Week 14 Studs and Duds: T.J. Hockenson leads team in receptions, finds end zone

Identifying the Studs and Duds from the Detroit Lions Week 14loss to the conference-leading Green Bay Packers.

In the second game of the Darell Bevell era for the Detroit Lions, the team was not able to pull off a win as they had in Chicago the week before.

This time around, the Lions struggled to stop the now 10-3 Green Bay Packers from possessing the football and taking control of the entire game.

There’s plenty of players who struggled throughout but don’t let the loss take away from a few players who did manage to put on good performances.

Stud: T.J. Hockenson

Hockenson has become Stafford’s safety net this season. He opened up the game with a one-yard reception for a touchdown and later contributed a few first downs for Detroit. He would end the day with a team leading six catches for 43 yards and a score.

Dud: Oday Aboushi

Aboushi was getting bullied by Green Bay defensive lineman Dean Lowry, who easily shoved the eight-year veteran offensive guard to the ground to get a sack on Matthew Stafford.

Tack on his second-quarter false start, and it’s safe to say that Aboushi was the weak link of the offensive line unit in this game.

Stud: Mohamed Sanu

The veteran wide receiver was brought up from the practice squad three weeks ago and has been a capable replacement for Kenny Golladay.

On the Lions’ first offensive drive, Sanu hauled in two receptions for 37 yards, helping the team move quickly down the field for a T.J. Hockenson score.

Dud: Duron Harmon

Harmon, who has been Detroit’s best safety this season, certainly didn’t look the part against Green Bay.

On the Packers’ first touchdown of the game, Harmon whiffed on a tackle and failed to bring down Davante Adams. He later whiffed on another pass to Adams on Green Bay’s following drive.

Stud: “Dagger Time”

The mantra that was toted prior to the season beginning has finally made its way to the gridiron.

The concept of “dagger time” is that the Lions needed to play more aggressively in critical times of the game, something they prepared for in two-minute and red-zone drills at practice. Once they took the field in week one, “dagger time” was nowhere to be found.

With Bevell now calling the shots in Detroit, the team on both offense and defense has put on much stronger performances. The best example of this was the defense forcing a punt near the end of the first half to give the Lions back the ball with hopes of taking the lead. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to capitalize, but it’s clear that “dagger time” is working under Bevell and his coaching style.

Dud: The pass rush

Zero sacks. One quarterback hit.

The Lions desperately need Everson Griffen and Trey Flowers back on the active roster.

Stud: Jamal Agnew

Agnew’s 75-yard kick return was his best of the season and gave the Lions the chance to come back late in the fourth quarter. The offense wasn’t able to capitalize on it, but Agnew did his job and did it well. The gadget player also had one rush for 11 yards and one reception for four yards.

Dud: Jahlani Tavai

Tavai just isn’t the same player that we saw last season.

Playing from the inside linebacker position, Tavai looked very lethargic in coverage. This was most clear on the Robert Tonyan touchdown in the fourth quarter, where Tavai was in a jog a few steps behind the former Lions tight end.

On what felt like just about every big play that Green Bay made, Tavai always seemed to be there. Unfortunately, just not in a way that helped Detroit.

Dud: Matt Nelson

The former college defensive lineman had a fairly good day overall, but two bad reps are all anyone will remember. Nelson allowed a sack from Rashan Gary in the first half, and then committed a holding penalty that negated a late-game rushing touchdown from Chase Daniel.

Vikings’ playoff odds take huge dip after loss to Bucs

The Vikings lost 26-14 against the Bucs in Tampa Bay to fall to 6-7 on the season.

The Vikings lost 26-14 against the Bucs in Tampa Bay to fall to 6-7 on the season.

A win would have boosted the team’s playoff odds to over 70%. However, with the loss and a win from the Cardinals over the Giants, the Vikings now find themselves out of the playoff picture and with just a 16% chance to make the playoffs per FiveThirtyEight.

