Eagles 16-man practice squad prediction ahead of final roster cuts

Philadelphia Eagles 16-man practice squad prediction ahead of final roster cutdowns

The Eagles are counting down to the Tuesday afternoon deadline in which the organization will have to trim their roster down to 53 players, with a 16-man practice squad to be formed hours afterward.

With changes to the practice squad in recent years, Howie Roseman can have a farm system of versatile players to interchange weekly based on injury, opponent, or roster manipulation.

Of the 16 players allowed on Philadelphia’s practice squad, ten have to be rookies or second-year players, while the remaining six players have no limitations (veterans).

With the Eagles set for afternoon practice, here’s our final prediction for the team’s 16-man practice squad.

Stock up, stock down following Philadelphia Eagles preseason loss to the Miami Dolphins

The Eagles wrapped up their 2022 preseason on the road with a 48-10 loss to the Dolphins on Saturday evening in Miami Gardens.

The following 48 hours will be spent trimming the roster down to 53 players by the 4 p.m. deadline on Tuesday before preparing for the season opener in Detroit. Philadelphia sat their starters, choosing to feature undrafted free agents and veterans sitting on the roster bubble.

With several moves set to be made, here’s our final stock report of the preseason.

The offensive starters are set, and Philadelphia will make decisions about reserves at critical positions. On defense, the linebacker, cornerback, and safety spots are positions to watch, with potential trades and the August 30 deadline looming.

With several looming decisions awaiting, here are the Eagles who helped and hurt their roster causes.

1 player from each Eagles position group to watch vs. Dolphins

With the Philadelphia Eagles set to face the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium, here’s one player from each position group to watch.

With the Dolphins now cleared for action after a bout with a stomach bug, Miami will host Philadelphia in the preseason finale for both teams.

The Eagles will likely rest their starters, allowing several key rookies and bubble players to state their case for a spot on the 53-man roster.

Several younger veterans and undrafted free agents are looking for a place on the practice squad, a group that routinely sees action for Philadelphia during the regular season.

With roster cuts set for Tuesday afternoon, here’s one player to watch from each position group.

WATCH: Devon Allen hits paydirt in Eagles NFL preseason game

Devon Allen exploded onto the NFL scene with a 55-yard touchdown to help the Eagles defeat the Browns 21-20.

Devon Allen’s speed was never in question.

It was his time away from football to compete in the Olympics that could hinder his chances to make an NFL roster.

Those questions were answered in a big way on Sunday when he got behind the Cleveland Brown defense to score a 55-yard touchdown for the Philadelphia Eagles. As it turned out, the third-quarter score was the game-winning play as the Eagles defeated the Browns 21-20.

Allen signed a one-year contract with Philadelphia after his Pro Day in Eugene back in April. The last time he played football was back in 2015 with the Ducks when he was injured early in that season. From then on, Allen put all of his efforts to be a world-class hurdler.

His last race was at Hayward Field at the World Championships where he was disqualified due to a controversial false start. It seems like Allen has put that way behind him and is looking to make an impact with the Eagles.

So far so good.

Eagles’ Devon Allen showed off his rare track star speed on a 55-yard TD, and NFL fans were astonished

Allen can flat-out MOVE!

Devon Allen might be a football player for the Eagles now, but he’s far more well known for his trademark speed. The 27-year-old is an Olympian-level, finishing in the top five in each of the last two Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo. Allen’s all-time personal best of 12.84 seconds on the 110-meter hurdle is the third-fastest in history.

Already a world-class track star, Allen decided to try his hand at football this year. After running a 4.35 on the 40-yard dash at Oregon’s spring pro day, the Eagles were impressed enough to bring the lightning-quick runner onto their roster. After all, speed kills in football, and Allen has it in spades.

On Sunday afternoon, with the Eagles taking on the Browns (+1) in the preseason, Allen’s speed was quite evident when he positively blew by the entire Cleveland secondary on a very easy deep touchdown:

Holy cow. I don’t know that I’ve seen anyone already in the NFL who can burn professional players so casually. It’s almost as if the Browns’ defenders were toasted the moment Allen started running, as he turned on the jets in the blink of an eye.

Here’s another mind-boggling angle showing off Allen’s ridiculous speed:

To put the cherry on top, Allen apparently got to keep the ball from his first NFL touchdown:

What a special moment.

If Allen’s bringing this speed to Sundays, the Eagles might have themselves yet another electric weapon to utilize.

Devon Allen shows off his Olympic speed — and celebration — for the Eagles

Eagles wide receiver Devon Allen showed off his Olympic-level speed on this touchdown against the Browns.

The Philadelphia Eagles made a number of moves this offseason, including adding at wide receiver with the trade for A.J. Brown. But Brown was not the only addition to the roster at receiver, as the team signed former Oregon wide receiver, and current Olympic-level hurdler, Devon Allen.

Allen showed off that Olympic speed Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, racing behind the secondary for this long touchdown catch:

Of course, when you are an elite-level hurdler, the celebration dance is easy:

This has been a busy spring and summer for Allen. He participated in Oregon’s Pro Day back in April, and ran an unofficial 4.35-second 40-yard dash. Following that performance, the Eagles brought him in for a workout in April, leading to a three-year undrafted rookie deal.

Back in July at the 2022 World Athletic Championships, Allen was disqualified for a false start in the final race. It was a controversial ruling to say the least.

On this play, however, there was no flag, and no controversy.

Watch: Eagles QB Reid Sinnett connects with WR Devon Allen for a 55-yard TD pass vs. Browns

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Reid Sinnett showed off his arm on this 55-yard bomb to wide receiver Devon Allen in the third quarter against the Cleveland Browns

Devon Allen entered Sunday’s preseason matchup against the Browns needing to make a huge impact, and the Olympic hurdler did just that late in the third quarter.

Allen was the recipient of a 55-yard bomb from quarterback Reid Sinnett that resulted in a touchdown to even things up 20-20 with 3:42 remaining in the quarter.

Allen was a speedster at Oregon before transitioning to track & field full time, and he’s looking to find a spot on the Eagles roster.

Philadelphia Eagles roster bubble: 15 players who need a strong performance against the Cleveland Browns

After two days of intense practice, the Philadelphia Eagles will try to pick up their first preseason win when they clash with the Cleveland Browns at FirstEnergy Stadium. Cleveland (1-0) is coming off an opening victory over the Jaguars and dealing with the knowledge that Deshaun Watson will miss the first 11 games of the season while serving a suspension.

Philadelphia (0-1) will likely rest their starters after those joint practices, allowing key veterans and rookies to move off or on the roster bubble.

With the roster needing to be trimmed to 80 players by Tuesday, here are 15 players who need strong performances against Cleveland.
