A closer look at Scott Frost’s desire to coach again

Looking back at Scott Frost’s career after an informative interview.

Former Nebraska head football coach Scott Frost is looking for a return to the coaching ranks. Frost recently spoke with Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports and made it clear that he will return to the sidelines and he hopes that it will be sooner rather than later.

“For the first time in my life, I don’t know what’s next. I’m dying to get back in.”

Frost was fired just three games into his fifth season as Nebraska’s head coach after compiling a 16-31 record. He tells Dodd that he knows he’s a good coach and is just waiting for the right opportunity.

“I know this, there’s some good coaches out there. I’m a good coach. I belong doing it. I just don’t know for sure where that’s going to be right now. If the right head coach job comes along, I’d take it. If the right coordinator job comes, I’d take it.”

Everything Aggies Head Coach Jimbo Fisher said during his interview with CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd

Sporting his usual upbeat candor, Texas A&M Head coach Jimbo Fisher previewed the Aggies 2023 season with CBS Sports’s Dennis Dodd.

Texas A&M’s 2023 football season, one of the more anticipated campaigns after enduring one of the worst seasons in program history in 2022 (5-7, 2-6 SEC), is now only 40 days away. After SEC Media Days wrapped up last Friday, Head coach Jimbo Fisher made the interview rounds to give us a sneak preview of what lies ahead.

Entering Fisher’s sixth season with the program, 2022 has come and gone, but until vastly different results on the field come to fruition, preseason talking points are as useless as a glass hammer.

Last week, Fisher’s time at the podium during SEC Media Days witnessed a man on a mission focused on rebuilding A&M’s national image, and even though he continued to avoid directly stating if new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino this season, those of us covering the team and a bulk of the fanbase know that Petrino was hired to revamp the offense, and yes, call plays.

In one of his final interviews last week, Fisher sat down with CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd in the most in-depth back and forth this offseason, focusing on the state of the program from now on, Bobby Petrino’s positive effect on the team, and recruiting, and of course, discussing the progress of sophomore quarterback Conner Weigman, who will be battling with senior Max Johnson for the starting postion as soon as Fall camp starts on Aug. 2.

Here is everything Jimbo Fisher had to say during his interview with Dennis Dodd.

According to CBS Sports’ writer Dennis Dodd, Aggies Head coach Jimbo Fisher is one of three coaches “coaching for their job” in 2023

Aggies’ Head coach Jimbo Fisher is apparently coaching for his job in 2023

To absolutely no surprise whatsoever, the 2023 college football season will be headlined by multiple stories concerning Texas A&M. Still, nothing will match the coverage of Head coach Jimbo Fisher’s coaching “hot seat” and just how high the thermometer will go in the midst of the pivotal 2023 campaign.

Earlier this week, CBS writer Dennis Dodd listed his “23 things for Spring” concerning some of the biggest stories in college football ahead of spring football this April, and for the Aggies, the focus remained on Jimbo Fisher’s future with the program, and just how risky is was to hire the controversial, but accomplished Bobby Petrino as the new offensive coordinator, while retaining defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin for the coming season. Dodd briefly described Fisher’s impending future as so:

The buyout goes down by $9 million, which still might not allow monied Aggies boosters to make a move if there is a repeat of 2022. At least the coordinators (D.J. Durkin, Bobby Petrino) have never faced any controversy in their careers.

This a little tongue-in-cheek from Dennis Dodd, but here’s the bottom line: Jimbo Fisher believes that the bulk of his historic 2022 recruiting class who avoided the transfer portal mixed with critical returners on offense and defense will yield incredible results on the field, and even though controversy does surround both Durkin and Petrino, if they don’t deliver as a collective unit in 2023, no one is safe in the future.

National writer: Clemson ‘reestablished itself’ as national power in win over NC State

A national outlet released its latest college football power rankings on Monday following Week 5 of the season.

Clemson (5-0, 3-0 ACC) moved up two spots in CBS Sports’ new power rankings following its 30-20 win over NC State in Saturday night’s top-10 matchup at Death Valley.

The Tigers moved up from No. 8 to No. 6 in the power rankings behind the top five of Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan and Southern Cal, in that order.

