Film review: Lions Graham Glasgow played his worst game of the season against the Bills

Film review: Lions Graham Glasgow played his worst game of the season against the Bills

Coming off the best season of his career, it looked like Graham Glasgow really found his groove as he returned to Detroit. He played so well last season that the Lions gave him a three-year contract extension worth $20 million dollars, that included $9.5 million guaranteed.

Last season, he played almost 1200 snaps (highest in his career) and his performance earned an overall grade of 75.1 from Pro Football Focus (PFF). In pass protection, Glasgow allowed 46 pressures, 35 hurries, eight QB hits, and three sacks in 2023.

Moving onto 2024, the Lions signed guard Kevin Zeitler and that forced Glasgow to move to left guard. Unfortunately, this move has been less than ideal for Glasgow. Up to this point in the season, his blocking grades are way down from where they were a season ago.

According to PFF, Glasgow has earned a run blocking grade of 56.2, pass blocking grade of 54.5 and a 55.9 overall grade. Through 941 offensive snaps played, he’s already given up 33 pressures, seven QB hits and four sacks. Meanwhile, he earned the lowest offensive grade for any Lions player on offense against the Bills. His 34.3 overall grade against Buffalo was his lowest grade on the season. Let’s dive into some film and see what some of the issues were for Glasgow in week 15!

Starting with the first play that stands out on tape is this one between Graham Glasgow and Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver. Looking at the play above, you’ll see the Lions coming out of an empty formation. Once the ball is snapped, you’ll see Glasgow getting out of his stance at left guard.

Right out of his stance, his base looks a bit wide but furthermore, his pad level is far too high. Especially when playing against a defensive lineman with the blend and power that Ed Oliver possesses. Revealing too much of his chest, Glasgow starts getting blown off the ball.

From there, he’s never able to regain control or anchor against this bullrush from Oliver. This forces Goff to get sacked and ultimately, he fumbles the football in the process. The more I look at this rep, the more concerned I get with the right knee of Glasgow especially when seeing him sit out of practice all week with a knee injury.

Moving to a more positive play, there’s still plenty of good technical work from Glasgow on tape. Looking at the play above, the Lions throw out of a shotgun formation that features TE Sam LaPorta being sent on an exit motion prior to the snap.

Once the ball is snapped, you’ll see Goff spin out of some pressure before resetting his feet and throwing a pass to WR Allen Robinson. Despite the pass being broken up, one thing worth watching is LG Graham Glasgow. You’ll see him slide to his right and in the process, he picks up the defensive tackle that is aligned as a zero shade over the center.

In the process, Glasgow hits the defender and as he looks to reset his hands, he executes a snatch-trap technique. This pulls the defender to the ground and it helps keep an additional defender away from the quarterback.

Bills DT Ed Oliver generated a season-high 10 pressures on 42 pass rush snaps against the Lions. That’s the most pressures in a game by a defensive tackle this season, per Next Gen Stats. Additionally, Oliver generated 7 of those pressures against Glasgow.

Overall, there’s no need to hit the panic button with Glasgow, but I would proceed with caution, especially since he’s popped up on the injury report with a knee injury this week. Certainly, he’s allowed a bad day at the office but his performance against the Bills is concerning.

Meanwhile, there’s been growing concern over the last month as Glasgow has been playing his worst football of the season. That’s significant as the Lions enter the most important 3-game stretch of their season. With him being a veteran player, there are reasons to believe he can turn it around. Unfortunately, if there aren’t improvements soon, the Lions could be turning to a new left guard sooner rather than later.

Lions vs Bills: Final injury report medical analysis plus injured reserve player update

Lions vs Bills: Final injury report medical analysis plus injured reserve player update on when some of those Lions might return

Coming into the season, the Detroit Lions offense was expected to be the strength of this team. That is even more so now with the offense in excellent health coupled with a defense riddled with injury. This past week, Dan Campbell acknowledged that the offense would shoulder more responsibility and to expect the aggressive 4th-down decisions to continue.

With Taylor Decker’s return after missing two games, the Lions offensive starting unit is fully intact and most key reserves are healthy as well. The offense will need to put up points to stay ahead of a high-powered Bills offense which boasts the leading MVP candidate, Josh Allen, and will feature the return of two impact pass catchers in Dalton Kincaid and Keon Coleman.

The Lions defensive line trended sharply upward during the week with DJ Reader, Levi Onwuzurike, Josh Paschal, and Alim McNeill all rapidly progressing to the point that they are definitively in. The linebacker unit took a surprise hit with Trevor Nowaske’s midweek concussion.

The Bills defense will have a banged-up secondary with a starting CB out and both starting safeties nursing injuries with questionable status.

DETROIT LIONS

Out – Trevor Nowaske LB, (UL NP NP)

This backup LB played 64% of snaps last game. Presumably he got a concussion in Wednesday’s practice which will force him to miss this game.

At LB, Jack Campbell played 100% of snaps last game and expect that to continue. Ezekiel Turner (34%), Kwon Alexander (34%), David Long (32%), Jamal Adams (16%), and Ben Niemann (2%) are candidates to fill the void.

