Clemson remains the top dog in the ACC with a statement win over NC State

Clemson makes a statement with a huge College GameDay win over NC State.

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers hosted NC State for ESPN’s College GameDay and did not disappoint their fans.

Clemson made a statement Saturday night with a 30-13 win over Dave Doeren and NC State. Though things were close in the first half, the Tigers dominated the Wolfpack in the second half giving everyone a look at why they’re considered the best team in the ACC and one of the best in the country.

On offense, starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei proved once again that he is a different player this season, putting together another excellent performance. The junior quarterback completed 21-30 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown through the air while having a big night on the ground. Uiagalelei ran the ball 14 times for 73-yards ad two touchdowns as he continues to show people why he’s Clemson’s starting quarterback.

The score may not show it, but Clemson’s defense was dominant against NC State’s offense, particularly on the line. The Tigers’ defensive line proved too much for the Wolfpack’s offensive line, repeatedly causing issues for NC State starting quarterback Devin Leary.

The unit held NC State’s offense to just 34 yards on the ground as they continue to make teams one-dimensional. The defense allowed just 279 total yards in the game.

This win was a massive statement for the Tigers as NC State entered the game with a lot of hype surrounding the group.

Clemson will head to Boston College Saturday, October 8th, for an in-conference matchup next week.

Dillon Gabriel No. 7 in CBS Sports’ first QB Rankings of 2022

Oklahoma’s Dillon Gabriel slots in at No. 7 on CBS Sports QB Power rankings to start the season.

When Dillon Gabriel takes the field on Saturday against UTEP, it will mark his 26th start and 27th game at the collegiate level.

He’s seasoned and has been productive. He’s certainly one of the ten best college quarterbacks right now. Reunited with Jeff Lebby, Gabriel and the Oklahoma offense are ready to roll.

CBS Sports agrees that Gabriel is one of the ten best QB’s in the country. Gabriel comes in at No. 7 in the first edition of their QB Power rankings. According to Tom Fornelli, the rankings are based on “highly-scientific criteria, including how well they’re playing, how well their teams are playing, their statistical profiles, and those aforementioned vibes, baby.”

Notable names ahead of him include the reigning Heisman Trophy winner in Bryce Young and former Heisman finalist C.J. Stroud. Devin Leary, Caleb Williams, Hendon Hooker, and Grayson McCall round out the group in front of Gabriel. Fornelli had this to say in his excerpt about Gabriel:

Gabriel missed nearly the entire 2021 season, but his prior performances at UCF and potential in Jeff Lebby’s offense make him deserving of placement. There aren’t many things in life you’ll see that are more beautiful than his deep ball down the left sideline. It’s up there with a sunset over the Pacific Ocean and wherever Instagram models are paid to be this weekend. – Fornelli, CBS Sports

The marriage between Lebby and Gabriel produced 3,653 passing yards (UCF freshman record), 29 touchdowns, and seven interceptions for a 156.9 efficiency rating. With better weapons in Norman and a better understanding of Lebby’s offense, Gabriel should have a monster season. Add that to the knowledge Lebby has gained since leaving UCF, and we could see some insane fireworks this season.  Gabriel should rise quite a few times in these rankings, and it’s possible by year’s end, he’s much higher than 7th.

Saints connected to another second-round QB in 2023 mock draft

The Saints have been connected to another second-round QB in the latest 2023 mock draft: NC State breakout Devin Leary

Here’s the latest 2023 NFL mock draft from Luke Easterling over at Draft Wire, who linked the New Orleans Saints to another quarterback in the second round: this time, it’s North Carolina State passer Devin Leary. Easterling projects five quarterbacks to go in the first round, with Leary one of three signal-callers going off the board in round two. So what’s his story?

Leary, who turns 23 in September, was recently named the ACC preseason player of the year after a huge 2021 campaign, in which he broke Philip Rivers’ school record for single-season touchdown passes (throwing 35 of them). After taking a redshirt in 2018 and starting eight games in 2019, his 2020 season was cut short by a broken leg. So he surprised a lot of people by stepping up in a big way last year — doubling his career passing numbers by going 283-of-431 (65.7%) for 3,433 yards with just five interceptions against those 35 touchdown passes. He added two more scores as a runner.

