NFL Network’s Peter Schrager endorses Yaya Diaby for DROTY

Diaby leads all NFL rookies in sacks with 6.5 — should he be named Defensive Rookie of the Year?

Bucs edge rusher Yaya Diaby didn’t get starting reps until much later in the year, but now, he’s already showing signs of a bright future.

Diaby was officially given starting reps in the team’s Week 13 game against the Carolina Panthers, and since then, he’s gotten to work. Diaby leads all rookies in the NFL with 6.5 sacks as it stands, and he also showed out in Week 16 with a great tackle for loss on Jaguars wideout Calvin Ridley. He’s been dominant, and now, he’s starting to get recognition for his efforts.

The NFL Network’s Peter Schrager said Tuesday that his pick for Defensive Rookie of the Year is Diaby, who is also second in tackles for loss among rookies. Schrager has been a fan of Diaby for some time how and also included him among the best rookie performers of the week in an NFL Network segment.

As it stands, Diaby isn’t even a candidate to bet on for Defensive Rookie of the Year. Strangely enough, Bucs defensive tackle Calijah Kancey is at +15000, while the Eagles’ Jalen Carter is the betting favorite at -10000.

Lions film breakdown on Brian Branch’s incredible performance against the Falcons

Branch had a monster game and Lions Wire’s Russell Brown breaks down the film on how and why the rookie was so great

When Brian Branch fell to the 2nd round of the 2023 NFL Draft, it was somewhat surprising. It felt like Branch was the top safety in the class and when you watched his tape, he looked like a first-round talent. Somehow, some way, the Lions were able to move up and down the draft board and still land Branch with the 45th overall pick.

Throughout three games this season, he’s been the Lions best rookie and one of their most consistent defensive players. Prior to the Lions week three match-up, I had mentioned that the Lions defense needed to start finding ways to help Aidan Hutchinson.

This past week, they did just that.

Brian Branch was a huge part of that due to his ability to attack downhill and play tight coverage on a consistent basis. Against the Falcons, Branch led the way with 11 solo tackles, three tackles for loss and two pass deflections. Branch made a statement that was much needed. Let’s jump into the film and see the statement made by talented rookie out of Alabama!

Starting with the play that was heard and seen from around the world, we go to the hit on Bijan Robinson. On the play above, the Falcons come out in a 2×2 set that has two in-breaking routes from the left side of the formation and an out-breaking route to the right of the formation.

This is designed to force the defense to flow to their left and in the process, Robinson (Falcons RB 7) slips out of the backfield as a check down. Sometimes, it leaves the running back in space with one or two defenders but once Desmond Ridder (Falcons QB 9) starts running out of the pocket, it forces defenders to stay home much quicker.

As the Lions show a Cover 3 look on defense, you can see Branch (Lions DB 32) get to his curl-to-flats drop in coverage. Once the ball is thrown to Robinson, you’ll see how quickly Branch attacks downhill and closes to Robinson in the flats.

There’s no hesitation from Branch and in the process, he delivers an absolute shot to the running back. Certainly, Branch gets flagged for the hit but Branch made it clear in his post-game interview that he’s there to set the tone and he wants people to know that he can tackle.

No doubt about it, Branch can tackle and he may have been the best tackler in the 2023 NFL Draft class. Going to another example of how good of a tackler Branch can be, we’ll go to the play above.

The Falcons come out in another 2×2 set and prior to the snap, they put Kyle Pitts (TE 8) in orbit motion. Once the ball is snapped, Ridder fakes the hand-off to Robinson and quickly flips his hips to Pitts and throws to him on the swing pass.

Covering the slot receiver on the bottom of the screen, you’ll see Branch read and react quickly. While the slot receiver attempts to block him, you’ll notice how Branch drops his shoulder and rips through the hands of the slot receiver. Without hesitation, he continues to fly up field and brings Pitts down by tackling him at the ankles.

Moving onto another great tackle, we’ll go to one of the better form tackles that you’ll see from a defender. On the play above, the Falcons come out in 12 personnel (one running back and two tight ends) and are looking to run some type of zone run.

