It’s down to Michigan and Michigan State for one of the state’s top prospects in the 2022 class.

Four-star athlete Dillon Tatum has reportedly narrowed down the list of schools he’s considering to just two — Michigan and Michigan State. MLive is catching up with some of the top prospects in Michigan ahead of the 2021 season, and that included Tatum – who said the following about his recruitment:

“They really did the best with recruiting me and showed the most love. I really just said, ‘OK, I’ll just stick with both of the in-state schools.’ It was not like I wasn’t giving a chance to out-of-state schools, it’s was just some of the out-of-state schools weren’t coming after as much, especially when (Ron) Bellamy went to Michigan.”

Tatum added that it’s been down to the Wolverines and Spartans for the past few months, and that he is looking to make a decision before his senior season begins this fall.

Tatum is the No. 257 overall prospect and No. 13 athlete in 247Sports composite rankings for the 2022 class. He’s also listed as the No. 5 player from the state of Michigan.

Michigan is still believed to be the favorites to land Tatum, but it does appear that Michigan State is still in the running and it will be a close finish on this highly-touted prospect.

Five potential 2022 running back targets for Notre Dame

Who will be the second RB in Notre Dame’s 2022 class?

It was back to the drawing board for Notre Dame after they missed out on Pennsylvania running back Nicholas Singleton. It seemed like at one point the talented back was leaning towards the Irish but ultimately, the home state team won out.

With Texas back Jadarian Price already in the fold, Brian Kelly would love to add another prospect to make a pair. Here are five viable running back targets for the Irish.

Report: MSU, UM leaders for 4-star ATH Dillon Tatum with decision expected soon

It appears Michigan and Michigan State will once again be battling it out for one of the state’s top recruits — four-star Dillon Tatum.

[mm-video type=video id=01f3c17j9wh5xdpb0j6x playlist_id=01eqbz825g32p3akwt player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f3c17j9wh5xdpb0j6x/01f3c17j9wh5xdpb0j6x-94bc96c0600b72bfde06a5e50385bb0f.jpg]

It appears Michigan and Michigan State will once again be battling it out for one of the state’s top recruits — this time West Bloomfield four-star athlete Dillon Tatum.

Jared Purcell of MLive caught up with Tatum following a recent track meet, and Tatum indicated the Spartans and Wolverines are both at the top of his list.

“It’s going all over the place,” Tatum told Purcell of his recruitment. “But mainly Michigan and Michigan State, they’re recruiting me the hardest.”

Tatum additionally made note that both Michigan and Michigan State are the leading candidates to land a commitment from him. And it sounds like a decision could be coming soon.

In another post — this time from Sam Webb of 247Sports — Tatum said a commitment could be coming very soon. Tatum told Webb that he was close to pulling the trigger on his decision this week but the coaching staff switch up in Ann Arbor (Steve Clinkscale joining Michigan’s staff) made him hold off for now.

“This past Wednesday I wanted to actually drop my video, but (the Clinkscale) hire kind of slowed it down,” Tatum told Webb. “I want to actually talk to him and have that relationship built with him before I make a final decision.”

Tatum is ranked as the No. 255 prospect in the 2022 class, and No. 5 player in the state of Michigan, according to 247Sports composite rankings.

Tatum has always been considered a lean to Michigan — and the crystal ball predictions back that up — but it’s good to hear the Spartans are still in the conversation. It may be an uphill battle, but Michigan State could potentially land one of the state’s best prospects in the next few weeks.

Numerous MSU recruiting targets reportedly will attend Saturday’s Spring Game

Saturday not only will be a big day for the players on the field, but for the future of the Michigan State football program.

Saturday not only will be a big day for the players on the field, but for the future of the Michigan State football program.

Michigan State will hold its annual Spring Game on Saturday afternoon, and a number of top priority recruiting targets will reportedly be in attendance for the event. According to 247Sports, four-star prospects quarterback AJ Duffy, athlete Dillon Tatum, wide receiver Antonio Gates Jr., and athlete Jaden Mangham will be in attendance on Saturday.

Click in the tweet below to see the complete running list from 247Sports of the prospects expected to attend Saturday’s game.

It is still currently a recruiting dead period so that means the coaching staff won’t be able to meet with the recruits. But this is still a great opportunity for Michigan State to build some buzz around the program, and potentially play a role in landing a few of these top-tier prospects.

Michigan State’s Spring Game officially kicks off at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.

Michigan 2022 star athlete includes Notre Dame in final 4 schools

Happy birthday Darren Tatum!