“Death, taxes and Clemson clubbing NC State,” CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd wrote. “For the 16th time in the last 18 games between the rivals, the Tigers did just that. Clemson reestablished itself as a national power in its most complete effort of the season.”

Offensively, Clemson had a balanced attack against NC State, passing for 209 yards and rushing for 145. The Tigers scored on all four red zone drives, while Clemson’s defense recorded three sacks, two turnovers and held NC State to only 34 rushing yards on 21 carries.

NC State dropped seven spots to No. 20 in CBS Sports’ latest power rankings. Wake Forest (No. 22) is the only other ACC team besides the Tigers and Wolfpack to appear in the updated power rankings, as Florida State dropped out following its 31-21 loss to the Demon Deacons on Saturday.

Notre Dame wants $75 million in media rights fees to stay independent

Is the Irish’s independence worth this much?

For over 30 years, Notre Dame and NBC have gone together like peanut butter and jelly. Now, the future of the Irish’s independence might depend on the arrangement between the two sides. Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports is reporting that Notre Dame is seeking at least $75 million in its next media rights deal with its longtime broadcast partner. Notre Dame currently earns $22 million every year under its current deal, which expires in 2025.

The only way NBC reportedly would agree to such an arrangement would be if it also took on broadcasts of a Power Five conference. With the SEC’s future firmly with ESPN and the Big Ten about to announce a lucrative deal with Fox, the Big 12 has emerged as the likely frontrunner for NBC. The Big 12’s current media deal also has an expiration year of 2025.

Whether Notre Dame ends up remaining independent or not, it better move quickly. We are at a tipping point in college football, which now is being driven almost, if not entirely by media deals. The last thing the Irish want is to be left behind in all of this dealing and thus possibly put its future as a legitimate contender at risk.

Best of luck to everyone involved with this decision. It may not be pretty, but it has to get done.

CBS Sports believes the Texas Longhorns will be much better in 2022

CBS Sports has Texas at No. 16 in their way-too-early top-25

Is this just history repeating itself or are the Longhorns going to finally be for real?

We will have to wait to actually know the answer to that question, but multiple outlets such as 247Sports, and more recently CBS Sports, seem to believe that the Longhorns are poised for a bounce-back season.

Texas fans are certainly hopeful of a major turnaround, as going 5-7 in the first year under Steve Sarkisian was not the expectation of the Longhorn faithful at all.

CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd released his way-too-early top-25 ahead of the 2022 season, and surprisingly Texas was a part of it. Even more surprisingly, Texas came in at No. 16 in the rankings behind Tennessee and USC, while being ahead of Wake Forrest and Oregon.

Here is what Dodd had to say about what he thinks of the Longhorns:

The Longhorns will need an entire offseason to wash the taste of a loss to Kansas, as part of a 5-7 season, out of their mouths. Steve Sarkisian gets a five-star infusion at quarterback with Quinn Ewers. Xavier Worthy is a budding star at wide receiver. Only TCU and Kansas, though, gave up more yards. Is this any way to get ready for the SEC?

In reality, Texas may not even start the season with a ranking, but they are counting on a ton of young talent to help lift the program to success.

Looking ahead to the 2022 college football season, right now, this national analyst isn’t ready to call Clemson a contender for the College Football Playoff.

On Tuesday, with the book now officially closed on the 2021 college football campaign, Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports released his way-too-early top 25 for the 2022 college football season.

Dodd has Clemson (10-3, 6-2 ACC in 2021) all the way down at No. 9 in his rankings for 2022.

While Dodd believes the Tigers have a chance to extend their streak of consecutive 10-plus-win seasons in 2022, he “can’t put Clemson in the playoff hunt just yet.”

“The Tigers should be back in the hunt for a 10-win season (for the 12th straight year). Sorry, can’t put Clemson in the playoff hunt just yet,” Dodd wrote. “There is too much uncertainty at quarterback, where D.J. Uiagalelei needs to prove himself, and across the coaching staff with two new coordinators.”

Dodd ranked Alabama No. 1 in his way-too-early top 25, followed by (in order from Nos. 2-10) Ohio State, Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Baylor, Notre Dame, LSU, Clemson and Arkansas.

