DeAndre Jordan explains leaving Lakers, saw opportunity with Sixers

DeAndre Jordan explains what went wrong with the Los Angeles Lakers and he saw an opportunity with the Philadelphia 76ers.

CAMDEN, N.J.–The Philadelphia 76ers returned home on Monday following a tough loss to the Miami Heat on the road on Saturday and they were able to get some time in with new big man addition, DeAndre Jordan.

The 14-year veteran from Texas A&M did join the team down in Miami on Saturday, but he didn’t play as the Sixers still want to give him more time to get acclimated with his new teammates.

As the Sixers convened for shootaround on Monday morning, Jordan explained why he left the Los Angeles Lakers as well as expressed his excitement by playing for the Sixers and the new opportunity he has in front of him.

James Harden reacts to Sixers adding former teammate DeAndre Jordan

Philadelphia 76ers star James Harden reacts to the addition of former teammate DeAndre Jordan.

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers made a savvy move in the buyout market by bringing in former All-Star big man DeAndre Jordan. The 14-year veteran out of Texas A&M has experience playing for coach Doc Rivers while with the Los Angeles Clippers, and he is expected to help in the rebounding department off the bench.

Jordan is not the player he once was, but he can still help the Sixers off the bench for 8-10 minutes a night. A concern is he might struggle against the more athletic big men in the league, but the Sixers will cross that bridge when they get to it.

Jordan played with James Harden with the Brooklyn Nets in the 2020-21 season, and Harden likes what he sees in terms of Jordan joining him with the Sixers.

“I think he fits in well with us,” said Harden. “He’s a vet that’s been on some really good teams, and it feels like he hasn’t accomplished his goal yet as far as winning a championship so he has an opportunity to do it here. The system is pretty easy. Just go out there, rebound the basketball, communicate defensively, and we’ll do a good job of getting him the basketball for some easy dunks, but he has the right mindset.”

Jordan is a lob threat who can take advantage of playing with a guy like Harden in some lineups. It will be interesting to see how Rivers uses him as they move forward with this new roster.

Doc Rivers explains why Sixers brought in DeAndre Jordan as a backup

Doc Rivers explains why the Philadelphia 76ers went after DeAndre Jordan as a backup big man.

PHILADELPHIA–The Philadelphia 76ers made a savvy move in the buyout market by bringing in 14-year veteran DeAndre Jordan on a deal after he was waived by the Los Angeles Lakers. The Sixers have been in need of some size off their bench and the team brought in Jordan to be the guy.

Jordan is a former All-Star in 2017 and he was named to the All-NBA First Team in 2016. While Jordan is clearly not that player anymore, the Sixers are hoping that he can give the team some energy off the bench with his size and his ability to rebound and block shots.

With that being said, coach Doc Rivers is not yet ready to anoint him as the backup center. Although, he does have experience with him with the Los Angeles Clippers.

“We’ve got a bunch of backup centers now,” said Rivers. “So, he’s just one of them, but it’s great to have him. I know him from a long time ago. I hope he can recapture the lob city days. That would be fantastic for us. We just needed size. Getting him should be good for us.”

Another thing that Jordan could be good for is being a veteran presence for the younger guys on the roster. For example, he can pull Charles Bassey and Paul Reed aside and continue to teach them along the way and give them pointers.

“He also has a history of this past for a guy like Charles,” Rivers added. “You can actually watch tape of and show Charles, this is what you can be with better offense. That’s what I told Charles. Guys like that are very helpful for your young players.”

The Jordan in 2022 is not the same player he was in 2016. He was only averaging 4.1 points and 5.4 rebounds for the Lakers in the 2021-22 season after averaging 7.5 points and 7.5 rebounds for the Brooklyn Nets in the 2020-21 season. He only played 57 games with the Nets and 32 for the Lakers.

“It’s funny, getting him, and honestly, I don’t know what DJ is gonna bring us,” Rivers continued. “He hasn’t played a lot over the last couple of years, but I know he’s big. You’re either 7-feet tall or you’re not and he is.”