It was a special day for Darren Tatum today. Not only was it his birthday, but his son, one of the best recruits in the nation, Dillon, named his final four schools he’s considering.

The five-foot-eleven-inch and 190-pound star names Michigan State, Michigan, Baylor and the Irish as his final four schools he’s considering.

This is going to be a difficult job for Brian Kelly and his staff to lure Tatum away from his home state, specifically the school in Ann Arbor. It seems like the Wolverines have recently made a much more concerned effort to keep the best players heading to their campus.

If Kelly is able to get Tatum to sign with the Irish, it would be a massive recruiting win. Hopefully that happens.

In-state 2022 Michigan target releases top four

Michigan football makes the final cut for one of its coveted in-state targets in 2022.

For 2022 West Bloomfield (MI) four-star athlete Dillon Tatum, Michigan holds a lot of intrigue.

Not only has he been courted by the Wolverines for some time, but his head coach for three years, Ron Bellamy, is now the safeties coach in Ann Arbor — which just so happens to be the position that Michigan is courting Tatum. The Wolverines made the cut for him back on Jan. 1, so when he was set to pare down his list, it was a seeming inevitability that the maize and blue would make the cut once again.

That was the case, with Tatum having cut his list down to just four, with Michigan, Michigan State, Baylor and Notre Dame being his finalists.

Michigan appears to be the team to beat for Tatum, but MSU has been making an extra special effort in trying to lure him to East Lansing. Back in January, Tatum told WolverinesWire that there was no school pushing harder for his services. However, since then, with the hire of Bellamy, it’s all but assured that the maize and blue will remain in contention until he makes his verbal commitment.

There are eight 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions in for Tatum at the moment, with all eight indicating he’ll likely become a Wolverine.

Michigan State cracks final four for 4-star ATH Dillon Tatum of West Bloomfield

MSU is joined by Michigan, Notre Dame and Baylor, with Wisconsin, Ohio State, Georgia, USC, and Penn State falling out of contention.

Michigan State is one of the finalists to land arguably the state’s top prospect for the class of 2022.

Dillon Tatum, a four-star athlete from West Bloomfield, narrowed down his list of schools he’s considering to four on Sunday and the Spartans made the list. Michigan State is joined by Michigan, Notre Dame and Baylor, with Wisconsin, Ohio State, Georgia, USC, Nebraska and Penn State falling out of contention for this top prospect.

Tatum is listed by 247Sports as the No. 5 prospect in Michigan for the class of 2022, and No. 269 overall in the country. He’s also ranked as the No. 16 athlete (ATH) nationally.

Being in contention for such a highly-touted recruit like Tatum is great to see for the Spartans. However, it may be hard for Michigan State to beat out in-state rivals Michigan for this heralded recruit. Tatum currently is projected to end up in Ann Arbor and his former high school coach — Ron Bellamy — joined the Wolverines’ coaching staff this offseason as an assistant coach. This of course doesn’t guarantee he’ll choose Michigan over Michigan State so still being in consideration is great to see for the Spartans.

In-state 4-star being pursued heavily by Michigan rival

Which one of Michigan football’s chief rivals is pushing Dillon Tatum to commit and why he thinks one of his former teammates is NFL-bound.

[jwplayer nuuBWgOG-XNcErKyb]

WIXOM, Mich. — Knee-deep into a potential state championship run, 2022 West Bloomfield (Michigan) four-star athlete Dillon Tatum has his mind more on what his team is doing than where he’ll end up in a year or so.

Tatum plays both sides of the ball and is an impact player on either side, whether it’s at running back or in the defensive backfield. You could see it in practice ahead of the Lakers’ win over the vaunted Belleville Tigers last week.

Since the 2022 class went on the clock, Tatum has generated more national interest: 32 reported offers. The latest two were from Georgia and Utah — both solid programs, to say the least.

On Jan. 1, Tatum put out a top 10 of Michigan, MSU, Ohio State, USC, Georgia, Penn State, Nebraska, Baylor, Wisconsin and Notre Dame. For the moment, all is quiet, but he figures when his team finishes its season he’ll hear a lot more from schools across the country.

“Just a little bit more,” Tatum said. “Really just zoning in on that top 10 that I put out. I don’t know if there’s gonna be any more offers after that one. It’s really based on how the season ends, what happens in the state championship. I feel like more schools will start picking me up after we win.”

The in-state product has long been high on Michigan, but there’s another suitor in town that’s making a much stronger push at the moment, and it’s a program the Wolverines can ill-afford to lose him to.

