Jags activate 9 from practice squad before game vs. Patriots

With several Jags players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, they decided to activate nine practice squad players for Sunday’s game against the Pats, including veteran offensive lineman D.J. Fluker.

With several of their players being placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list dating back to last week, the Jacksonville Jaguars went through this week short-handed on players. For that reason, it was almost a certainty that they would have to activate several players from their practice squad despite getting a wave of players back from the list on Friday and Saturday.

They did that Saturday afternoon by activating nine practice squad players for their Week 17 game against the New England Patriots — and that list is as follows:

  • CB Lorenzo Burns
  • DT Doug Costin
  • WR Jeff Cotton Jr.
  • RB Nathan Cottrell
  • OL D.J. Fluker
  • DB Michael Jacquet
  • S Bradley McDougald
  • OL Badara Traore
  • OL Tre’Vour Wallace-Simms

The Jags’ offensive line in particular is the unit most seem to be concerned about as they will be without starters Cam Robinson, Brandon Linder, and Ben Bartch. Additionally, their third-string guard, Will Richardson, went on injured reserve this week, too.

Thankfully, the Jags have an experienced player in Tyler Shatley (31 career starts) to start in Linder’s place and second-round rookie left tackle Walker Little (one start and 110 offensive snaps) to play in Robinson’s place. However, it appears the team could be eyeing Tre’Vour Wallace-Simms (no career starts) and recent free-agent signing D.J. Fluker (96 career starts) to be their guards this week.

The other notables added from the practice squad who could see significant snaps on offense include receiver Jeff Cotton (replaces Jaydon Mickens) and running back Nathan Cottrell (because James Robinson and Carlos Hyde are on IR). Then on defense, defensive tackle Doug Costin (Dawuane Smoot and Jay Tufele on Reserve/COVID-19) could be that player on defense.

Jaguars release DT Doug Costin

The decision to release Costin bodes well for former first-round pick Taven Bryan’s roster chances.

With Tuesday being the NFL’s deadline to reduce roster sizes from 80 players to the final 53, Jacksonville will have to make some difficult decisions. One of those difficult decisions came in the form of releasing second-year defensive tackle Doug Costin.

An undrafted player out of Miami (OH), Costin played in 12 games and started nine at defensive tackle as a rookie. The Jags’ struggled as a whole up front, especially in run defense, but Costin was solid in those appearances. He totaled 32 tackles in 2020 with three going for a loss.

Costin hadn’t made a major impact in the preseason, totaling five tackles in three games, but he played well in the opener against Cleveland when he notched four of those tackles.

The decision to move on from Costin is good news for fellow defensive tackle Taven Bryan, who was considered to be in danger of being released during final cuts. The former first-round pick in 2018 hasn’t been very productive with the Jags and didn’t do much to help his case in the preseason,  but it’s hard to see him not making the team with the Jags cutting a player who was more productive than him last season.

Will the Steelers-Jaguars Week 11 game be on TV in your area?

The Jags and Steelers game will be widely televised on the east coast this Sunday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will get a crack at the league’s lone undefeated team in the Pittsburgh Steelers, who will travel to North Florida this Sunday. While both are no longer in the same division, the meeting will mark a rivalry game that has a bit of interesting history behind it.

The Jags will come into this game with the second-worst record in football (1-8), but despite that many Pittsburgh Steelers fans are on high alert. That anxiety is certainly justified when considering the Jags lead the all-time series by a narrow 14-12 margin. Additionally, the last two games between both teams were decided by margins of four (2018) and three (2017 playoffs).

This will be another 1:00 pm EST kickoff for the Jags. Per 506 Sports, those who live in the blue shaded areas will be able to see the game.

Calling the game this week will be Ian Eagle (play-by-play) and Charles Davis (color commentator) for Sunday’s game at TIAA Bank Field.

While Steelers fans may come into this one a bit nervous, the Jags will have an uphill battle on their hands. They will come into the game without several key players, including quarterback Gardner Minshew II. That will put sixth-round rookie Jake Luton in a situation where he will be up against the No. 6 ranked defense in just his third start.

The Jags also could be without starting cornerback Sidney Jones IV (Achilles), who was ruled questionable on the final injury report. If he can’t go, that would put the Jags in a situation where both of their top-2 corners would be out as C.J. Henderson was placed on injured reserve this week.

