Top five edge defenders signed to the Big Ten during the early signing period

Top five edge defenders signed to the Big Ten during the early signing period #GoBucks

The initial hype of the early signing period has died down, but there was a ton of talent to explore and so much so we are breaking it down by position. We have already dove into the top five quarterbacksrunning backswide receivers, tight ends, offensive tackles, and interior offensive linemen to sign with Big Ten teams and now we want to break down a position that Ohio State has struggled in with edge defenders.

The Big Ten can recruit pass rushers and edge defenders as evidenced by the conference snagging four of the top 20 edge rushers in the class. It is a shame that the Buckeyes are not present on this list, but it is also more depressing that the Michigan Wolverines make an appearance twice, but  let’s now dive into the top five edge defenders to sign with Big Ten teams during the early signing period according to 247Sports.

Also, other sites may have some of the players assigned to different positions, but we’re just going by how 247Sports has them classified.

Scouting report

Via 247Sports’ Andrew Ivins:

A spider out on the edge with what appears to be some of the longest limbs in the cycle. Size hasn’t been verified in-person, but reportedly measured 6-foot-6, 218 pounds the summer before his senior season and had a near 84-inch wingspan. Is still figuring out how to consistently create pressure after making the transition from basketball to football, but has put very encouraging stretches of play on tape. Wins more times than not with his abnormal reach, but can also catch opposing tackles off guard with his initial burst. Has operated primarily out of a wide-9 technique at the prep level and will likely need to keep doing the same thing on Saturdays unless he undergoes a major physical transformation and adds a ton of bulk to a rather slender frame. Should be viewed as a developmental pass rusher with a ton of upside. Must improve his game in a variety of different ways, but could prove to be quite the score for someone as his length allows him to attack the corner like few others. Rare features destined to draw the eyes of NFL scouts if he keeps progressing.

Scouting report

Via 247Sports’ Brian Dohn:

Quick-twitched athlete covers a lot of ground in first few steps with big upside. Plays basketball and has two-way snaps at Gwynn Park as an edge rusher and receiver and tight end. Can rush the passer, chase plays down and possesses the athleticism to drop into coverage. Has verified size and length, and the frame to add 20 to 30 pounds and not lose speed or agility. During in-person evaluation, quickness at the snap and athleticism were quickly noticeable. Plays standing up but could put his hand on the ground. Shows explosion at the snap and can dip his shoulder to get around the edge. Body control is good and will continue to improve as his frame fills out. Changes direction with balance. Known how to use his hands to keep the offensive lineman off. Relies heavily on speed and superior athleticism as the high school level. Aggressive tackler and does well in one-on-one situations because of his length and tenacity. Explosion shows best when lined up inside with hand on the ground. Displays some stack-and-shed ability. Willing to do anything to help his team. Sometimes looks a little unsure and it impacts the speed of play. Building muscle mass and adding strength is vital to be effective at the Power 5 level. Developing his technique and combining move sets is needed. Can be a high-level edge player for a top program. Has NFL draft potential.

2024 3-star EDGE commits to Michigan football

Michigan football commits that moved up in latest On3 recruiting rankings

Good news also comes with some bad.

On3 is cementing itself as the new premier recruiting service of late. Founded by Shannon Terry — who also founded Rivals and 247Sports — On3 is forward-thinking and becoming more of a standard than an upstart, though 247Sports is still stalwart in terms of its recruiting rankings.

The company released new recruiting rankings for 2024 on Monday and Michigan football saw four players move up significantly.

Running back commit Jordan Marshall was already in the top 100, but he moved up over 40 spots to No. 31 overall — which is within potential five-star range should he remain there. The cut-off is currently the top 15, but the top 32 according to On3’s proprietary rankings will all be five-stars.

Once a three-star recruit, edge rusher commit Devon Baxter is now a four-star, up to No. 200 overall.

Jaden Smith, another edge rusher/linebacker-type, was unrated at the time of his commitment, but on the heels of ESPN giving him a high-ranking, On3 followed suit, ranking him in the four-star range at No. 249 overall.

Lastly, linebacker commit Cole Sullivan also moved up from being a three-star recruit, and is now a four-star at No. 257 overall.

While that’s the good news, there is also some bad news. Once a five-star, quarterback Jadyn Davis is continuing to plummet across the recruiting rankings, and nowhere is it more stark than on On3. Davis has dropped to No. 188 overall after having been at No. 105 previously.

Of Michigan’s 25 commits in 2024, 15 are four-stars with 10 being three-stars.

Twitter reactions: Michigan football stays hot and lands edge rusher Devon Baxter

He’s going to be a solid player! #GoBlue

Michigan football landed a pair of commitments this past weekend when four-star receiver I’Marion Stewart and three-star running back Micah Kaapana pledged to the Wolverines.

And the maize and blue received another commitment on Monday when three-star edge rusher Devon Baxter committed to the Wolverines over Virginia Tech. Baxter also had offers from Rutgers, Boston College, Penn State, Tennessee, Cincinnati, and others.

The 6-foot-6, 225-pound edge rusher is the 505th-ranked recruit and the 32nd-best edge rusher in the 2024 class, according to the Composite ranking. Baxter hails from Brandywine (Maryland) Gwynn Park.

The Wolverines now have 22 commitments in the 2024 class.

