NFLPA approves new collective bargaining agreement in narrow vote

The NFLPA has voted to approve the proposed collective bargaining agreement.

The NFLPA has voted to approve the proposed collective bargaining agreement. In a statement they released on Twitter, the union said the final vote talley was 1,019 in favor and 959 against. This means there will be no lockout and we’ll have labor peace for at least the next decade.

The new CBA will alter the playoff format and expand the regular season, in addition to some other big changes. Here’s a few key points to know:

  • The preseason schedule will now be only three games
  • Each conference gets one more playoff seed (14 teams total)
  • The regular season will be expanded to 17 games, possibly as early as 2021.
  • Minimum salaries for players jumps over 20%

You can find a more detailed summary of the new CBA here.

Not everyone is going to be happy with the new arrangement. In fact, two Panthers players have been extremely critical of the new CBA.

Safety Eric Reid has called it “a disaster” and has been bringing up the plight of disabled players, who will see significant cuts to their benefits as a result of this vote. Incoming left tackle Russell Okung has accused union leaders of negotiating in bad faith, as well.

Panthers S Eric Reid blasts proposed CBA again: ‘I hope y’all vote no’

Panthers safety Eric Reid has become one of the most vocal opponents of the proposed CBA.

As if a pandemic weren’t enough to disrupt business as usual around the NFL, we’re also in the middle of a tense negotiation between labor and ownership. There’s even tension within the union, as it’s been reported the NFLPA won’t let some members change their votes. Voting is ongoing and open until Saturday at midnight eastern time.

Panthers safety Eric Reid has become one of the most vocal opponents of the proposed CBA. On Monday, he called it a “disaster worse than we could have imagined” after having his attorneys review it.

Since then, he’s shared several more messages on Twitter critical of the proposal, urging his fellow players to vote no. Reid brought up the treatment of his former 49ers teammate Colin Kaepernick and criticized everyone from Stephen A. Smith to Jay-Z, plus some specific points within the proposal.

Here’s a review of what Reid has been saying.

Reid also retweeted this post about disabled NFL players (who aren’t allowed to vote) getting significant cuts in their benefits.

Reid isn’t alone in his sentiments. Incoming left tackle Russell Okung has also been highly critical of the CBA proposal. He has also accused union leaders of negotiating in bad faith.

Eric Reid calls proposed CBA ‘a bigger disaster than we could have imagined’

It sounds like you can write down Carolina safety Eric Reid as a no vote.

This week will be a busy one for NFL players. For one, they will be electing a new President for the player’s union. Incoming Panthers left tackle Russell Okung is among the candidates who want to replace Eric Winston. In addition to settling on new leadership, the NFLPA will be voting on the proposed new collective bargaining agreement.

It sounds like you can write down Carolina safety Eric Reid as a no vote. He just shared a message on Twitter from his attorneys summarizing the proposed deal, calling it a “bigger disaster than we could have imagined.”

Among the points of contention is a proposal to expand the regular season to 17 games as soon as 2021.

The ballots were sent out last Thursday. Players have until a minute before midnight on March 12 to vote.

Panthers S Eric Reid says he played through sprained ankle, MCL in 2019

Reid was on the injury report at different times during the season but he still started all 16 games.

Panthers safety Eric Reid had a strong season in 2018 after signing late in September. This past year his performance was not quite up to the same level. Now we may have a better idea of why.

In a post he shared on his Twitter account, Reid claims he was hobbled by a sprained ankle and MCL the majority of the season. Reid says he’s not making excuses though and expects more from himself.

Reid was on the injury report at different times during the season but he still started all 16 games and posted career highs in sacks (four) and solo tackles (97) and tackles for a loss (seven).

Looking ahead, Reid has two years left on his contract so he’ll be around in 2020. It’s possible the Panthers will move him to linebacker to help compensate for the loss of Luke Kuechly. They’d need to find a new starting strong safety, though.

4 questions about the Panthers defense in 2020

Here are four questions they will need to answer before the 2020 campaign begins.

