Packers get wrecking ball DL in Dane Brugler’s latest mock draft

Reacting to the two players mocked to the Packers in Dane Brugler’s most recent two-round mock draft at The Athletic.

The Athletic’s Dane Brugler has released his second mock draft of this year’s draft cycle.

In his first mock draft, which was released in November, Brugler had the Green Bay Packers selecting Kentucky offensive lineman Darian Kinnard with the 30th pick overall.

Here are the results from his latest mock draft:

Pick 32: DeMarvin Leal, DL, Texas A&M

This would be a dream scenario for the Packers. Leal is a disruptive force that would immediately boost Green Bay’s interior pass rush, while also helping shore up the run defense.

Leal looks the part at 6-4, 290 pounds. He has a quick first step and has made a living making plays behind the line of scrimmage. The Texas A&M defensive lineman finished the season with 58 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and 8.5 sacks.

It’s not a stretch to say that Leal would be the most talented defensive lineman that Kenny Clark has played with during his career in Green Bay. Leal has the length and athleticism to be a disruptive force in the NFL.

From Brugler:

The Packers love toolsy front-seven defenders, and Leal is exactly that. He isn’t yet the sum of his parts, which is why he could still be available at this point in the first round. But at 6-4 and 290 pounds, Leal can line up anywhere on the defensive line and has the traits to develop into a productive starter.

Pick 64: Jeremy Ruckert, TE, Ohio State

The Packers will likely address the tight end position at some point in the 2022 NFL Draft. In Brugler’s mock, he has the Packers spending a premium pick on the position.

Ruckert’s numbers aren’t eye-popping, but he has reliable hands and is a smooth accelerator in his routes. He has the ideal frame at 6-5 and he does a great job of making contested catches.

While he may not have gaudy numbers, Ruckert did the dirty work for Ohio State. He’s a solid run blocker and could help boost any team’s run game when he’s on the field.

Rucker finished this past season with 26 receptions for 309 yards and three touchdowns. Over the past three seasons, Ruckert hauled in 12 touchdown passes.

Overall reaction

It’s worth noting that Brugler mocked Eric Stokes to Green Bay around this time last year. What Brugler says holds some weight.

If the Packers came away with Leal in the first round it would be a slam dunk pick. He has all the tools to be a force up front. Leal and Clark would cause a lot of mayhem for the Packers.

Ruckert could step in from day one and provide an impact both as a blocker and as a receiver. If the Ohio State tight end landed in Green Bay he could put up similar numbers (60 receptions, 497 yards, seven touchdowns) to what Pat Freiermuth posted in Pittsburgh this past season.

LOOK: DeMarrco Hellams from the top rope

LOOK: DeMarrco Hellams delivers an epic comeback to Texas A&M’s DeMarvin Leal!

A few weeks back coach Saban went on a masterful rant about the expectations from the fans and the pressure it puts on the players. In that rant, he also mentioned how Alabama receives each of its opponent’s best shots.

Plain and simple, Alabama’s dominance has placed a massive target on the Tide.

Texas A&M star defensive lineman DeMarvin Leal’s quote proved coach Saban’s point.

Without even knowing it, Leal made the greatest possible recruiting pitch for Alabama.

Not to be outdone, Alabama star defensive back DeMarcco Hellams came out of nowhere to deliver an emphatic comeback.

Hellams’ response is bound to hype the Crimson Tide faithful!

Chargers bolster defensive line in Touchdown Wire’s mock draft 1.0

The Chargers take a talented SEC defensive lineman in Touchdown Wire’s first 2022 mock draft.

The Chargers will be in search of reinforcements along the defensive line this upcoming offseason.

Not only is Los Angeles going to be looking to fix the porous run defense, but Linval Joseph, Justin Jones, and Christian Covington are all slated to be free agents.

That is why Touchdown Wire’s Mark Schofield sees the Bolts addressing the position in the first round by selecting Texas A&M DT DeMarvin Leal in his latest mock draft.

One area where the success has not replicated across town, however, is up front on defense. Staley is finding it a bit tougher to stop the run without a player like Aaron Donald up front. So the Chargers turn to DeMarvin Leal, a defensive lineman from Texas A&M who can play any number of spots up front.

Standing at 6-foot-4 and 291 pounds, Leal is a versatile lineman that’s capable of playing all four positions up front.

He possesses the power, natural body control, and violent hands that allow him to be disruptive and make plays in the opponent’s backfield.

Leal currently leads the Aggies with 12.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks. In addition, he has 37 quarterback pressures, 32 run stops, and 23 hurries this season.

2022 NFL draft: Jets land star cornerback in Draft Wire’s new 3-round mock

Draft Wire has the Jets beefing up their lackluster defense in its latest three-round mock draft.

