Detroit Red Wings at New York Islanders odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Detroit Red Wings at New York Islanders sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

The Detroit Red Wings (12-31-3) and New York Islanders (27-13-4) battle at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y. at 7 p.m. ET. We analyze the Red Wings-Islanders sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

Red Wings at Islanders: Projected starting goalies

Jimmy Howard vs. Thomas Greiss

Howard is confirmed to start for the Wings, and that’s good news for the Islanders. The Red Wings veteran is just 2-15-1 with a 4.10 goals against average and .880 save percentage this season, and he has allowed five or more goals in three of his past four starts while failing to win in 11 outings dating back to Oct. 29.

Greiss is likely to make the start after Semyon Varlamov was trucked in Monday’s outing against the rival New York Rangers, coughing up six goals. Greiss came on and saved the only chance he saw. He enters 12-7-0 with a 2.57 GAA and .919 SV%.

Prediction

Islanders 5, Red Wings 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Islanders (-334) are heavy favorites, and my rule of thumb is to avoid favorites of more than -160 or -170 at the max. AVOID. Meanwhile, the Red Wings (+260) can’t be trusted, even though they do have two wins in the past three outings. The Wings have dropped five in a row on the road, outscored 20-10 during the span.

New to sports betting? Every $10 wagered on the Islanders ML will only profit $2.99  if they win.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The ISLANDERS (-1.5, -110) are going to be angry after being embarrassed at MSG on Monday. Regardless of whether it’s Greiss or Varlamov in between the pipes, you can depend upon the Isles to get it done on home ice.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 5.5 (-106) is worth a small-unit wager. The Islanders shouldn’t be a problem for offense, especially against a goalie giving up four or more goals.

Buffalo Sabres at Detroit Red Wings odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Sunday’s Buffalo Sabres at Detroit Red Wings sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Buffalo Sabres (19-19-7) take on the Detroit Red Wings (12-30-3) in an Atlantic Division contest at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit Sunday at 5 p.m. ET. We analyze the Sabres-Red Wings odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Sabres at Red Wings: Projected starting goalies

Linus Ullmark vs. Jonathan Bernier

Ullmark has logged a 2.87 goals against average and .910 save percentage this season. He recorded a 41-save shutout at Detroit Oct. 25, and last season registered a .927 SV% in four games against the Red Wings. Ullmark has a history of performing well on the road.

Bernier (2.99 GAA, .904 SV%) has fared well of late (.937 SV% over his last six games) and is the lean to start Sunday’s home game against Buffalo. He’s backing a defense that has yielded fewer shots of late.

Sabres at Red Wings: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 9:30 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Buffalo 5, Detroit 3

Moneyline (ML)

AVOID. The Sabres (-139) are 3-13 over their last 16 games as road favorites and 3-13 in their last 16 contests after losing a game by three goals. The Red Wings (+115) are 4-9 over their last 13 home games.

The lean is the more talented Buffalo club, but there are all kinds of cross signals in this one. Both teams show some upside on offense and defense, but the Sabres have struggled mightily on the road of late. Buffalo played at home Saturday and coughed up six goals (after yielding five Thursday).

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Wings (+1.5, -238) are 9-14 against the puck line when playing at home. Again, the Sabres (-1.5, +195) are a lean, but no-go on a play.

Over/Under (O/U)

The strongest play on the board is this one. The Sabres have created more scoring chances over recent games. That hasn’t added up to the goals we’d expect (especially on the road), but Buffalo’s penalty killing of late has been suspect. The OVER 5.5 (-129) has some value.

Ottawa Senators at Detroit Red Wings odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Friday’s Ottawa Senators at Detroit Red Wings sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Ottawa Senators (16-22-5) visit the Detroit Red Wings (11-30-3) Friday in a key battle for top spot in the 2020 NHL draft lottery. The game at Little Caesars Arena is set for a 7:30 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Senators-Red Wings sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Senators at Red Wings: Projected starting goalies

Marcus Hogberg vs. Jimmy Howard

Hogberg is coming off a relief appearance against the Washington Capitals Tuesday, in which he stopped 10 of 11 shots on goal. He was 1-1-2 over his previous four starts and 1-2-2 on the season. He has a .894 save percentage and 3.42 goals against average.

