North Carolina and South Carolina both get 4-star commitments

North Carolina and South Carolina both get 4-star commitments

The college football season is about to begin in earnest this coming weekend, but recruiting the next round of talent is a year-round slog. On Monday, two regional schools both scored commitments from four-star defensive recruits in the class of 2023.

First, North Carolina got a commitment from Varina (Va.) linebacker Kaveion Keys. He is the 25th-ranked linebacker in this class and the fifth-best overall player in the state of Virginia. Keys (6-foot-3, 205 pounds) had 16 offers in total, including ECU, Auburn and Penn State.

Keys can also play wide receiver and scored two touchdowns last week.

According to Tar Heels Wire, UNC may need to continue recruiting Keys to keep him in the fold.

North Carolina was also trying to land Charles Herbert Flowers (Md.) EDGE Desmond Umeozulu. However, South Carolina scored a commitment from him.

Umeozulu (6-foot-6, 239 pounds) had 36 offers, including Boston College, Ohio State and UNC, and is ranked No. 21 at his position and No. 4 in Maryland.

South Carolina is now No. 15 in 247Sports’ 2023 recruiting class rankings. Meanwhile, North Carolina is only a few spots lower at No. 20.

Four-Star Desmond Umeozulu names Ohio State as finalist, sets commitment date

Announcement date coming soon for another highly coveted edge rusher. #GoBucks

While the Ohio State football team currently has the No. 1 ranked recruiting class in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings., the Buckeyes have missed out on a couple of key prospects in recent days. But no reason to fret, Ryan Day and company still have guys that are high on the priority list to bring in.

One of those young men is four-star edge rusher, Desmond Umeozulu from Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Umeozulu is rated as the No. 19 edge rusher in the country according to 247Sports composite rankings and carries a crystal ball prediction to land in Columbus.

Umeozulu recently trimmed his list to four schools including Ohio State, North Carolina, Pitt, and South Carolina. He also shared via his personal Twitter account that he’ll be committing on August 29 live on CBS Sports HQ.

After a couple of misses on the defensive side of the ball, Umeozulu would help ease the sting just a bit. And there are still plenty more yet to make their decisions with Ohio State still in the thick of things.

The Buckeyes currently have two defensive linemen in the class committed in Jason Moore and Will Smith.

An elite edge rusher from the state of Maryland included Clemson in his top school’s list on Saturday.

Charles Herbert Flowers High School (Springdale, MD.) 2023 four-star Desmond Umeozulu announced a top nine which features the Tigers, Ohio State, Penn State, Georgia, Texas, North Carolina, Pitt, Maryland and South Carolina.

Umeozulu (6-6, 230) is ranked as high as the No. 10 defensive end and No. 121 overall prospect in the 2023 class by the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Umeozulu is a fan of the way Clemson utilizes its edge rushers. He’s had a chance to watch guys like Xavier Thomas, Myles Murphy and K.J. Henry, and the way they’re all deployed by Clemson and Hall certainly catches his eye.

“I always like when they have rushers that can play the flats, can get after the quarterback and stop the run,” Umeozulu told The Clemson Insider in January. “It’s something that definitely models my game. I feel like once I get a little bit more experience dropping in coverage sometimes, I would be the perfect fit for Clemson.”

That’s exactly how he envisions himself at the next level.

“It’s definitely a place to consider,” he said of Clemson. “Just the culture and the history that Clemson holds — you have to consider Clemson — if you get an offer from Clemson, you have to consider. It’s just such a good program, that it’s just something that I have to consider for sure.”

Texas among top schools for four-star EDGE Desmond Umeozulu

The Longhorns are among the nine schools in the running.

The Longhorns are looking to build up their pass rush of the future, something that the team has been lacking since Joseph Ossai departed for the NFL.

Bo Davis was able to bring in a fantastic haul when it came to defensive linemen in the 2022 class, and he seems to already be working his magic in the class of 2023.

The Longhorns have found themselves as one of the nine finalist for four-star EDGE Desmond Umeozulu. Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson, UNC, Maryland, Pittsburgh, South Carolina and Penn State are also among his top schools.

The Maryland native is ranked as the No. 121 player nationally in 247Sports’ composite rankings, No. 10 at the EDGE position, and the No. 2 player in the state of Maryland. Here is what 247Sports’ national recruiting analyst Brian Dohn said about about his skillset.

Ideal frame to play edge in college with chance to add mass and strength and perhaps play defensive line. Can easily get to 240 pounds and has plus length. Plays mostly with hand on ground for Flowers but has some standup reps. Flashes twitch at snap and is able to stay low. Athleticism shines when coming off edge. Combination of length Plays attacking style and can re-direct along line of scrimmage. Possesses body control and closing speed to tackle in space. Has speed to chase down play from behind. Plays with energy and effort and has physical approach. Willing to work through double teams.

As it currently stands, Texas has three commits in their 2023 class and all of them are on the defensive side of the ball.

Texas offers four-star EDGE Desmond Umeozulu from Maryland

Desmond is the cousin of Texas offensive line signee Neto Umeozulu and top 2024 target Zina Umeozulu.