In – Alim McNeill DT, concussion (FP FP FP)

See my initial injury report analysis for the full timeline of his concussion. There was also concern for a non-concussion head or jaw issue. Very good news that everything has resolved quickly.

In – Taylor Decker OT, knee (FP FP FP)

A suspected right MCL and right high or medial ankle sprain on November 24 forced him to miss two games. With his return, the entire offensive starters are intact. Dan Skipper, who filled in admirably at LT, will return to his normal role as jumbo TE and 9th-string WR.

In – DJ Reader DT, shoulder (NP LP FP)

Reader hurt his left shoulder on Thanksgiving in a manner that is concerning for a shoulder subluxation and missed one game. While a subluxation is still a possibility, his quick return gives hope that it was just a mild shoulder strain.

In – Levi Onwuzurike DT, hamstring (LP LP FP)

A left hamstring strain on Thanksgiving caused him to miss one game. Hamstrings can easily take multiple weeks so it’s good to see that this one was mild.

In – Josh Paschal DE, knee (LP FP FP)

A right knee injury on Thanksgiving caused him to miss one game. Video did not suggest anything too concerning.

Injured reserve list update

Returning soon:

  • Alex Anzalone, left forearm fracture – Expect his 21-day practice window to open early next week with a possible return to play in week 17 (49ers) or week 18 (Vikings).
  • Kalif Raymond, left foot – Expected by the start of the playoffs. His 21-day practice window should open after next week’s Bears game.

Uncertain but hopeful to return soon:

  • Ennis Rakestraw, hamstring – Eligible to return next week vs the Bears. Keep an eye on if his 21-day practice window opens early next week. If it doesn’t open next week, that implies he is at least three more weeks away.
  • Ifeatu Melifonwu, left finger – Same situation as Rakestraw. Eligible to return next week vs the Bears. Hope for his 21-day practice window to open early next week. If it doesn’t open next week, that implies he is at least three more weeks away.

Early playoffs at best:

  • Jalen Reeves-Maybin, neck – He is eligible to return anytime but has not had his 21-day practice window opened yet. This implies he is at least 3 weeks away. At this point, his earliest projected return would be in the playoffs. Dan Campbell on December 9 corroborated a multi-week timeline stating he’s “better… There’s a chance we could get him in a few weeks.” While there are no details about his neck injury, this update is reassuring that it isn’t anything overly serious.

Late playoffs at best:

  • Aidan Hutchinson, left tib/fib fracture – Expecting very limited action in the Super Bowl although Jay Glazer reported a few days ago that the NFC championship game is a possibility. Currently nine weeks from injury, the bone should be close to healed at this point. Hutchinson has significant expected atrophy in his legs so it all depends on how quickly rehab goes.
  • John Cominsky, MCL surgery – Initial estimate projected a January return at best.
  • Derrick Barnes, right MCL/PCL surgery – Unlikely to be back.

Not expected to return:

  •  Malcolm Rodriguez, right ACL
  •  Marcus Davenport, left elbow
  •  Kyle Peko, left pec
  •  Mekhi Wingo, right knee

NFL IR PLAYOFF RULES

Lions can return as may IR players as they want in the playoffs as long as it doesn’t add up to more than 10 for the entire year (regular season + playoffs). So far, the Lions have returned three (Brodric Martin, Emmanuel Moseley, Ifeatu Melifonwu).

BUFFALO BILLS

Credit to @BangedUpBills for help with the analysis. The Bills had a walkthrough on Wednesday and a virtual meeting only on Thursday.

Out – Rasul Douglas CB, knee (NP NP NP)

This starting CB has not missed a game this year but will miss his first after hurting his left knee last game.

Questionable – Taylor Rapp S, neck/shoulder (NP NP LP)

Rapp hurt himself two weeks ago and was limited in the last game despite playing every snap. He may continue to try to play through but there are rumors that he will be out.

Questionable – Damar Hamlin S, back/ribs (FP NP LP)

This starting safety has played in every game this year logging close to 100% of snaps including 100% last game. Unless something significant happened during walkthroughs, he’ll likely play. He has 2 interceptions this year.

Questionable – Dalton Kincaid TE, knee (FP FP FP)

Expect this starting TE to play after missing the last three games due to a PCL. He is a very good receiver with 34 receptions for 356 yards this year.

Questionable – Dawuane Smoot DE, wrist (FP FP FP)

Smoot missed the last four games on IR with wrist surgery but is eligible to return on Sunday. He typically plays about 50% of snaps.

Questionable – Baylon Spector LB, calf (FP FP FP)

After missing four games on IR, Spector is eligible to return on Sunday. He has started multiple games this year.

Questionable – Casey Toohill DE, ribs (LP LP LP)

Toohill is a backup DE who plays about 25% of snaps.

Questionable – Quintin Morris TE, shoulder/groin (FP FP FP)

Morris is a backup who has 2 receptions for 16 yards this year.

Questionable – Tylan Grable OT, groin (FP FP FP)

Grable has not played since September 23.

In – Keon Coleman WR, wrist (FP FP FP)

This 2nd-round rookie will return after missing the last four games. He has 22 catches for 417 yards which is second on the team behind Khalil Shakir (735 yards).