The clearest route for the Vikings to make the playoffs is to win out against the Bears at home and against the Saints and Lions on the road. With that, the Cardinals would have to lose in Week 17 against the Rams. That would clinch a berth for the Vikings.

The loss to the Bucs was certainly disappointing, especially considering how the Vikings started the game.

If the Packers beat the Lions on Sunday afternoon, Green Bay will clinch the NFC North for the second-straight season.

Detroit Lions Week 14 inactives: D’Andre Swift is ACTIVE

The Detroit Lions have declared their game-day inactives for their Week 14 matchup with the Green Bay Packers.

The Detroit Lions have declared their game-day inactives for their Week 14 matchup with the Green Bay Packers.

After placing Everson Griffen on the COVID-19 list, the Lions roster was reduced to 52-players. But, in addition to elevating OT Dan Skipper and DE Kareem Martin, the Lions used an elevation replacement option to also elevate S Bobby Price, bringing the roster up to 55-players.

Additionally, because the Lions kept eight offensive linemen on their active game-day roster, they are now eligible to expand their roster from 46- to 48-players, meaning they need to declare seven of their 55-players inactive.

Here are those seven players.

Lions inactives list

  • WR Kenny Golladay (hip) — Ruled OUT
  • RT Tyrell Crosby (ankle) — Ruled OUT
  • CB Jeff Okudah (shoulder) — Ruled OUT
  • S C.J. Moore (ankle) — was questionable entering this game
  • QB David Blough
  • RB Jonathan Williams
  • DT Frank Herron

When Golladay was out last week the Lions turned to Mohamad Sanu as their starting WR-X position. Rookie Quintez Cephus has proven he deserves more looks and will likely push Sanu for time.

Crosby will be replaced at right tackle by Matt Nelson, and with the practice squad elevation of Dan Skipper on Saturday, he and Joe Dahl will be the only remaining options if the Lions suffer another injury at offensive tackle.

No Okudah means the Lions will enter today’s game with just four corners: Amani Oruwariye, Justin Coleman, and Darryl Roberts will start, while Mike Ford will most likely be in line for plenty of snaps as a fourth option.

[lawrence-related id=56042]

Moore was questionable entering this game and he will be replaced on special teams by Price — who as noted above, was elevated for this game.

With Stafford’s thumb not bothering him noticeably, and Chase Daniel healthy, the Lions did not need to keep Blough active on the roster this week.

With D’Andre Swift healthy, Williams was not needed, and the Lions will roll with three running backs: Swift, Adrian Peterson, and Kerryon Johnson

Similarly, with Ds’Shawn Hand healthy, the Lions had four interior defensive linemen healthy — Hand, John Penisini, Nick Williams, and Kevin Strong — and Herron was deemed inactive.

Packers’ inactive list

  • QB Jordan Love
  • CB Ka’dar Hollman
  • LB Jonathan Garvin
  • G Simon Stepaniak — ruled OUT
  • WR Malik Taylor
  • TE Jace Sternberger — ruled OUT

Lions Week 14 rookie report: D’Andre Swift’s on track to return to action

Examining the Detroit Lions rookie’s roles as they prepare to take on the Green Bay Packers in Week 14.

Riding high after a win against the Chicago Bears last weekend, the Detroit Lions will be hosting the Green Bay Packers in another NFC North matchup.

With Darrell Bevell taking the reigns as the interim head coach, the Lions have seen some optimistic changes to their playbook and how players are utilized on the field.

With a second week to learn more from Bevell and a tough divisional matchup ahead of them, what is to be expected from Detroit’s 2020 rookie class?

CB Jeff Okudah

The 2020 season has not been kind to the Lions’ first-round pick.

Okudah missed the first game of the season because of an injury. Once he was healthy, his first career matchups were against some of the league’s top talents. He has had more than his fair share of rookie mistakes, and now it seems his debut year is over as he prepares for his upcoming surgery and heads to the injured reserve list.

Expect Amani Oruwariye and Darryl Roberts to be Detroit’s outside cornerbacks while Justin Coleman mans the slot.

