Don Brown breaks down the Alabama offense

The various challenges the Wolverines will have to face in the Crimson Tide offensive attack come Jan. 1.

ORLANDO, Fla. — In most any other year, if Michigan was to take on Alabama, the biggest challenge would be for the offense going up against a stout defense. This year, however — reverse that.

While the Crimson Tide defense is still among college football’s best, it’s the offense that’s made all the headlines. However, despite the numbers remaining the same in late November, it hasn’t quite been the same with star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and his injury sidelining him for the season.

Enter Mac Jones, who still managed to pulverize Arkansas and Western Carolina while having his best game in a loss to Auburn to close out the regular season.

Had Michigan been in a situation where it had to face Tagovailoa, this game would likely be no contest, but with the unproven Jones, the betting line has held steady at 6.5 favoring Alabama.

However, with Jones at the helm, Wolverines defensive coordinator Don Brown sees little difference in the attack.

“To be quite honest, I don’t think they’ve changed all that much,” Brown said. “I think they’ve stayed systemically right on track to where they want to be. He does a great job of getting the ball out quick, which is obviously a trait for their offensive football team, as they want to get it out quick. So, you know, I don’t know if he’s changed all that much, but he’s certainly been efficient and has certainly kept them playing at an elite level, for sure.”

Part of the reason why Alabama has been so consistent despite Tagovailoa’s injury is the man they have in the backfield — a name that’s quite familiar to Michigan fans who were eager to see him in a winged helmet: running back Najee Harris.

Naturally, as the maize and blue were the other finalist for Harris, Brown has personal familiarity with the star tailback. But as he was among the group trying to woo him to Ann Arbor, he was never preparing to face him, as much as he was attempting to land him.

Now that he’s in his third year in Tuscaloosa, Harris has developed into a stealthy, crafty, all-purpose back, one that can hurt you in many ways. Brown described the challenge of facing Harris on Sunday.

“He’s probably the best jump cut guy I’ve seen,” Brown said. “You know, in meeting him, when he was a senior in high school, to see his development physically, he’s certainly taken his physicality to a different level. But the thing that I’m most impressed with is his ability to change direction and jump cut and be in the strong side A gap, end up in the backside B gap, or vice versa. So a good back, a guy that we’re going to have to tackle, for sure. You’re not going to be able to one‑arm, whip him down on the ground. He’s not one of those type of guys. He’s kind of a throwback because of his size and strength.”

That covers just one part of the Alabama attack. Perhaps the one most Michigan fans find to be most daunting, however, is the explosive group of wide receivers, perhaps the best collection of pass catchers in the country.

While Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs are the big names, especially considering both are considered first-round NFL talent in the upcoming 2020 draft, there are others that are equally, if not more, daunting. Junior DeVonta Smith leads the group with 1,200 yards, 18.46 yards-per-catch and 13 touchdowns — just 186 yards shy, but with 5 more touchdowns than Michigan’s leading duo, Ronnie Bell and Nico Collins, have combined.

Brown shared what makes the group so formidable, but it’s not a challenge he’s shying away from.

“Oh, they’re pretty good now,” Brown said. “They’ve got a nice group. You know, it sounds like DeVonta Smith is back at practice, so that just enhances their ability to get down the field. Jerry Jeudy, obviously, Biletnikoff winner a year ago. Ruggs, Waddle and Metchie, with some of the injuries that they’ve dealt with, has made a name for himself as a young guy as well.

“So we understand the challenge that’s in front of us. We’re confident in our ability, you know. You know, you’re not going to beat them one way. You’re going to have to play a number of different coverages. And, you know, we’re confident in our ability to do that.”

Given the firepower of said group, where does it rank in terms of wide receiver units that Brown has ever faced?

He won’t say it’s the top overall, but it’s quite close.

“Boy, I’m going to have to say top three to five,” Brown said. “One year at BC, we had Sammy Watkins and company when we faced Clemson. And, you know, I would think this group might have some similar traits. But the bottom line is, when you have four of them, that makes it a significant challenge because you’ve got to be strong at all your defensive back positions and, you know, your linebacker’s got to be in sync in the coverages that we’ll utilize. So this is probably the deepest group across the board. But, you know, [we’ve] seen individual talent like these guys in the past.”

The challenge of stopping, stalling or otherwise vs. the Alabama offense comes on Jan. 1 at 1PM EST, as Michigan will face the Crimson Tide in the VRBO Citrus Bowl in Orlano.

Colts grab potential future QB in latest Draft Wire mock

Check out this mock draft from Draft Wire.

Even with two games remaining for the Indianapolis Colts (6-8), there are many already looking forward to the offseason and specifically the 2020 NFL Draft.

