Pittsburgh Penguins at New Jersey Devils odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at New Jersey Devils sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Pittsburgh Penguins (39-23-6) take on the New Jersey Devils (28-28-12) at Prudential Center in Newark Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET. We analyze the Penguins-Devils sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Penguins at Devils: Projected starting goalies

Matt Murray vs. MacKenzie Blackwood

Murray has made strides to reclaim his No. 1 job from All-Star Tristan Jarry, who has slumped since the break. Murray is 19-11-5 with a 2.89 goals against average and .898 save percentage with one shutout. He lost his only start in New Jersey Nov. 15, but he allowed just two goals on 21 shots in a 2-1 setback.

Blackwood puts his 22-13-8 record, 2.74 GAA and .915 SV% on the line against the Pens. He has split a pair of starts against Pittsburgh this season, posting a 2.93 GAA and .933 SV%. He won the battle against Murray Nov. 15, allowing just one goal on 39 shots.

Prediction

Devils 3, Penguins 2

Moneyline (ML)

The DEVILS (+155) are moderate underdogs at home, and that makes them a good value. They aren’t going to the playoffs this season, but rather than throw in the towel, they have been a thorn in everyone’s side lately. They have won three of their past four games, and they have lost in regulation just once in their past nine (6-1-2).

The Penguins (-189) are overwhelming favorites, but they shouldn’t be. In their past six road games, Pittsburgh has won just once, including losses to non-playoff teams in the Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Kings. and San Jose Sharks on a recent road trip.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Devils to grab the home win returns a profit of $15.50, while a $10 wager on the Penguins nets a profit of just $5.30.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Devils (+1.5, -176) are worth a look if you want a little insurance, and don’t trust New Jersey to keep up its strong play. The Penguins (-1.5, +145) are a tempting play, but they have struggled offensively on the road, posting just 10 total goals over their past six contests away from home.

Over/Under (O/U)

That brings us to why it’s a good idea to play the UNDER 5.5 (+110). Pittsburgh is averaging just 1.67 goals per game on the road in its past six. Toss in the fact Blackwood is 8-1-2 with a 2.13 GAA and .941 SV% with two shutouts in 11 starts since the All-Star break, and the recipe is there for an Under result.

St. Louis Blues at New Jersey Devils odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Friday’s St. Louis Blues at New Jersey Devils sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

The St. Louis Blues (40-17-10) continue their road trip against the New Jersey Devils (26-28-12) Friday at Prudential Center at 7 p.m. ET. We analyze the Blues-Devils sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Blues at Devils: Projected starting goalies

Jake Allen vs. Mackenzie Blackwood

Allen has a stellar 10-6-3 record, 2.31 goals against average and .922 save percentage overall this season. He is likely to start, giving All-Star Jordan Binnington a breather. Binnington has posted a solid 30-11-7 record, 2.56 GAA and .911 SV% in his 48 starts overall.

Blackwood has a solid 21-13-8 record, 2.71 GAA and .916 SV% in 45 appearances (41 starts), which is definitely impressive considering how New Jersey has struggled overall. He has been amazing since the All-Star break, going 7-1-2 with a 1.95 GAA and .947 SV% with two of his three shutouts.

Blues at Devils: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 4:50 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Blues 4, Devils 1

Moneyline (ML)

The BLUES (-189) are a bit expensive on the moneyline, but they’re a slam-dunk play. St. Louis has dominated this series in recent seasons, posting 16 wins in the past 21 meetings, including five straight victories in Newark, N.J. The favorite is 13-3 in the previous 16 meetings overall.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Blues to win returns a profit of $5.29 while a $10 wager on the Devils (+155) results in a profit of $15.50.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The BLUES (-1.5, +150) are a better bet against the spread, as they have just dominated this series against the Devils (+1.5, -182) in recent seasons.

Over/Under (O/U)

A small-unit wager on the UNDER 5.5 (-110) is warranted, as the Under is 4-0-1 in the past five meetings in Newark, and 4-1 in the past five battles overall. The Under is 6-3 in the past nine games for the Blues, too, including their 3-0 win over the Devils on Feb. 18.