Lions vs Packers: Final injury report medical analysis for the Week 14 matchup

Lions vs Packers: Final injury report medical analysis for the final injury report for both teams ahead of Week 14

The second (and not necessarily final) meeting of the Lions and Packers is an enormous game not just for 1st place in the division but also for the extremely valuable 1st seed bye in the NFC.

The NY Times playoff simulator estimates the Lions chances of the #1 seed at 84% with a win vs 40% with a loss. That’s a massive spread.

Defensive health is a problem for the Lions as they will be missing five defenders from last game: Levi Onwuzurike, DJ Reader, Josh Paschal, Malcolm Rodriguez (IR), and Mekhi Wingo (IR). In good news, they’ll be getting back Carlton Davis and Emmanuel Moseley.

On offense, the Lions starters are intact except for Taylor Decker who will miss a second straight game. Dan Skipper figures to start at LT again.

The Packers will be missing a couple key players in Jaire Alexander and Romeo Doubs. On the bright side, Jordan Love will be healthier than the first meeting when he had a groin injury.

DETROIT LIONS

Out – Taylor Decker LT, knee (NP NP NP)

A suspected right MCL and right high or medial ankle sprain from ten days ago will keep Decker out for a second straight game. He could be back for the next game which is eleven days away.

Out – DJ Reader DT, shoulder (NP NP NP)

Reader landed hard on an outstretched left shoulder which is concerning for a shoulder subluxation/dislocation. These can be played through with rehab but often require surgery down the line. There is no word on his diagnosis yet.

For reference, DeShon Elliott with the Lions in 2022 missed two games with a dislocated shoulder.

Brodric Martin, who only got two snaps in his first game back from IR on Thanksgiving, may see a big increase.

Out – Levi Onwuzurike DT, hamstring (NP NP NP)

Onwuzurike suffered a left hamstring strain on Thanksgiving. He has not been placed on IR suggesting it is not severe.

Out – Josh Paschal DE, knee (NP NP NP)

Paschal hurt his right knee last game. The diagnosis is uncertain but reports are that it isn’t serious.

In – Carlton Davis CB, knee (LP FP FP)

Davis had a non-contact injury to his left knee area ten days ago and missed Thanksgiving. I’m suspecting a mild strain to a muscle/tendon in his posterior knee. With him back, the secondary is at full-strength.

In – Emmanuel Moseley CB, hamstring (FP FP FP)

Moseley missed Thanksgiving due to a mild hamstring but is now ready to go. It will be interesting to see if he gets some snaps at CB for the first time this season.

IR STATUS UPDATE

Returning soon
• Alex Anzalone, left forearm fracture – Expect him around week 17-18.
• Kalif Raymond, left foot – Expect him by the start of the playoffs.

Uncertain return
• Jalen Reeves-Maybin, neck – He is eligible to return this game but did not have his 21-day practice window opened this week. This implies his timeline is at least three more weeks. A neck injury on IR is concerning for a spinal issue.
• Ennis Rakestraw, hamstring – Eligible to return December 22.
• Ifeatu Melifonwu, left finger – Eligible to return December 22.

Late playoffs at best
• Aidan Hutchinson, left tib/fib fracture – Expecting very limited action in Super Bowl.
• John Cominsky, MCL – Initial estimate projected a January return at earliest.
• Derrick Barnes, right MCL/PCL – Unlikely to be back.

Not expected to return
• Malcolm Rodriguez, right ACL
• Marcus Davenport, left elbow
• Kyle Peko, left pec
• Mekhi Wingo, right knee

GREEN BAY PACKERS

Out – Jaire Alexander CB (LP LP NP)

This starting CB missed the last 2 games with a PCL injury that has lingered for multiple weeks. He also missed the first meeting with the Lions. Resting until it’s fully healed is smart.

Out – Romeo Doubs WR (LP LP LP)

Doubs will miss his second straight game with a concussion. He has been productive with 34 catches for 483 yards this year which is second on the team behind Jayden Reed.

Out – Edgerrin Cooper LB, hamstring (NP NP NP)

This 2nd-round rookie missed the last two games with the hamstring. He has 2.5 sacks and 31 solo tackles on the year.

Out – Corey Ballentine CB, knee (NP NP NP)

Ballentine is mainly a special teams player.

In – Josh Jacobs RB, calf (LP LP LP)

Jacobs has 987 yards on the year which is 3rd most in the NFL, just ahead of Jahmyr Gibbs (973 yards).

In – Rasheed Walker OT, knee (LP LP FP)

This starting LT has played every game this year.

In – Josh Myers C, pec (LP LP FP)

Myers is the starting center and has played the last three games.

In – Elgton Jenkins OG, rest (NP LP LP)

Jenkins has started every game this year.

In – Isaiah McDuffie LB, ankle (LP LP FP)

McDuffie has started every game this year.

In – Colby Wooden DE, shoulder (LP LP LP)

Wooden is a part-time player along the defensive line with four solo tackles this year.