Brian Kelly to make crazy money at LSU

He’s going to make how much more than Saban? Mercy

Brian Kelly was asked just last week if he’d ever leave Notre Dame for a reason besides to retire.  His response made it seem like he’d be staying under the golden dome for a long time but did leave himself somewhat of an out.

“No, I mean, look, I think Mike Tomlin had the best line, right? Unless that fairy godmother comes by with that $250 million check, my wife would want to take a look at it first. I’d have to run it by her.” – Brian Kelly

The fairy godmother showed up in the form of LSU and now Kelly is headed to the bayou.  He won’t quite reach that $250 million mark but he’ll be making a ton.

According to Dennis Dodd of CBS, Kelly’s deal is expected to pay him annually around $15 million.  Even if its a little less than that like Matt Fortuna of The Athletic reports, it’d still be more than what Nick Saban was making entering this season.

Long story short: Brian Kelly got paid.

CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd says Steve Sarkisian being fired is “inevitable”

CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd is already calling for Steve Sarkisian’s head?

In what seems like a fever dream season from hell, Steve Sarkisian went from being the golden boy of college football to having people call for his job already.

Texas started off the season a respectable 4-1, but have not won a game in over a month now. They have lost five straight games while leading in every single one of them at one point, and being ahead by double-digits in three of them. After being the hottest name on the market, Sarkisian was thought by many to finally do the thing that Charlie Strong and Tom Herman couldn’t, and that was bring Texas back.

While it is an overwhelming overreaction given that it has been less than one season, media personalities like CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd think that it is only a matter of time before Sarkisian is shown the door like the two coaches before him.

“Whether Sark is canned Sunday or Monday, next week or next season, a result like this makes his future appear inevitable now. I don’t know how much of it is even his fault,” Dodd said.

He did not hold back when writing about Sarkisian, essentially saying he is dead in the water. Here is what he had to say about Sarkisian’s brief time at Texas:

Just a few months ago, Sark was that guy. His hire made total sense. It still might if Sarkisian survives this and goes on to win big at Texas. He was the best name left on the board and probably came highly recommended by Alabama coach Nick Saban. The two share the same high-powered agent, Jimmy Sexton.

But first, Sark has to turn around a locker room that looks like it has quit on him. Until then, the process is a template for how a school paints itself in a corner: Texas was so desperate to find — and overpay — for a competent coach, it has to shell out $21 million in buyout money to admit its mistake. Even that might be too much for those cigars considering Herman is living comfortably off his $15 million buyout.

But sooner or later, they have to look in the mirror.

They’re the ones who swung and missed on Saban. Remember that? They’re the ones who pulled the trigger on Herman when it looked like he was, you know, winning. Worse, Ryan Day, Dabo Swinney and Jimbo Fisher aren’t walking through that door. Right now, at Texas, there isn’t even a door.

Sarkisian is facing a giant uphill battle to finish out the season, as the Longhorns have to win their two remaining games to become bowl eligible. He also is in dire need of bringing in playmakers whether it be via the transfer portal or high school ranks in order to strengthen this roster for next season.

Dodd like many fans think Texas should already move on, but unless the program wants to be an even bigger laughing stock in the college football realm, they will need to stick it out and give Sarkisian time to build.

Clemson slipped a little bit further down in this national outlet’s latest college football power rankings.

CBS Sports released its power rankings after Week 7 of the college football season and now has the Tigers at No. 22, down one spot from where they were in CBS Sports’ power rankings following their Week 6 bye.

Clemson (4-2, 3-1 ACC), which escaped Syracuse with a 17-14 win last Friday, travels to Pittsburgh this Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. tilt with Pitt (5-1, 2-0) — currently the No. 24 team in the CBS Sports power rankings.

Dennis Dodd, who authored the power rankings, wrote this about the Tigers:

“Another day, another ACC struggle. The conference’s worst scoring offense managed 17 points, then survived as Syracuse missed a late field goal. In the last full season in 2019, the Tigers had 238 points halfway through the year. This season, they’ve scored 123.”