RB D’Andre Swift

After missing the last two games due to a concussion and issues with migraines, it appears Detroit’s up-and-coming rookie running back will make his return.

Assuming he does play, Swift may need some time to reacclimate to the game. Adrian Peterson and Kerryon Johnson have been sharing snaps in the Lions backfield, with Peterson doing most of the work on the ground and Johnson playing more as a receiver.

If Swift returns, he could immediately fill both of those roles for Detroit’s offense. The rookie has 606 scrimmage yards and six touchdowns on the season. If the Lions want to stay competitive in this matchup, they better hope that Swift can play.

OL Jonah Jackson and Logan Stenberg

Not much has changed for the roles of either rookie offensive lineman in recent weeks.

Jackson struggled a little more than usual last week against Chicago, but was luckily bailed out by some Bears defensive penalties. The rookie out of Ohio State will still get the start at left guard. He has allowed four sacks on the season and has committed the same number of penalties.

Stenberg took the field for the first time in his pro career last week, albeit just for three special teams snaps. The fourth-round pick will continue to serve as a reserve offensive lineman and should be active for the game as the Lions’ eighth lineman.

WR Quintez Cephus

Filling in for Kenny Golladay, rookie Quintez Cephus had quite the showing in Chicago. Cephus had the best game of his young career with two receptions for 63 yards and one very impressive touchdown.

He took the field for a little less than half of the team’s offensive snaps last weekend and that isn’t expected to change this week. The rookie should still be considered as Detroit’s second option behind Marvin Jones and will split some snaps with Mohamed Sanu as well.

DL John Penisini

After taking over as Detroit’s starting nose tackle, Penisini came through for the defense with three tackles as well as an important fumble recovery late in the game against Chicago.

Unfortunately, the sixth-round rookie’s status for the Packers game is questionable as he deals with a shoulder injury he suffered late in the week during practice.

If he can’t play, the Lions have no other rostered nose tackles and will have to try and utilize Kevin Strong and Frank Herron in the attempts to stop Aaron Jones and the rest of Green Bay’s rushing attack.

TE Hunter Bryant

Bryant saw the field for the first time in his NFL career last weekend and is expected to play again this week. The undrafted rookie took a mere 11 snaps in that game – five on offense and the rest on special teams.

Bryant still sits behind T.J. Hockenson and Jesse James on the depth chart, so don’t expect too much from the rookie against Green Bay.

S Bobby Price

Another undrafted rookie to make his NFL debut against Chicago, Price was given a substantial role on special teams right away. The safety, who was just elevated from the practice squad, saw the field for almost two-thirds of the Lions’ special teams snaps and made one tackle.

With fellow safety and core special teamer C.J. Moore questionable to play, Price may find himself in that role once again.

Experts give Lions little chance of upsetting the Packers in Week 14

The Detroit Lions face off against the Green Bay Packers at home this week and virtually no one is giving them a shot to pull off the upset.

In their second division battle in a row, the Detroit Lions (5-7) will look to play spoiler to the Green Bay Packers (9-3), who can clinch a playoff berth with a win this week.

The Packers have won their last three matchups with the Lions, including the Week 2 matchup earlier this season, where the Packers walloped the Lions 42-21. The Lions had no answers for Aaron Jones in that game, as he bullied his way to 236 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns.

Last week, the Lions rallied behind interim head coach Darell Bevell pulling off a come behind victory and handing the Bears their sixth straight loss. The offense looked more up-tempo and brought an aggressive style approach that had been missing for a while. Even with the limitations on defense, they still made the necessary stops and key adjustments that helped turn the tide last week.

The Packers walked away with a victory of their own last week, beating the Philadelphia Eagles 30-16 behind Aaron Rodger’s three-touchdown performance. With a secured playoff berth on the line, the Packers will be looking to put this one away early and turn their focus to the postseason.

With the type of seasons each team is having, it is no surprise the experts have almost unanimous in their selections this week. According to NFL Pickwatch, 98-percent of the experts are favoring the Packers in the Week 14 division battle.

