Former five-star offensive tackle Brey Walker to enter the transfer portal as a graduate transfer.

What was expected has now become official as Brey Walker enters the transfer portal.

A fifth-year senior for the Sooners, Walker played in just three games in 2022. After graduating in December, Walker will explore the portal for his final year of eligibility.

“I just want to say that Oklahoma has always been my ideal school since I was a young child,” Walker shared via Twitter back in December. “Additionally, I want to thank Bob Stoops for giving me a scholarship because he recognized that Oklahoma was where I was raised. Some of the best year of my life have been these last five years.

“I want to express my gratitude to all the coaches, players, and supporters who have shaped me into the athlete and person I am today. That OUDNA will always be with me. Having said that, I’ll be registering on the transfer portal as a graduate transfer for my last year of eligibility next week. Boomer Sooner.”

Brey Walker was the highest-rated recruit in the state of Oklahoma and the No. 2 offensive tackle in the nation, according to 247Sports. The former five-star prospect had a hard time finding consistent playing time with the Sooners.

Over his five-year tenure, Walker played just 311 snaps at the University of Oklahoma. The Westmoore product enters the transfer portal looking for a chance to make an impact in his final season of eligibility. Sometimes a player simply needs a fresh start. Hopefully Brey Walker can find a spot where he can get some playing time to showcase his skills.

Ranking the Oklahoma Sooners last 10 recruiting classes.

The Oklahoma Sooners closed the early signing period of the 2023 cycle with a ton of momentum, earning a last-second flip of five-star safety [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag]. Bowen joined Guyer teammate [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag] and edge rusher [autotag]Adepoju Adebawore[/autotag] in the 2023 class to give the Sooners three five-star players for the cycle.

It was a huge recruiting haul for [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] and his staff, who worked their way into the top five of the 247Sports recruiting class composite. This class has Venables fingerprints all over it with a heavy emphasis on the defensive side of the ball.

The Sooners ended up with 16 four- and five-star signees, and 10 of those came on the defensive side. Six were defensive backs, two were linebackers, and two were defensive linemen. The three-star players they signed on defense can play. [autotag]Taylor Wein[/autotag], [autotag]Markus Strong[/autotag], [autotag]Ashton Sanders[/autotag], [autotag]Phil Picciotti[/autotag] and [autotag]Erik McCarty[/autotag] are athletic players with high motors. Each has a chance to outperform his recruiting status.

It was an historic class for the Sooners, marking just the second time in the 247Sports database (since 2000) that they signed multiple five-star defensive players, and only the second time they had three five-star signees. The Oklahoma Sooners 2023 recruiting class got a jolt over the last week and a half, picking up six recruits (three along the offensive line) since June 27. Heath Ozaeta kicked off, but since they’ve added Cayden Green and Logan Howland to the mix.

Green was one of the more highly anticipated commitments for the Oklahoma Sooners and his pledge had social media buzzing. Green is a talented prospect that gives the Sooners a huge boost in their team recruiting ranking, which has risen to No. 13 in the wake of his commitment.

With key losses on both sides of the ball, the Oklahoma Sooners will have a lot of competition for starting roles this spring. Here are 5 position battles to watch.

The Oklahoma Sooners are set to stage the next phase of their offseason preparation for the 2022 season; spring practice.

With the team putting in winter workouts with returning strength and conditioning coach Jerry Schmidt, Oklahoma starts fresh with a new coaching staff, which has brought it in a new culture, hoping to return Oklahoma to national prominence.

Most of the coaching staff was retained on the offensive side of the ball for new coordinator Jeff Lebby. Lebby brings a new approach to offensive football, looking to return Oklahoma to a fast-paced, balanced, and efficient offensive identity. The only change came at wide receiver, where Dennis Simmons moved on to USC, and Cale Gundy took over as the Sooners wide receivers coach.

Despite the losses, excitement has followed the Oklahoma Sooners in the locker room and the fan base for the start of the Brent Venables era. On defense, it’s a whole new crew, with a new defensive scheme and a new energy. Heading into 2022, more than half of the defensive starters will be new for the Sooners.

With spring practice set to kick off, let’s look at five key position battles this offseason.