In – Kenny Clark NT, rest (LP LP FP)

In – John Fitzpatrick TE, back (LP FP FP)

Lions vs Packers: Monday injury report medical analysis

Lions vs Packers: Monday injury report medical analysis for both teams ahead of Thursday’s game at Ford Field

The Lions have an unusual workweek with two Thursday games in a row. That means yesterday (Sunday) aligns with a typical Wednesday, and today (Monday) is like a Thursday. An NP (no practice) today could be viewed as a typical NP on a Thursday which means leaning out.

My main concerns coming out of last game were Levi Onwuzurike, DJ Reader, Josh Paschal, and Malcom Rodriguez, and all showed up on today’s report except Rodriguez who was put on IR with a torn ACL. Here is my postgame report with injury videos of those four players.

There was a surprise after the game when Mekhi Wingo was placed on IR with a suspected right knee injury. Dan Campbell stated he is out for the season. We don’t have a diagnosis yet, but here is the video where Wingo may have been hurt:

DETROIT LIONS

Taylor Decker LT, knee (NP)

Dan Campbell stated on Sunday that he’s “day to day… it’ll come down to the wire whether he can go this week.” Video suggested a mild right MCL sprain and mild right high ankle sprain in the Colts game eight days ago. Last year, Decker missed two games with a similar-looking ankle sprain. He is officially listed with only a knee which suggests the knee is the more concerning issue.

Alim McNeill missed four games last year with an MCL that he played through during the game. I’m expecting Decker to be out for at least a second straight game. If he can return next week, that would be a good outcome.

DJ Reader DT, shoulder (NP)

Reader landed hard on an outstretched left shoulder last game which was concerning for a subluxation. He stayed in the game but was clearly bothered. A subluxation could be a long-term issue so hopefully, it’s just a mild shoulder sprain. There is no word on his diagnosis yet.

Levi Onwuzurike DT, hamstring (NP)

Onwuzurike suffered a left hamstring strain on Thanksgiving. He’s likely out this week given the propensity of hamstrings to get aggravated.

Josh Paschal DE, knee (NP)

Paschal took an awkward step and hurt his right knee on Thanksgiving. While the diagnosis is unknown, early signs are that the injury isn’t serious. It’s looking like he’s going to be out this week though.

Carlton Davis CB, knee (LP)

Davis had a non-contact injury to his left knee area eight days ago and missed Thanksgiving. I’m suspecting a mild strain to a muscle/tendon in his posterior knee. The LP is a very good sign that the injury is minor and he could be ready for Thursday.

Dan Campbell on Saturday stated: “He’s day to day, questionable”

Emmanuel Moseley CB, hamstring (FP)

Now we have the answer to the mystery pregame issue that caused Moseley to miss Thanksgiving. Good news that the hamstring is very minor and the FP means he’s on track to play vs the Packers.

PLAYERS ON IR

Returning soon:

  • Alex Anzalone, left forearm fracture – Expect him at the end of the regular season.
  • Kalif Raymond, left foot – Expect him towards the end of the regular season.

Uncertain return:

  • Jalen Reeves-Maybin, neck – Eligible to return this week.
  • Ennis Rakestraw, hamstring – Eligible to return December 22.
  • Ifeatu Melifonwu, left finger – Eligible to return December 22.

Late playoffs at best:

  • Aidan Hutchinson, left tib/fib fracture – Expecting very limited action in Super Bowl.
  • John Cominsky, MCL – Projected January return at earliest.
  • Derrick Barnes, right MCL/PCL – Unlikely to be back.

Not expected to return:

  • Malcolm Rodriguez, right ACL
  • Marcus Davenport, left elbow
  • Kyle Peko, left pec
  • Mekhi Wingo, right knee

GREEN BAY PACKERS

Jaire Alexander CB, knee (LP)

This starting CB has missed 2 games with the PCL injury that has lingered for multiple weeks. While he could probably use more time off, he may be playing vs the Lions.

Romeo Doubs WR, concussion (LP)

Doubs missed last game with a concussion. It looks like he’s progressing well through the protocol and will play. He has been productive with 34 catches for 483 yards this year which is second on the team behind Jayden Reed.

Edgerrin Cooper LB, hamstring (NP)

This 2nd-round rookie has missed the last two games with the hamstring and it looks like he’ll miss another. He has 2.5 sacks and 31 solo tackles on the year.

Corey Ballentine CB, knee (NP)

Ballentine is mainly a special teams player.

Elgton Jenkins OG, knee (NP)

Jenkins is a starting OG and has played in every game this year.

Here is the full Packers report:

Lions postgame injury and medical report following the Thanksgiving win over the Bears

Lions postgame injury and medical report following the Thanksgiving win over the Bears which saw several players leave with injuries

The Lions gutted out a Thanksgiving victory but not before a myriad of players went down with injuries. There will be no mini-bye respite yet as the next game is in seven days on Thursday Night Football vs the Packers.

The main concerns coming out of the game are Malcolm Rodriguez, Josh Paschal, Levi Onwuzurike, and DJ Reader. Unfortunately, all those are along the front-7 which was already a significantly weakened unit coming into the game.

In Dan Campbell’s postgame press conference, he did provide some injury updates which I will include below.