New Jersey Devils at Vegas Golden Knights odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s New Jersey Devils at Vegas Golden Knights sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

The New Jersey Devils (26-27-12) visit the Vegas Golden Knights (36-23-8) Tuesday at T-Mobile Arena for a 10 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Devils-Golden Knights odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Both teams played Sunday. The Devils snapped a two-game skid with a 3-0 shutout win at the Anaheim Ducks, while the Golden Knights had an eight-game win streak snapped in a surprising 4-1 home loss to the Los Angeles Kings.

Vegas took the first regular-season matchup vs. New Jersey with a 4-3 decision on the road Dec. 3. C Jonathan Marchessault recorded a hat trick in the win, scoring all three goals in the third period.

Devils at Golden Knights: Projected starting goalies

MacKenzie Blackwood vs. Robin Lehner

Blackwood is 21-12-8 with a 2.71 goals against average, .916 save percentage and three shutouts through 44 games (40 starts). He had a six-game win streak snapped with a 2-1 overtime defeat at the Kings Saturday. He lost the Dec. 3 game vs. Vegas, allowing 4 goals on 30 shots.

Lehner, who is 17-10-5 with a 2.98 GAA and .919 SV%, will make his second start since being traded to Vegas from the Chicago Blackhawks. He beat the visiting Buffalo Sabres in his Golden Knights debut Friday, allowing just 2 goals on 34 shots in a 4-2 victory. While with the Blackhawks, he faced the Devils Dec. 23 and was removed early after giving up 3 goals on 24 shots in a 7-1 loss.

Prediction

Golden Knights 4, Sabres 1

Moneyline (ML)

PASS. The Golden Knights (-304) are huge favorites – they’re 21-11-4 at home – but the price is too chalky. Every $3.08 wagered on the Knights to win will profit only $1. Considering the Devils (+240) knocked Lehner out early in the Dec. 23 game in Chicago, the price is tempting and offers decent value, but I’m going to SKIP IT and focus on the spread and total.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (PL/ATS)

Back VEGAS (-1.5, -121) as the STRONGEST PLAY. The Golden Knights are 7-1 in their last eight home games, have covered the PL in four of their last six and lead the Pacific Division by 2 points. The Devils (+1.5, +100) are last in the Metropolitan Division, all but eliminated from playoff contention and 16-17 vs. the PL on the road. VEGAS should win by 2 goals or more.

Over/Under (O/U)

Back the UNDER 5.5 (+115). The Devils have played to 7 Unders in a row, including four games with a combined total of just 3 goals. Meanwhile, Vegas’ last three games played Under 6 goals. It’s a good value at plus-money after the line was initially set at 6.5.

New Jersey Devils at Carolina Hurricanes odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Friday’s New Jersey Devils at Carolina Hurricanes sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and best bets.

The New Jersey Devils (21-25-10) visit the Carolina Hurricanes (32-21-3) Friday at PNC Arena for a 7 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Devils-Hurricanes odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

The Devils rallied with a four-goal third period to beat the visiting Detroit Red Wings 4-1 Thursday. New Jersey has won three of its last four games and is 4-1-3 since returning from the All-Star break. The Hurricanes last played Tuesday, falling to the Dallas Stars 4-1, snapping a two-game win streak and wrapping up a 2-2 road trip.

New Jersey won the first head-to-head meeting of the season, 5-3 at Carolina Nov. 2.

Devils at Hurricanes: Projected starting goalies

Louis Domingue vs. Petr Mrazek

Domingue is 3-6-2 with a 3.74 goals against average (GAA) and .882 save percentage. Domingue lost his last five starts, allowing 19 goals on 134 shots. He is 2-2-2 at home this season with a 2.82 GAA and .903 SV%.

Mrazek is 18-15-2 with a 2.74 GAA and a .901 SV% with three shutouts. He enters on a three-game skid and most recently allowed three goals on 36 shots in Tuesday’s loss at Dallas. He is 0-2 in February – both road games – but touts a 14-7 home record with a 2.43 GAA and .908 SV%. The ‘Canes could go with James Reimer, who won his last four starts and is 14-6-1 overall with a 2.61 GAA and a .917 SV%.