Howard enters the day on a personal 10-game losing skid (0-9-1) and is just 2-14-1 for the season. The 35-year-old has a .884 SV% and 4.04 GAA.

Make this game more interesting by getting some action on it, or other NHL matchups, with a hockey bet at BetMGM.

Senators at Red Wings: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 10:30 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Senators 6, Red Wings 4

Moneyline (ML)

Take the value on the SENATORS (-106) as the team with the better record in a coin-flip game between the bottom two seeds in the Atlantic Division. Ottawa has lost five straight games, including the 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Caps Tuesday, and they’re 5-15-3 away from home for the year. The Red Wings (-115) are just 7-14-1 at home and 2-8 across their last 10 games, though they beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 Tuesday for a rare two points.

The Sens rank 29th in the NHL with a minus-31 goal differential, but the 31st-ranked Wings are minus-72 in that department. If the Sens are going to buck their losing skid, this is the time.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

We’re going to go with an alternate line and back the SENATORS (-1.5, +240) to win by at least 2 goals. Hogberg is auditioning for a role with the Sens beyond this season, while Howard is seemingly playing out his contract on a bad team.

The Senators are 23-20 against the spread overall and 11-12 on the road. The Wings are 18-26 ATS overall and 8-14 at home.

Over/Under (O/U)

Friday’s top play (maybe on the entire sports betting slate) is OVER 6.5 (+115). Neither of these goaltenders can be trusted to stop much, and the Sens are 9-1 against the Over/Under while the Wings are 5-5. Ottawa allowed at least 4 goals in each of its last five games and Detroit allows a league-high 3.80 goals per game.

Detroit Red Wings at Chicago Blackhawks odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Sunday’s Detroit Red Wings at Chicago Blackhawks sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

The Detroit Red Wings (10-29-3) visit the Chicago Blackhawks (18-18-6) Sunday at United Center for a 7:30 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Red Wings-Blackhawks odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup. This is the first meeting of the season between the two.

Detroit lost 4-1 at the Dallas Stars Friday and has dropped seven of eight, and 19 of 22.

Chicago had a three-game win streak snapped with a 7-5 loss at the Vancouver Canucks Thursday.

Red Wings at Blackhawks: Projected starting goalies

Jimmy Howard vs. Corey Crawford

Howard is 2-13-1 with a 4.11 goals against average (GAA) and an .884 save percentage. Howard has lost his last nine starts (0-8-1), allowing 35 goals on 246 shots for a .858 SV%. He is 1-5-1 on the road with a 4.67 GAA.

Crawford is 6-11-2 with a 3.20 GAA and .905 SV%. Crawford, who is on a four-game losing streak, was pulled in the second period of his last start after yielding four goals on 20 shots in a 7-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils Dec. 23.

Red Wings at Blackhawks: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated Sunday at 11 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Blackhawks 5, Red Wings 2

Moneyline (ML)

PASS. The Blackhawks (-208) are too chalky and not worth the risk of laying that kind of juice on a .500 team. The Red Wings (+170) are playing so bad, there’s no bet here either.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (PL/ATS)

The BLACKHAWKS (-1.5, +125) are the STRONGEST PLAY. They’re 23-19 vs. the PL overall and 9-9-3 straight up at home. The Red Wings (+1.5, -154) are 17-25 vs. the PL overall and 4-15-2 SU on the road.

New to sports betting? Every $1 wagered on the Blackhawks PL will profit $1.25 if they win by 2 or more goals.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 6.5 (+125) is worth a small wager, especially if Howard starts in goal for the Red Wings. His 4.11 GAA ranks last among all goalies. While both offenses average less than 3 goals per game – Chicago is 20th with 2.88 GPG and Detroit last at 2.14 – the defenses are in the top third of goals allowed. Detroit gives up an NHL-most 3.81 per game, and Chicago is 10th at 3.21.