Jags Wire’s James Johnson and Mike Koll of 93.7 FM The Fan previewed the state of the Jags as they get ready for the Steelers Week 11.

The Jacksonville Jaguars and Pittsburgh Steelers may be on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to winning, but history says their matchup Week 11 could be a close one. In fact, their last two meetings have been decided by no more than four points.

To discuss the Jags’ outlook heading into Sunday, we joined 93.7 FM The Fan’s “Early Morning Show” to talk about a variety of key topics. Those topics included some concerns Pittsburgh should have when looking at the Jags, the emergence of James Robinson, some key Jags players on defense, plus more.

Jags DT Doug Costin clears concussion protocol

The Jags are on the way to getting one of their Week 9 standouts back in DT Doug Costin, who cleared the concussion protocol this week.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ interior defensive line has slowly been coming to life and their Week 9 game against the Houston Texans was one of their better showings. One of the players leading the way in that game was rookie defensive tackle Doug Costin, who was starting in his first game but garnered a Pro Football Focus score of 87.9 that week.

Unfortunately, his momentum was cut short that game because he exited with a concussion and was unable to play this past Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. The Jags had to then turn back to former first-round pick Taven Bryan, who had been starting up until Week 9.

However, Costin got some good news today as he was cleared from the Jags concussion protocol. As a result Doug Marrone revealed that he returned to the practice field Wednesday as a full participant.

“Doug has cleared concussion protocol so he’s back at practice, so he’s full [participation],” said Marrone Wednesday.

With Bryan struggling, the Jags turned to Costin because he flashed at training camp. He pranced on the opportunity, garnering two tackles and four pressures against the Texans.

“Doug [Costin] had a really good camp,” said Marrone Wednesday when asked about the rookie. “He played really well when we gave him a couple snaps and his productivity looked good, so we wanted to give him more snaps and the productivity went up.”

With Ben Roethlisberger and company coming into town, it will be key for the Jags to move him off his mark as he tries to hit Chase Claypool and JuJu Smith-Schuster down the field. Costin could play a huge role in disrupting those connections and has a grand opportunity to further establish himself come Sunday.

Jags release inactives list for Week 10 game vs. Packers

The Jags’ Week 10 list of inactives included no surprises as notable like Brandon Linder and Gardner Minshew were on it.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have released their inactives list for Week 10’s game against the Green Bay Packers, which included seven players. As expected, there were no surprises with many of the listed players being ruled out on Friday and Saturday (or prior).

Rookie Jake Luton will be getting the start in Gardner Minshew’s place for the second straight week as the second-year player continues to nurse a thumb injury.

Receiver Laviska Shenault Jr., linebacker Dakota Allen, running back Devine Ozigbo, and defensive tackle Doug Costin were also ruled OUT on the final injury report. Center Brandon Linder was downgraded from questionable to OUT on Saturday so he didn’t make the trip either. Starting in his place will be veteran Tyler Shatley.

The Jags added receiver Terry Godwin from practice squad with Shenault out to put them at five receivers. They also promoted linebacker Joe Giles-Harris to help their numbers within the linebacking corps with Allen being ruled out.

The list of Packers inactives can be found here.

Jags final Week 10 injury report: Shenault ruled out, Linder ruled questionable

The Jags will be without star rookie receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. for the first time this season as he’s dealing with a hamstring injury.

The Jacksonville Jaguars might be without several key contributors when they travel to Lambeau Field. We already reported the news that Week 9 starting defensive tackle Doug Costin (concussion) would be out and the final injury report revealed that star rookie receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. (hamstring) would be joining him.

The Jags also officially ruled out quarterback Gardner Minshew II (thumb), running back Devine Ozigbo (hamstring), and linebacker Dakota Allen (ankle), all of whom were expected to miss Sunday’s game against Green Bay after not practicing.

The Jags also ruled center Brandon Linder (back) and safety Josh Jones (chest) as questionable. If either or one can’t go the Jags would have to start Tyler Shatley in Linder’s place and possibly rookie Daniel Thomas in Jones’ place. The Jags could also start Andrew Wingard in Jones’ place, too, if he’s activated to the active roster off injured reserve.