The Lions have an uphill battle this week against a very tough opponent, but if they can turn this game into be a high-scoring affair, it could be a very intriguing matchup. It will be tough for the Lions, no doubt about that, but if they play disciplined football and follow the key areas in this week’s Honolulu Blueprint, they could pull off a major upset.

Only 11% of experts think Vikings will beat Bucs

If the Vikings win, their playoff percentage would boost to 71%.

The 6-6 Vikings travel to play the 7-5 Bucs in Tampa Bay on Sunday.

With both teams barely holding onto wild card spots in the NFC, this game has plenty of playoff implications.

Tampa Bay opened the game as 6.5-point favorites, and per NFLPickWatch, 89% of experts think the Bucs will beat the Vikings.

A win for the Vikings would boost their playoff percentage from 40% to 71%. A loss would lower it to 23%.

To round out the NFC North, 23% of experts have the Bears beating the Texans and 97% of experts have the Packers beating the Lions.

Report: Lions’ Jeff Okudah headed for surgery, then IR next week

Dave Birkett of the Free Press is reporting that rookie corner Jeff Okudah is headed for groin surgery and will be placed on injured reserve next week.

Dave Birkett of the Free Press is reporting that rookie corner Jeff Okudah is headed for groin surgery and will be placed on injured reserve next week.

Okudah has been dealing with a nagging groin injury since his time at Ohio State and it has popped up a few times this season, limiting his availability. Birkett reported in his piece that Okudah’s groin has “slowly gotten worse this season” and that surgery now would help his availability for the 2021 offseason.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport followed up Birkett’s report by confirming his statements, “This is true. The No. 3 pick will have surgery Tuesday, source confirmed, in a core muscle procedure. He’ll be full strength for the offseason program with a new coach and GM.”

It’s been an up and down season for the rookie. He has flashed at times — especially in the run game — but overall most fans have come away disappointed. If hard to fault that point of view, but it is worth noting that rookie corners rarely succeed in their first years, and Okudah is a highly intelligent player who is meticulous in his work ethic, so hopefully, a reset physically will put him in the best position possible to contribute next year.

Detroit Lions elevate 3 practice squad players for their Week 14 game against the Packers

The Detroit Lions have elevated three members of their practice squad for their Week 14 matchup with the Green Bay Packers: Offensive tackle Dan Skipper, defensive end Kareem Martin, and safety/gunner Bobby Price.

The Detroit Lions have elevated three members of their practice squad for their Week 14 matchup with the Green Bay Packers: Offensive tackle Dan Skipper, defensive end Kareem Martin, and safety/gunner Bobby Price.

Typically, the Lions would only be able to elevate two players under the standard elevation addendum, but with Everson Griffen being placed on the COVID-19 list, the Lions are able to elevate a third player as a replacement.

With Tyrell Crosby being ruled out and Hal Vaitai on injured reserve, the Lions have turned to Matt Nelson at right tackle. With Joe Dahl as the only remaining player with tackle experience on the active roster, Skipper is being elevated as insurance against any further injuries at the position.

With a plethora of injuries amongst the Lions EDGE rushers, Martin is being called up for depth. While Romeo Okwara is healthy, the Lions are down Trey Flowers (IR), Griffen (COVID-19), and Julian Okwara (IR).

When the Lions deploy four down defensive lineman, they will most likely hope to turn to Da’Shawn Hand and/or Austin Bryant opposite Okwara, with Martin potentially being the fourth option. But both Hand and Bryant are listed as questionable this week and neither has played in three games, meaning Martin could find himself on the field fairly quickly.

Because of this uncertainty, the Lions may rely on their linebackers to fill an EDGE role and that would mean leaning on Jahlani Tavai, Christian Jones, and Reggie Ragland at the JACK linebacker role more.

Price was elevated last week and played on 19 special teams snaps, including as a starting gunner. With C.J. Moore questionable after injuring his ankle last week, Price should help soften Moore’s workload.