Detroit Red Wings at Dallas Stars odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Friday’s Detroit Red Wings at Dallas Stars sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Detroit Red Wings (10-28-3) visit the Dallas Stars (23-14-4) at American Airlines Center for an 8:30 p.m. ET puck drop Friday. We analyze the Red Wings-Stars sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Red Wings at Stars: Projected starting goalies

Jonathan Bernier vs. Anton Khudobin

Bernier is coming off a 34-save shutout against the San Jose Sharks Tuesday. He is 8-11-2 on the year with a .905 save percentage and 3.05 goals against average.

Khudobin enters on a personal three-game winning streak and he draws the start in the easier matchup for the hosts. He is 9-5-1 on the year with a .929 SV% and 2.29 GAA.

Red Wings at Stars: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 11:30 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Stars 6, Red Wings 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Stars (-334) win this game nearly 77% of the time according to the implied odds. They’re the better team up-and-down the ice and especially in the crease. Dallas is 14-6-2 at home this year and enters on a three-game winning streak, including the 4-2 victory over the Nashville Predators in the Winter Classic on New Year’s Day. The Stars rank second in the NHL with just 103 goals allowed on the year.

The Red Wings (+260) are unattractive in just about every way, and aren’t even worth a second thought. They’re last in the league with just 23 points and they’ve won just four of 20 road games. They’re coming off a 2-0 win over the Sharks Tuesday, but they’ve won two straight games just thrice all year. It’s a hard PASS on the chalky number for the hosts.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Stars to win in regulation, overtime or a shootout returns a profit of $3.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Use your savings from passing on the moneyline bet to hammer the STARS (-1.5, -106) on the spread where they’ll need to win by at least two goals. Seventeen of the Red Wings’ 28 losses have been a margin of at least three goals. The Stars are 22-19 against the spread for the year while the Wings are just 17-24.

Over/Under (O/U)

Play the OVER 5.5 (+100) and expect Dallas to take care of all six goals on its own. One or two late goals by Detroit would be nice, but shouldn’t be a necessity as the Stars light up Bernier.

Detroit Red Wings at Tampa Bay Lightning odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Sunday’s Detroit Red Wings at Tampa Bay Lightning sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Tampa Bay Lightning (19-13-4) host the Detroit Red Wings (9-27-3) Sunday at Amalie Arena for a 7 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Red Wings-Lightning sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Red Wings at Lightning: Projected starting goalies

Jonathan Bernier vs. Curtis McElhinney

Bernier is expected to make his first start since Dec. 17, when he allowed four goals on 38 shots in a home loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. He is 7-10-2 on the season with a .897 save percentage and 3.24 goals against average.

McElhinney enters on a personal three-game losing streak and has dropped to 3-4-2. He has a .903 SV% and 3.45 GAA.

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 12:45 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Lightning 4, Red Wings 1

Moneyline (ML)

The Lightning (-400) pulled off a come-from-behind win over the Montreal Canadiens Saturday in which they fell down 2-0 early in the first period. They’ve now won two in a row and are 11-7-2 at home.

Meanwhile, the Red Wings (+310) are losers of five straight and 17 of their last 19. They’re 4-13-2 on the road and have a league-worst minus-69 goal differential.

The Red Wings are never worth a wager, even at inflated numbers, but there’s no value in the chalk of the Lightning. A $10 bet returns a profit of just $2.50 for the Lightning to win outright in regulation, overtime or a shootout.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The LIGHTNING (-1.5, -139) are still a little expensive on the spread, where they’ll need to win by at least 2 goals. The Lightning are just 13-23 ATS overall and 7-13 at home, but the Red Wings are just 5-24 on the puck line and last or near last in nearly all metrics (Corsi, scoring chances, PDO). All but one of the Red Wings’ last five losses was by at least 2 goals.

