What does the Ravens kick return situation look like?

As training camp looms, conventional wisdom holds that the both the punt return and the kickoff return jobs are Deontay Harty’s to lose.

Special teams, the third phase of the team, are often overlooked. Such is the nature of the game. It is relevant, though, as being a true return specialist is becoming a lost art.

When the Ravens signed wide receiver Deonte Harty from the Buffalo Bills this offseason, they got a guy who provides more value as a return specialist than he does as the fifth or sixth wide receiver.

As the start of training camp looms, conventional wisdom holds that both the punt and kickoff return jobs are his to lose. After all, Harty had 752 punt return yards and 1,907 kick return yards during his four-year stay with the New Orleans Saints.

However, backup running back Justice Hill is expected to push Harty on kickoff returns, while reserve wide receiver Tylan Wallace will be his main competition on punt returns.

Regarding an x-factor, maybe Qadir Ismail, if he does stick on the roster, could be in the mix, too. After all, his dad was nicknamed “the missile,” and Qadir possesses some of his father’s explosiveness and quickness.

Rapid acceleration is one of the most essential traits for a good kick returner, and whoever showcases that ability throughout camp will get the gig.

Deonte Harty’s 70-yard grab-and-go TD is our Saints Play of the Day

Deonte Harty’s 70-yard grab-and-go touchdown against the Dallas Cowboys in 2021 is our New Orleans Saints Play of the Day:

There are 70 days left until the New Orleans Saints kick off their 2024 regular season, which means Deonte Harty’s 70-yard touchdown catch against the Dallas Cowboys is our Saints Play of the Day.

Harty did it the hard way. Taysom Hill hit him on a quick pass under the Cowboys coverage and Harty took off after the catch, eluding a couple of defenders before building speed in the open field. He cut through the Dallas secondary to cross the field and score a much-needed touchdown in prime time.

It’s a shame he and the Saints didn’t recapture this success. Harty, who had previously used Harris as his last name and won All-Pro recognition with the Saints as a return man, struggled with a significant turf toe injury during the 2022 season and left to join the Buffalo Bills in free agency in 2023. He’s since signed with the Baltimore Ravens.

Ravens sign former Saints wide receiver Keith Kirkwood

The Baltimore Ravens announced they have signed former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Keith Kirkwood, one of their preferred blockers in 2023:

The Baltimore Ravens have signed former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Keith Kirkwood, the team announced Friday, reuniting him with several of his old teammates — including wide receiver Deonte Harty. Defensive backs Tre Swilling, Arthur Maulet, and Marcus Williams are also in Baltimore these days.

Kirkwood, 29, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent the Saints signed out of Temple back in 2018. He’s appeared in 31 career games while catching 24 passes for 294 yards and 3 touchdowns. That time has been spent entirely with the Saints outside a two-year stop with the Carolina Panthers, with whom he played in four games.

He played ahead of Rashid Shaheed last season as one of the Saints’ favored run-blocking wideouts; Kirkwood was asked to block and create opportunities for his teammates on 151 of his 236 snaps on offense, per Pro Football Focus charting. He ran just 85 routes and was targeted only 9 times. Still, we’re wishing him well in this next opportunity. A handful of players from last year’s Saints team remain available in free agency, including wide receivers Michael Thomas and Lynn Bowden Jr.

Jameis Winston’s 72-yard touchdown pass is the Saints Play of the Day

Jameis Winston’s 72-yard touchdown pass is the New Orleans Saints Play of the Day. It was a great moment in a rough 2021 season:

We’ve got 72 days to go until the New Orleans Saints kick off their 2024 season, which means Jameis Winston’s 72-yard touchdown pass is our Saints Play of the Day. The Saints visited the Washington Football Team back in 2021 after an uneven 2-2 start to their season. Winston hit wide receiver Deonte Harris (who later changed his last name to Harty) on a strike down the middle of the field, retaking the lead after the Washington Football Team scored first on a 45-yard field goal.