These are the injuries I saw on initial watch along with suspected diagnoses:

Emmanuel Moseley

Moseley was a surprise inactive with Carlton Davis out, Terrion Arnold recovering (groin), and Kindle Vildor struggling last game. Moseley had played 15 special teams snaps last game without obvious issue. Dan Campbell stated that he had “pregame something that popped up”. It doesn’t sound too serious or long-term, but his status for next game is uncertain.

Terrion Arnold – groin

Despite a full week of “estimated” FP’s, Arnold did not start the 1st drive although he started all the drives after that. As to why, Dan Campbell stated: “We just wanted to make sure he was good.” Arnold looked sharp throughout the game.

Josh Paschal – right knee, 2q 12:50

Paschal appeared to take a hard step onto his right leg and did not return to the game. No deformity of the knee was seen on video which is good. He went to the locker room but returned to the sideline which is reassuring. A bone bruise is a possibility as well as cartilage damage. He’ll get an MRI soon to evaluate.

Levi Onwuzurike – left hamstring, 2q 00:09

The video looked concerning for a knee sprain but it was officially listed as a hamstring. He did not return to the game. He’s likely out for at least next game. Severity will determine how long he is out.

Mekhi Wingo – mild right knee sprain, 3q

Wingo had a slight limp during the 1st drive of the 2nd half. There was no obvious injury on video. He showed up with a right knee brace on the 2nd drive of the half and was still playing at the 12:00 mark of the 4th quarter. Hoping that this is just a mild knee sprain.

DJ Reader – left shoulder, 4q 11:18

The mechanism here is concerning for a shoulder subluxation. Hopefully, it’s just a mild shoulder strain. Good news is that he did return to the game although there were points where you could see that the shoulder was still bothering him.

Dan Skipper – right back or ribs, 4q 9:14

Skipper took a direct blow to the right torso/flank area. That is the same area as the rib injury he suffered in week 3, and I’m suspecting an aggravation of that injury. He was able to finish out the game and I don’t have any concerns going forward.

Khalil Dorsey – right low ankle sprain, 4q 8:24

His right ankle inverted slightly causing him to come up limping. I’m suspecting a mild low ankle sprain. He was able to stay in the game and should be fine.

Malcolm Rodriguez – right knee, 4q 6:39

Dan Campbell stated: “Rodrigo is the [injury] that could be the worst.”

The video was not clear but there is a concern for a non-contact ACL. Hopefully, it’s just a mild knee sprain.

Kindle Vildor – left arm contusion, 4q 3:14

Vildor had his left arm banged in friendly fire. He left the game briefly but returned and should be fine.

Za’Darius Smith – cramps, 4q 3:06 & 1:08

Smith needed assistance a couple times at the end of the game. I’m suspecting simple cramps as he was given an electrolyte drink on the sideline immediately after the initial episode. He was able to finish out the game.

Brian Branch – left ankle, 4q 1:04

There was no video of the injury here, but after the play, he was grabbing at his left ankle. He stayed in the game and looked to be fine.

Lions vs Bears: Final injury report and medical analysis

Lions vs Bears: Final injury report and medical analysis for both teams on the Thanksgiving game in Week 13

For the Lions, the three main concerns coming out of last game were Kalif Raymond, Carlton Davis, and Taylor Decker. Unfortunately, all three will be out tomorrow. Fortunately, none are long-term season-enders.

Here’s to a happy and healthy Thanksgiving to the teams and fans!

DETROIT LIONS

Out – Carlton Davis CB, knee/thumb (NP NP NP)

The left thumb fracture happened two weeks ago and he has been playing through with a splint. The left knee injury happened last game. While it will keep him out, it doesn’t appear to be serious. Hopefully, it’s just a mild muscle/tendon strain to the posterior knee.

Out – Taylor Decker OT, knee (NP NP NP)

Decker appeared to suffer a mild right MCL sprain and mild right high ankle sprain last game. Even a mild version of these injuries can sideline a player for a couple weeks. While he will miss this Thursday, there is a decent chance he will be back next Thursday vs the Packers.

Questionable – Amon-Ra St. Brown WR, knee (NP LP FP)

St. Brown was grabbing at his right lateral distal knee and upper calf after a punt return in the 4th quarter last game. I’m suspecting just a mild contusion or muscle strain. He looked good finishing the last game and I expect him to play with minimal to no limitations.

Questionable – David Montgomery RB, shoulder (NP LP FP)

Montgomery left the last game with a suspected right shoulder contusion or AC joint sprain. The injury is mild and I expect no limitations on Thanksgiving.

In – DJ Reader DT, illness (NP FP FP)

Since his first appearance in week two, Reader has played in every game logging around 40-60% of snaps. Expect this percentage to continue tomorrow.

In – Terrion Arnold CB, groin (FP FP FP)

After missing one game with the groin, Arnold is back in. His health is important with Davis out.

NOTABLES

Out – Kalif Raymond

Raymond’s left foot came down hard last game which was concerning for a turf toe, Lisfranc, among other things. As reported by Ian Rapaport, Raymond was placed on IR today but is expected to be back for the playoffs at the latest. This is a pretty good outcome as it could have been much worse. He is eligible to return on December 30 vs the 49ers.