As is the case in most seasons, all Jets fans have to look forward to right now is the NFL draft.

New York is 2-7 and has found a new way to embarrass itself almost every weekend. There is still hope for the future though, as one of Gang Green’s few silver linings is that Joe Douglas will once again have the chance to land two impact players in the first round of the draft.

The Jets are currently slated to pick third with their own pick and seventh with the first-round pick acquired from the Seahawks in the Jamal Adams trade. Draft Wire’s latest three-round mock draft has Douglas using those picks to upgrade New York’s putrid defense before addressing needs on both sides of the ball on Day 2.

Let’s take a look at who Draft Wire has the Jets selecting in the first three rounds of the 2022 NFL draft.

Mock Draft Watch: Sporting News predicts DT in Round 1

What is being mocked to the #Browns in the most recent NFL mock drafts?

The 2021 NFL season is not even close to being over and the Cleveland Browns are very much in the thick of a legit playoff birth, but we here at Browns Wire take great pride in monitoring the NFL draft year-round and understanding the general landscape and thoughts of the general media is a main priority.

Today we are diving into an interesting mock draft supplied by our good friends over at The Sporting News written by Vinnie Iyer. It is extremely early to be labeling mock drafts as bogus or giving them praise for being ideal, but they are still fun to look at and provide a unique understanding of what others think are the top prospects and how they view the Cleveland roster. Now let’s dive in!

10 potential Lions prospects to watch this college football weekend

Here are 10 players to watch this weekend with an eye towards the Detroit Lions and their draft needs in the 2022 NFL draft.

It’s the third weekend of the college football calendar, one of the last weeks featuring non-conference matchups across the national landscape.

There are several games that will help train the scouting eye on some future NFL prospects on the slate. Here are 10 players to watch this weekend with an eye towards the Detroit Lions and their draft needs in the 2022 NFL draft.

Draft Wire mock shows Jags addressing lines of scrimmage in 2022

Jaguars address OL and DL in this two-round 2022 mock from Draft Wire.

If there are two areas that the Jaguars left relatively unchanged this offseason, it’s the offensive and defensive lines of scrimmage. On the offensive side, the only major addition was second-round tackle Walker Little, and while the team added several players on the defensive line like Roy Robertson-Harris, none of the additions stand out as particularly splashy.

That’s why it stands to reason those will be positions the team will look to address heavily after the 2021 season. According to the latest 2022 two-round mock draft from Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling, the Jags bolstered their personnel in the trenches with their first two picks.

Easterling projects the team will receive the sixth overall pick next year, which will be used to draft Texas A&M defensive end, DeMarvin Leal. The rising junior totaled just 37 tackles (down one from his freshman year) and 2.5 sacks. He’ll need to boost that production if he wants to be a top-10 pick, but the talent is clearly there. Plus, his 6-foot-4-inch, 290-pound frame gives him prototypical size for a hand-in-the-dirt defensive end.

Jacksonville hopes it already has a pair of future star edge rushers in Josh Allen and K’Lavon Chaisson, but Leal would give the team another starting-caliber option for an interior 3-4 end.

With the team’s second-round pick, Easterling projects the team will go for an offensive tackle once again, this time Ohio State’s Thayer Munford. The fifth-year senior is one of the most experienced offensive linemen in all of college football, with 33 collegiate starts to his name.

He enters 2021 as a fourth-year starter, and though he needs to show more to justify a potential first-round selection, he’d be an excellent option with the 38th pick, as Easterling projects. Munford was the top offensive tackle in the Power Five last year in terms of pressure percentage allowed, per Pro Football Focus, at just 1.2%.

Assuming Cam Robinson, who was franchise tagged this offseason, walks at the end of the year, that would leave Little as the presumptive starter. He’s a bit of a project player, and it wouldn’t be a bad idea to add another talented player like Munford to the mix.

Obviously, a playoff-contending season for the Jags would change this outlook markedly, but for now, it seems like a solid guess at what the team’s plans will be next April.

Texans should keep an eye on Texas A&M DE DeMarvin Leal in 2022 NFL draft

The Houston Texans need help everywhere, and Texas A&M DE DeMarvin Leal would help the pass rush if he declared for the 2022 NFL draft.

If the Houston Texans only win four games in a 17-game schedule, as they are projected to do in 2021, they should assuredly land the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft.

With that premium selection also comes the trickle-down for Houston to take first-round talent that may have fallen early in the second round.

One player from the collegiate ranks the Texans should monitor throughout the 2021 season is Texas A&M defensive end DeMarvin Leal. The Converse Judson High School product is entering his junior year with the Aggies, and is the third-ranked returning edge defender going in 2021, according to Pro Football Focus.