He is expected to join the Sixers when they go to Miami on Saturday.

Shake Milton, Sixers react to the addition of big man DeAndre Jordan

Shake Milton and the Philadelphia 76ers react to the addition of DeAndre Jordan.

CAMDEN, N.J.–The Philadelphia 76ers made another move in the buyout market when they brought in 14-year veteran DeAndre Jordan on a deal to be the new backup to Joel Embiid. The Sixers have been looking for someone to replace Andre Drummond and it looks like Jordan is the guy.

Jordan is nowhere near the player he once was when he was named to the All-NBA First Team while playing for coach Doc Rivers with the Los Angeles Clippers, but he is still a veteran who can help a team looking to win a championship right now.

“I’ve only seen him play on TV, but big-time rebounder,” said Shake Milton. “He seems like a really good, like, veteran piece to add to this team looking for a championship run and I think it’s gonna help tremendously.”

Jordan has led the league in rebounding twice in his career and he averages 10.4 for his career. Cut that down to just the 2021-22 season, he is averaging only 5.4 rebounds per game, but in short minutes, he can be a nice help to this team.

Along with being a lob threat off the bench for both Milton and in lineups with James Harden, he can also help a younger guy like rookie Charles Bassey who has the same type of athletic build.

“It’s good,” said Bassey. “I was talking to Doc about it and he talked to me like ‘It’s gonna be good for you. He’s a vet.’ Just watching some film on him and it’s difficult because just watching some film on him. I know what he’s gonna do for the team and I’m excited to learn from someone like that.”

Sixers to terminate Willie Cauley-Stein’s 10-day, sign DeAndre Jordan

The Philadelphia 76ers will terminate Willie Cauley-Stein’s 10-day deal and sign DeAndre Jordan to a deal.

The Philadelphia 76ers will have a new backup big man behind Joel Embiid on Thursday as they will officially sign DeAndre Jordan to a deal. The 14-year veteran out of Texas A&M was waived by the Los Angeles Lakers after playing in 32 games and averaging 4.1 points and 5.4 rebounds.

While Jordan is not nearly the player he once was while playing for Doc Rivers during their time with the Los Angeles Clippers, he is a guy who they can count on to give a few minutes each night and at least be an athletic presence.

The Sixers did have an open roster spot to sign Jordan, but Philadelphia has decided to terminate Willie Cauley-Stein’s 10-day contract making him free to sign elsewhere. He played in two games for the Sixers all in garbage time.

As the Sixers now move forward, they have to decide if Jordan is the missing piece for their bench unit. The second group has been inconsistent and Jordan is a little older out on the floor. It will be interesting to see how they handle all of this.

Woj: Barring unlikely waiver claim, DeAndre Jordan expected to sign with Sixers

Barring an unlikely waiver claim, DeAndre Jordan is expected to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Philadelphia 76ers are continuing to put together their roster as they steam towards the playoffs over these final 21 games. They already have their new superstar duo in the form of James Harden and Joel Embiid, but they now need to make moves around the margins.

One name that has been popping up recently has been DeAndre Jordan who was waived recently by the Los Angeles Lakers. The veteran big man out of Texas A&M would fill a role in Philadelphia backing up Embiid after the Sixers had to move Andre Drummond in the Harden deal.

Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Jordan is expected to sign with the Sixers barring an unlikely waiver claim before the 5 p.m. EST deadline on Thursday.

Jordan is clearly not the same player he once was, but at the same time, he is a veteran who can throw down some lobs. He also has experience playing for coach Doc Rivers while with the Los Angeles Clippers where he was named to the All-NBA First Team.

Lakers coach Frank Vogel says DeAndre Jordan wanted to go to Sixers

Los Angeles Lakers coach Frank Vogel says DeAndre Jordan wants to go to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Philadelphia 76ers have been in need of a new backup big man after sending Andre Drummond to the Brooklyn Nets in the deal that brought James Harden to the City of Brotherly Love. Without Drummond, the Sixers need someone to back up Joel Embiid.