In – Emmanuel Moseley CB

After missing all year with a pec tear, Moseley saw his first action last game with 15 special teams snaps. With Davis out, Arnold recovering, and Kindle Vildor struggling, Moseley might see some defensive snaps vs the Bears.

Out – Ennis Rakestraw CB

Rakestraw was placed on IR last week with a hamstring.

OTHER LIONS ON IR

Aidan Hutchinson DE – starter
Alex Anzalone LB – starter
Derrick Barnes LB – starter
Marcus Davenport DE – starter
John Cominsky DE/DT
Kyle Peko DT
Jalen Reeves-Maybin LB
Ifeatu Melifonwu S

CHICAGO BEARS

Out – Elijah Hicks S, ankle (NP NP NP)

This safety started for five straight games before hurting his ankle. He’ll miss his second straight game.

Out – Ryan Bates LG, concussion (LP LP NP)

Bates got a concussion two weeks ago and will miss his 2nd straight game.

Lions vs Colts: Final injury report medical analysis

Lions vs Colts: Final injury report medical analysis for both teams ahead of their Week 12 matchup

One of the key matchups to watch will be the Lions weakened front-7 who just lost a starting LB vs the Colts weakened offensive line who will be missing three starters.

Over the week, the Lions had two new injuries to CB’s, but otherwise the active roster is healthy. The Colts had an upgrade to their RT who will play.

DETROIT LIONS

Out – Ennis Rakestraw CB (hamstring UL UL NP)

Rakestraw had a hamstring strain earlier this year and missed weeks two and three. It’s uncertain the severity of the current hamstring injury. We will know more depending on if he is placed on IR this weekend. He has otherwise been healthy after coming back from core muscle surgery about 11 months ago.

Questionable – Terrion Arnold CB (groin UL LP FP)

On Friday, Dan Campbell stated: “This morning he went in and got treatment, everything looks like it’s pretty good…. I’m not concerned right now but we’ll see how this day goes.” Those words are reassuring that Arnold does not have a significant injury. The FP strongly suggests he will play vs the Colts.

In the unlikely event that Arnold is out, expect to see Kindle Vildor who filled in when Carlton Davis left as a precaution last game.

Questionable – Emmanuel Moseley CB (pec FP FP FP)

Dan Campbell stated on Friday: “He’s trending the right way…. We see him doing a little bit of everything corner, nickel, safety.”

Moseley tore his pec in August and opened his 21-day practice window on November 6. The loss of Rakestraw slightly increases the chances Moseley will be active, but I still expect him to be out. If he’s indeed out, expect him to be moved to the active roster early next week with a chance to play on Thanksgiving.

In – Sam LaPorta TE (shoulder FP FP FP)

LaPorta missed one game with a left AC joint sprain. Dan Campbell on Friday stated: “He’s been good….he’s got fresh legs.” LaPorta is in with no expected limitations.

In – Carlton Davis CB (thumb FP FP FP)

Davis broke his left thumb last week in practice and played the entire first half vs the Jaguars in a thumb splint. He was pulled for the second half presumably as a precaution. The 3x FP is reassuring that the thumb is recovering fine.

In – Shane Zylstra TE (neck FP FP FP)

Zylstra left the last game late in the fourth quarter. Fortunately, the neck injury was not serious.

NOTABLES

Out – Jalen Reeves-Maybin

JRM was place on IR two weeks ago for an unspecified neck injury. His earliest eligible return is week 14 vs the Packers. Dan Campbell on Friday gave an update: “We’re hopeful [he’ll return], but we really don’t know at this time.”

Out – Alex Anzalone

This starting LB was placed on IR this week with a forearm fracture. He should be back in about seven weeks.

In – Brodric Martin

This is Martin’s first week on the active roster after a right knee hyperextension in preseason. Whether he is active on gameday will depend on where the coaches view him on the depth chart.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

Out – Bernhard Raimann LT (knee NP NP NP)

This starting LT will miss his second straight game.

Questionable – Tyquan Lewis DE (elbow FP FP FP)

Having just opened his practice window this week after missing seven games, I would not expect him to play.

In – Josh Downs WR (calf  UL FP FP)

Downs has the most receptions on the team with 50 for 567 yards. Only Alec Pierce has more receiving yardage with 590.

In – Braden Smith RT (foot/rest LP FP NP)

This starting RT has played every game this year and that will continue.

In – Michael Pittman WR (back FP FP FP)

Pittman has been dealing with a back issue for a few weeks but will play through. He has 35 catches for 412 yards on the year.

In – Kenny Moore CB (knee UL FP FP)

Moore plays almost 100% of defensive snaps.

In – DeForest Buckner DT (rest UL UL NP)

In – Zaire Franklin LB (rest UL UL NP)

In – Grover Stewart DT (rest UL UL NP)

NOTABLES

Out – Ryan Kelly C

This starting center has missed the last two games on IR.

Out – Will Fries RG

This starting RG has missed the last six games on IR.

Lions rule out Sam LaPorta for Week 11, Carlton Davis will play

Lions rule out TE Sam LaPorta for Week 11, while CB Carlton Davis is among the wounded who will play against the Jaguars

Detroit Lions ight end Sam LaPorta will not play against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 11. While that was expected ever since LaPorta suffered a shoulder injury in the Lions Week 10 win in Houston, it’s now official.

