Seahawks losing Damien Lewis, Drew Lock, DeeJay Dallas to free agency

Let’s get caught up on some of the latest Seahawks free agent news from around the league.

Today has been much slower compared to yesterday, but let’s get caught up on some of the latest Seahawks free agent news from around the league.

Last night left guard Damien Lewis agreed to a massive four-year deal with the Panthers, worth a reported $53 million total.

A short time ago we also learned that running back DeeJay Dallas is also leaving. According to Jordan Schultz, he has agreed to terms with the Cardinals, but there are no details on how much as of yet.

Finally, just moments ago we received word that Drew Lock will also be leaving Seattle as a free agent. According to Adam Schefter at ESPN, Lock is getting a one-year, $5 million deal from the Giants.

None of these headlines should really come as a surprise, aside from the outlandish size of Damien Lewis’ deal with Carolina.

So far the Seahawks have been characteristically quiet in free agency. They have not signed any outside free agents as of yet and have only reported to be- re-signing tight end Noah Fant and defensive lineman Leaonrd Williams.

Giants are signing Drew Lock to a one-year deal

The New York Giants are signing QB Drew Lock to a one-year deal to replace Tyrod Taylor and backup Daniel Jones.

The New York Giants lost veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor to the New York Jets on Monday but wasted little time in replacing him.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the Giants are signing Drew Lock. The deal is for one year and worth up to $5 million.

The 27-year-old Lock was a second-round pick of the Denver Broncos in the 2019 NFL draft and spent the first three years of his career with the team. He was traded to the Seattle Seahawks in March of 2022 and spent the past two seasons backing up ex-Giant Geno Smith.

In 28 career games (23 starts), Lock has completed 59.7 percent of his passes for 5,283 yards, 28 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. He’s added 229 yards (3.9 ypc) and five touchdowns on the ground.

Lock will serve as a moderately-priced reserve in 2024 and compete with Tommy DeVito for the backup job to starter Daniel Jones.

Given that the Giants recently traded one of their two second-round picks and have now committed roughly $53.1 million in 2024 to the three quarterbacks on their roster, the odds of general manager Joe Schoen selecting a rookie QB in the early rounds of the 2024 NFL draft have diminished.

Report: Panthers could be landing spot for free-agent QB Drew Lock

Could Dave Canales’ Panthers be in the market for a new backup QB?

It’s already evident, even before the start of free agency, that head coach Dave Canales will help reconstruct the Carolina Panthers in his vision. And that vision could even include a new understudy to quarterback Bryce Young.

On Sunday morning, ESPN NFL insiders Jermey Fowler and Dan Graziano dropped off some last-minute intel ahead of the opening of this year’s negotiating window. The Panthers, of course, were linked to some potentially available wideouts—including Tee Higgins, Michael Pittman Jr., Calvin Ridley and Michael Gallup.

But they were also mentioned in the backup quarterback market, where Fowler wrote the following about Drew Lock:

. . . And watch for Lock in Carolina. He has strong ties to new coach Dave Canales.

Those “strong ties” emanated from their one year together with the Seattle Seahawks. Prior to joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as their offensive coordinator this past season, Canales served as Lock’s position coach out west in 2022.

So if the Panthers are indeed interested in Lock, then where would that leave current second-stringer Andy Dalton?

Dalton, who is easily one of the best backup options in the league, will be entering the second season of a two-year, $10 million pact in 2024. Well, that friendly deal could spark a trade, especially with so many quarterback-needy squads sniffing around for answers.

If a deal goes down and Dalton is designated as a pre-June 1 trade, Carolina—per Spotrac—could save approximately $1.1 million in salary cap space. They can also save some space with a post-June 1 release ($2 million) or a post-June 1 trade ($4 million).

Predicting where 10 Seahawks players will land in free agency

Here are our predictions for 10 Seahawks free agents and where they will end up signing.

Free agency is almost upon us. In less than three weeks the NFL’s legal tamperiod period window will open and teams can begin negotiating with agents who represent free agents. The Seahawks have several key players who are about to hit the market, including seven on Pro Football Focus’ list of the top 150 this year. Odds are they won’t be able to keep all of them and there are a few who they should allow to leave.

Let’s see if we can guess where they’re headed. Here are our predictions for 10 Seahawks free agents and where they will end up signing.

Ranking 2024’s top 12 free-agent quarterbacks

Here are the top 12 quarterbacks who are about to hit the open market

The Carolina Panthers certainly won’t be on the lookout for a quarterback this offseason—at least as far as their main roster is concerned. But let’s rank the ones who are about to hit the open market anyway.