With Costin out, the Jags will likely go back to the player who he replaced Week 9 as a starter in Taven Bryan. As for Shenault, the Jags will now have DJ Chark Jr., Chris Conley, Keelan Cole, and Collin Johnson as their top-4 receivers. If the Jags want to call up a player from the practice squad to give them a fifth receiver Trey Quinn, Terry Godwin, and rookie Josh Hammond are available.

Of course, starting in Minshew’s place for the second consecutive week will be rookie Jake Luton. He had a pretty respectable showing in his debut against the Houston Texans garnering a 68.4% completion rate (26-of-38) for 304 yards, a touchdown, and a pick.

Jaguars vs. Packers injury report for Thursday: Wingard upgraded to full participation

The Jags could be on their way to getting Andrew Wingard back, who is one of their best special teamers.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had a few changes to their injury report with the most notable occurring for tight end Tyler Eifert (neck) and safety Andrew Wingard (core muscle), who were both upgraded to full participation.

Center Brandon Linder (back), was also upgraded from non-participation on Wednesday to limited while receiver DJ Chark and left tackle Cam Robinson were added to the report for an illness (not COVID-19 related) and knee injury, respectively. However, it’s worth noting that the Jags put Robinson on the injury report late last week for the same reason, but he was still able to suit up against Houston.

Wingard’s name has been the most important to watch because all of the other aforementioned names are expected to play, while his situation is to be determined. After going on injured reserve before Week 6’s game against the Detroit Lions, he was designated to return yesterday, which means the Jags have 20 days to activate him. With him going from limited to full participation, it appears that may be in the Jags’ plans before they head up to Green Bay to battle the Packers.

PFF: NT DaVon Hamilton leads Jags with highest grade for second consecutive week

Davon Hamilton has been solid for the Jags these last two weeks and it’s reflected in his PFF grade.

After garnering the Jags’ highest individual Pro Football Focus grade against the Los Angeles Chargers Week 7 (86.6), rookie nose tackle DaVon Hamilton  continued his dominance Week 9 and led the way once again. According to the databases analysis, the rookie accumulated a grade of 87.9 this week against the Houston Texans. As a result, he also made PFF’s top-5 rookies list for Week 9 by Mike Renner.

Hamilton’s dominance over the last two weeks only adds to the contributions the 2020 draft class has provided the Jags when looking at names like Laviska Shenault, James Robinson, and Daniel Thomas (on special teams). His performances also should give Jags fans optimism about the future as the defensive line was a big concern heading into the regular season.

Hamilton wasn’t alone in terms of his dominance in the trenches, however, as Doug Costin (who got to start over Taven Bryan) earned an 87.9 grade figure. That actually didn’t come as a shock when looking at how he aided the team with pressuring Deshaun Watson and disrupting the run game.

If Hamilton continues to stand out, the Jags will have yet another young appealing piece to build around from their struggling defense like Myles Jack and Josh Allen. Costin also has the opportunity to prove he can be a vital part of the Jags’ defense and make the line a stronger group than they initially looked to be during the first half of the season.

Jags will look to undrafted rookie Doug Costin, Daniel Ekuale for ‘flexibility’ at DT

After Timmy Jernigan wasn’t able to get going, the Jags are hoping for a spark from Doug Costin and Daniel Ekuale at DT Week 4.

The Jacksonville Jaguars started the week off by making adjustments to the interior of their defensive line, parting ways with veteran Timmy Jernigan. With him no longer on the team, coach Doug Marrone expects undrafted rookie Doug Costin to get more reps while Daniel Ekuale was also promoted off the practice squad to help out, too. In return, the Jags are hoping for more versatility in the interior as they’ve struggled to be effective at the defensive tackle position.

The Jags signed Jernigan on Aug. 17 in hopes that he could provide a spark for the team in the interior. Unfortunately, he could never get going for them, garnering just one tackle in three games and 54 snaps. That led to him ultimately ending his Jags tenure with a Pro Football Focus grade of 44.1.

Costin was a player who impressed in training camp and he’s seemingly put together some good regular season practices together. After coming from the University of Miami (Ohio) as an undrafted rookie this April, Costin was one of four undrafted free-agents to make the Jags’ final roster and Sunday will mark his first snaps.

Ekuale, on the other hand, is a player who does have some regular season experience after making the Cleveland Browns’ final 53-man roster last season. He played in seven games and registered four tackles, one of which were for a loss.