LaPorta was the only player on the active roster ruled out by the Lions for Sunday’s game. Reserve linebacker Ben Niemann is listed as questionable with an ankle injury that kept him from practicing on Friday.

Linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, cornerback Carlton Davis and left tackle Taylor Decker were all full participants in Friday’s practice and carry no injury designation for the visit from Jacksonville. Decker and Rodriguez missed last week’s games, while Davis popped up on the injury report with a hand issue.

All three players who are on injured reserve and designated for return remain out: Brodric Martin, Ifeatu Melifonwu and Emmanuel Moseley.

Lions post-Week 10 injury report and medical analysis

Lions post-Week 10 injury report and medical analysis after the win in Houston and getting ready for Week 11 and the Jaguars

I just returned from Houston where I voluntarily and eagerly overdosed on smoked brisket and Tex-Mex fajitas. Conversely, I involuntarily and begrudgingly overdosed on watching interceptions. At least the final result was a panacea.

Other notes from the stadium:

  • The Texans Battle Red helmets looked fantastic with the mirror red finish. The Lions silver helmets look much shinier and sparkly in person than they do on TV. With the Lions blueberries, this could have been a gorgeous color rush game but alas.
  • The roof was open for only the second time since 2021 which afforded a nice view of the moon and the fireworks. Fortunately, there was not even a hint of wind as that could easily have changed the outcome of the game with how tight Jake Bates’ field goals were to the uprights.
  • Credit to the Texans fans for being raucous all game and the Lions fans for bringing the heat in the fourth quarter. It was an excellent Sunday night atmosphere all the way around.

The game was overall a very healthy one for the Lions. Nothing live at the game jumped out to me from an injury standpoint. There were some minor concerns upon TV review, but the initial injury report is reassuring. The main concern was Sam LaPorta and there is early good news with him.

DETROIT LIONS

Sam LaPorta TE (NP) shoulder

LaPorta suffered a left AC joint sprain. Dan Campbell on Wednesday called it “day-to-day”. If this was the playoffs or a significant regular season game, I would fully expect him to play. Since it’s not, I expect him to miss at least this Sunday vs the Jaguars. There is no long-term concern though.

Taylor Decker OT (LP) shoulder

Decker stated he had a rotator cuff strain in practice last week. He has a history of shoulder labrum surgery in 2017 to the same side. Fortunately, the signs are that this is a minor, short-term issue. Dan Campbell on Wednesday stated “I feel better about having Decker this week… I think he’s going to be able to make it”.

Malcolm Rodriguez LB (LP) ankle

After two straight weeks of NP’s, upgrading to an LP on Wednesday is a good sign that he may be ready to go after missing two games.

Brodric Martin DT (FP) knee

After being on IR all year with a right knee hyperextension, Martin had his 21-day practice window opened on October 30. Expect him to be out for the Jaguars game and moved to the active roster early next week.

Ifeatu Melifonwu S (FP) ankle

Coming off IR with a suspected Achilles tendonitis, Melifonwu’s practice window opened November 6. He’s very likely out on Sunday but should be moved to the active roster before Thanksgiving.

Emmanuel Moseley CB (FP) pec

Recovering from his torn pec in August, Moseley’s 21-day practice window opened November 6. Like Melifonwu, he’s also likely out this Sunday but will move to the active roster before Thanksgiving.

Za’Darius Smith DE (FP) personal

Smith got a personal bye week after the trade and should be raring to go this week.

NOTABLES

Graham Glasgow in the first drive vs the Texans landed on his head and got up shaking his head. This was not shown on TV but I noticed it at the game. Fortunately, there has been no concussion diagnosis.

Carlton Davis in the 3rd quarter got kneed hard in the back of the right lower leg and limped off the field. This was likely just a contusion as he returned to play. Direct impact to that area can lead to a much worse outcome as we saw with Aidan Hutchinson’s tib/fib.

Alim McNeill appeared to be having right TMJ (temporomandibular joint) pain in the 3rd quarter. I reviewed video of the play as well as multiple previous plays of his and didn’t see any trauma to that area. Possibly, he just bit down hard and injured that joint. He was able to return to the game and should be fine going forward. Most TMJ pains will resolve on their own without significant treatment. Injecting the joint is an option to relieve pain and inflammation.

Terrion Arnold, on the Lions final defensive play, had his right ankle area banged a couple times which left him limping off the field. Good to see him unlisted which means it’s likely just a contusion.

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

Trevor Lawrence QB (NP) left shoulder

Lawrence missed last game with a non-throwing AC joint sprain and will also miss the Lions game. Mac Jones was 14/22 for 111 yards last game vs the Vikings.

Tank Bigsby RB (NP) ankle

Bigsby is the Jaguars #1 RB this year with 519 yards. He has been having an ankle issue the past 2-3 weeks and aggravated it last game. With an NP, there is a good chance he’ll get some time off which would mean Travis Etienne Jr. (298 yards) likely takes the bulk of the carries.