Prediction

Hurricanes 6, Devils 1

Moneyline (ML)

AVOID. Carolina (-238) is a big favorite, but I’m not into laying that kind of chalk. Every $2.38 wagered on the Hurricanes ML profits only $1 if they win. I’ll PASS and focus on the puck line and Over/Under.

FYI: Carolina is 18-9-1 at home, while New Jersey (+190) is 12-15 on the road.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (PL/ATS)

Because New Jersey (+1.5, -143) played Thursday, CAROLINA (-1.5, +120) is worth a small wager. It’s only a slight lean because the Hurricanes are 24-32 vs. the PL overall and 12-16 vs. the PL at home. New Jersey is 27-29 vs. the PL overall and 12-15 vs. the PL on the road.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 5.5 (-139) is the STRONGEST PLAY. I wouldn’t be surprised if the number moves to 6 by early afternoon. Eight of Domingue’s 12 starts have seen at least 6 total goals scored.

Every $1.39 bet on the Over profits $1 if there are 6 or more goals scored.

New Jersey Devils at Washington Capitals odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s New Jersey Devils at Washington Capitals sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

The New Jersey Devils (17-22-7) and Washington Capitals (31-11-5) tangle at the Capital One Arena in Washington at 7 p.m. ET. We analyze the Devils-Capitals sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

Devils at Capitals: Projected starting goalies

Louis Domingue vs. Ilya Samsonov

Domingue didn’t have it last time out against the Maple Leafs in Toronto Tuesday, as he was bombed for five goals on just 19 shots in a loss. However, he had turned back the Lightning to snap a 10-game win streak, and before that he allowed just one goal on 34 shots in a win in this very same venue against the Capitals last Saturday. Overall, he is 3-5-0 with a 3.55 goals against average and .884 save percentage in 10 appearances.

The rookie Samsonov continues to eat into Stanley Cup winner Braden Holtby’s playing time. He is 13-2-1 with a 2.11 GAA and .925. He wasn’t in net last weekend when the Devils surprised the Caps, but it was Holtby instead. Look for Samsonov to right the ship.

Devils at Capitals: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 8:15 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Capitals 5, Devils 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Capitals (-334) are overwhelming favorites, and if you’ve read my stuff in the past, you’ll know I choose to avoid favorites of more than -160 or -170 at the max. AVOID. On the flip side, the Devils (+260) pulled an upset last time they visited last week, but it’s not going to happen again.

New to sports betting? Every $10 wagered on the Capitals ML will only profit $2.99 if they win.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

You’ll still have to lay money if you plan to bet the CAPITALS (-1.5, -115) on the puck line, but it’s almost even-money. You can expect Washington to be awfully angry after being embarrassed by these same Devils last weekend. If you’re believing in the Devils (+1.5, -106), or you feel this game will be a close one, New Jersey is nearly even-money catching a goal and a half. I’m not buying it, though.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 6.5 (+105) is worth a small-unit wager at plus-money. The Over has hit in nine of the past 13 games overall for the Devils, and five of their past seven road outings. In addition, they’re playing their fourth game in six days, and they’re 4-1 in the past five in the fourth game of a 4-in-6 situation. The Over is also 19-8 in the past 27 at home for the Caps.

New Jersey Devils at Toronto Maple Leafs odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s New Jersey Devils at Toronto Maple Leafs sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

The New Jersey Devils (17-21-7) and Toronto Maple Leafs (24-16-6) will tangle at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto at 7 p.m. ET. We analyze the Devils-Maple Leafs sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

Devils at Maple Leafs: Projected starting goalies

Louis Domingue vs. Frederik Andersen

It’s hard to imagine that the Devils get away from Domingue, who has posted consecutive victories against the Washington Capitals on the road and the Tampa Bay Lightning at home, snapping their 10-game winning streak. In three appearances in January he has a 2-0-0 record, 1.24 goals against average and a .959 save percentage in his two starts and three appearances. If Mackenzie Blackwood is in the crease, he’ll bring a 1-2-1 record with a 3.88 GAA and .891 SV% in four January starts.