With four picks in the first three rounds right now, the Colts have a chance to add some solid talent to the roster. Which direction they go remains to be seen but there is a hope that a new quarterback could be brought in as the potential future.

In Draft Wire’s most recent mock draft following Week 15, the Colts got just that. Here’s a look at the Colts’ selections in the mock:

14. DT Javon Kinlaw, South Carolina

35. QB Jordan Love, Utah State — from WAS

45. WR DeVonta Smith, Alabama

79. CB Deommodore Lenoir, Oregon

Kinlaw is one of the most popular picks for the Colts. Currently at a mid-round value, he has been one of the players being mocked to the Colts so far.

Love would be the exciting draft pick, though. With the struggles of Jacoby Brissett, there is an increasing need to find a future quarterback. Whether the Colts see it that way remains to be seen.

Still, Love has a high ceiling as a quarterback and one that could find success under Frank Reich. He has all of the tools that make him a high-ceiling prospect and one the Colts should target in the draft.

The Alabama wide receiver in Smith is having a strong breakout season. In 12 games, he has 65 receptions for 1200 yards and 13 touchdowns. He’s averaging 18.5 yards per catch.

The draft is still months away and the offseason isn’t even here yet, but this would be a solid start to the incoming rookie class.

Alabama football: Top Crimson Tide photos from 2019 season

Here are some of the top photos from Alabama’s 2019 season.

Alabama’s season has not quite lived up to the expectations many had predicted heading into 2019. The Crimson Tide dropped two games in the month of November to two rivals, but there were still a lot of memorable moments.

Below are some of the top photos from the 2019 regular season, which includes several of the team’s playmakers such as Tua Tagovailoa, Najee Harris, Jerry Jeudy and more!

Should DeVonta Smith enter the 2020 NFL Draft?

Players that have completed their junior season at Alabama have a big decision to make: to enter the NFL Draft or stay for their Senior season?

Head coach Nick Saban has made his mantra very clear, if you are not projected to be selected in the first round, and you don’t have to leave the university, don’t.

Junior wide receiver DeVonta Smith is now faced with a decision that could define his career.

Throughout Smith’s time at Alabama, he’s been the least flashy of this elite receiving corps, with the exception of his role in ‘2nd and 26’, but that might just be because his stats do the talking for him.

Smith absolutely exploded onto the scene in 2019, accumulating 65 receptions for exactly 1,200 yards and 13 touchdowns – he leads the team in receiving yards and touchdowns.

He has also cemented his name in Alabama football history during the Crimson Tide’s game against Ole Miss in 2019 where he reeled in five receiving touchdowns.

After having a season like that you may be thinking to yourself, “Why in the world would he NOT declare for the 2020 NFL Draft?”

Well, there are a few strong reasons as to why it might be better for him to stay for his Senior season.

First of all, Smith is not currently projected to be selected during the first round in most analyst’s mock drafts. This may not seem too important, as players drafted outside of the first round commonly find success, but Saban’s mantra would call for him to stay.

Prior to his “break-out” Junior year, Smith hadn’t really put up notable stats. In his Sophomore season, he had 42 receptions for 693 yards and three touchdowns – good numbers, not great.

Wide receivers aren’t like quarterbacks in this aspect. A college quarterback can usually sell NFL teams on a single seasons performance.

Receivers are expected to prove their worth over time, consistency is key when it comes to skill positions If he can reel in over 1,200 yards this year, why not do it again, or even raise the bar, in 2020 to show he’s the consistent play-maker they are looking for?

It would be a safe bet to assume he will surpass his yardage total from 2019 in the 2020 season since his fellow wide receivers Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs likely leaving for the NFL.

Two fewer elite receivers to compete with for targets.

With Jeudy and Ruggs potentially gone, Smith can act as the No. 1 or 2 receiver on the team, along with Jaylen Waddle.

This is likely a major factor as to why he’s not considered first-round talent yet by draft analysts.

Throughout his career at Alabama, he has played with some top-talent that has grabbed the spotlight’s attention. Next season could be his year to be listed as the top receiver on the Crimson Tide.

However, the rise on the depth chart comes with a test: he will now be the priority for opposing secondaries. The double coverage could reduce his targets, receptions and yardage if he does not play like the top receiver on the field.

The way he plays when in that position will heavily influence NFL teams and draft analysts which could result in Smith rising up the rankings, big boards and mock drafts.

Moving into the first round of the draft comes with more money, so Smith will have to think hard about what is in his best interest.

As of now, it appears as if he’s looking to stay at Alabama for one more year, according to Chris Breece of CBS 42.

As Breece mentioned in his tweet, there is plenty of time left for Smith to make his decision. Stay updated here on Roll Tide Wire as we’ll bring you all the updates on Alabama players’ NFL Draft decisions!

Who did Colts select in Draft Wire’s latest 3-round mock draft?