After Baxter committed to Michigan, we checked Twitter and put together a post of all the best reactions.

2024 3-star EDGE commits to Michigan football

HUGE! #GoBlue

After hosting mostly commits (with a handful of uncommitted prospects) over the weekend, Michigan football is working to make it so everyone on campus for ‘Victors Weekend’ ends up in the 2024 class.

Of the 18 official visitors, only five were uncommitted to the maize and blue, but that number appears to be dwindling on Monday.

Hailing from Brandywine (Md.) Gwynn Park, three-star edge rusher Devon Baxter was one of the five uncommitted prospects on campus. However, the No. 506 player in the country (per the 247Sports Composite) is uncommitted no more, as he chose the Wolverines over Virginia Tech on Monday, thus pushing the number of commits who were on campus this weekend to 14.

The No. 32 EDGE and 13th-best player in the state of Maryland, Baxter has offers from Virginia Tech, Rutgers, Boston College, Cincinnati, Duke, Maryland, Minnesota, Penn StateTennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and others. Baxter does have an official visit set for Virginia Tech this weekend, but there’s no indication that that will still take place.

Of the 18 players who visited this weekend, the only ones who have yet to pledge to Michigan are all four-star prospects: CB Aaron Scott, OT Michael Uini, LB Jeremiah Beasley, and WR Jordan Shipp.

Michigan football edge target sets decision date, time

Looking good for the good guys! #GoBlue

Coming out of Victors Weekend, Michigan football’s big official visit weekend that saw most of its 2024 commits make their way to campus, it doesn’t look like the Wolverines will need to wait long to get good news.

A few uncommitted prospects were also in Ann Arbor, including Ohio cornerback Aaron Scott, Texas offensive tackle Michael Uini, Michigan linebacker Jeremiah Beasley and Maryland edge Devon Baxter. The Wolverines are in good standing with all of the above (though Scott is perhaps leaning toward Ohio State). However, one plans to make his decision sooner rather than later.

Per On3’s Zach Libby, Baxter announced on his Instagram story that he will be make his college commitment on Monday night (June 19) at 8 p.m. EDT.

Hailing from Brandywine (Maryland) Gwynn Park, Baxter is a three-star prospect at No. 506 overall per the 247Sports composite. The No. 32 edge and 13th-best player in the state of Maryland, Baxter has offers from Virginia Tech, Rutgers, Boston College, Cincinnati, Duke, Maryland, Minnesota, Penn State, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and others.

Baxter plans an official visit to Virginia Tech, seen as the other school in the competition, on June 23. He has four 247Sports crystal ball predictions, all indicating he’ll don a winged helmet in college.

New crystal ball predictions in for Michigan football following recruiting weekend

Michigan continues to trend for top targets!

Michigan football landed a pair of commitments this past weekend. Four-star wide receiver I’Marion Stewart pledged to the Wolverines on Friday night and three-star running back Micah Kaapana chose Michigan on Saturday.

The Wolverines hosted some big names, along with several 2024 commits, this past weekend. After the recruiting weekend ended, crystal ball predictions came in for the maize and blue.

Devon Baxter

Three crystal balls came in for Michigan for the three-star edge defender.

The 6-foot-6, 225-pound rusher out of Brandywine (Maryland) Gwynn Park is a three-star recruit according to the composite. He was a four-star at one point. He is the 506th-ranked recruit and the 32nd-ranked edge rusher in the 2024 cycle.

Looking at the recruiting prediction machine on On3, Michigan has a 96.1% chance to land Baxter.

Baxter holds offers from Rutgers, Virginia Tech, Penn State, Minnesota, Tennessee, West Virginia and others.

Michael Uini

Like Baxter, the recruitment of offensive tackle Michael Uini has been rather quiet. But after Uini was on campus this past weekend, two crystal ball predictions came in for the Wolverines by two national recruiting analysts on 247Sports.

The 6-foot-7, 290-pound offensive tackle is out of Copperas Cove (Texas) and is a four-star talent according to the composite. He is the 126th-ranked recruit and the eighth OT in the 2024 cycle.

On3’s recruiting prediction machine, the Wolverines have an 87% chance to land the massive tackle.

He holds offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and many more.

Michigan football trending for another 2024 four-star EDGE from DMV

All the defensive linemen are belong to us! #GoBlue

Michigan football continues to be on a heater on the recruiting trail. And you never walk away from the table when you’re on a heater.

The Wolverines are trending for multiple edge rushers and defensive linemen of late, with former Notre Dame commit Owen Wafle and highly coveted EDGE Darien Mayo looking more and more like they’ll wear winged helmets in their future.

Another appears destined to end up in Ann Arbor according to some new predictions.

Both E.J. Holland and Zach Libby over at The Wolverine (On3) have logged predictions for Michigan football to land Devon Baxter, a 2024 Brandywine (Md.) Gwynn Park four-star edge rusher. Baxter is rated the No. 373 player in the country according to the On3 Industry Ranking and the 26th-best edge rusher, as well as the 12th-best player in the state of Maryland.

According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, Michigan football has a 94.3% chance of landing Baxter.

Baxter is expected to visit Ann Arbor next month, as well as Virginia Tech. Rutgers appears high on his list, but he also has offers from the likes of Penn State, Tennessee, Maryland, and Minnesota.