Texas went to the east coast to offer 2023 four-star edge rusher Desmond Umeozulu on Monday afternoon.

That last name should sound familiar to Longhorn fans. Desmond is the cousin of Texas offensive line signee Neto Umeozulu and top 2024 target Zina Umeozulu.

247Sports composite ranks Desmond as the No. 4 player in the state of Maryland and a top 300 prospect nationally.

Colleges all over the country love his upside as a player. He has picked up over 33 offers from big name programs such as Georgia, Clemson, Oklahoma, Ohio State and now Texas.

Umeozulu has a very projectable 6-foot-6, 230-pound frame that should play well at the next level. He helped lead C.H. Flowers High School to an impressive 11-2 season and a state semifinal appearance in his junior year.

A fast-rising edge rusher from the state of Maryland reported an offer from Clemson on Monday.

Charles Herbert Flowers High School (Springdale, Md.) 2023 four-star Desmond Umeozulu announced the offer from Tigers on Twitter.

Umeozulu (6-6, 230) is ranked as high as the No. 21 defensive end and No. 189 overall prospect in the 2023 class by Rivals.

Umeozulu has seen his recruitment heat up since the month of December. Since the calendar turned to 2022, he has added offers from Texas A&M, Southern Cal, Michigan, Penn State, West Virginia, Ohio State and Florida State among others.

He told The Clemson Insider recently that he has been keeping in touch with both Tigers’ defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin and defensive ends coach Lemanski Hall.

“We just have been having casual conversations right now,” Umeozulu said. “We’re just trying to build a relationship. I’ve been talking to Coach Hall and he said they’re really building a culture, so they feel like they’d rather build a relationship before they put in an offer. Right now, we’re just building a good relationship.”

Umeozulu is a fan of the way Clemson utilizes its edge rushers. He’s had a chance to watch guys like Xavier Thomas, Myles Murphy and K.J. Henry and the way they’re all deployed by Clemson and Hall certainly catches his eye.

4-star edge rusher feels he’d be ‘the perfect fit’ for Clemson

Clemson has been in contact recently with a talented edge rusher from the state of Maryland.

Both Tigers’ defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin and defensive ends coach Lemanski Hall have been keeping in touch with Charles Herbert Flowers (Upper Marlboro, MD.) 2023 four-star Desmond Umeozulu.

“We just have been having casual conversations right now,” Umeozulu told The Clemson Insider. “We’re just trying to build a relationship. I’ve been talking to Coach Hall and he said they’re really building a culture, so they feel like they’d rather build a relationship before they put in an offer. Right now, we’re just building a good relationship.”

How does Umeozulu feel about Clemson’s process?

“I think it’s very important,” he said, “because, obviously, they don’t know the type of person I am off the field and what I got going on and who I really am. I feel like it’s best for the program and myself and my future for them to get to know me first and for me to get to know them before they put in an offer.”

Umeozulu has already gotten a good feel for Hall. They were on the phone for about 40 minutes just a couple of days ago.

“We just have been having really good conversations and he seems like a really good coach,” Umeozulu said.

As far as his recruitment is concerned, Umeozulu is keeping his options open. He’s not even looking at a whole lot of schools in particular right now. Umeozulu is just trying to let everything be as it is, so he can just put all his cards on the table  —  which is probably something he’ll do in the spring — after he takes a couple of visits.

One of those visits could be to Clemson.

“We’ve been talking about it,” Umeozulu said. “[Coach Hall] told me that he wanted me to come up in the spring.”

They haven’t really talked about the logistics of a potential visit, though, it’s just been a topic that’s been breached. There’s mutual interest in a visit this spring, but some of those details will need to be figured out in the coming weeks/months.

According to Umeozulu, Hall is a big fan of his hands and that he has a really good feel for the run.

“He told me that if I were to go to Clemson, he would want to see me on the edge,” Umeozulu said of Hall, “and sometimes playing outside linebacker as well. I would be doing a little mix of both.”

How would he describe himself as a player to someone who hasn’t seen him play before?

“I’m very explosive,” he said. “I have really good hands. I’m a leader on the field. That’s probably my best three traits. I lead. I can help my teammates on the field when we’re down. I make sure we stay with a level head.”

Umeozulu is a fan of the way Clemson utilizes its edge rushers. He’s had a chance to watch guys like Xavier Thomas, Myles Murphy and K.J. Henry and the way they’re all deployed by Clemson and Hall certainly catches his eye.

“I always like when they have rushers that can play the flats, can get after the quarterback and stop the run,” Umeozulu said.

Umeozulu has seen his recruitment heat up since the month of December. He had a solid list of offers and since then, he’s added Ole Miss, Buffalo, Kentucky, Washington, Oklahoma and Vanderbilt.

“It’s definitely surprising,” Umeozulu said of his recruitment taking off, “because this is something very new to me. My freshman year was my first year ever playing defensive end. I was playing linebacker and running back my whole life. This is my second year ever playing defensive end, so it’s all just surprising to me, how my life really changed in these last couple of months.”

Umeozulu (6-5, 220) ranks as the No. 25 edge rusher and the No. 4 overall prospect in the state of Maryland for the 2023 recruiting class, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.