A $10 bet on the Lightning to win by at least 2 goals returns a profit of $7.19.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the UNDER 6.5 (-133) with both teams on the second half of a back-to-back and the Red Wings struggling to fulfill their required share of the goal contributions. Both teams hit the Over in six of their last 10 games, but the Red Wings have scored 3 or fewer goals in five of their last six games.

Former Notre Dame Defenseman to Make NHL Debut

Gross graduated from Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business as a management consulting major.

When the Phoenix Coyotes take on the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday night Notre Dame will see it’s 36th former hockey player to skate in the NHL.

Jordan Gross, a defenseman for Notre Dame from 2014 to 2018 will make his debut for the Coyotes, becoming the 11th for Fighting Irish to play in the NHL this season as he joins Anders Bjork (Boston Bruins), Ian Cole (Colorado Avalanche), Dennis Gilbert (Chicago Blackhawks), Hinostroza (Arizona Coyotes), Anders Lee (New York Islanders), Kyle Palmieri (New Jersey Devils), Andrew Peeke (Arizona Coyotes), Bryan Rust (Pittsburgh Penguins), Riley Sheahan (Edmonton Oilers) and T.J. Tynan (Colorado Avalanche).

A First Team All-Big Ten selection as a senior, he scored 10 goals and added 20 assists for 30 points as a senior. His 30 points ranked 12th among defensemen. His 146 shots on goal led all defensemen, as did his 3.58 shots on goal per game. He had a goal and two assists in Notre Dame’s 5-4 win over Omaha (Oct. 27), to become the 53rd player in program history to reach 100 career points.

Gross graduated from Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business as a management consulting major.

Arizona Coyotes at Detroit Red Wings odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Sunday’s Arizona Coyotes at Detroit Red Wings sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Arizona Coyotes (20-13-4) visit the Detroit Red Wings (9-25-3) at Little Caesar’s Arena Sunday at 7 p.m. ET. We analyze the Coyotes-Red Wings odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Coyotes at Red Wings: Projected starting goalies

Antti Raanta vs. Jimmy Howard

Raanta owns a 2.72 goals against average and .919 save percentage over 13 outings (12 starts). The veteran netminder has been consistent and solid, but unspectacular on the road. His even-strength SV% is .939, and he has a history of getting better as the season wears on.

Howard has struggled his way to a 3.94 GAA and .887 SV% for a Red Wings club which ranks 31st in goals allowed per game (3.89). Howard has been on a conditioning stint in the AHL while recovering from a groin injury which has kept him out of action since November 27.

Prediction

Arizona 4, Detroit 2

Moneyline (ML)

Take advantage of your fellow bettors’ unwillingness to go deep into 200-level prices, even when 300-something is warranted. A play on ARIZONA (-250) bakes in plenty of value.

The ‘Yotes went 3-1 on their last multi-game road trip, and the team is 7-3 over its last 10 away from the desert. Recent missteps (3-4 record since Dec. 6) are not backed up by puck possession analytics. Arizona does a fine job getting to the gritty, high-percentage area of the slot, and that game-systemic advantage hasn’t made its way into recent box scores.

Arizona has the fewest penalty minutes in the NHL, and it’s a factor mitigating recent gains made by the Detroit power play (7 for their last 23). This is a Red Wings club all-too-routinely posting sub-40% Corsi shares while going 2-13-2 over its last 17 games.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Arizona is 14-5 against the puck line on the road. Detroit is 6-13 against the half-number when skating at home. The Wings’ last 11 losses have all been by multiple scores. The ‘Yotes are on the front end of a road trip, with plenty of standings incentive for wanting to game-control whatever sheet of ice they’re on.

Back ARIZONA (-1.5, +115) to win by at least 2 goals on a smaller, complement play to the moneyline.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Coyotes to win by at least 2 goals returns a profit of $11.50. The same wager on the moneyline returns $4 in profit.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS on the projected total of 5.5 (Over: -115, Under: -106). The Howard return and health status plays more here than in the sides.