Now he’s got the program humming along in pursuit of a conference title, with the school pushing for Heisman Trophy consideration for him. It’s pretty impressive, but can he build enough momentum in 2022 to earn a high draft pick in the following spring? We’ll just have to watch and see.

It’s too soon to say whether or not the Saints will be on the lookout for a new quarterback in 2023, but they’ve certainly left the possibility open by signing Jameis Winston to another short-term contract. He’s got all of the weapons he needs to thrive this season, so there shouldn’t be any excuses should he fall short of expectations. It may be tough to find a great prospect without their first round pick but if this team has taught us anything it’s that they’ll act aggressively to go get their guy. Maybe that ends up being Leary.

NC State’s Doeren speaks on expectations for upcoming campaign

Following an abrupt end to their 2021-22 season with the Holiday Bowl being canceled due to UCLA’s COVID outbreak, NC State finished the season with a final record of 9-3.

Throughout last season, the Wolfpack had some nice wins against Atlantic Division opponents Clemson and Florida State, as well as suffered three big losses against Miami, Wake Forest, and Mississippi State that left them just shy of playing in the ACC Championship game.

Going into his 10th season as the Wolfpack’s head coach, Dave Doeren spoke at the ACC Football Kickoff in Charlotte about the Wolfpack’s expectations for the upcoming season, and how it will take making fewer mistakes on both ends of the ball to win the ACC Championship.

“It’s just another play… we lost two games last year that kept us out of that game (ACC Championship) to win it,” Doeren said Wednesday. “It’s one more play that you have to make. That’s it. Whether it’s a defensive play, offensive play, special teams play, we lost two one-possession games… If any of those plays change, we win that game.

“There’s a lot of mistakes that happen on both sides. In the end, it’s going to come down to one player making sometimes a routine play that changes the outcome of the game. For us, it’s just doing that repetitively. You have to do it in every game you play at the conference.”

Specifically, on the defensive side of the ball, Doeren would like to see the defense get more aggressive and create more turnovers this fall.

“To me, it’s about creating more fumbles on defense,” he said. “If we can continue to do what we’ve been doing, stopping people on third down, intercepting the football, the takeaways. When you get more sacks, you usually get more fumbles, and create more short fields for our offense.”

A big positive heading into the 2022 season for the Wolfpack is the number of returning players, including Devin Leary at starting quarterback. Leary finished the 2021 season throwing for 3,433 yards, posting the third-best completion percentage in school history at .657, and being named a finalist for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

Heading into his redshirt junior season at NC State, Leary knows what it takes to get his team to the next level, starting with him.

“This being my third year in the system, you know, I’ve got to take that next step of getting us out of bad plays,” he said. “I think that all starts with focusing more on defensive ID and bringing along younger guys too… teaching them and making sure they understand what they need to do.”

Even with Leary returning, many teams on NC State’s schedule also have their returning quarterbacks for this season. Returning starting quarterbacks is a common theme in the Atlantic Division of the ACC as all seven teams have their starting quarterbacks returning for the 2022 season.

“When you play ACC football every week, you’ve got to show up,” Doeren said. “It’s a very well-coached league. It’s a tough league. The kids play hard. Every time you go out there, you have to earn a victory.”

The Wolfpack is set to face off at East Carolina in the two teams’ season-opener on Sept. 3 at 12 p.m.

Where does DJ Uiagalelei rank among ACC starting quarterbacks?

One 247Sports reporter ranked the ACC’s quarterbacks ahead of the 2022 season, and DJ Uiagalelei’s ranking may surprise you.

For the first time in a long time, Clemson will not be recognized as having one of the top starting signal-callers in the ACC heading into a season.

The Tigers enter the 2022 season with rising junior DJ Uiagalelei at the helm, and despite being a preseason Heisman favorite last year, he didn’t quite live up to the lofty expectations.

