Giants waive RB Jordan Chunn, TE Nate Wieting

The New York Giants have waived RB Jordan Chunn and TE Nate Wieting in order to make room for RB Corey Clement and WR/TE Kelvin Benjamin.

After inking both running back Corey Clement and wide-receiver-turned-tight-end Kelvin Benjamin following their tryouts with the team during rookie minicamp, the New York Giants have waived a pair of players to make room.

The two players getting the axe are running back Jordan Chunn and tight end Nate Wieting, both of whom signed reserve/futures contracts with the Giants back in January.

With Benjamin and Clement now in the fold, the Giants are stacked with competition at both positions. Of the two, Clement has an easier path to the 53-man roster, while Benjamin faces an uphill battle and both tight end and wide receiver.

Still, head coach Joe Judge seems impressed with what Benjamin brings to the table.

“He’s a big guy. He’s always been a big receiver. He’ll work receiver. He’s working a little bit flex tight end as well. I wouldn’t really kind of, you know, pin him down to any one position at this point. We’re going to use the weekend to move him around to different spots and see how it works out,” Judge said on Friday.

Both Chunn and Wieting will now be subject to waivers. It’s possible, albeit it unlikely, that they return to the Giants sometime in the future.

Giants work out Shelton Gibson, eight others

The New York Giants worked out wide receiver Shelton Gibson and eight others on Thursday.

The New York Giants hosted nine players for workouts in East Rutherford on Thursday, including former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Shelton Gibson.

The 5-foot-11, 191-pound Gibson was a fifth-round pick out of West Virginia in 2017 and spent the first two seasons of his career with the Eagles. He also had stays with the Cleveland Browns, Washington Football Team, Carolina Panthers and a second stint in Philly.

In 20 career games, Gibson has hauled in three receptions for 59 yards. He has also returned three kickoffs for 57 yards.

In addition to Gibson, the Giants also worked out wide receiver Kyran Moore, defensive end Ryan Bee, offensive tackle Dino Boyd, running back Jordan Chunn, tight end Matt Flanagan, defensive back Evan Foster, linebacker Cale Garrett and quarterback Jalen Morton.

The Giants likely evaluated these players with Reserve/Futures deals in mind should they be eliminated from the playoffs this weekend.

Note: Thursday represented the start of the COVID-19 for all players working out/trying out.

2020 Roster: Cowboys trim RB, DT positions ahead of Covid Deadline

The Cowboys have begin trimming their roster for training camp, releasing a RB and DT.

The Dallas Cowboys, like all 32 NFL franchises, have a new roster cutdown date added to their offseason calendar. After the last several seasons have had teams moving from the 90-man offseason roster to the 53-man regular season version following the final preseason game, Covid-19 has changed this as well as many other aspects of the roster composition.

Now, teams will need to be down to 80 players ahead of the start of training camp practices on August 17. The Cowboys have had 89 players on their roster for the last few months, and as discussed in our roster and practice squad projections, will need to release nine men to get down to the limit. On Tuesday they began the trimming by releasing two players who we identified would likely be in the first wave. RB Jordan Chunn and DT Garrett Marino have been let go, per Clarence Hill Jr of the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram.

Jordan Chunn

As explained in our projection, Chunn is a end-of-roster holdover from the previous regime. There will likely be several of these types of players who will be let go while Mike McCarthy and his staff bring in players they identify as being good fits for the new systems being implemented.

Chunn appeared in just one game in 2019, playing 16 special team snaps. The club signed two undrafted free agents at the position that will be given a chance to compete for the third RB role, if there is one, behind Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard. Our prediction has South Carolina’ Rico Dowdle as a the leading candidate to make the team, and Darius Anderson from TCU is another consideration.

Garrett Marino

As for Marino, when the rookie work was cancelled he lost his shot to impress a coaching staff at a position with a strong veteran presence. Dallas signed Dontari Poe and Gerald McCoy to start, and has Trysten Hill, Antwaun Woods and Tyrone Crawford to rotate in. The club also spent their third-round pick on Oklahoma stud Neville Gallimore. There was little chance Marino was going to make an impression as the coaching staff still has LaDarius Hamilton and Justin Hamilton in the seventh and eighth spots on the depth chart.
