ESPN’s three-team trade proposal sends Dejounte Murray to Lakers

This three-team trade proposal could be the Lakers’ most reasonable way to land Dejounte Murray.

The Los Angeles Lakers can’t stay above .500 for that long this season. Coming into Monday with a 24-23 record and five wins in their last seven games, they fell apart at the seams in a 135-119 loss to the Houston Rockets.

That loss is sure to reignite trade talks involving the Lakers, especially when it comes to Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray. In fact, they may get an up close and personal look at him when they play Atlanta on Tuesday. Murray missed Atlanta’s last game with a hamstring ailment, but he’s listed as questionable for Tuesday’s contest.

While the Lakers and Hawks have talked about a potential Murray deal, the sticking point is the fact that the Hawks reportedly don’t want Russell. Therefore, a third team would be needed to complete such a deal.

ESPN’s Kevin Pelton proposed a three-team trade that would give the Lakers Murray for a reasonable price while finding a good situation for Russell.

Dejounte Murray: Three potential trade destinations

It seems for all the world as though the Atlanta Hawks will be trading Dejounte Murray in the next two weeks. With a 19-27 record that will struggle to make the play-in tournament let alone any noise at the top of the Eastern Conference, they need a change; even though he was a headline acquisition relatively recently, Murray becomes on the block by default, as he is the most changeable part they have to offer.

Since coming to the Hawks and pairing with All-Star point guard Trae Young, Murray – a one-time All-Star in his own right – has played a different role. When Young is on the court, the ball is or should be in his hands, and Murray’s assists per game totals have taken a hit from 9.1 in his final season with the San Antonio Spurs, down to 5.1 in his first 45 games of this season.

On the flip side, his scoring average this season is a career-high 21.4 points per game, a continuing source of growth throughout his career. Yet Murray’s defense is not enough to offset what Young gives back on that end. It is unclear if anyone could be; nonetheless, if the defensive advantage is not there, then perhaps better offensive cohesion could be.

In terms of what Murray did wrong to be traded; he didn’t. While his defense has wilted somewhat this season, Murray is still a productive two-way player of quite some caliber and of the right age to be valuable. If the Hawks are looking to deal Murray, be it actively or passively, they are not doing so because of his individual failings. They are doing so because they need to make a winning trade.

With this in mind, here are three possible trade destinations for Dejounte Murray to have hit the rumor mill, and the reasons why they all make at least some sense.

Stein: Lakers have dialed back their pursuit of Dejounte Murray

The Lakers may be thinking twice about trading D’Angelo Russell for the Hawks’ Dejounte Murray.

Los Angeles Lakers fans badly want their team to make a trade, and Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray is the man many of them seem to want. The team has had talks with Atlanta regarding him, but those talks have hit an impasse, reportedly because Atlanta doesn’t want D’Angelo Russell in return.

However, Russell has been on a heater since going back into L.A.’s starting lineup. In fact, his excellent play of late has reportedly made the team think twice about trading him.

In fact, NBA reporter Marc Stein wrote that Russell’s strong play has resulted in the Lakers dialing back their pursuit of Murray.

In his last eight games, Russell has put up 27.5 points and 6.4 assists a game while shooting 52.3% from the field and 54.2% from 3-point range. Not coincidentally, the Lakers have won five of their last seven contests.

NBA trade deadline 2024: The 10 most interesting players available and what it’ll cost to get them

Dejounte Murray, Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan are some names to watch.

The 2024 NBA trade deadline is approaching in just a few weeks and we may see a few former All-Stars involved in transactions.

As noted by my colleague Mike Sykes, this deadline may be quieter than normal because some of the bigger names (such as Pascal Siakam, O.G. Anunoby, Immanuel Quickley, RJ Barrett, Bruce Brown and Terry Rozier) have already gotten traded.

But that doesn’t mean we will see no star power or players of value get moved. With that in mind, we took a look at some of the most intriguing trade candidates in the NBA and shared their expected value based on the most trusted reporting around the league.

