Dejounte Murray: Cavs will forever regret trading Kevin Porter Jr. to Rockets

Spurs guard Dejounte Murray reflects on Cleveland’s trade of Kevin Porter Jr. to Houston: “A mistake they will regret forever!”

San Antonio Spurs guard Dejounte Murray has much in common with Kevin Porter Jr. of the Houston Rockets. Both are young guards from the Seattle area, and they now play in the same state and NBA division.

On Saturday, they faced off at Jamal Crawford’s offseason pro-am in Seattle. Porter Jr. clearly held his own versus an impressive defender in Murray, with a final line of 32 points, 14 rebounds, and 7 assists. For his part, Murray also dominated with 44 points, 13 rebounds, and 8 assists.

In the aftermath, however, it was all love between the rising talents. Murray shared a photo with Porter Jr. on his Instagram page, with a caption informing the Houston star that Murray was proud of him.

Then, on the “Ball Don’t Stop” page, Murray took it a step further in the comments section. Here’s how the exchange went:

Initial comment: Cavs really just released Kevin Porter Jr. like nothing. Smh [Shaking my head]
Murray’s reply: A MISTAKE THEY WILL REGRET FOREVER!!!!

The Cavaliers technically didn’t release Porter Jr., since he was traded for a future second-round draft pick. However, the protections on the pick are so significant that it might not ever convey. It was a strikingly low price to pay for a first-round pick from the 2019 draft, but Cleveland felt motivated to move on after a series of concerning off-court incidents.

But with assistant coach and former NBA player John Lucas leading the way as a key mentor, Porter Jr. hasn’t had those types of problems in Houston. A 6-foot-4 guard, the 21-year-old averaged 16.6 points and 6.3 assists in 32.1 minutes per game with the Rockets. The lefty is considered to be a key member of the young core at the center of Houston’s rebuilding efforts, per general manager Rafael Stone, and it certainly helps having accomplished players like Murray vouch for his talent.

WATCH: Dillon Brooks throws down massive dunk against Spurs in NBA play-in game

Dillon Brooks had no mercy for Dejounte Murray on Wednesday night, throwing down a massive dunk in his face on the fast break

You think Dillon Brooks is happy to be playing on the big stage in the NBA play-in game? Look no further than his massive tomahawk dunk in the first quarter against the San Antonio Spurs as proof.

On a fast break, Brooks took the ball down the lane and rose up with a defender in his way, cocking his arm back and throwing it down with authority to give the Memphis Grizzlies an 18-4 lead early on. He celebrated with all of the enthusiasm and confidence that any Oregon fan is used to.

The Spurs eventually came back from a big deficit to make it a close game at half, but the lasting highlight will undoubtedly be Brooks’ slam early on. The playoff certainly suit a player of his stature.

The Spurs paid tribute to NCAA women’s basketball legends with pre-game jerseys

The Spurs showed love to more players than just Becky Hammon.

Before their game against the Charlotte Hornets on Monday evening, the San Antonio Spurs paid tribute to some of the best players who have ever stepped on the floor during the NCAA women’s basketball tournament.

Especially after the pathetic weight room originally provided to the NCAA women’s teams and all of the other ways the NCAA has failed its women’s tournament, it was refreshing to see such support from such a respected NBA team.

Spurs point guard Dejounte Murray got things started with a hat tip to his assistant coach, Becky Hammon, who is a legend both on and off the floor.

Hammon, who has been an assistant for San Antonio since 2014, was once one of the best college basketball players in the nation. She ran point for the Colorado State Rams from 1995 until 1999, leading her mid-major squad to the Sweet Sixteen.

Spurs veteran DeMar DeRozan entered the arena wearing a Cheryl Miller jersey.

Miller, like DeRozan, played college basketball for the USC Trojans from 1982 until 1986. She won Naismith College Basketball Player of the Year during three consecutive seasons, securing national championships in 1986 and 1987 as well.

Her jersey number, No. 31, is retired by the University of Southern California.

Rudy Gay was rocking a jersey from Rebecca Lobo, who is celebrated as one of the most decorated athletes in the history of UCONN’s prestigious women’s basketball program.

Lobo helped lead the team to an undefeated record and a national title in 1995. It was only the second time that a women’s team ran the table for an entire season.

Of course, NBA veteran guard Patty Mills had to show some love to his wife, former Saint Mary’s wing Alyssa Levesque.

Mills, who is one of many Australian basketball players who have attended Saint Mary’s in California, met Alyssa when they were both in college in the late 2000s.

They were married in July 2019 and reportedly have a pretty cute pre-game coffee routine scheduled for whenever the Spurs play in San Antonio.

Lakers vs. Spurs: Live stream, how to watch, TV channel (Jan. 1)

The Los Angeles Lakers start the new year with another game against the San Antonio Spurs on Friday.