The Panthers are hard at work making new head coach Matt Rhule’s staff come in to shape. There’s no official word yet, but all signs point to Phil Snow following Rhule from Baylor and being named the team’s new defensive coordinator.

Whether it’s Snow or somebody else, the front office has some brutal decisions to make about the defense this offseason. Here are four questions they will need to answer before the 2020 campaign begins.

How old is too old for the defensive line?

On paper, the Panthers’ defensive line is their strongest unit. They finished second in the league in sacks this year (53) and have as many weapons up front as any NFL team. However, several key pieces are about to become free agents and most of them are past their prime. Mario Addison, Bruce Irvin and Gerald McCoy are all over 30 years old and need new contracts if Carolina is going to keep them around. Dontari Poe is also 29 and has a huge cap hit. The Panthers have to find the right balance between youth and experience while building for the future around guys like Brian Burns.

Eric Reid looking forward to playing spoiler in Saints-Panthers finale

Carolina Panthers safety Eric Reid grew up a fan of the New Orleans Saints, but he’s going to do his best to hurt their Super Bowl odds.

The New Orleans Saints are a game away from the playoffs, with a regular season finale on the road with the Carolina Panthers up next. Those Panthers will be led by none other than safety Eric Reid, a former All-American for the LSU Tigers and Baton Rouge, La. native. But the Saints won’t be receiving any help from the Panthers, if Reid has a say in it.

“They’re a divisional opponent. If we can take homefield advantage away from them, why not?,” Reid told The Athletic’s Joe Person. “I know my family in Louisiana wouldn’t be happy with me. I can be a Saints fan, but on Sunday, I’m a Saints opponent.”

Reid has played against the Saints six times in his NFL career, including three matchups since the Panthers signed him last season. He led the Panthers with 15 combined tackles (11 solo) against New Orleans in their meeting earlier this season, and figures to see plenty of action again in Sunday’s game.

While the Saints are guaranteed to finish no worse than third in the NFC playoff standings, they have a few paths to reaching a higher seed and earning a a first-round playoff bye, or even homefield advantage throughout the postseason. But it’ll be incredibly difficult for them to pull that off with a loss at Carolina this week. And Reid wants to do all he can to hurt his division rivals’ chances of bringing home another Super Bowl, even if the Saints fans in his family might hold it against him.

Watch: Panthers S Eric Reid talks about playing spoiler for Saints

Watch safety Eric Reid talk about potentially playing the spoiler this week.

Last year, the Panthers scored a consolation prize victory Week 17 against a Saints team that was resting its stars for the playoffs. This year, Carolina is carrying another long losing streak (currently seven games) into the last week of the season. Their chances of upsetting New Orleans are not good. The Saints opened as 12.5-point favorites despite playing on the road.

As daunting as that sounds, the Panthers were able to compete with their division rivals earlier this season, losing by three points in New Orleans thanks to some kicker issues. Watch safety Eric Reid talk about potentially playing the spoiler this week.

Reid hasn’t been bad exactly but he’s played an unexceptional season.

Like the rest of Carolina’s secondary he has made too many mistakes in coverage, allowing explosive plays. Reid posted a season-high 11 solo tackles Week 12 against the Saints and he has a career-high 118 total so far but that’s more a sign of the first two levels of the defense not making stops rather than Reid doing something special.

Reid still has two more years left on the contract extension he signed in February.

Panthers injury updates: WR D.J. Moore, S Eric Reid hurt vs. Colts

Panthers injury updates: WR D.J. Moore, S Eric Reid hurt vs. Colts

The Panthers are losing again and they’re also getting injured. Two players have already been hurt against the Colts.

First, wide receiver D.J. Moore has been on the sidelines since early in the game. It’s not clear when he took the hit, but Moore is currently in the locker room being evaluated for a concussion.

Also, safety Eric Reid appeared to suffer an ankle injury after he came down awkwardly biting on a fake throw by Jacoby Brissett. Cole Luke has taken his place next to Tre Boston in the defensive backfield.

The Colts lead 14-0 and the pain of this season will soon be over.

5 Panthers the Colts must game plan for in Week 16

These Panthers must be accounted for.