Here is how it is shaking out so far:

Amick: Dejounte Murray to Lakers rumors have ‘very real legs’

Could it only be a matter of time before a trade sends Hawks guard Dejounte Murray to the Lakers?

The NBA trade deadline is slowly approaching, and Los Angeles Lakers fans are hoping their team will make a big splash to resurrect its championship hopes.

The Lakers are 22-23 and in ninth place in the Western Conference. It’s not exactly what they envisioned last summer when many expected them to be contenders. That has left them aggressively canvassing the trade market for an upgrade or two.

The player they have been linked to the most is Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray. Reportedly, a search for a third team to take on D’Angelo Russell in a possible deal is underway.

According to NBA insider Sam Amick, people around the league believe there is a very real chance Murray will end up with the Purple and Gold (h/t Lakers Daily).

“It feels like that has got very real legs to it,” The Athletic’s Sam Amick said regarding rumors linking Murray to the Lakers. “… It’s a question of how long does (Hawks general manager) Landry Fields hold out? But it feels like the Lakers have separated themselves from the Dejounte pack, and it feels like — to some degree — they’ve locked in on him as a guy they think can help them.”

Murray, a 6-foot-5 combo guard, is averaging a career-high 21.4 points a game this season. He has dramatically improved his 3-point shooting and is known as a strong defender and a speedy player in the open court, which are all qualities L.A. badly needs.

Which two players do the Lakers most want to trade for?

Many know the Lakers are trying to acquire Hawks guard Dejounte Murray, but who is the other player at the top of their wish list?

This season’s NBA trade deadline will be Feb. 8 at 3 p.m. Eastern, which means time is slowly starting to run out for teams to secure some type of upgrade for their rosters.

The Los Angeles Lakers have apparently been aggressive in scouring the market for at least one player who can help them improve their dismal 22-23 record and resurrect their championship aspirations.

Their top target is clearly Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray, who can not only score and facilitate but also be a speed demon in the open court and play effective defense. It appears the Lakers and Hawks have made some progress on a potential deal, although nothing is imminent.

At the same time, according to Shams Charania, their other main target is Bruce Brown Jr., who recently was traded to the Toronto Raptors (h/t Lakers Daily).

Brown can play both the 2 and 3 and is known as a strong defender and the type of multifaceted role player whose impact can go beyond his numbers. He won an NBA championship last season with the Denver Nuggets and is averaging 11.9 points a game this season, although he has been struggling with his 3-point shooting.

Los Angeles reportedly wanted to sign him last summer with its mid-level exception, only to lose out to the Indiana Pacers.

Report: Spurs linked to potential Dejounte Murray trade again

The San Antonio Spurs have once again been linked to Dejounte Murray as a potential trade target.

While the San Antonio Spurs may not be heading to the playoffs anytime soon, they clearly have a franchise player on their hands. Victor Wembanyama is one of the most impressive players in the league, and putting star-level talent around him should be the team’s top priority moving forward.

Head coach Gregg Popovich mocked the notion that the Spurs would be making any win-now moves this year, yet as trade season has gone on, they’ve continuously been linked to one former All-Star: Dejounte Murray. San Antonio traded him to the Atlanta Hawks less than two years ago, but he would be a great fit on their new-look roster.

And now, with just over two weeks left until the trade deadline, they’ve been linked to Murray again. Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the Spurs are one of multiple teams to have shown an interest in Murray, along with the Philadelphia 76ers.

“The Hawks have had negotiations with the Los Angeles Lakers about Murray. The Sixers, Milwaukee Bucks, New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, and San Antonio Spurs have been mentioned as other teams with an interest,” Pompey wrote.

Murray is having a solid season for the Hawks so far. He’s averaging 21.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists while shooting 47.1% from the field and 39.0% from behind the three-point line.

Adding him to the starting lineup would give the Spurs a massive upgrade at point guard to pair with Wembanyama, who could benefit from having an elite playmaker dishing him the ball.