Taking over for Trevor Lawrence in 2021, the former five-star recruit completed 55.6% of his passes for 2,246 yards, nine touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

With Uiagalelei’s struggles last year and the abundance of quarterback talent in the ACC, including Miami’s Tyler Van Dyke and NC State’s Devin Leary, many analysts and reporters don’t regard Uiagalelei as one of the top signal-callers in the 14-team conference.

Add in the arrival of five-star freshman Cade Klubnik, and there’s a real conversation about a potential quarterback battle if the Tigers’ offense doesn’t improve as the season prolongs.

As the college football season rapidly approaches, 247Sports’ Brad Crawford recently took a closer look at the ACC’s starting quarterbacks and ranked them.

Largely basing the rankings on end-of-the-year projections, here is where Crawford believes each signal-caller stacks up.

Ranking ACC teams by returning production

Clemson returns over 70 percent of its production from last season, but how do the Tigers stack up against the rest of the ACC?

It can be difficult at times to predict which college football teams will have tremendous success each season, but one indication to look for is the players that return to their respective programs.

Whether it be a fifth-year senior linebacker or a rising junior quarterback, having experienced players return for another season can give certain teams an edge over others that lose talent to the NFL draft, transfer portal or eligibility rules.

To properly examine the roster turnover ahead of the 2022 season, ESPN’s Bill Connelly recently broke down each FBS team’s returning production. Compared to the other conferences, the ACC is the third-highest in terms of average returning production at 66.5%.

As for Clemson, most of its offensive starters from last season will return this fall. The Tigers will lose, however, a lot of defensive production in the secondary with Andrew Booth Jr., Mario Goodrich and Nolan Turner departing for the NFL. Still, considering the team’s talent on both sides of the ball, Clemson’s ranking may be higher than some expect.

With that being said, here is where each ACC team ranks.

Stock Watch: Kenny Pickett, Jake Haener stay hot

Kenny Pickett and Jake Haener among those college passers who shined on Saturday, but a Spencer Rattler discussion might be needed.

This was, by any measure, a strange weekend of college football.

We saw one of the top-ten teams in the nation lose in overtime. We saw a senior linebacker from another top-ten team walk off the field, seemingly quitting the team, during the first half and then fire off some quickly-deleted tweets about his school from the locker room. A third top-ten team lost to the upstart Arkansas Razorbacks, who might be worth paying attention to over the next few weeks. Auburn turned to their backup quarterback to pull off a win over Georgia State that was 1-2 coming into the game. Bowling Green, 30-point underdogs to Minnesota, won on the road over the Golden Gophers.

There…there was a lot.

There were also some interesting quarterback performances to examine. Now, maybe it was a function of a beautiful weather in the Washington D.C. area this weekend, or maybe it was the craziness we saw in college football on Saturday, but Stock Watch this week is generally positive.

With two exceptions.

Clemson, N.C. State gridlocked at halftime

RALEIGH, N.C. — Clemson entered the half tied 7-7 with North Carolina State at Carter-Finley Stadium.

The Tigers again struggled to find their footing on offense except for one touchdown drive in the first quarter. Clemson went 0-for-5 on third down in the first half and gained just 87 yards on offense and 8 yards on the ground.

Defensively, it stood strong despite allowing its first touchdown of the season and missing linebacker James Skalski for much of the half due to an apparent upper body injury. In the first quarter, the Tigers capped off their best drive of the season with a 32-yard touchdown pass from D.J. Uiagalelei to Justyn Ross to give them a 7-0 lead with 9 minutes, 11 seconds to play in the frame. The drive covered 80 yards in five plays and 1:33.

N.C. State responded at the end of the quarter with a 10-play, 54-yard scoring drive in 4:43. The drive culminated in a 9-yard touchdown pass from Devin Leary to Emeka Emezie to tie the game with five seconds to play in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, both teams started drives with short fields via interceptions but failed to capitalize on the opportunity. The Wolfpack intercepted Uiagalelei on a tipped ball with 3:55 to play in the half and set up a 53-yard field goal attempt with 3 seconds left on the clock.

But Christopher Dunn’s attempt fell short and Clemson took a knee to send the game to halftime.

Football season has finally arrived. Time to represent your Tigers and show your stripes!