Before the running back can even make a decision to try and cut back, Branch is already in the backfield for a huge tackle-for-loss. He makes a tremendous read into the B-gap and is able to lower his center of gravity while getting lateral to the backfield.

In the process, Branch shows great form on his tackle. His shoulder hits the hip of the running back, he shoots his hands to the back of the thighs, and he drives the ball carrier to the ground. As I labeled it on Twitter, it was chef’s kiss. Once Branch starts to cook, let him cook!

It’s not just the tackling ability from Branch that is impressive. It’s his effort in his coverage drops, his positioning and ability to go up and make a play on the football. The play above showcases just that against the Falcons, who are aligned in 12 personnel (one running back and two tight ends).

Prior to the snap, the quarterback puts one tight end in motion to the line of scrimmage, and you can see Branch follow that. Post-snap, the Lions secondary runs another Cover 3 look on defense.

Despite being aligned over the tight ends, you can see how quickly Branch retreats and recovers in his curl-to-flats drop. Once the ball is in the air, Branch does everything he can to jump in the air and get a finger or two on the ball to deflect the pass.

Staying with the coverage ability of Branch, we’ll see another 2×2 set from the Falcons offense. Aligned in the slot at the top of the screen, you’ll see Branch matched up with Drake London (Falcons WR 5). Once the ball is snapped, London attempts to run a simple slant route to the middle of the field.

However, that simple route becomes much more difficult due to fluidity and positioning from Branch. This allows him to be in the hip pocket of London with ease. Once the ball is thrown, you’ll see Branch make a play on the football and break the pass up. This is one of the two pass deflections we saw from Branch on Sunday against the Falcons.

Lastly, the play I want to focus on is the Falcons coming out in an empty set down in the red zone. Covering the slot receiver at the bottom of the screen, you’ll see Branch once again in tight coverage on this out route. There are a couple of keys to this play.

For starters, Branch shows great fluidity with his lower half and it allows him to stay in phase with the receiver during the entirety of the route. Meanwhile, he attempts to play through the hands of the receiver, but once the pass is secured, he makes a sure tackle in-bounds on 3rd down during the closing minutes of the 4th quarter.

Overall, this was a nice bounce-back performance for the Lions defense. Most importantly, this was a huge performance for Brian Branch. It was great seeing the pick-six he had against Patrick Mahomes in Week 1, but the way he played against the Falcons is the way he can play on a weekly basis for this Lions defense. He played fast, physical and he set the tone with every single tackle he made.

So far this season, Branch has been one of the top-graded defenders on the Lions defense with a 74.2 overall grade. There will be hiccups during his rookie season, I’m sure. But with the Green Bay Packers on the schedule for this shortened week, I’d look for Branch to make another impact during the Lions week four match-up in Lambeau Field.

Aidan Hutchinson earns a place in the NFL Top 100 after his rookie season

Hutchinson is already earning respect around the league after just one season

Just one season into the NFL and the Detroit Lions Aidan Hutchinson has already made an impact. While he was expected to be an immediate impact player, I don’t think anyone could predict it would go this well for him in year one.

Drafted as the number two overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Hutchinson registered 9.5 sacks while having 9 tackles for loss and 15 QB hits in 17 games. He also became the fifth player and first rookie with three interceptions and nine-plus sacks since individual sacks were officially tracked in 1982, per NFL research.

Every NFL off-season, the NFL has the players in the league vote on who the top-100 players in the league are. For Hutchinson, he was voted as the 88th best player in the NFL from his peers.

As of now, Hutchinson is the only player from the Detroit Lions on the top-100 list. However, there’s only been the players ranked from 100th to 81st overall revealed. Former Lions running back Jamaal Williams was listed as the 95th overall player. We very well could see Hutchinson’s teammates such as Penei Sewell, Frank Ragnow and Amon-Ra St. Brown on the list.