A look at the Colts’ crop in the latest mock draft.

The Indianapolis Colts (6-70 are facing official elimination from the playoffs when they travel south to take on the New Orleans Saints (10-3) in a primetime matchup Monday night.

With the Colts’ season all but over, much of the focus has been shifted to who they might select in the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft. While that is still a long way away, it will soon become the dominating topic of discussion.

Here is who the Colts took in Draft Wire’s latest three-round mock draft:

15. DT Javon Kinlaw, South Carolina

36. WR DeVonta Smith, Alabama

46. S Xavier McKinney, Alabama

77. CB Cameron Dantzler, Mississippi State

What the Colts will actually do in the draft is impossible to tell. Even in the week leading up to the draft, it will be immensely difficult to figure out what direction they go in.

Many are vying for a quarterback in this year’s class. With the struggles of Jacoby Brissett and the questions that have risen with him as a franchise quarterback, there are many hoping that general manager Chris Ballard pulls the trigger if the opportunity presents itself.

If they don’t, though, there are other positions that need help as well. The Colts must add impact players to the interior defensive line. They must also add more depth to the wide receiver position.

Free agency will dictate much of what the Colts do in the draft, but there are plenty of options that could help them when April rolls around.

Tagovailoa, Smith, Ruggs III, are reported to return next season

According to Sports Illustrated’s Christopher Walsh, there’s actually quite a few Alabama players who could be returning next season.

There has been much speculation regarding Alabama star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and whether or not he’ll declare for the NFL Draft, or decide to return to Alabama for his senior year.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Christopher Walsh, there’s actually quite a few Alabama players who could be returning next season.

According to the report,  Tua Tagovailoa,  DeVonta Smith, Henry Ruggs III, offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood, and linebacker Dylan Moses are among the names with a high potential to return next season.

Roll Tide Wire will keep you up to date on the decisions each of these young men make.

Smith, who has become one of the Tide’s biggest weapons on offense, has over 1,000 receiving yards and 11 TDs so far this season.

Two Alabama players have won the Walter Camp Award with Derrick Henry in 2015, and Tua Tagovailao winning the award last year in 2018.

Five finalists will be announced on Dec. 5, and the winner will be selected on Dec. 12.

Many who watch Alabama football casually know about Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs, who will most likely be first-round picks in the 2020 NFL Draft.

However, fellow Junior wide receiver, Devonta Smith, has thrown his name into the hat to be a potential late first-round pick in the upcoming draft.

Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports has Smith listed as one of his top receivers to watch leading up to the draft.

“He’s a spindly athlete but has refined ability to beat press at the line, is smooth building speed down the field and has impeccable ball-tracking skills,” says Trapasso.

After spending his Sophomore season being known as the freshman that caught the game-winning touchdown pass on “second and twenty-six,” Smith has made his presence known in this crowded Alabama receiving corps.

With only a few games left in the 2019 college football regular season, Smith has amassed a solid amount of stats.

Off of 56 receptions, Smith has 1,026 yards, 11 touchdowns and averages just over 18 yards per catch.

These are very solid numbers for any receiver in college football, but because he has to share time with 2018’s Biletnikoff winner, Jeudy, and known speedster, Ruggs, he may be overlooked.

There’s no telling exactly where he will end up, but if the right team gets him they will be able to unleash his full potential and see what he can really do once given the opportunity to be “the receiver” on a given team.

Teams will have to do a little digging on this Alabama offense in order or unearth a potential gold mine in Smith. Once that happens, he may just be taken in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

2020 NFL mock draft: Eagles land a CB, WR from the SEC in updated 3-round projections

Eagles land a CB, WR from the SEC in updated 3-round projections

With the NFL season halfway completed and playoff positions starting to fall into place, the time has started for the mock draft season in advance of the 2020 NFL Draft. If the season ended today, the Eagles will at No. 15 in the first round.

In the latest updated 3-round mock from Draft Wire, the Eagles landed three big-named prospects, two from the South Eastern Conference.

15. Philadelphia Eagles | Kristian Fulton | CB | LSU
Injuries continue to limit a secondary with tons of youth and potential, and the Eagles should continue to stock their cupboard with talented corners. Fulton is a big, physical cover man who could give them an immediate upgrade.

50. Philadelphia Eagles | DeVonta Smith | WR | Alabama

Smith, a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award, has 1,026 yards and 11 TDs.

81. Philadelphia Eagles | Brandon Jones | S | Texas

Philadelphia has issues at both cornerback and wide receiver over the past two seasons. Fulton and Smith would immediately make the Eagles more athletic at the skill positions, while Jones would start the transition at safety from Malcolm Jenkins.

Jerry Jeudy and DeVonta Smith named Biletnikoff Award semifinalists
