Instant Analysis: Gregg Williams is going to have fun with Ashtyn Davis

Jets got a raw prospect in defensive back Ashtyn Davis, but he has the speed and versatility to be a force on Gregg Williams’ defense.

Many Jets fans will wonder who Cal defensive back Ashtyn Davis is and why the Jets took him 79th overall, but the pick makes a lot of sense because of his raw athletic ability and versatility on defense and special teams.

For starters, Davis is fast. He went to Cal on a track scholarship before walking onto the football team and working his way from punt return specialist to cornerback to free safety. He returned 70 punts for 1,604 yards and averaged almost 23 yards per return for the Bears. He also recorded 102 solo tackles with seven interceptions as a defensive back.

The Jets don’t have an immediate need at safety – yet – so the expectation is that Davis will be a cornerback and return specialist. His experience at safety means he could also play in the deep secondary if called upon, but he should help fill out the cornerback room led by Pierre Desir, Brian Poole, Bless Austin and Arthur Maulet.

Davis said he can play almost anywhere on defense – cornerback, safety and even weakside linebacker – but prefers the “deep defense.”

“I’m looking forward to manning some people up,” he said. “I think that’s in the cards for me.”

Davis’ sentiment lines up with a lot of scouting reports that peg him as a hard-nosed and fearless defensive back, which could either be a blessing or a curse for Gregg Williams. The Jets love bruisers on defense (see Adams, Jamal) but Davis appears to be over-aggressive at times. He sometimes takes himself out of plays and fails at finishing tackles. Davis is also coming off groin surgery he had in December that forced him to miss the end of the season and the NFL combine.

With that said, Williams knows how to coach up raw talent, and Davis possesses plenty of traits that the coordinator desires.

Davis fits well in a Jets defense that craves versatility. He’s definitely still a developmental player but could turn into a solid enforcer for the Jets in the near future.

Ryan Neal signs his exclusive rights free agent tender with Seahawks

Cornerback Ryan Neal signed his exclusive rights free agent tender with the Seattle Seahawks on Monday ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft.

The 2020 NFL Draft is just days away and the Seattle Seahawks have been busy taking care of a few housekeeping issues ahead of the league’s premier event.

Seattle had two roster transcations officially post on Monday afternoon – offensive lineman Kahlil McKenzie resigned with the Seahawks and cornerback Ryan Neal inked his exclusive rights free-agent tender.

Neal entered the NFL out of Southern Illinois when he signed with the Eagles in 2018. He was cut shortly thereafter and was picked up by Atlanta where he spent one season before he was waived.

Like McKenzie, Neal first joined the practice squad last Septemeber where he remained until he was promoted to the 53-man active roster for the final three weeks of the year.

He logged his first and only career tackle Dec. 22 against the Cardinals.

The Seahawks will undoubtedly look to continue to add to their defense in this year’s draft, which is set to take place this Thursday through Saturday.

Projecting Broncos’ secondary depth chart before the NFL draft

Here’s a look at the Broncos’ depth in the secondary going into the NFL draft.

With the 2020 NFL draft now just one week away, here’s a look at the Broncos’ projected secondary depth chart as it stands right now:

Cornerback Safety Safety Dime Cornerback
Bryce Callahan Kareem Jackson Justin Simmons Duke Dawson A.J. Bouye
Davontae Harris Trey Marshall Alijah Holder Shakial Taylor De’Vante Bausby
Isaac Yiadom P.J. Locke Kahani Smith Tyvis Powell

Denver has a pretty good group of starters but the team is lacking depth across the board. If any of the team’s starters are injured (like Callahan was last year), the secondary will suffer greatly.

After losing Chris Harris to the Chargers during free agency, the Broncos have a big hole at cornerback. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the team use one of their first picks in the draft on a cornerback.

Denver also needs more depth at safety. Simmons should be a reliable defensive back for years to come (assuming he agrees to a contract extension) but Jackson is 32 years old and will need to be replaced in the coming years.

The Broncos should target a cornerback early and add a safety in the mid-rounds of the draft next week. Denver will have 10 picks to use.

Texans CB Lonnie Johnson aiming to improve footwork in second season

Houston Texans cornerback Lonnie Johnson hopes to improve his footwork, and in turn, his coverage skills just in time for the 2020 season.

When the 2020 NFL season kicks off and the COVID-19 pandemic is behind humanity, Houston Texans cornerback Lonnie Johnson doesn’t wwant to keep six feet of space between him and opposing receivers unless necessary.

The 2019 second-round pick from Kentucky has been working on improving his footwork in the offseason. Video emerged of the 6-2, 213-pound cornerback working in a spacious backyard refurbished as enough gridiron for Johnson to go to work.

Johnson retweeted the video and added the lock emoji, indicating that he seeks to tighten his coverage skills in his second season.

Assistant head coach Romeo Crennel said on Dec. 26, three days before the 2019 season finale versus the Tennessee Titans, that Johnson had learned over the course of his rookie season with Houston.

“He’s learned a lot since he’s been with us, but the ability to learn the receivers that you have to go against week in and week out, he doesn’t have that catalog built up yet,” Crennel said. “So he’s going to have to build that catalog so that he can just refer to his notes when he goes up against a guy and he’ll know what to expect and how he should be able to play him.”

