Notre Dame receiver named to Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List

Don’t mess with Texas.

They say everything is bigger in Texas, and that’s especially true when it comes to football. In fact, there’s a college football award that revolves entirely around players with some connection to the Lone Star State. And a Notre Dame receiver could win it this year.

Irish receiver [autotag]Jaden Greathouse[/autotag] has been named to the watch list for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award. To be eligible, a player must play on the offensive side of the ball and either was born in Texas or played football at a high school, junior college or university based in the state. The player must also share characteristics with the Hall of Fame running back the award is named for.

This award first was given out in 2013. So far, only quarterbacks and running backs have won it, and only one winner has played for a college team based north of the Mason-Dixon Line. Time for Greathouse to make some history.

Donovan Jackson makes the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose preseason watch list

Another Buckeye on a preseason watch list. #GoBucks

We’ve been keeping you in the know when it comes to Ohio State football players appearing on preseason college football award preseason watch lists, and so far, it’s been pretty hard to keep up with.

All told, 14 Buckeyes have been mentioned on all of the preseason watch lists that have been announced thus far through the last few weeks. The latest preseason watch list that was revealed on Thursday came by way of the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose award and OSU offensive lineman Donovan Jackson.

The award has been around since 2013 and goes annually to the “top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity.” It also must be a player that was born in the “Lone Star State.”

Jackson is widely considered the best offensive lineman for Ohio State this season and will anchor one of the guard spots. He came out of Bellaire, Texas, as a 5-star prosect and is entering his junior season for the Buckeyes. If he has the year everyone things, there’s a good chance that he leaves early for the NFL draft and becomes a very high draft pick in April.

And in case you are wondering, Ohio State does have a winner of the award in its history. Former running back J.K. Dobbins, who was out of La Grange, Texas, took home the honor in 2019.

Additionally, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.

Coming off the heels of being named to ESPN’s Top 100 list for 2023, Smith can add another accolade as he prepares for his fifth season in College Station. Smith also received Preseason All-SEC recognition with first-team all-purpose, second-team return specialist, and third-team wide receiver nods following the conclusion of SEC media days.

The graduate wideout is looking for a strong rebound in 2023 after injuries limited him to just four contests last season. Smith’s versatile skillset allows him to impact the offense in various positions and even special teams. This speaks to how heavily he will be leaned on once new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino unveils Texas A&M’s new-look offense in a matter of weeks.

In his four seasons with the Maroon and White, Smith has totaled 2,804 all-purpose yards and has caught a pass in 27 consecutive games dating back to his 2019 matchup versus LSU. Pair of Sooners wide receivers named to Earl Campbell Award watch list

Theo Wease and Marvin Mims named to the Earl Campbell Award watch list for 2022.

Texas high school football has produced some of the greatest college football players. One such player was Texas Longhorns’ legend, Earl Campbell. Campbell, a native of Tyler, Texas, rushed for 4,443 yards over four seasons with the Longhorns before a long and storied career in the NFL with the Houston Oilers and one season with New Orleans.

Named after the legendary runner, the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award is given to the former Texas high school player who embodies “integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity.”

Placed on the preseason watch list for the award are Oklahoma wide receivers Marvin Mims (Frisco) and Theo Wease (Allen).

Wease is returning from a foot injury that kept him out for much of the 2021 season. In 2020, he tied for the team lead in receptions with Marvin Mims.

Mims has led the Oklahoma Sooners in receiving yards each of the last two seasons, despite being underutilized for much of the second half of the season.

In a new offense, a fresh start’s arrived for both Wease and Mims with Jeff Lebby calling the plays.

Awarded since 2013, Oklahoma leads the nation with two recipients; Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray.

Garrett Wilson a finalist for the Earl Campbell Award

Do you think Wilson deserves to take this honor home? #GoBucks

Ohio State wide receiver, Garrett Wilson, was named a finalist for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Tuesday. The award is handed out annually to an FBS college football player judged to be the best from the state of Texas. It can be a player that played high school or college ball in Texas, or one that was born in the Lone Star state.

Though originally born in Ohio, Wilson moved to Texas at an early age and played for Lake Travis High School in Austin, Texas, before committing to play for the Buckeyes. He had one whale of a junior year in 2021, finishing with 1,058 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns on 70 receptions.

The other finalists for the award are UTSA running back Sincere McCormick, running back Abram Smith of Baylor, Kansas State running back Deuce Vaughn, and quarterback Bailey Zappe from Western Kentucky.