Lakers are looking for third team in potential Dejounte Murray trade

The Lakers are still working to attempt to pull off a trade for Hawks star guard Dejounte Murray.

The NBA trade deadline is about two and a half weeks away. There have been many trade rumors surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers, and they reportedly have an ample number of trade targets they’re interested in.

But at this point, they clearly have one top trade target: Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray. The Lakers and Hawks have reportedly talked about a possible trade and even discussed a possible framework that includes starting guard D’Angelo Russell.

However, the Hawks don’t seem to be very interested in taking back Russell; in fact, they initially asked for Austin Reaves, whom L.A. is reluctant to give up.

According to Shams Charania, L.A. and Atlanta are looking for a third team to be involved in a possible deal in order to re-route Russell (h/t Lakers Nation).

“The Lakers and Hawks did have some pretty extensive conversations about a Dejounte Murray trade a couple weeks ago. They were centered around D’Angelo Russell, a 2029 first-round draft pick and a pick swap, I’m told. The holdup was that Atlanta wanted to find a third team for D’Angelo Russell. He’s got a player option for next season, they want to find a spot where they might be able to get an expiring contract back.

“I would expect the sides to circle back as we get closer to the February trade deadline. But listen, D’Angelo Russell, the last five games, I think we need to give him credit for the way he’s playing, 27 points a night, six assists per game, about five 3s per game as well. His splits are unbelievable, 56% from the field over the last five games. He’s gotten a lot of flack over the last month or so, he’s been in and out of the starting lineup. He’s back in the starting lineup now and has played at a really high level for the Lakers over the last five games.”

While Russell has been playing very well lately, an argument could still be made that Murray would be an upgrade. Murray is averaging 21.1 points and 5 assists a game while shooting 47.1% from the field and 38.2% from 3-point range so far this season, and he has a reputation as a fine defender and a speed demon.

Trade rumor rankings: Dejounte Murray, Bruce Brown and more

HoopsHype ranks the 10 players who have appeared most often in trade rumors over the previous week.

This week saw another huge name come off the board on the NBA trade market as the Toronto Raptors dealt Pascal Siakam to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Bruce Brown, three-first round picks and more. That means the player who ranked No. 1 in our trade rumor rankings article last week is now off the board.

Don’t worry, though, as we still have plenty of interesting names to talk about on the NBA trade market.

Below, check out the 10 players who have appeared most often in trade rumors over the previous week, based on the number of appearances on our Trade Rumors page.

The Lakers’ latest trade offer for Dejounte Murray, revealed

The Lakers and Hawks may have a starting point for a potential Dejounte Murray trade.

After the Los Angeles Lakers’ latest inexcusable loss, which came on Friday to the dismal Brooklyn Nets, the pressure is mounting even more on a franchise that was fully expecting to contend for the NBA championship this season.

The need for some sort of shake-up is increasing, and with no indication that head coach Darvin Ham’s job is in jeopardy, that shake-up will have to be a trade.

Although the Lakers reportedly have several trade targets, the one they seem most zeroed in on is Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray. While the two teams have talked about a potential deal, the Lakers have been unwilling to include Austin Reaves, a player Atlanta wants, in any potential trade.

Jovan Buha revealed a framework for a possible deal has been discussed. That framework consists of D’Angelo Russell, rookie guard Jalen Hood-Schifino and draft capital.

Via The Athletic:

“The Murray buzz is only increasing — and to noisy levels. The Lakers and Hawks have discussed potential frameworks of a deal, including a version late last week that centered on Russell, Hood-Schifino, the 2029 first-round pick and additional draft compensation, according to multiple team and league sources. Talks have since stalled, but are expected to pick back up closer to the deadline.”

While Murray is certainly a very good player (he hit game-winning shots in back-to-back games this week), it is an open question whether he would be enough to reverse the Lakers’ fortunes. It seems their problems now run deeper than mere roster deficiencies.