During the reveal of Hutchinson as the 88th overall player in the top-100, here’s a few things that were said about him from players around the league:

  • “As the seasons progress, you start to see him get better and better. Both in the pass-rush game and in the run game as well.” – Eagles OT Lane Johnson
  • “Some people have, just, that they were born with it. The natural thing that you’re born with. He’s definitely one of those guys that were born with it.” – Saints IOL Cesar Ruiz
  • “I think he’s definitely proved a lot of people wrong.” – Cowboys LB Micah Parsons
  • “I’ll be the first to admit that he was basically playing in our entire backfield when we played them. He’s that type of player.” – Jets RB Zonovan Knight

You can see the full clip of Hutchinson’s reveal into the NFL Top-100 Players below:

Jack Campbell and Brian Branch are top-10 candidates for Defensive Rookie of the Year

Lions picks Jack Campbell and Brian Branch are top-10 candidates for Defensive Rookie of the Year

If you haven’t paid attention to the NFL Draft coverage provided by Lance Zierlein of NFL.com, then you’re missing out. Year-after-year he puts together terrific scouting reports on over 300 draft prospects and he’s about as in-tune with every team’s draft needs and philosophies.

As we enter this upcoming season, Zierlein has put together a list of 10 rookies that will contend for the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

On his top-10 list, there are two rookies from the Detroit Lions. At No. 8 on the list is Brian Branch. Here’s an excerpt from what Lance said about Branch:

“…his NFL Scouting Combine testing failed to excite, but it doesn’t take much tape study to see that Branch is a pro-ready talent with strong coverage technique and tackle consistency. He can play both safety spots or the nickel, so he could be in position to make more plays than your average defensive back as a rookie.”

I’d have to agree with everything that Lance preaches about when discussing Branch, a second-round pick from Alabama. He’s most definitely a pro-ready and was the best safety in the 2023 NFL Draft. Despite the injury scare for C.J. Gardner-Johnson, there should be plenty of opportunities for Branch to learn and see the field as a rookie. He could certainly be a top-candidate to win the defensive rookie of the year away.

But Branch wasn’t the only Detroit Lion on the list. Coming in as the 3rd ranked player on the list was first rounder Jack Campbell. Here’s what Lance said about the first round linebacker:

“I will admit that I wasn’t as high on Campbell as the Lions were, but they certainly weren’t the only team bullish about his potential at the next level. Campbell plays with fairly average sideline-to-sideline speed, but he has a good feel for play development and finds his way to the football quite frequently. Inside linebackers who rack up tackles on good football teams have a track record of winning DROY.”

Much of what happens with Campbell will depend on how much playing time he gets while competing against Alex Anzalone and Malcolm Rodriguez. Fortunately for Campbell, he’s versatile enough to play anywhere as a linebacker and he’s talented enough to see the field early in his career.

Here’s the complete top-10 list for Defensive Rookie of the Year candidates:

  1. Will Anderson Jr., EDGE, Houston Texans
  2. Devon Witherspoon, CB, Seattle Seahawks
  3. Jack Campbell, LB, Detroit Lions
  4. Jalen Carter, IDL, Philadelphia Eagles
  5. Emmanuel Forbes, CB, Washington Commanders
  6. Tyree Wilson, EDGE, Las Vegas Raiders
  7. Christian Gonzalez, CB, New England Patriots
  8. Brian Branch, DB, Detroit Lions
  9. Calijah Kancey, IDL, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  10. Will McDonald IV., EDGE, New York Jets

Best NFL midseason value bets, including Tyreek Hill for MVP

A little midseason bargain betting.

Week 9 is in the books, which means we’re officially past the halfway mark of the new-ish 17-week NFL season.

That’s enough a sample size of games to have a good idea on which players have the best chances to win different awards, but it leaves just enough time for all of that to change.

If you’re a bettor inclined to throw more money at the favorites and their shorter odds, that’s completely understandable given what they’ve shown already this year. This post isn’t for you.

This is all about the players with longer odds that could potentially make a greater case down the stretch of the season. Let’s get into who those players are.

Odds are from BetMGM

Travon Walker: ‘It has to be more than just one sack, one pick’

Travon Walker is seemingly the only one who doesn’t think he did enough in his NFL debut

The Jacksonville Jaguars surprised many when they took Georgia’s Travon Walker with the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, but he looked every bit worth the selection Sunday when he recorded a sack and an interception against the Washington Commanders.

The only one who wasn’t satisfied with the performance was Walker himself.