Ohio State has had two finalists for the award in years past, quarterback J.T. Barrett in 2017, and then J.K. Dobbins who took home the honor in 2019.

Oklahoma’s Kennedy Brooks named Earl Campbell Award semifinalist

Oklahoma redshirt junior running back Kennedy Brooks was named one of the semifinalists for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.

Oklahoma redshirt junior running back Kennedy Brooks was announced as one of the semifinalists for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.

Brooks has rushed 145 times for 857 rushing yards thus far this season with 10 rushing touchdowns. The Mansfield, Texas, native had a monster day in the Red River Showdown against the Texas.

Versus the Longhorns, Brooks rumbled for 217 yards on 25 carries with a pair of touchdowns. That included the 33-yard game-winning touchdown with three seconds remaining.

Brooks followed that performance up the following week with a 153 rushing yards performance against TCU.

Brooks already owns a pair of 1,000-yard rushing seasons in his Oklahoma career. In 2018, Brooks carried it 119 times for 1,056 yards with 12 rushing touchdowns. Then, in 2019, Brooks recorded 1,011 rushing yards on 155 totes.

Brooks needs 143 more rushing yards to become just the fourth Sooner in program history to ever record three 1,000-yard rushing seasons. He would join De’Mond Parker (1996-98), Adrian Peterson (2004-06) and Samaje Perine (2014-16) as the only Oklahoma running backs with that distinction.

The award is named after 1977 Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell and it recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football. In order to be eligible to receive the award, a player must have either been born in Texas, graduated from a Texas high school or have played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.

The fan vote for the semifinalists round is underway and fans can vote for Brooks once per day by visiting www.earlcampbellaward.com. Finalists are set to be announced on Dec. 14.

Oklahoma has been well represented for the award in recent memory. The Sooners have produced eight finalists since 2014: Samaje Perine in 2014, Dede Westbrook in 2016, Baker Mayfield each year from 2015-17, Kyler Murray in 2018 and Jalen Hurts and CeeDee Lamb in 2019.

Mayfield and Murray won the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award in back-to-back seasons in 2017 and 2018.

Brooks has his next chance to impress this Saturday as Oklahoma welcomes in Iowa State at 11 a.m. for a Big Noon Kickoff on FOX.

Two Longhorns named semifinalists for Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award

Bijan Robinson and Xavier Worthy named Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award semifinalists.

The Longhorns have not lived up to expectations this season, but sophomore running back Bijan Robinson and freshman wide receiver Xavier Worthy have been bright spots.

Robinson and Worthy’s seasons are not going unrecognized as they were named semifinalists for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award on Thursday.

On their website, the Earl Campbell Award explains their mission:

Six Notre Dame players earn spot on Senior Bowl Watch List

Who could be headed to Mobile after the season?

The Senior Bowl always is a big deal for players who have just finished their eligibility to play college football. It often serves as a major showcase for any player hoping to get drafted by the NFL only a few months later. While we obviously have no clue who will be going to the 2022 game at this point, it’s fun to look at the players who have a chance. This year’s Senior Bowl Watch List has been released, and six Notre Dame players are on it:

Oklahoma Sooners land Two on Earl Campbell Tyler Rose watch list

Two Sooners with Texas ties land on the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list.

The Oklahoma Sooners have announced wide receiver Marvin Mims and running back Kennedy Brooks have been named to the 2021 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list.

Despite the Sooners’ deep-seated rivalry with the Lone Star State, over 40 members of the Crimson and Cream have ties to Texas – an important qualification for Earl Campbell Tyler Rose consideration. Both Brooks and Mims rise above the rest, as they’re expected to build upon their already impressive resumes.

Mims led OU with 610 yards off 37 receptions in 2020. The 5-foot-11 receiver also made Big XII history as the first-ever freshman with nine touchdown receptions. A product of Frisco High School, Mims is forecasted to terrorize defenses from the slot in 2021.

Kennedy Brooks, who opted out of the 2020 campaign, will look to pick up where he left off in 2019 when he averaged 77 yards per game. In total, the Mansfield native has stockpiled 18 touchdowns and 2,067 rushing yards in his two seasons for the Sooners. Now, in a tandem with Eric Gray, Oklahoma expects to have as dynamic a backfield as anyone in the country.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award is presented annually to the nation’s most outstanding Division I offensive player who meets one or more of the following criteria: 1. Is born in Texas; 2. Graduated from a Texas high school; or 3. Played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.