It was a big moment for Winston. The Saints’ first drive ended after he threw an interception to linebacker Cole Holcomb, so this was something like redemption. Alvin Kamara matched a Washington touchdown run  with one of his own, and Winston put the Saints ahead at halftime with a 49-yard touchdown pass to Marquez Callaway.

New Orleans left town with a win, 33-22, going into their bye week with a much-needed 3-2 record. They won each of their next two games but the good times didn’t last. Winston was cut down by a season-ending injury and neither Trevor Siemian nor Taysom Hill were able to replace him under center (and the less said of Ian Book’s disastrous start during a prime-time game full of COVID-19 absences, the better). The season went poorly, sure, but there were still highlights like Winston’s long touchdown pass. And that’s worth remembering fondly.

Ravens special teams Coordinator Chris Horton on WR Deonte Harty: ‘He’s electric’

Ravens special teams coordinator Chris Horton says the team “love” WR Deonte Harty

The Baltimore Ravens have made a few additions to their wide receiver room throughout the 2024 offseason. While they re-signed Nelson Agholor and drafted Devontez Walker, the team also signed All-Pro returner Deonte Harty to bolster their special teams unit.

Baltimore has been a special teams factor for years, and Harty’s addition is the latest in a long line of moves to bolster the unit. When asked what Harty brings, special teams coordinator Chris Horton mentioned how the organization already loves him, calling him ‘electric’.

“I think this guy – he’s electric. He’s been a Pro Bowl player. He’s been an All-Pro player, and when he was sitting there and his name came up, it’s just, ‘Oh, man. We lost our guy. We need a guy to fill these shoes, a guy with some experience.’ You like to have a guy with some experience so [that] you’re not really relying on young guys, especially in the punt return game. Then, it just allows us to do a little bit more back there. I’m excited about him. I know the coaches are. The players are. When I talk to the guys, some of the veteran guys, ‘Hey, we’ve got Harty coming in.’ Those guys ask ‘Is that the guy from the Saints, the guy who used to be on the Saints? I say, ‘Yeah, man, that’s the little returner from the Saints.’ So, he’s a well-known and respected returner in this league, and we love him.”

Harty grew up in Maryland and has carved out an extremely successful NFL career. As the team’s new returner, he will replace former Baltimore wide receiver Devin Duvernay in the lineup, and his experience and skillset should be extremely valuable.

John Harbaugh is excited about the Ravens wide receiver group

The Baltimore Ravens’ wide receiver corps has largely remained intact from last season’s much-improved unit. The biggest exception is losing veteran Odell Beckham Jr. and adding Devontez Walker in the fourth round of the draft. Ravens head coach John Harbaugh expressed excitement over the group’s potential this season when speaking with the media following the draft.

I’m excited about the wide receiver position,” Harbaugh said. “I’m looking forward to seeing this offense come together, and we’ve been working the personnel side of it; we’ve been working the scheme side of it; we’ve been working with the individual players – developmentally. You put all those things together, and you get out there, and you start practicing, and you get ready to play games. This is a very talented group, and anybody that wants to challenge that, bring it on; you’ve got to line up and play against us, and we’ll see if we don’t have playmakers out there running around [and] making plays. I’m personally very excited about this group. Obviously, ‘Tez’ [Devontez Walker] is a great addition, and the guys that are already there are going to really have good seasons. So, we’re ready to go.

Baltimore signed 2021 first-round wide receiver Rashod Bateman to an extension before the draft to keep him in Baltimore through the 2026 season. The team re-signed veteran Nelson Agholor to a one-year deal just before the start of free agency while later signing wide receiver and All-Pro returner Deonte Harty. Other returning players at the position include Zay Flowers, Tylan Wallace, and Sean Ryan.

Former Saints All-Pro Deonte Harty signs with Ravens

Deonte Harty has found a new team. The former Saints All-Pro return man is signing with his hometown Ravens:

Deonte Harty has found a new team. The former New Orleans Saints All-Pro return specialist has signed a one-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens, returning to his hometown.

