Former Auburn safety set to join ACC program

Former Auburn defensive back Eric Reed Jr. has announced his transfer destination.

On Wednesday, former Auburn safety and Louisiana native Eric Reed Jr. announced that he was transferring to Georgia Tech via Twitter. The news comes just over a month after his name was entered into the transfer portal. It was the second time that Reed Jr. announced his intentions to transfer. However, he will now be transferring elsewhere as opposed to returning to Auburn like he did the first time.

Reed Jr. was a four-star coming out of high school according to 247Sports’ recruiting rankings. He was also regarded as the No. 18 safety in the 2020 class. With the Tigers having more depth in the secondary this season, Reed Jr. saw the writing on the wall.

In his time at Auburn, he only played in three games in two seasons. Now, he will join the Yellow Jackets who have put an emphasis on defensive backs via the transfer portal. Reed Jr. isn’t the first former Auburn defensive back to transfer to Georgia Tech. Former four-star and 2021 Tigers signee Ahmari Harvey also transferred to play for the Yellow Jackets. Two Notre Dame transfers KJ Wallace and Khari Gee also joined the program this season.

It certainly looks like Georgia Tech is trying its’ best to compete with other programs like Clemson, Miami, Florida State, and North Carolina. As for the Tigers, the loss of Reed Jr. doesn’t affect the program. Players like Caleb Wooden and Marquise Gilbert have filled in at safety and have appeared to be competing for playing time at the other safety spot aside Zion Puckett. Nevertheless, Reed Jr. is a good addition for head coach Geoff Collins and his staff.

Tigers defensive back Eric Reed Jr enters transfer portal for a second time

Auburn defensive back Eric Reed Jr has entered the transfer portal for a second time.

On Monday afternoon, Auburn defensive back [autotag]Eric Reed Jr[/autotag] announced that he was entering the transfer portal. The Louisiana native has appeared in just two games for the Tigers. Now, he will be looking to play elsewhere.

In January, Reed Jr. decided to enter the transfer portal. However, a few days later he decided to withdraw his name from the portal and stay at Auburn. The move isn’t that surprising considering that Auburn has a variety of different options on the back end. Players like [autotag]Donovan Kaufman[/autotag], [autotag]Marquise Gilbert[/autotag], [autotag]Nehemiah Pritchett[/autotag], and [autotag]D.J. James[/autotag] are just several of the corners that will have large roles on the Tigers’ defense this season.

In 2020, Reed Jr. played in just one game. In 2021, he played in just one game as well. I think it is safe to say that Reed Jr. saw the writing on the wall, so to speak. As a high school recruit, he was regarded as the No. 191 overall player and the No. 8 player in the state of Louisiana. After receiving over 10 offers, he decided to join the Tigers’ 2020 recruiting class.

Although he withdrew his name from the portal once, it is not likely that it happens again a second time. Like Reed Jr., many players at other schools wait until the spring to determine whether they will transfer or not. It allows them to see where the coaching staff has them as far as position and spot on the depth chart. It will certainly be interesting to see where the former four-star lands.

Eric Reed Jr. puts UGA in top-four, sets commitment time

The Georgia Bulldogs, Auburn Tigers, LSU Tigers and Notre Dame are in Eric Reed Jr.’s top schools. Reed will be making his commitment soon.

The Georgia Bulldogs are among the top four for Eric Reed Jr., who will be making his commitment soon. Reed Jr. has LSU, Auburn, Georgia, and Notre Dame in his top four schools.

Reed Jr. is four-star safety and plays high school at Calvary Baptist Academy. He is from Shreveport, Louisiana. He’s committing on the last day of the early signing period. I’d bet the SEC Championship Game will have a big impact on his decision. Georgia is currently considered the front-runner for Reed Jr.

He announced his top schools and his commitment time via Twitter:

Eric Reed Jr. is not to be confused current Carolina Panthers safety and former LSU Tigers safety Eric Reid. Reed may be the next great UGA safety. He may take the place of senior safety J.R. Reed, who is headed for the NFL after this season.

Junior safety Richard LeCounte may leave for the NFL as well, but his stock may drop after facing elite passing offenses to end the season. LeCounte must improve the angles he takes on certain plays, but has made numerous huge plays this season.