The Los Angeles Lakers will begin the new year the same way they ended 2020, facing off against the San Antonio Spurs. As part of something we will see more of in 2021, the Lakers are finishing the second of a two-game set in San Antonio. Due to the coronavirus and also a lesson learned about the quality of play in the bubble, the league is trying to make the most of every road trip and allow the road teams to play and fly out in the same night less often.

With all of that in mind, it should be interesting to see how the Lakers respond after their dominant 121-107 win on Wednesday. LeBron James was excellent on his birthday and got plenty of help as the Lakers shot over 50% from the 3-point line. Wesley Matthews had his first breakout game in a Laker uniform as well on Wednesday, going a perfect 6 for 6 from the 3-point line.

Here’s when you should tune in to see the game:

  • Date: January 1, 2021
  • Time: 8:30 p.m. ET
  • TV Channel: NBA TV
  • Live Stream: fuboTV (watch for free)

Probable starting lineups

Spurs (2-2)

  • Lonnie Walker
  • Keldon Johnson
  • LaMarcus Aldridge
  • DeMar DeRozan
  • Dejounte Murray

Lakers (3-2)

  • Anthony Davis
  • LeBron James
  • Marc Gasol
  • Dennis Schroder
  • Kentavious Caldwell-Pope

Lakers vs. Spurs recap: LeBron reaches 1k straight games with 10 points in win

The Los Angeles Lakers started their road trip with an impressive win over the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday.

The Los Angeles Lakers were on the road for the first time in this young season and on a night when their best player and leader turned 36, the Lakers delivered an impressive victory against the San Antonio Spurs in the first game of a four-game road trip. LeBron James finished with a team-high 26 points to go with eight assists and five rebounds in the game, which was his 1,000th consecutive regular-season game scoring at least 10 points in a 121-107 win on Wednesday night.

Of course, as has been the case so far throughout the regular season, LeBron has had much more help than he was used to last season. Anthony Davis had 20 points and nine rebounds but newcomer Dennis Schröder had 21 points and four assists. Wesley Matthews also had his first breakout game as a member of the Lakers, scoring 18 points while going a perfect 6 of 6 from the 3-point line off the Lakers bench.

James and the Lakers will spend New Year’s Eve in San Antonio before facing the Spurs again on New Year’s Day.

What would Lonzo Ball’s contract extension with the Pelicans look like?

Lonzo Ball and the New Orleans Pelicans will reportedly open up contract negotiations this off-season. Here’s what a new deal could look like.

Recently, The Athletic’s Shams Charania noted that the Pelicans and Lonzo Ball will have contract extension talks in the upcoming off-season. It’s a move that should surprise few given the success Ball has had in New Orleans this season and the fact the Pelicans are still fighting for playoff contention.

Ball’s career has been an interesting one. Bright moments were routinely interchanged with injuries in Los Angeles as he struggled to find consistency. After a similar start in New Orleans, Ball turned things around and put together the strongest stretch of his time in the NBA.

Over the final 31 games before the season came to a halt, Ball shot 41.0% from three-point territory while averaging 14.2 points, 8.5 assists and 7.3 rebounds per game. But while Ball proved he can put up those numbers, what value does a 31-game sample size hold against the previous two-plus years of his career? Did he turn the corner or did he have a well-timed hot streak?

Those are the questions the Pelicans will have to both ask and answer when opening up negotiations. Those discussions will be very interesting as it’s hard to gauge what a starting and ending point for a Ball contract would be.

In discussing a start point, the obvious caveat would come up that the salary cap for the 2020-21 season will be wildly different and lower than any predictions had forecasted. The latest projections came in January and had the cap at $115 million. For the sake of argument, and simply because the true effect COVID-19 will have on the salary cap is not yet known, that figure will be what is used when discussing Ball’s contract. If the salary dips significantly, the annual average value (AAV) of Ball’s contract will naturally drop as well.

Ball’s playstyle is so unique that it’s hard to pinpoint similar players and even harder to find similar players who have recently signed contracts. A decent starting point would be to look at Marcus Smart. While older than Ball, he is a point guard that is not a scorer but contributes in various other aspects of the game. Like Ball, his shot has steadily improved in recent seasons as well. Before the 2018-19 season, Smart signed a four-year, $52 million deal to stay in Boston.

That deal, which comes out to an AAV of $13 million per year, will likely be the absolute baseline in any discussions for an extension. Another similar player in some aspects would be Justise Winslow. Like Ball and Smart, Winslow has not always relied on his scoring and three-point shooting to become a valuable player. And like Smart, he signed a deal worth $26 million deal over two years, another deal with an AAV of $13 million.

A player closer to Ball in age for comparison would be Dejounte Murray. After a breakout season with the Spurs, Murray inked a four-year, $64 million offer with an AAV of $16 million. Ball and Murray have similar playstyles in many regards. Ball has exploded more in his third season than Murray did, though Murray’s injury sidelined him for a year.