Here are the top 12 free-agent quarterbacks of the 2024 offseason:

Mike Macdonald says Seahawks have talked to Geno Smith, Drew Lock

The first personnel decision the Seattle Seahawks have to make this offseason may also be their most difficult one.

The first personnel decision the Seattle Seahawks have to make this offseason may also be their most difficult one. Starting quarterback Geno Smith has performed well over the last two seasons and has a strong case to continue as QB1 going into the 2024 campaign. However, there are several good reasons to move on. If that’s the path they take, then the front office will have to move quick, because Smith’s contract has a bunch of guaranteed money that will hit the books on Friday.

Speaking on Monday with ESPN radio, Seattle’s new head coach Mike Macdonald said that the team has been speaking with Geno Smith as well as backup quarterback Drew Lock and acknowledged that the team has to make some decisions pretty soon.

Lock will become a free agent in a few weeks and might be worth keeping around as a quality backup option, no matter what the Seahawks decide to do with Smith.

There’s been no official reporting on what might happen over the next few days. However, the arrival of new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb might be an indicator that Seattle is leaning towards moving on without Geno. While it’s not radically different than the offense that Smith ran in his last year at West Virginia, the best option to run Grubb’s scheme is Washington QB Michael Penix Jr., who’s also 10 years younger than Smith.

4 scenarios for Geno Smith and the Seahawks with key date looming

Here are four scenarios to consider as the Seahawks approach a major deadline in regards to Geno Smith’s contract.

Geno Smith has done a splendid job leading the Seahawks offense these last two years. His contract is reasonable, his attitude is exactly what you would hope for from a QB1 and he’s easily the most qualified candidate to lead this team heading into the 2024 season. However, a lot of factors are working against his possible return.

For one thing, Smith lost his biggest supporter in the building after the team removed Pete Carroll as their head coach. Smith also has his relatively advanced age (he’s 33 years old now) and a very strong 2024 draft class at quarterback to contend with.

So, what should Seattle do with Smith? It’s a hot debate on Twitter right now with not a whole lot of nuance between the two camps – one of which that seems to believe Smith is an elite QB, and the other which is inexplicably desperate to see Drew Lock (or more accurately literally anyone but Smith) get a chance to start.

Let’s see if we can offer some better alternatives. Here are four scenarios to consider as the Seahawks approach a major deadline in regards to Smith’s contract – if he’s still on the roster one week from today he’ll get $12.7 million of his 2024 salary fully guaranteed.

All available free-agent QBs for the Colts in 2024

Here’s a quick look at the crop of free-agent QBs for the Colts in 2024.

For the first time in what seems like forever, the quarterback position is not the biggest need for the Indianapolis Colts entering the offseason.

With Anthony Richardson set to enter his second season after his rookie campaign was cut short due to a shoulder injury, there is no reason to look beyond him as the starter in 2024.

However, veteran Gardner Minshew is slated to be a free agent this offseason, and he could look for a starting gig after proving his worth replacing Richardson for most of 2023.

There’s almost an equal chance he re-signs or leaves so it’s difficult to know what that outcome will be at the time of this writing. But the Colts may need to look for an affordable backup to Richardson.

The purpose of this article is purely informative. It’s just a list of which quarterbacks are set to be unrestricted free agents, according to Over The Cap. We’ll get into who the Colts should target in free agency over the next month as the new league approaches in March.

A handful of the top options like Baker Mayfield and Kirk Cousins are included even though the Colts won’t be pursuing them.

So before the new league year arrives, here’s a look at all the available quarterback options for the Colts during the 2024 offseason:

10 pending free agents the Seahawks should allow to leave in 2024

To begin the overhaul, they’ll have to start by shedding some serious dead weight in the trenches.

We have many hopes for whoever comes in to replace Pete Carroll as the next Seattle Seahawks head coach. At the top of our list is a desire that he places a far greater priority on offensive line play than his predecessor ever did. Carroll has an unmatched eye for defensive back talent and a rare gift more motivating his players, but he always seemed to have a blind spot for the offensive line. The truth is this unit underperformed in practically every season during Carroll’s run as head coach – and it’s something that needs to change.

This offseason above all else we hope to see a genuine investment in this unit at a level that we never saw under Carroll. To begin the overhaul, they’ll have to start by shedding some serious dead weight in the trenches. Here are 10 pending free agents we believe Seattle should allow to walk.