Andersen is 21-8-5 with a 2.82 GAA and a .912 SV%, but the All-Star has struggled in the month of January. He has allowed three or more goals in each of his four outings this month, including four goals on just 12 shots in Florida Sunday before being pulled early in the second period.

Prediction

Maple Leafs 5, Devils 3

Moneyline (ML)

The Maple Leafs (-278) are too expensive, especially the way Andersen has been tending net recently. If anything, the Devils (+220) are worth a roll of the dice, as they’ve been giant killers lately. Still, the best idea is to AVOID.

New to sports betting? Every $10 wagered on the Devils ML will profit $22 if they win.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The MAPLE LEAFS (-1.5, +105) are a little better than even money laying the goal and a half, so if you are feeling a Toronto resurgence following its beatdown in Florida, by all means this is the way to go. I don’t love it, but I’d play a small-unit wager on the home side considering the Devils are 0-4 in the past four meetings, and 1-5 in the past six trips to Toronto.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 6.5 (+100) is where it’s at, going 8-3-3 in the previous 14 meetings in this series. The Over is also 4-1 in Toronto’s past five at home, 4-1 in the past five as a favorite and 7-1 in the previous eight against Metropolitan Division foes.

New Jersey Devils at New York Rangers odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s New Jersey Devils at New York Rangers sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The New Jersey Devils (15-20-7) visit the New York Rangers (20-18-4) for a Metropolitan Division rivalry game in Madison Square Garden for a 7 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Devils-Rangers odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Devils at Rangers: Projected starting goalies

Mackenzie Blackwood vs. Igor Shesterkin

Blackwood lost his last two starts, including a 4-3 OT loss to the New York Islanders, dropping his record to 14-11-6 with a 2.86 goals against average and .907 save percentage. Oddly enough, Blackwood has performed better on the road this season with a 9-4 record with a 2.73 GAA and .919 SV%.

Rookie goaltender Shesterkin notched a win in his first start, despite giving up a goal on his first shot faced, by stopping 29 shots in a 5-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche Jan. 7. The 2014 fourth-round pick has been waiting in the wings to succeed G Henrik Lundqvist — Shesterkin was 15-4-3 with a 1.93 GAA in his second AHL season before being called up.

Devils at Rangers: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 2:55 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Rangers 5, Devils 3

Moneyline (ML)

The Rangers’ -167 is the right side of this bet but the moneyline is a stay away for me. On one hand, the Rangers have a way better moneyline balance on the season than the Devils; Rangers are +$802 compared to the Devils’ -$1,305 moneyline performance. On the other hand, the Rangers’ moneyline is terrible value.

PASS on Rangers’ -167 to win outright.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

All the trends point to the Rangers -1.5 (+155) in this game. The home team is 4-1 in the last five meetings and the favorite is also 4-1 in those games. The Devils are 1-6 in the last seven meetings in New York. Seven of the last 10 Devils-Rangers games have been decided by two or more goals, so the puck line isn’t unreasonable.

Over/under (O/U)

Part of the reason why we’re off the Rangers -167 moneyline is why we are betting OVER 6.5 (+125). Getting a plus-betting line has me taking the Over because the Over is 7-1-1 in their last nine meetings. Neither team excels defensively with the Devils allowing the fourth-most goals and the Rangers rank 13th in goals allowed in the NHL. Also, both teams should have plenty of opportunities to light the lamp; the Rangers have allowed the second-most scoring chances against them and the Devils are ranked 12th in SCA.

Previewing Friday’s New Jersey Devils at Colorado Avalanche sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

Devils at Avalanche: Projected starting goalies

Mackenzie Blackwood vs. Philipp Grubauer

Blackwood has been charged with three losses in his last five outings and is now 8-9-4 for the season. He has a .902 save percentage and 3.00 goals against average.

Grubauer has won three straight decisions and is 10-5-2 in his first year as the true starter. He has a .914 SV% and 2.76 GAA.

Prediction

Avalanche 6, Devils 2

Moneyline (ML)

The AVALANCHE (-250) are about as safe of a play as we get in hockey and the odds are higher than they should be with a $10 bet returning an adequate profit of $4. The Devils (+200) are second-last in the NHL with just 23 points through 30 games. New Jersey head coach John Hynes was fired earlier this month, and the team has now lost six straight games.

