in the first four.

[jwplayer NIG71kHM-PROpJzTY]

Michigan State had a 5-point lead with just over one minute left in their first four game against UCLA, a bad final minute leading into overtime and the Bruins got past the Spartans.

Almost two weeks removed from that game, UCLA is still playing and will be heading to the final four.

After witnessing the Bruins historic run, Spartan fans can’t help to think “what if”. Michigan State coach Tom Izzo is no exception to that rule, the head man in East Lansing took to radio to share his mindset.

Bracketology roundup: Where MSU Basketball stands heading into Big Ten Tournament

Championship week is upon us and it is officially bracketology season. Take a look at how MSU fares in the latest bracketology predictions.

It wasn’t long ago when the Michigan State Spartans were staring at a 10-9 record and were on the outside looking in of the NCAA Tournament. A 5-2 stretch that included three wins over top-5 ranked opponents has the Spartans at 15-11 and poised for their twenty-third straight tourney appearance.

[vertical-gallery id=36193]

Michigan State will open Big Ten Tournament play on Thursday against Maryland, needing one more win to feel certain about an NCAA Tournament berth.

A loss could put MSU back on the bubble, but missing the tournament feels unlikely at this point with their resume.

As conference tournaments begin, and the Big Ten’s opening this evening, now is a good time to look at where everything stands in the eyes of Bracketology.