Philadelphia has been utilizing Paul Millsap as the backup to Embiid, but at this point, the 16-year veteran has lost a step even though he can still provide some shooting. At the same time, the Sixers still need to find an option and DeAndre Jordan might be that guy for them.

The Los Angeles Lakers released Jordan and the Sixers have already been known to pursue the veteran out of Texas A&M. Lakers coach Frank Vogel revealed on Tuesday that Jordan wants to go to the Sixers due to what he believes will be a bigger opportunity.

Per Lakers beat writer Jovan Buha, Jordan wanted Philadelphia all along.

It will be interesting to see if this does come to fruition. It does appear that the writing is on the wall for the Sixers to sign Jordan. The corresponding move might be waiting for the 10-day deal of Willie Cauley-Stein to expire. At this point, it appears that Jordan will be a Sixer.

Report: Sixers expected to make a run at Lakers buyout DeAndre Jordan

The Philadelphia 76ers are expected to pursue recent Los Angeles Lakers buyout big man DeAndre Jordan.

The Philadelphia 76ers are still in the middle of trying to fortify their roster before the 2022 playoffs begin. While they made their big move back on Feb. 10 to acquire superstar James Harden, they still need a backup big man.

The Sixers did acquire Paul Millsap in the Harden deal, but they could still stand to add somebody else in the buyout market.

The Los Angeles Lakers just waived veteran big man DeAndre Jordan and the Sixers are now expected to make a run at the 14-year veteran out of Texas A&M. Jordan played in 32 games for the Lakers and he averaged 4.1 points and 5.4 rebounds in 12.8 minutes per game.

The Sixers moved Andre Drummond to the Brooklyn Nets in the Harden deal so they have been in need of somebody to replace him. Jordan is not the same guy who once made the All-NBA First Team, but he can bring an ability as somebody who can roll to the basket and catch lobs.

Richard Jefferson turned DeAndre Jordan’s hilariously bad pass into a Lakers punchline

Amazing.

The Los Angeles Lakers had one of their more embarrassing performances of the season Sunday night. It was so bad that every mistake was seemingly turning into a joke.

The Lakers lost to the New Orleans Pelicans, 123-95, in a game that the Lakers trailed by as much as 32 points. Like, it was rough — really rough. The fans booed the Lakers off the court during a third-quarter timeout. The most ruthless line, though, probably came after DeAndre Jordan’s errant, three-quarter-court pass that landed in the seats.

ESPN analyst and former NBA player Richard Jefferson proceeded to roast the Lakers with some excellent banter as the blowout unfolded.

Report: Lakers could buyout Kent Bazemore, DeAndre Jordan

The Los Angeles Lakers reportedly want to dump the contracts of Kent Bazemore and DeAndre Jordan.

With the 2022 NBA trade deadline just two days away, the Los Angeles Lakers are among the teams looking to shuffle the roster.

Kent Bazemore and DeAndre Jordan are two names that have emerged as trade candidates for a while now. After beginning the season as starters, both fell hard out of the rotation.

Even if they are not traded, their days in the purple and gold seem to be numbered. According to Jovan Buha and Bill Oram of The Athletic, the Lakers could dump their contracts soon:

Other than trying to move Horton-Tucker and/or Nunn, the next-most likely move for the Lakers would be dumping the contract of one of DeAndre Jordan or Kent Bazemore, either via trade or buyout, according to league sources. The goal would be to both save money on their $150-plus million cap sheet and to create an additional roster spot, according to league sources.

Moving on from both players is basically a must for the Lakers. They no longer contribute, and parting ways would open two vital roster spots.

There’s no guarantee the Lakers will land solid players via the buyout market this season — they got Andre Drummond and Ben McLemore as buyouts last season — because time will tell who is available. The path to quality players is limited, so let’s see what’s in store in the next 48 hours.