The Avalanche are 9-3-2 at home and coming off a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers Wednesday. They’ve won seven of their last eight games.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Double down on the hosts and back the AVALANCHE (-1.5, +110) to win by at least 2 goals and receive an $11 profit on a $10 bet. All but two of the Devils’ last six losses were decided by at least two goals as they play the third of a four-game Western Conference swing. Five of Colorado’s last seven wins came by at least a two-goal margin.

The Avs are 20-11 against the spread overall and 8-6 at home. The Devils are just 10-20 ATS overall and 5-9 on the road.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 6.5 (+115) with the very real possibility of the Avs taking care of the 7 goals all on their own. Both teams hit the Over in just four of their last 10 games, but Colorado has scored at least six goals in a game five times this season. We won’t need much from New Jersey.

New York Islanders at Dallas Stars odds, picks and best bets

Analyzing Saturday’s New York Islanders at Dallas Stars NHL matchup, with NHL betting odds, picks and best bets

The Dallas Stars (16-11-3) entertain the New York Islanders (19-6-2) at American Airlines Arena Saturday at 9 p.m. ET. We analyze the Islanders-Stars odds and lines while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Islanders at Stars: Projected starting goalies

Semyon Varlamov vs. Ben Bishop

Varlamov has a 9-3-2 record for New York with a 2.35 goals against average and .923 save percentage. The projected Islanders starter stopped 31 of 33 shots in a home, overtime win versus the Vegas Golden Knights Thursday night.

Bishop has a 10-6-2 record. He has a 2.19 goals against average and .929 save percentage in 20 games played. The expected Dallas starter stopped 36 of 38 shots in a 3-2 overtime win against the Winnipeg Jets Thursday.

Islanders at Stars: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 10:30 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Stars 3, Islanders 2

Moneyline (ML)

The STARS (-150) and Islanders (+125) are both rested headed into this matchup. New York is 3-2 in their last five games and Dallas is 1-3-1 in that span. Expect this game to be close and low-scoring. New York allows just 2.58 goals on the road and Dallas yields two goals a game (10-4-1 at home). BACK DALLAS slightly.

A $10 bet with Dallas results in a $6.67 profit with an outright win for the Stars.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Stars are 16-14 ATS, while New York is 14-14 vs. the spread. This is one to AVOID, as the Islanders number at +1.5 (-239) has too much tax. That payout on a $10 bet would be just $4.18 for the Islanders to lose by one goal or win outright.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 5.5 (-150) is fine and conservative play. There were rumblings that the over/under could go to five here, but the line hasn’t moved as of yet. That is fortunate as most projections suggested a 3-2 outcome. Consider that the Islanders give up just 2.41 goals per game (3rd) and the Stars 2.43 goals per game (4th), I side with the UNDER Saturday night.

Placing a $10 bet here will give a bettor a $6.67 profit with a total of six or fewer goals scored.

Prediction

Predators 5, Devils 2

Moneyline (ML)

The PREDATORS (-228), 7-5-4 at home, are the rested team going up against a Devils team on the second half of a back-to-back. New Jersey is 0-3-1 in their last four games while being outscored 17-6. New Jersey also has lost 11 of its last 12 road games coming off an overtime result.

A $10 bet with Nashville results in a $4.39 profit with an outright win for the Predators.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Devils are 10-18 ATS, which is last in the NHL. The Predators have more than enough offense to connect on the spread (-1.5, +110).

A $10.00 bet here results in a $11.00 profit with the expectation Nashville wins by two or more goals Saturday.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 5.5 (-143) is worth a safe play. New Jersey expects to be a little more loose with pucks in their zone Saturday as they face a Nashville team that likes to push the puck up the ice. The Predators average 3.31 goals per game at home but also allow 3.06 goals per contest. New Jersey should be able to score a few goals, which help my LEAN toward Nashville.

Placing a $10 bet here will give a bettor a $6.99 profit with a total of seven or more goals scored.