All three contracts should serve as reference points for Ball when discussing a deal. Ball’s deal will likely exceed even Murray’s, whose deal looks more like a win for him than the Spurs so far. But how much more would Ball’s deal be?

An AAV of $20 million seems like the realistic ceiling. That deal would likely only come if Ball has a huge close to the regular season and playoffs. But even then, only 53 players in the current NBA have an AAV of $20 million. Even players like Zach LaVine and Bojan Bogdanovic make under $20 million annually.

Ball’s contract, then, would likely come in somewhere in the neighborhood of $18 million at the top end and $15-16 million on the low end. The amount of years is far less predictable. It wouldn’t be a surprise if it was a three-year deal with a player option for a fourth year. That would get him into free agency after his seventh season in the league where, under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, he would be eligible for a 30% max contract.

As noted, though, all of these figures are likely subject to change. As the NBA’s salary comes down, Ball’s deal would likely come down at the same rate. For example, a $17 million AAV deal with a $115 million salary cap would be roughly 14% of the salary cap. If the salary cap goes down to $100 million, Ball’s salary would likely be closer to $14 million AAV. It’s not an exact science, obviously, but it gives an idea of the payday Ball is set for if he and the Pelicans can agree to a deal.

Prediction

Bucks 118, Spurs 102

Moneyline (ML)

The Bucks (-910) are heavy favorites against the flailing Spurs (+600), but avoid laying this kind of bread for such a small return.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Mavericks to win outright returns a profit of $1.10.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The BUCKS (-12.5, -115) are a slam-dunk play despite the fact the Spurs (+12.5, -106) are 3-0-1 ATS in the past four road games. While that’s impressive, the Bucks are 13-4 ATS in the past 17 games overall, and 6-2 ATS in the past eight at home against teams with a losing road record.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 226.5 (-129) is the play in this one. In the past five meetings the Over has hit four times, including four of the past five in Cream City. The Over is 5-2 in San Antonio’s past seven overall, too.

While the Under has been the play for the Bucks lately, hitting in six of the past eight games overall, including 4-0 at home, they’re well rested. In the past 10 when working on two or more days of rest, the Over is 7-3.

Nets face unpredictable opponent in Spurs on Thursday

The Brooklyn Nets can’t overlook Gregg Popovich’s coaching ability — even with this year’s disappointing San Antonio Spurs team.

The San Antonio Spurs are off to a strong start in their candidacy for 2019-20’s most disappointing team.

The Spurs were a playoff team just last season and, as the No. 7 seed, took the Denver Nuggets to game seven in the first round of the playoffs. And they still have the majors pieces from that team: DeMar DeRozan, LaMarcus Aldridge, Derrick White, Bryn Forbes and Rudy Gay. Plus, San Antonio has Dejounte Murray back from his ACL tear. Marco Belinelli and Patty Mills are still around, too. Jakob Poeltl is a tough interior defender.

Now, this group has knocked off the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers, but they also lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Not to mention the Pistons blew them out of Detroit to the tune of 34 points.

The Pistons have beaten Brooklyn, too, but only by four and in the early stages of the season, when the Nets didn’t have an identity. Now Brooklyn does, though. The Spurs, not so much.

But unlike the Cavs, San Antonio has what should be a strong core. The Spurs can absolutely steal a win on Thursday, especially since the game is on their turf.

Also, if the Nets play like they did in New Orleans, they’ll be in trouble.

Though, the fact the Nets were sloppy against the Pelicans could work to their own benefit in San Antonio. Kenny Atkinson wanted to go over the offense before the game, so Brooklyn should be a bit more refined on Thursday.

WATCH: James Harden, Dejounte Murray have heated exchange

Rockets star James Harden was clearly frustrated early in Monday’s game, and it boiled over in a physical sequence with Dejounte Murray.

It was a first quarter to forget for Houston Rockets star James Harden on Monday, with the former MVP scoring just 2 points on 1-of-9 shooting.

However, it’ll likely be remembered for a while because of a confrontation he with Spurs guard Dejounte Murray.

Harden drove inside regularly and appeared to draw contact on several occasions, but officials didn’t grant him a single free throw in the quarter.

Harden’s frustration was evident in his body language on the court, and it boiled over in a physical altercation with Murray in which both players engaged in light shoving and were given technical fouls.

Some of Harden’s frustration may also have had to do with the opponent. The Rockets lost by two to the Spurs earlier this month in a game remembered for his dunk that didn’t count, and they were also denied their ensuing protest over that sequence.

In 20 games before the protest, Harden averaged 14.9 free-throw attempts per game. But the NBA’s scoring leader had a very different whistle in the six games since, averaging just 8.5 free throws per game.

The Rockets (17-9) fell behind 16-2 in the opening minutes of Monday’s game and trailed 35-21 after the first quarter, with Harden’s sub-standard contributions a key early storyline.
