Giants work out Shelton Gibson, eight others

The New York Giants worked out wide receiver Shelton Gibson and eight others on Thursday.

The New York Giants hosted nine players for workouts in East Rutherford on Thursday, including former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Shelton Gibson.

The 5-foot-11, 191-pound Gibson was a fifth-round pick out of West Virginia in 2017 and spent the first two seasons of his career with the Eagles. He also had stays with the Cleveland Browns, Washington Football Team, Carolina Panthers and a second stint in Philly.

In 20 career games, Gibson has hauled in three receptions for 59 yards. He has also returned three kickoffs for 57 yards.

In addition to Gibson, the Giants also worked out wide receiver Kyran Moore, defensive end Ryan Bee, offensive tackle Dino Boyd, running back Jordan Chunn, tight end Matt Flanagan, defensive back Evan Foster, linebacker Cale Garrett and quarterback Jalen Morton.

The Giants likely evaluated these players with Reserve/Futures deals in mind should they be eliminated from the playoffs this weekend.

Note: Thursday represented the start of the COVID-19 for all players working out/trying out.

Jordan Lucas opts out, Bears activate John Jenkins off COVID reserve list

Safety Jordan Lucas becomes the second Bears player to opt out of the 2020 season following NT Eddie Goldman.

Chicago Bears safety Jordan Lucas has decided to opt-out of the 2020 NFL season due to health and safety concerns about COVID-19, the team announced Monday.

Lucas is now the second player for the Bears that will be sitting out this season. Nose tackle Eddie Goldman was the first player on the Bears roster to opt-out.

The Bears signed Lucas in March after spending two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. The 27-year old signed a one year contract worth $1 million.

This comes after the report from ESPN Dan Graziano saying the NFL and NFLPA are expected to extend the opt-out deadline to either Thursday or Friday. The NFL now has over 40 players opting out of the 2020 season.

The Bears have also activated defensive tackle John Jenkins and tight end Eric Saubert off the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Jenkins’ return to the active roster is good news for the Bears, who were left without a true nose tackle on their roster following Goldman’s opt-out and Jenkins being placed on the COVID-19 reserve list. He’s the in-house favorite to replace Goldman this season. Although the Bears could look elsewhere in free agency should they desire.

The Bears also waived offensive lineman Dino Boyd.

Bears 2020 training camp preview: Offensive line

The Bears return four of five starters on their offensive line heading into 2020. Let’s take a look at the unit heading into training camp.

The Chicago Bears will report to training camp on July 28 and one unit to keep an eye on is the offensive lineman. This offseason the Bears didn’t heavily invest into their offensive line that was ranked 29th in run blocking and 21st in pass protection.

The Bears also saw their long time offensive guard Kyle Long retire this offseason and looked into bottom tier free agents and late 2020 draft picks do fill some void and bring competition.

Let’s take a look at the offensive line heading into training camp.

Cody Whitehair

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

After switching from center to left guard before the start of the 2019 season, Whitehair saw himself playing center in the second half of the season. Entering his fifth year, Whitehair is confident that he’ll be playing center for the 2020 season, where he feels comfortable.

In 2018 Whitehair was very comfortable in playing center as he earned his only Pro Bowl selection so far through his career.
