Report: Bills could get teams calling them about pass rushers at trade deadline

Report: #Bills could get teams calling them about pass rushers at the upcoming trade deadline:

The NFL is slowly inching toward the trade deadline. While the Buffalo Bills have started the 2021 season at 4-1 and are currently on fire, could they actually be sellers at the deadline instead?

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, there’s a chance that might hold true.

On Tuesday, Fowler reported on current trade buzz with the deadline on the horizon. One specific position group that was mentioned for the Bills was edge defender.

Following an offseason where the Bills added multiple pieces to their pass rush in an effort to improve it, the report calls the area a “surplus” for Buffalo. Because of that, teams might come calling and a few veterans were mentioned as potential trade pieces.

Here’s Fowler’s buzz on the Bills:

The Bills are expected to get calls on their deep defensive line. The team has used draft capital on promising edge players Greg Rousseau, AJ Epenesa and Boogie Basham in recent years, which could make their veterans attractive at the deadline.

Jerry Hughes is an interesting case because of his salary ($6.1 million), age (33) and production (0.5 sacks). Those aren’t very enticing numbers. But he has been solid, and Buffalo plays him a lot (54 snaps in the Week 5 win over Kansas City). Perhaps the Bills hold on to the experienced rusher for the late-season stretch.

Mario Addison, meanwhile, is owed $4.075 million this year. He has one sack and two quarterback hits through the season’s first month. Efe Obada is a cheaper rotational guy at $1 million.

If the Bills do end up being a seller, of sorts, at the deadline, the defensive line is a position to watch. It’s also an unsurprising one.

In the past, Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane has took a similar approach to improving the team’s offensive line. Add numerous pieces and may the best man win.

In such cases, those who lose in positions battles have been traded. In terms of O-linemen that were dealt, think Wyatt Teller and Russell Bodine.

Looking at Buffalo’s current defensive line and the report, Hughes seems like a very unlikely player that would be moved. Hughes is a team leader and still drums up QB pressures with the best of them.

If the Bills are truly looking toward the Super Bowl, why trade Hughes?

Addison could be a more likely option. In recent weeks, his snap totals have started to drop and against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 5, he played the fewest snaps amongst all defensive ends.

Even Basham, who previously was inactive on game days to start the season, played more than Addison against KC.

The latest report does not mention that the Bills could be interested in trading defensive tackles. However, that’s another area to consider.

In recent weeks including against the Chiefs, Harrison Phillips and Vernon Butler were healthy scratches.

Finally in the report, there is an update on Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz. It says if he’s traded, he probably won’t take a pay cut, and there is a brief mention:

As for where Ertz could go, league execs have long pegged Buffalo and Indianapolis as potential landing spots.

Considering the way Dawson Knox has played so far in 2021, this seems like a bit of a recycled take.

LOOK: #Bills ‘Efe Obada reps England during preseason opener:

Buffalo Bills defensive end Efe Obada had a solid debut with his new team. He did so repping his home country as well.

Prior to the preseason, the NFL announced an initiative for International Pathway Players. Obada is one player via England that made it to the league.

The NFL decided during the preseason that such players like Obada could put a flag decal of their home country on their helmet during the exhibition season.

Obada decided to do just that against the Lions.

Check it out below:

Along with Obada, Christian Wade will have the opportunity to do so. He did not against the Lions because the Bills running back did not play due to a shoulder injury.

10 things to know about new Bills DL Efe Obada

Things to know about new Buffalo Bills defensive lineman Efe Obada.

The Buffalo Bills recently signed their most interesting player in a long time.

Defensive lineman Efe Obada signed a one-year deal with the team last week. The 28-year-old is as unique off the field as he is on it, so you’ll want to get to know him.

With that, here are 10 things to know about the Bills’ new defender:

Bills remain in top-five team in NFL.com power rankings

Bills remain a top-five team in NFL.com power rankings after initial wave of free agency

The Buffalo Bills made several moves to help fill the minor holes on their roster over the first portion of the free agency period. Their decisions keep them among the league’s best, according to NFL.com. In their latest, post-free agency power rankings, the Bills stand in the No. 4 spot.

The Bills did a great job at keeping major pieces from the 2020 season in the fold for upcoming seasons, as Buffalo signed linebacker Matt Milano, guard Jon Felciano, and tackle Darryl Williams. General manager Brandon Beane restructured some contracts to create some more cap space for the squad. This allowed Beane to make some moves with respect to unrestricted free agents.