What should help Johnson as he builds that catalog is improved footwork. The cornerback group for the Texans may be a bit crowded in 2020 with Bradley Roby and Vernon Hargreaves returning and Gareon Conley, Phillip Gaines, Cornell Armstrong, Anthony Chesley, and Keion Crossen still on the roster.

Broncos CB De’Vante Bausby working out with Clemson defender Isaiah Simmons

Broncos cornerback De’Vante Baubys has been working out with Clemson defender Isaiah Simmons.

Broncos cornerback De’Vante Bausby has been working out with NFL draft prospect Isaiah Simmons at TopSpeed Strength and Conditioning in Lenexa, Kansas. The two defenders are being trained by Cassius Sendish, a former NFL and CFL defensive back who now works as a speed coach.

It’s not unusual for NFL players to work out with draft prospects — and even players from other NFL teams — during the season. Bausby working out with Simmons doesn’t imply that Denver is more likely to select the Clemson defender in April’s draft.

Simmons is an inside linebacker who can also play as a safety and as a cornerback. If the Broncos are interested in Simmons, the team would likely have to trade up to land the versatile defender. Denver is scheduled to select 15th overall in the first round.

The Broncos will have 10 selections in this year’s draft. With so many picks and limited roster spots available, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Denver make several trades during draft weekend (April 23-25).

Ex-Broncos safety Will Parks agrees to 1-year deal with Eagles

Former Broncos safety Will Parks is signing a one-year deal with the Eagles.

Former Denver Broncos safety Will Parks has agreed to a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, according to NFL Network’s James Palmer.

Parks (6-1, 208 pounds) was selected by the Broncos in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL draft out of Arizona. He served as a rotational defensive back and special teams contributor as a rookie, totaling 22 tackles and one interception.

Parks has served as a fill-in starter over the last three years, earning 15 starts since 2017. Parks is a versatile player who was able to fill in at safety, dime backer and even at cornerback when Denver needed him to step up. He will likely get an opportunity to start in Philly.

The Broncos are spending a lot on three of their starting defensive backs and though the team likes Parks, they likely couldn’t afford to re-sign him. In 2020, Kareem Jackson will have a salary cap hit of $14 million, A.J. Bouye will have a hit over $13.4 million and Justin Simmons has received a franchise tag worth $11.441 million.

Parks, 25, has totaled 149 tackles and four interceptions since 2016.

Pro Bowl safety, former Longhorn agrees to two-year deal with Patriots

Former Texas safety Adrian Phillips agreed to a two-year deal with the New England Patriots on Thursday.

Former Texas safety Adrian Phillips is no longer an NFL free agent.

Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports announced that Phillips agreed to a two-year deal with the New England Patriots on Thursday.

Phillips was a 2018 Pro Bowl selection that will bolster the Patriots secondary after safety Duron Harmon was traded to the Detroit Lions on Wednesday.

The versatile defensive back is also expected to contribute on special teams. Although his 2019 season was cut short with the Los Angeles Chargers due to a broken arm, Phillips compiled 94 total tackles, one interception, and nine passes defended in 2018.

Phillips was an undrafted free agent out of Texas in 2014 and has spent his entire professional career with the Chargers.

Report: Broncos targeting CB Kevin Johnson

The Broncos are interested in Bills free agent cornerback Kevin Johnson.

The Denver Broncos are targeting slot cornerbacks in NFL free agency, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Buffalo Bills defensive back Kevin Johnson is among the cornerbacks the Broncos are considering.

Johnson (6-0, 185 pounds) entered the league as a first-round pick out of Wake Forest with the Houston Texans in 2015. He battled through several injuries during his time in Houston and missed 29 games from 2015-2018.

After being released by the Texans last March, Johnson signed a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills. He managed to stay healthy for all 16 games last season and totaled 36 tackles and one sack. He also broke up five passes.

If he signs with Denver, Johnson would be reunited with cornerback A.J. Bouye, who played with him in Houston from 2015-2016.

The Broncos showing interest in slot cornerbacks might be a sign that Denver believes Bryce Callahan could play as an outside CB in Vic Fangio’s secondary. Assuming the Broncos will not re-sign Chris Harris, Bouye and Callahan are currently projected to be the team’s top CBs in 2020.

Broncos safety Will Parks should have a strong market as a free agent

Broncos safety Will Parks appears poised to leave Denver during NFL free agency.

The Broncos have several notable defenders set to become free agents this spring, including safety Justin Simmons, cornerback Chris Harris and defensive linemen Shelby Harris and Derek Wolfe.

One of the team’s lesser-known defenders, safety Will Parks, is also about to become a free agent and he might generate interest from multiple teams once NFL free agency begins in March. NFL Network’s James Palmer indicated earlier this week that multiple teams will be interested in Parks next month.

“I’ve talked to people around the league [and] there is a market for Will Parks,” Palmer said on NFL Now on Thursday. “He played slot corner for them, he is a tough guy that plays everywhere — they consider him a very valuable piece of their defense.

“He’s a guy that has a sleepy market out there for teams that are interested in him. We know the Broncos already have to pay Kareem Jackson, one of their safeties and then Justin Simmons . . . there’s probably no room for Parks.”

Parks was selected by Denver in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL draft out of Arizona. He has served mostly as a rotational defensive back since then, totaling 148 tackles, one sack and four interceptions in 62 games.