The Indianapolis Colts (6-8), after being eliminated from playoff contention, look to put one in the win column for the first time in four weeks. They host a Carolina Panthers (5-9) team that has also struggled greatly in the second half of the season.

Carolina fired their longtime head coach Ron Rivera a few weeks ago, which has had a negative effect on the team. The Panthers players have shown signs of just giving up and are playing with little to no life.

While Carolina is a depleted football team, they are still a talented roster that can compete with many teams in the league. With a few additions in the offseason and some time to get healthy, Carolina can be right back in contention.

With a chance to turn things around going into next season, here are five Panthers the Colts must gameplan for in order to pick up a win:

RB Christian McCaffrey

As one of the league’s most dynamic playmakers, McCaffrey is a matchup nightmare for defenses. A dual-threat pass catcher and quick running back, he is dangerous every single play and can touch the ball any time.

With 1,307 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground this year, McCaffrey has been in the MVP conversation in 2019. While also totaling 814 receiving yards and four touchdowns through the air, McCaffrey has a real chance to go over 1,000 yards receiving and rushing.

Stopping No. 22 will be priority No. 1 for the Colts defense that has struggled to stop the run in recent weeks. Matt Eberflus must make sure to have a spy on McCaffery all game, preferable Darius Leonard who has the speed to stay with him.

LB Luke Kuechly

As one of the best linebackers in the league for the past four seasons, Kuechly is still going strong with 131 tackles in 2019. This high number of total tackles leads the team and is fourth in the NFL.

Kuechly’s toughness and speed makes him a special talent and he can be a great run stopper. His coverage skills are somewhat underrated as well which makes him a serious threat to offensive production on Sunday. Kuechly will have to be picked up in blitz coverage as well which should be a real challenge for the interior of the offensive line and running backs.

WR D.J. Moore

As the Panthers number one receiver this season, Moore has really broken out of his first-year struggles. With 1,174 receiving yards and four touchdowns on the season, Moore ranks third among all receivers in yards caught.

Moore is a speedy wideout that has found his fit in this Carolina system. Paired with other speedster Curtis Samuel, they combine for a solid one-two punch. This receiving corps is undersized but filled with talent.

Expect Rock Ya-Sin to be on Moore all game, which should be a great matchup for the two young players.

S Eric Reid

Reid is one of the NFL’s most underrated strong safeties. He came to Carolina in 2018 and has had a productive two years. He is the cornerstone of their secondary and can fly all around the field.

With 113 total tackles, four sacks, and two fumble recoveries this season, Reid has been an issue for opposing teams. He plays very similarly to Tyrann Mathieu and loves to fly off the edge on blitzes.

The Colts running backs will have to pick him up in pass coverage and keep him contained if they want to have success throwing the football.

DE Mario Addison

Leading the team in sacks with 9.5, Addison has had a dominant season at defensive end. He also has 31 total tackles and two forced fumbles which shows he is good at getting after the quarterback.

Having a guy that can constantly provide pressure off the edge is so dangerous and the Colts offensive line will have their hands full Sunday. This will be a good test for Braden Smith and Mark Glowinski who struggled last week against New Orleans.

Panthers say safety Eric Reid is now questionable vs. Seahawks

According to the team, safety Eric Reid is now considered questionable for Sunday’s game due to an illness.

The Panthers may have to go without another key piece in tomorrow’s matchup with the Seahawks. According to the team, safety Eric Reid is now considered questionable for Sunday’s game due to an illness.

Reid has played every game for Carolina so far this season. He’s totaled a career high 106 combined tackles to go with six pass breakups.

While he’s done well defending the run, Reid has struggled in coverage at times. Heading into Week 15, Pro Football Focus has him graded out at 50.6, which is the lowest of any starter on defense.

The Panthers don’t have much safety depth to speak of, which is one of the reasons they should consider drafting one come April. If Reid can’t go, we may see special teams contributor Colin Jones stepping in to take a large portion of his snaps. Ross Cockrell can also fill in at safety.

In related news, Greg Olsen, Greg Little and Marquis Haynes have already been ruled out.