Here is the breakdown on Buffalo’s offseason so far:

The Bills have established themselves as a legitimate championship contender, so we liked the move to keep Matt Milano — a member of the team’s defensive core — on a long-term deal. On offense, Buffalo opted to let John Brown head to Vegas in favor of Emmanuel Sanders, an underrated talent who slots in nicely with Stefon Diggs and Cole Beasley to form a rock-solid wide receivers room. The signing of former No. 2 overall pick Mitch Trubisky represents an upgrade over Matt Barkley at backup QB. Of course, if Trubisky plays meaningful snaps in 2021, you’ll know something went terribly wrong.

Buffalo also added tight end Jacob Hollister to help bolter the tight end room and defensive end Efe Obada to compete as a pass rusher.

Buffalo’s core pieces remained intact moving forward. As long as the team can get a repeat performance out of their returning players and get a little extra out of the new faces on the squad, Buffalo will once again challenge for the AFC crown.

Efe Obada becomes latest former Panthers DL to sign with the Bills

The Bills are signing former Panthers defensive lineman Efe Obada to a one-year deal, per Jonathan Jones at CBS Sports.

The Bills are signing former Panthers defensive lineman Efe Obada to a one-year deal, per Jonathan Jones at CBS Sports.

Obada came to Carolina in 2018 via the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program, which he’s become the face of. Over the next three seasons, he played 42 games in Carolina, primarily in a backup role – only starting once.

He had a breakout 2020 season, though. With multiple injuries up front Obada earned a bigger role and took advantage of the increase in snaps. He went from 28% in 2019 up to 39% last year. He posted career highs in sacks (5.5), QB hits (15) and tackles for a loss (four) while lining up inside as well as on the edge.

Buffalo’s rising star general manager Brandon Beane has made a habit of signing former Carolina defensive linemen. At the moment both Mario Addison and Vernon Butler are on their roster. It’s almost surprising that they haven’t signed Kawann Short. Yet.

In any case, the Bills are getting a versatile young lineman and a grade-A human being. Obada shared a classy message of farewell for Carolina on social media a short time ago:

Losing Obada isn’t ideal for the Panthers’ defensive line, promising though it may be. However, the recent signings of Haason Reddick, Morgan Fox and Frankie Luvu should help.

Buffalo Bills sign DE Efe Obada

Efe Obada signs with Buffalo Bills.

The Buffalo Bills have signed an intriguing free agent who joined the NFL via the International Pathway Program. Defensive end Efe Obada agreed to terms.

The team announced that the soon to be 29-year-old signed a one-year deal on Wednesday.

Born in Nigeria, Obada moved to England and joined the British American Football Association National Leagues and played for the London Warriors in 2014. While a player from across the pond, Obada is a proven NFL talent.

Last season, Obada had a career-high 5.5 sacks for the Carolina Panthers. Overall, Obada had 18 total tackles, four for loss, and a forced fumble in 2020.

Despite playing for the Panthers, he did not join their roster until 2017. Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane had already left Carolina for their current roles in Buffalo.

However, Bills defensive line coach Eric Washington was with the Panthers through the 2019 season in that same role. He would have experience coaching Obada.

The Bills also have running back Christian Wade on their practice squad, a former rugby player turned running back who joined the Bills via the International Pathway Program.

Carolina Panthers add OL depth, but risk losing momentum for promising young DL

Let’s review what the team got up to on Monday during the first unofficial day of 2021 free agency.

Even after some slick salary cap moves, the Carolina Panthers plan to be “really targeted” in this year’s free agent market. Both general manager Scott Fitterer and head coach Matt Rhule used the phrase in last week’s press conferences. On day one of the NFL’s legal tampering period they certainly delivered on that promise.

While there’s still plenty of time and cap space remaining, for now the target appears to be about one thing: adding offensive line “depth” without spending much money. Let’s review what the team got up to on Monday during the first unofficial day of 2021 free agency.

Panthers DE Efe Obada opens up about playing through the pandemic in 2020

Panthers defensive end Efe Obada shared a post on Twitter today detailing some of his struggles playing through it.

The NFL finished its 2020 season last weekend despite some serious hurdles. At times, it didn’t look like we would make it through without major delays, cancellations and outbreaks of COVID-19. Truth is, living through the pandemic has been hard on everyone – even professional athletes. Panthers defensive end Efe Obada shared a video on Twitter today detailing some of his struggles playing through it.

Obada even admitted to thinking about quitting mid-season and going home to comfort his wife, who was sick. He followed up with another post, saying he’s grateful for coming through and that 2020 was his best season yet.

That it was.

Obada saw his defensive snap count increase dramatically (from 306 in 2019 to 415 in 2020) and took advantage of the opportunity. He finished the year with 5.5 sacks, 15 quarterback hits and 21 pressures, all career highs.

Most impressive was Obada’s versatility – he took to lining up inside as well as on the edge and proved capable at doing so. He’s a restricted free agent, so it’s a no-brainer for the Panthers to sign him for another year. Obada is an important piece for a defensive line rotation that’s growing.
