Predicting the role for Steelers rookie LB Payton Wilson

We expect big things from Payton Wilson this season.

There’s a real possibility the Pittsburgh Steelers got one of the biggest steals of the entire 2024 NFL draft. The Steelers had two picks in the third round and after selecting wide receiver Roman Wilson with the first of those picks, they found themselves staring down the opportunity to select a guy many graded as a late-first or early second-round prospect in inside linebacker Payton Wilson.

Wilson fell in the draft due to some concerns about a knee injury. An injury that occurred while he was still in high school. Let that sink in a little. Teams were concerned about a six-year-old knee injury despite his amazing film from the last two seasons.

Thankfully the Steelers didn’t feel any trepidation in choosing the smart, athletic gamechanger and now they might just have their best inside linebacker since Ryan Shazier.

Pittsburgh signed Patrick Queen as a free agent from the Baltimore Ravens and he is sure to have a huge impact on the Steelers defense but a tandem of Queen and Wilson might be the most dynamic and athletic group in the league.

Prediction: We expect to see veteran Elandon Roberts get the nod as the starting inside linebacker next to Queen to start the season and the Steelers will bring Wilson along at a steady pace. But by midseason, look for Wilson to be getting the bulk of the reps with Queen and this will allow the Steelers to keep two inside linebackers on the field more down the stretch.

The ‘big unknown’ with Steelers ILB Cole Holcomb

The Steelers will need to make a financial decision soon about Cole Holcomb.

Last season, the Pittsburgh Steelers completely rebuilt their inside linebacker depth chart starting with Cole Holcomb and Elandon Roberts. The team also added Kwon Alexander later in the season and the three of them brought a new level of play to the position until the injuries started to pile up.

Now it is the 2024 offseason and Alexander is a free agent and Alexander is coming off of a big injury and due a significant payday. This is why Steelers beat writer Ray Fittipaldo called the situation with Holcomb the big unknown.

Holcomb is under contract. Alexander is a UFA. Omar Khan will address reporters at the combine a week from today so we might get an update on what they’re thinking at ILB. Holcomb declined to speak with reporters on locker cleanout day and Mike Tomlin offered very little about where he is in his rehab. So quite honestly, there is a big unknown there.

If the Steelers keep Holcomb, his cap hit for 2024 is $7.46 million. If the Steelers choose to release Holcomb as a post-June 1 cut would save the Steelers $6 million in cap space. If the Steelers release Holcomb, look for them to address the position early in free agency and possibly in the 2024 NFL draft as well.

Steelers, Bills have 8 former Dolphins wild-card matchup

Former Dolphins who will play in Steelers-Bills wild-card game.

The Miami Dolphins have been eliminated from the postseason following their 27-6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday night.

So, while Dolphins fans prepare for the offseason, there are a number of former Dolphins who are still playing for a Super Bowl championship that they can support.

On Monday, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills are set to battle in a wild-card matchup of their own, and there are eight former Dolphins on their rosters and practice squads.

Here’s a look at which players who once donned the aqua and orange will play in this one:

Steelers LB Elandon Roberts says he’s playing vs the Ravens

The Steelers should have Elandon Roberts back this week.

The Pittsburgh Steelers defense has been so beaten up this season. One position that really took a hit has been inside linebacker. But this Saturday the Steelers should have one regular starter back when they take on the Baltimore Ravens.

Elandon Roberts talked to the media on Thursday and he said he plans to play on Saturday. Roberts has been in and out of the lineup with multiple injuries this season. More recently, Roberts has been dealing with a pectoral injury.

With Roberts returning, it isn’t clear what the Steelers will do with Myles Jack. He’s been the team’s best inside linebacker the last two weeks and could get the nod over Mykal Walker next to Roberts as a starter.

Steelers vs. Ravens injury report: Minkah Fitzpatrick, Elandon Roberts return to practice

Minkah Fitzpatrick, Elandon Roberts returned to practice on Wednesday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers got some great news on the injury front as two key defenders, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and linebacker Elandon Roberts, returned to practice on Wednesday.

It was Fitzpatrick’s first practice since injuring his knee in Pittsburgh’s Week 15 loss to the Colts. Roberts missed Week 16 with a pectoral injury.

Here are the nine players who participated in the first practice of Ravens Week:

Steelers vs Ravens: Minkah Fitzpatrick and Elandon Roberts return to practice

Good news out of Steelers practice on the injury front on Wednesday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers got a double dose of good news on Wednesday when linebacker Elandon Roberts and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick returned to practice.

Pittsburgh has seriously missed these two defenders in the middle of the defense. Roberts has been out with a pectoral injury while Fitzpatrick has been dealing with a knee.

This week the Steelers face off against the Baltimore Ravens with a chance to secure a playoff spot with a win. So getting all hands on deck on defense, regardless of who is playing quarterback for the Ravens.

In Fitzpatrick’s absence, practice squad safety Eric Rowe has been in the starting lineup and played pretty well. The Steelers also moved cornerback Patrick Peterson to the other safety spot with Keanu Neal on IR.

Roberts was just the last of multiple injuries to starting inside linebackers. The Steelers brought back Myles Jack after he unretired and he’s been the team’s primary inside linebacker for the past two weeks.

Steelers vs Seahawks game status report: Kenny Pickett questionable, Elandon Roberts OUT

Here is the Steelers game status report for this week against the Seattle Seahawks.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a must-win game this week against the Seattle Seahawks. Unfortunately, the team is still beat up and will be heading into Seattle shorthanded. Here’s the Steelers game status report for this week.

Steelers LB Elandon Roberts OUT vs Seahawks

The Steelers will be without Elandon Roberts this week.

The hits keep on coming for the Pittsburgh Steelers and their inside linebackers. On Tuesday, head coach Mike Tomlin talked to the media and said inside linebacker Elandon Roberts is out with a pec injury for this week’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Roberts was the last man standing of the three starting inside linebackers Pittsburgh signed to help rebuild this unit. First, the Steelers lost Cole Holcomb for the year only to be followed a week later by Kwon Alexander.

Now, with Roberts out of commission, Pittsburgh must once again shuffle the depth chart. The top three linebackers at the Steelers disposal this week are Mark Robinson, Myles Jack and Blake Martinez. Tomlin noted at the press conference that Martinez would be available this week.

Steelers DC Teryl Austin on injuries at ILB: ‘Nobody gives a (expletive)’

The Steelers have had a tough string of luck at inside linebacker.

When the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the New England Patriots on Thursday, they could have at least one new starting inside linebacker. Pittsburgh has seen its depth chart decimated by injuries to Cole Holcomb, Kwon Alexander and now Elandon Roberts.

Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin clearly isn’t interested in any excuses and was sure to point out that no one else cares either.

“Nobody gives a (expletive),” Austin said.

Holcomb and Alexander went on IR after going down in back-to-back weeks. Roberts suffered a groin injury last week and thinks he will be listed as questionable. This means guys like Blake Martinez and Myles Jack could be in the mix to play straight from the practice squad. Pittsburgh has been plagued by communication issues in large part because of the revolving door of defensive play callers at inside linebacker.

Steelers vs : Patriots: Monday injury updates include Cam Heyward

The Steelers had multiple players out of practice on Monday.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin held his weekly press conference a day early as is usual when the team plays a Thursday night game. This week the Steelers have to try and get back on track after a huge letdown against the Arizona Cardinals last week. The Steelers will take on the New England Patriots who are having a down season as well but after last week we know we can take nothing for granted.

Tomlin gave some updates to the variety of injuries suffered last week and the news isn’t great. Here is the rundown of players who missed Monday’s practice with an injury designation.