Detroit Red Wings at Toronto Maple Leafs odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Detroit Red Wings at Toronto Maple Leafs sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Detroit Red Wings (9-24-3) and Toronto Maple Leafs (18-14-4) lock horns at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto at 7 p.m. ET Saturday. We analyze the Red Wings-Maple Leafs sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

Red Wings at Maple Leafs: Projected starting goalies

Jonathan Bernier vs. Michael Hutchinson

Bernier carries a 7-10-2 record, 3.26 goals against average and .896 save percentage into action. He allowed three goals on 40 shots in a 6-0 loss against the Maple Leafs at Little Caesars Arena back on Nov. 27.

Hutchinson carries an 0-5-1 record, 4.55 GAA and .876 save percentage into action in this one. He has allowed four or more goals in each of his past five appearances, and all six of his starts this season.

Prediction

Red Wings 5, Maple Leafs 4

Moneyline (ML)

The RED WINGS (+225) are worth a roll of the dice on the road, as the Maple Leafs (-286) haven’t had a lot of success with Hutchinson in the crease. You certainly cannot trust the home side with their winless backup.

New to sports betting? Every $10 wagered for the Red Wings to win in regulation, overtime or a shootout would profit $22.50 if they do so.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The RED WINGS (+1.5, +100) are still offering plus-money on the puck line if you’re not quite feeling the last-place team and want a little insurance in the event of a loss. They’ll just need to stay within 1 goal.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 6.5 (+120) is a big number, but with Hutchinson in between the pipes, it’s the play. The Over is 5-2 in the past seven meetings in this series, and 19-6-1 in Toronto’s past 26 against Eastern Conference foes.

Los Angeles Kings at Detroit Red Wings odds, picks and best bets

Analyzing Sunday’s Los Angeles Kings at Detroit Red Wings betting odds, with NHL matchup analysis and picks.

The Detroit Red Wings (9-22-3) host the Los Angeles Kings (13-18-3) Sunday at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, MI in a battle of cellar dwellers. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. We analyze the Red Wings-Kings odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Kings at Red Wings: Projected starting goalies

Jack Campbell vs. Eric Comrie

Campbell has a 2.99 goals against average and .891 save percentage on the season through 11 starts. His last game came Dec. 7 in a loss to the Flames, in which he allowed 4 goals on 30 shots.

Comrie is making his second start of the year. It hasn’t been pretty in two appearances, as he sports a 4.40 GAA and .853 SV% over 68 minutes of play. He was lit up for 5 goals by the Winnipeg Jets Dec. 10, stopping just 25 of 30 shots in the loss.

Kings at Red Wings: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 11 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Detroit 3, Los Angeles 2

Moneyline (ML)

The RED WINGS (+105) have won two in a row after a 12-game losing skid; they won on the road 2-1 vs. the Montreal Canadiens Saturday. Detroit is 2-8-0 over its last 10 games. Meanwhile, the Kings (-129) lost 5-4 in a shootout against the Pittsburgh Penguins Saturday. They’re 4-5-1 over their last 10 games.

Detroit is playing with a bit of desperation and Campbell is far from elite. Look for the Wings to push their winning streak to three games with the Kings likely tired on a road back-to-back that went to extra time the day before.

New to sports betting, a $10 wager on Detroit to win outright returns a $10.50 profit with a victory.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Kings are 8-9 ATS on the road (17-17 overall), while the Red Wings are just 6-11 ATS at home and 14-20 overall. While I like the Red Wings (+1.5, -278) to cover, the tax is too darn high. PASS. A $10 wager here pays just $3.60 profit; play the ML instead, where there’s a better return.

Over/Under (O/U)

In eight of the last 10 games, Detroit has scored two or less goals. The Kings have scored two or more goals in seven games over the same span. Detroit is last in the league in goals scored, averaging 2.2 per game. The Kings aren’t much better, ranking 28th with 2.5 goals per game.

With a line of 4.5, all it takes is five combined goals against two subpar goaltenders to hit the Over. You’ll likely sweat this until the third, but the OVER 4.5 (-209) is the play for a small-unit bet due to the higher juice.