“Right now, I’d say Michigan State. That’s probably the hardest right now,” Tatum said. “Mel Tucker really wants me to commit, be one of the first four-star athletes to commit to the school, bring more attention to school. But I talk to coach Peagler, the running backs coach, a little more than anyone.”

Of course, he’s still hearing from Michigan, but as of Jan. 18 — when WolverinesWire spoke to Tatum — the coaching staff started churning a bit. His primary contact, Mike Zordich, was replaced later in the week by former Dallas Cowboys defensive backs coach Maurice Linguist. He’ll also have a new ally in Ann Arbor with his head coach, Ron Bellamy, headed to Ann Arbor to coach on the offensive side of the ball.

Tatum is looking most forward getting to know new Michigan defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald, another new hire for the maize and blue.

“Yeah, I am (hearing from Michigan), just not as hard as Michigan State,” “But I hear from (former) coach Zordich, the DB coach, and now they just hired their new coach, Macdonald. So we’ll see if he hits me up, get in good with him and get to know him.”

Michigan also has another new hire on the other side of the ball that could potentially be Tatum’s position coach, depending on where he decides to play. And the good news is, Tatum already has a relationship with him.

The maize and blue brought back the team’s all-time leading rusher in Mike Hart to coach the running backs, and Tatum is excited to see what he does with one of his former teammates in Donovan Edwards.

“I think he’s a great coach,” Tatum said. “I met him at my school before all the shutdown happened. I think Donovan and him are gonna be pretty good together, and I think he’s gonna learn a lot from Coach Hart. So if I go there as a running back, I’m gonna learn a lot from him, too.”

Of course, with Edwards still on the West Bloomfield team but also an early-enrollee at Michigan, Tatum’s backfield teammate has a little pull in potentially driving him to Ann Arbor. But he’s also not the only one.

Makari Paige and Cornell Wheeler also played with the soon-to-be high school senior, and it certainly makes Tatum pause knowing how many of his teammates are ending up at Michigan. And that’s not even mentioning his head coach Ron Bellamy, the former Wolverines receiver.

“It has a little bit of pull,” Tatum said. “My coach went there. They’re a great school. They’re a great program, they want to win – I like that about schools. They’re not just putting their guys out there just to lose or do anything at all. You want to have the will to win. I feel like they’re gonna have a great team next year. They were pretty young this year, I believe. Just see how it goes.”

His recruitment aside, Tatum was excited to see Paige get early playing time in his first year with the program. In six games, Paige played 125 snaps and logged 6 tackles in the process.

Perhaps Tatum is a bit biased as it’s his former teammate, but the way he sees it, Paige is destined to be a high-level player — not just at the college-level, but in the NFL, too.

“He’s a great player,” “If he keeps going at the rate he’s going, get bigger, he’s gonna be great. He’s gonna be a top-10 draft pick, to be honest with you – with his size and his athleticism, he’s gonna be really good. I feel like they made the right decision of playing the freshmen like him. He still has some work to do, but he’s a great player.”

Notre Dame Recruiting update plus 2022 offensive wishlist

An update of the latest Notre Dame football recruiting news along with a 2022 offensive wish list.

The Notre Dame 2021 class is pretty much all wrapped up. With 26 players who have signed their letter of intent, Brian Kelly’s class has been pretty much maxed out. Louisiana’s Logan Diggs remains committed, but reading the tea leaves and the class having over the allotted 25 players, it’s doubtful that the running back ends up signing with the Irish on the second signing day, February 3rd.

So the focus has been turned to the 2022 class, which has 4 current commits (offensive linemen Joey Tanona and Ty Chan, safety Nolan Ziegler and tight end Jack Nickel). Let’s take a look at the most recent news on that class along with my personal wishlist of offensive prospects in that class. Next week, I’ll bring you my defensive wish list.

Wisconsin makes the top 10 for 2022 four-star athlete

The Wisconsin Badger football program received good recruiting news Friday as 2022 four-star athlete Dillon Tatum included it in his top 10.

With the 2021 recruiting cycle nearing its end and Wisconsin’s program-best class signed, the focus turns to the class of 2022 as the Badger football program looks to carry its momentum and continue to rise in the national rankings.

The program received good news Friday on that front as it made the top 10 for class of 2022 four-star athlete Dillon Tatum.

Tatum is ranked as the No. 246 player in the class of 2022, the No. 12 athlete and the No. 5 recruit from his home state of Michigan.

247Sports has not made any crystal ball projections quite yet, though the site notes Michigan and Michigan State are the current top choices.

Wisconsin is without a player in its class of 2022 after four-star safety/linebacker Braelon Allen reclassified and joined the 2021 group.