“It has to be more than just one sack or one pick because obviously we didn’t win the game,” Walker told reporters after a 28-22 loss in Week 1. “A player like me that they drafted number one is supposed to make plays like that, so I need to continue to make plays.”

While Walker holds himself to a high standard, his debut put the rookie pass rusher in rare company. He joined Kevin Hardy as one of two Jaguars to record a sack and an interception in their NFL debut. Walker also became the first player in the league in four years to accomplish that feat in their first career game.

“I mean thought he, for a first game, thought he did some great things,” Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said of Walker. “A huge turnover there in the second half to get some points for the offense. Pretty good performance.”

Oddsmakers listed Walker’s over/under sack total for the season at 6.5 and he’s been commonly listed at 8-to-1 to be named Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Broncos odds and ends: Nik Bonitto a long shot for DROY award

Nik Bonitto is a long shot for DROY, but Nathaniel Hackett is an early favorite for Coach of the Year, per @Tipico Sportsbook.

Denver Broncos outside linebacker Nik Bonitto might contend for league-wide awards one day, but it’ll be hard for him to generate much national attention as a rookie while playing behind Bradley Chubb and Randy Gregory this fall.

That explains why Bonitto has been given +6000 odds to take home Defensive Rookie of the Year honors, according to Tipico Sportsbook. Twenty-nine other rookie defenders have better odds than Bonitto.

Elsewhere on the odds front at Tipico, quarterback Russell Wilson is +1500 to win the MVP award, marking the seventh-best odds in the NFL.

Meanwhile, running back Javonte Williams has +1500 odds to lead the NFL in rushing, also seventh-best in the league. His odds of taking home Offensive Player of the Year are much lower (+6000), 32nd-best.

On defense, Chubb (+4000) and Gregory (+7000) have the 11th- and 19th-best odds, respectively, for Defensive Player of the Year honors. Broncos defensive backs Justin Simmons (+10000) and Pat Surtain (+10000) are considered extreme long shots.

As a team overall, Denver has been given an over/under line of 10.5 wins this year and they have +260 odds to win the AFC West. That ranks above the Las Raiders (+600) but behind the Kansas City Chiefs (+155) and Los Angeles Chargers (+240). The Broncos have the sixth-best odds (+1500) to win the Super Bowl this season.

If Denver does have a big season, Nathaniel Hackett will be a strong candidate for Coach of the Year honors. Hackett has +1500 odds for the award, tied for second-best in the NFL, trailing only Brandon Staley (+1300).

Travon Walker, Devin Lloyd given second and third-best odds to win DROY Award

Both of the Jags’ first-round picks from last week have solid odds when it comes to winning the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award.

The Jacksonville Jaguars came into the 2022 NFL Draft with one first-round pick but ultimately left with two just like they had in 2021. The reason for that was because they traded back into the back of Round 1 to select Utah linebacker Devin Lloyd after taking Travon Walker with the No. 1 overall pick.

Those moves led to the Jags having two of the best defenders in college and a bolstered linebacking corps that fans have high hopes for. The oddsmakers in Vegas also believe that both have a good shot at winning the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award, giving both some of the best odds in the NFL to succeed Dallas linebacker, Micah Parsons.

However, leading the way with the top odds per Tipico Sportsbook are New York Giants linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux and Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, both of whom have a +450 figure. But not far behind them are Walker (+600) and Lloyd (+750), with the second and third-best odds. Green Bay Packers linebacker Quay Walker also shares a +750 figure with Lloyd.

The placement of both Jags selections isn’t shocking, though. Both are versatile and can affect the passer, similar to Parsons. When adding in the fact that they are being placed on a team with veteran Josh Allen, it appears the Jags’ defense can help their rookies take off immediately.

Of the two players, Walker didn’t have eye-popping stats for Georgia (61 tackles and nine sacks), but he was an important part of a national championship defense. In the NFL, he’s going to be asked to rush the passer more and many believe he can be a much more productive player in the NFL than he was in college.

As for Lloyd, his production at Utah was statistically impressive as he accumulated 256 tackles, 15.5 sacks, and 43 tackles for loss before leaving Utah. Most scouts feel like he’s the definition of a modern-day NFL interior linebacker who should have no issues replicating his collegiate success in the pros.