Brian Thomas WR (LP) chest

Thomas, the Jaguars #1 WR, hurt his ribs two weeks ago but hasn’t missed a game. Expect him to play on Sunday.

NOTABLES

Christian Kirk, the Jaguars 2nd-leading WR, is on IR with a clavicle fracture suffered two weeks ago.

Lions vs Texans: Final injury report and medical analysis

Lions vs Texans: Final injury report and medical analysis for the Week 10 matchup in Houston

I’m currently in Houston where it is warm (good) and very humid (bad). As a person who doesn’t like the feeling of having to take a shower every five minutes, I’m looking forward to watching the Lions in the air-conditioned comfort of the Texans indoor stadium. Technically, the roof is retractable so there is a chance it is opened to the night air, but it has only been open for one game since the 2021 season.

I’m also looking forward to seeing the fresh energy of multiple key Lions who got some non-injury-related time off – Brian Branch (ejection), Josh Paschal (shoulder mass excision), and Jameson Williams (suspension).

The Lions got a surprise downgrade this week with Taylor Decker who is out. The Lions haven’t played a backup OT yet this year (except for garbage time), so this could impact the game significantly. The rest of the Lions active starting roster on both sides of the ball is intact.

The Texans will be missing a star player on defense (Will Anderson), and likely their #1 WR on offense (Nico Collins). While Collins’ status is technically up-in-the-air, I have multiple reasons listed below why I suspect he won’t play.

The Texans #2 WR, Stefan Diggs is already out with an ACL. Thus, the Texans may be without their top three WR’s as there was a surprise downgrade during the week to #3 WR Tank Dell.

DETROIT LIONS

Taylor Decker OT (UL LP NP – Out) shoulder

Decker presumably hurt his shoulder in practice this week. Dan Campbell stated it’s probably not “something major” which is reassuring. Decker has a history of shoulder surgery in 2017 and it’s unknown if the current injury is related.

Jalen Reeves-Maybin LB (NP NP NP – Out) neck

The 3x NP is a bit concerning after being injured last game. It’s reassuring that he returned to the game late for the onside kick which suggests there were no signs of a spinal issue. Whether he is put on IR this weekend will tell us a lot.

Malcolm Rodriguez LB (NP NP NP – Out) ankle

Rodriguez suffered a scary-looking left ankle sprain early in the Titans game and missed the last game. There was optimism he might be available this weekend but that won’t happen. With 3x NP this week, next game vs the Jaguars is also in doubt.

Za’Darius Smith DE (NP NP FP – Questionable) personal

Smith got two days off to acclimate to his trade from the Browns. He hasn’t had a bye yet and the Lions did, so the Lions may give him a game off at some point. That game might be this Sunday.

Josh Paschal DE (FP FP FP – In) illness

Paschal is ready to go after missing two games for a benign shoulder mass excision.

Emmanuel Moseley CB (FP FP FP – Out) pec

Moseley’s tore his pec in August and has been out all year. His 21-day practice window opened November 6 which keeps him tracking along the 16-week timeline of CJ Gardner-Johnson’s pec tear of last year. Expect Moseley to be available around Thanksgiving.

Ifeatu Melifonwu S (FP FP FP – Out) ankle

Melifonwu has been out since the middle of preseason with a suspected Achilles issue. His 21-day practice window opened on November 6 which is a good sign that he’ll be available later this month.

Sione Vaki RB (FP FP FP – In) knee

Vaki hurt his knee late in the Titans game and missed the last game. Good news that it was minor.

Mekhi Wingo DT (FP FP FP – In) ankle

Wingo hurt his ankle presumably in practice last week and missed the last game. He is a valuable backup at the DT position.

Brodric Martin DT (FP FP FP – Out) knee

Martin is in his 2nd week of his 21-day practice window. Expect him to be moved to the active roster around November 20.

NOTABLES

Jameson Williams returns from his two game suspension.

HOUSTON TEXANS

Nico Collins WR (NP NP LP – Questionable) hamstring

The Texans top WR logically will be out for multiple reasons:
1)Hamstrings benefit from gradual ramp-up to prevent aggravation and a single LP is as steep a ramp as you can have.
2)He’s already missed four weeks to this injury so if he was going to try to play this Sunday, he would have started practicing on Wednesday. It’s not like those two extra rest days is making a significant difference in recovery for a game this weekend.

Tank Dell WR (UL UL LP – Questionable) back

If Dell can’t go, that would mean the Texans might be without their top 3 receivers on the year.

Will Anderson DE (NP NP NP – Out) ankle

On video, this star pass-rusher appeared to suffer a left high ankle sprain last game. Even mild high ankles can take a while to recover from, especially at the DE position (see Micah Parsons). Anderson leads the team with 7.5 sacks on the year so this is a big loss.

Derek Barnett DE (NP LP FP – In) calf/shoulder

Barnett is a part-timer at DE and has 2 sacks on the year. He likely will have a larger role with Anderson out.

NOTABLES

Stefan Diggs, the Texans 2nd-leading WR, is out for the year with a right ACL.

Mario Edwards, starting DT, is serving a suspension and is out for this game.

Kenyon Green, starting LG, is out for the year and was replaced by Kendrick Green last game.