Earlier this week, Max Olson of The Athletic re-ranked the 2018 recruiting class. Olson’s scoring system included postseason awards. He gave points for players starting multiple seasons. In his re-rank, Olson has the Sooners 34th in the nation.

The Oklahoma Sooners have a few players from that class still in Norman or are preparing for the 2022 NFL draft. If several players from the class step into starting roles, it will help Oklahoma move up in the rankings. Players like Nik Bonitto could get drafted in the top fifty and help OU move up in Olson’s rankings.

With national signing day in the books, we move on to the buildup and excitement of the annual spring game at Ohio State.

It was a fairly uninteresting week in Columbus, Ohio, as national signing day has lost most of its luster due to the early signing period. The other thing taking our attention was all the drama up north in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Those storylines are not being evaluated here, though, as we are continuing our focus on the transfer portal and the available talent that could potentially help the Buckeye football squad.

The offensive line was not a weakness, but it certainly had issues that were larger than normal, and it would not be surprising for Ohio State to add depth to the bookends of the offensive line. The following are the top five available offensive tackles in the transfer portal.

The transfer portal for the Oklahoma Sooners has been as busy as I-35 and I-40 through Oklahoma City over the last month. They’ve seen starters load up the moving trucks and find new homes out east and other players withdrawal their names from the portal.

The biggest name to hit the portal since Spencer Rattler left for South Carolina entered his name into the pool of players on Monday. Caleb Williams, who is exploring his options after the departure of Lincoln Riley to USC hasn’t ruled out a return to Oklahoma, but he will certainly test the transfer market.

Not long after Williams made it known he’d explore the transfer portal, the Sooners received some relief from the quarterback exits from quarterback Dillon Gabriel, the former UCF quarterback. Gabriel was committed to UCLA in the portal, but his close connection to offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby led to a flip of commitment, and Gabriel is now a member of the Oklahoma Sooners.

OU offensive lineman Brey Walker entered the transfer portal on Friday. He joins several other Sooners as recent transfer portal defections.

Oklahoma offensive tackle Brey Walker entered the transfer portal on Friday. Walker joined Oklahoma as a five-star recruit in the Sooners’ 2018 class.

The Moore, Okla., native was rated as the nation’s No. 29 overall prospect and No. 4 offensive tackle in the 2018 class according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

According to 247Sports’ Chris Hummer, Walker saw a total of 308 career snaps over the course of his Oklahoma career and just 40 this season.

Walker was listed on Oklahoma’s depth chart as the backup right guard behind starter Chris Murray ahead of the Oklahoma State game.

Sports Illustrated’s John Hoover touched on what a big offseason it was for Walker on All Sooners back in June.

“Brey Walker, shoot, he’s really come on. Been really impressed with him. We’ve got a lot of competition. If everybody’s there, if everybody’s healthy, we’ve got 6-8 guys that could play guard that I feel really, really good about. I don’t know that I’ve had that anywhere. So he’s had to really step it up, and he’s done a hell of a job, especially these last 4-5 days. Him doing a good job allowed me to move somebody else to left guard, he was playing so well at right guard,” Oklahoma offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh said of Walker back in the spring.

It just never fully materialized at Oklahoma for Walker.

Walker joins the list alongside quarterback Spencer Rattler, wide receivers Jadon Haselwood and Theo Wease, and tight end/H-back Austin Stogner as recent Oklahoma players to enter the transfer portal.

OU also saw defensive back Justin Harrington and offensive tackle Noah Nelson enter the transfer portal back in October.

A four-star recruit out of Moore, Oklahoma, Brey Walker was the No. 4 overall tackle according to Rivals, and No. 1 overall player in the state out of the 2018 class. He had 12 offers in total, including Alabama, George, LSU, Michigan, Texas A&M, and UCLA.

Walker made just two starts last season against Texas Tech and Kansas, but played in 13 of the Sooners 14 games. Offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh has all five of his starters returning for the 2020 season, but Walker will surely continue to be the first option off the bench. Should anyone sit out for any reason, Walker should be the first one to see the field.

At 6-foot-6, 352-pounds, Walker uses his tremendous size to his advantage. Lincoln Riley will certainly continue to put weapons behind the Oklahoma o-line.