Harty spent his first four seasons in the league with the Saints, primarily working as a returner for them. In 2019, Harty led the entire league with 338 punt return yards to go along with a return touchdown. These numbers ultimately led to Harty receiving All-Pro recognition in his very first season.

In 2021, Harty earned an increased role as a receiver in the New Orleans offense, specifically as a deep threat option for Jameis Winston. Harty hit career-high numbers that season with 36 catches for 570 yards and three touchdowns.

However, an injury-plagued season in 2022 led to a parting of ways, but Harty was able to rebound when signing with the Buffalo Bills. Harty was active in 16 games for the Bills last year, providing a spark to their special teams unit, but he was let go as a salary cap casualty this offseason. With the Ravens’ departure of receiver/returner Devin Duvernay, Harty should be able to find himself literally right at home in Baltimore.

Ravens to host former Bills WR Deonte Harty on a free agent visit

The Baltimore Ravens are hosting former Buffalo Bills WR Deontay Harty on a free agent visit

The Ravens are hosting a familiar name, as Baltimore native and former Bills wide receiver Deonte Harty is visiting the Under Armour Performance Center.

Harty spent the first four years of his career with the New Orleans Saints as a wide receiver and special teams performer before signing with Buffalo for the 2023 season.  Harty logged 15 catches for 150 yards and a touchdown and returned a punt for a 96-yard touchdown in Week 18.

Harty has also averaged 25.2 yards per kickoff return throughout his career.

Bills cut former Saints All-Pro Deonte Harty, but don’t expect a reunion

The Bills released Deonte Harty, a former All-Pro returner with the Saints. But a reunion is ‘not currently in the works’ per NOF’s Nick Underhill:

Could the New Orleans Saints bring back Deonte Harty? Their former All-Pro returns specialist was a salary cap casualty with the Buffalo Bills earlier this week, and on Friday he shared on social media that he was visiting New Orleans, saying “Back like I never left.” Harty is an unrestricted free agent who will not count into the compensatory draft picks formula for 2025.

The Saints need to start adding wideouts at some point. With Chris Olave, A.T. Perry, and Rashid Shaheed under contract for 2024 while Michael Thomas heads out into free agency, they’ve filled just three of the 13 training camp roster spots they used last year on receivers. New offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak is going to want his own players and that many vacancies gives him an opportunity to rebuild the depth chart.

But a reunion with Harty is “not currently in the works,” per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill. So maybe he was just in town visiting old friends. Shaheed has done everything Harty offered at a higher level both on offense and in the return game.

While there’s a chance the situation could change, don’t bet on it. The Saints have a plan for restocking the receiving corps and Harty might be an option if they can’t get other players they’re prioritizing more highly. If he’s still available this summer when they’re filling out the depth chart for training camp, maybe it makes sense to have him compete for a roster spot. At this time the Saints are looking for help elsewhere.

Bills release receiver, return man Deonte Harty

#Bills release receiver, return man Deonte Harty:

The Buffalo Bills are moving on from wide receiver and return man Deonte Harty after only one season.

Harty, who signed a three-year deal with Buffalo last offseason, has been released in a salary cap move.

Mostly used as a returner, Harty never got going as a playmaker out of the slot. Harty returned 26 punts – with 25 fair catches – for 323 yards, including his 96-yard touchdown against the Miami Dolphins.

Harty’s release will clear $4.315 million on the team’s 2024 salary cap. While Harty did sign that three-year deal, the structure of the contract giving Buffalo cap space always made his deal more of a one-year variety.

Cutting Harty comes alongside a slew of other players released by the Bills, including safety Jordan Poyer, center Mitch Morse, defensive back Siran Neal, among others. Coming into the day, the Bills were approximately $40M over the 2024 salary cap.

Bills Wire will continue to update all roster decision made by the team throughout the 2024 offseason.