Leal has a lot of power with his 6-foot-4, 290-pound frame, and it showed routinely this past season. He notched an 80.0-plus grade as both a run defender and a pass rusher in 2020, something only four other Power Five edge defenders accomplished this past year. Leal displayed improved hand usage and a deadly push-pull. He flashed exactly that in his performance against Florida, earning a career-high PFF grade.

Leal was a consistent performer in 2020 with a single-game PFF grade north of 70.0 in nine of his 10 outings, which led to an 88.3 PFF grade for the season. He may be 290 pounds, but he sure doesn’t play like it with his athleticism and twitch. Needless to say, Leal is clearly living up to his five-star recruiting status.

If the Texans are still running the Tampa-2 scheme with a 4-3 base under Lovie Smith in 2022, they will need a down lineman that get get after the passer and also play the run. Leal would have the ability to upgrade the defensive end position beyond what the Texans are going to get in 2021 out of Jacob Martin and Whitney Mercilus, two former outside linebackers. While the Texans may address quarterback with their first-round selection, they need to find someone who can harass opposing passers with their second-round pick.

Would DeMarvin Leal, Zion Nelson make sense for Giants in 2022?

An early look at the 2022 NFL draft and two prospects — DL DeMarvin Leal and OL Zion Nelson — already connected to the New York Giants.

Now that the 2021 NFL draft has concluded, it’s time to focus on the 2022 NFL draft. We’re not kidding. Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling has published his “way too-early” 2022 mock draft, which we briefly touched on earlier this week.

The Giants, remember, have two first round picks next year, so here’s who he sees the Giants selecting.

[vertical-gallery id=665243]

In Easterling’s mock draft, the Giants have the seventh overall pick and the Chicago Bears’ pick, which is No. 11.

With the seventh pick, the Giants take Texas A&M defensive lineman DeMarvin Leal. The 6-foot-4, 291 pound junior is expected to be a top 10 pick next April. He is considered a “hybrid” players can line up at any any position on the defensive line.

“He has an unbelievably competitive nature. When he’s on the field, I don’t ever see him loaf for one second,” Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher said of Leal last October. “I don’t care what drill it is, what we’re doing or how we do it. Those kinds of guys change cultures of an organization because they’re great players, and they’re highly recruited players who play like they have no ability … with their effort and toughness.”

With the 11th pick, the Giants select Miami offensive tackle Zion Nelson, a 6-foot-5, 315 pound underclassman. Nelson played left tackle last season as a sophomore but will need this season in college to sure up his fundamentals.

“He’s just a freak of nature. Zion’s an incredibly gifted football player,” center Corey Gaynor said. “He’s got long arms. Think he’s big and strong, and I think he’s very twitchy. He’s everything you want out of a left tackle.”

A lot can happen between now and the 2022 NFL draft, but odds are the Giants will still need a quality offensive lineman by then. They also love their versatile defensive linemen, so both Leal and Nelson are worth watching this coming college season.

Giants select DeMarvin Leal, Zion Nelson in early 2022 Draft Wire mock

In Draft Wire’s way-too-early 2022 mock, the New York Giants select DL DeMarvin Leal and OT Zion Nelson.

The 2021 NFL draft has officially come and gone, so what better time than now to look ahead to the 2022 NFL draft?

That’s exactly what our friend Luke Easterling of Draft Wire did this week, offering up his “way-too-early 2022 NFL mock draft.” And for the New York Giants, who have two first-round picks thanks to a draft-day trade with the Chicago Bears, they go heavy on the hog mollies.

[listicle id=668469]

With an order determined by the current Super Bowl odds, the Giants are slated to select at No. 7 overall and No. 11 overall.

With their first projected pick, Big Blue selects Texas A&M defensive lineman DeMarvin Leal, who 247Sports has rated as a top prospect in 2022.

Leal is one of the more intriguing defensive prospects in the 2022 draft cycle thanks to his plus athletic ability, explosiveness off the ball and his versatility. Listed as a defensive end for Texas A&M’s front, the 6-foot-4, 290-pound Leal can capably play both inside and outside, generating pressure wherever he lines up. Leal rated as PFF College’s ninth-best EDGE rusher nationally a season ago, excelling as both a run defender and as a pass rusher. His 32 pressures ranked within the top 50 nationally of EDGE rushers as well despite playing in a system built around stopping the run.

Leal isn’t as big, but he features some of the traits that made Christian Wilkins such a dynamic player for Clemson a few years ago: Freakish athletic ability for his size, excellent against the run and dynamic when needed as a pass rusher be it with a speed or power move. In a deep EDGE class, Leal feels like one of the safer bets to go off the board in the first round.

With their second projected pick of the first-round, Draft Wire has the Giants selecting Miami offensive tackle Zion Nelson.

247Sports does not have Nelson rated among their top 10 2022 prospects, but did list the 6-foot-5, 310-pound lineman as an honorable mention.
