Cutting DeAndre Baker would cost Giants $7.6 million in dead cap

If the New York Giants were to outright release CB DeAndre Baker, it would cost them nearly $7.6 million in dead cap.

The New York Giants have an important decision to make on cornerback DeAndre Baker, who is facing four counts of armed robbery with a firearm and four counts of aggravated assault after allegedly holding up a party on Wednesday evening.

Not only is Baker facing some serious — very serious — legal troubles, he’s also been remarkably detached from the team. He reportedly fell asleep during meetings in 2019 and has skipped first-year head coach Joe Judge’s voluntary minicamp this week.

Judge was undoubtedly displeased with Baker from the jump, so his pending arrest certainly doesn’t help — especially for a coach who is determined to eliminate all distractions.

So what are the Giants, Judge and general manager Dave Gettleman to do?

The obvious answer is to cut Baker, but that will come with its own series of pitfalls. Baker would account for nearly $7.6 million in dead cap in 2020, which is something the Giants could fight to have eliminated due to violations of multiple league-wide policies, but that would be a long-winded process.

It would make a statement, however. It would show that Judge is the new Sheriff in town and that things of this nature simply will not be tolerated (nor should they be).

But it’s always difficult to give up on talent, especially when you’ve invested so heavily. So instead, expect the Giants to allow the NFL to hand down the suspension and then wait out “the legal process” for however long that takes.

Still, what Gettleman and Judge say next will determine how they’re viewed by ownership, reporters, fans and Giants players alike.

Report: Giants’ DeAndre Baker skipped the team’s voluntary minicamp

New York Giants CB DeAndre Baker had reportedly been skipping the team’s voluntary minicamp, which had been held virtually.

New York Giants cornerback DeAndre Baker allegedly fell asleep during team meetings in 2019, but that pales in comparison to the situation he currently finds himself in.

Baker is facing four counts of armed robbery with a firearm and four counts of aggravated assault after he, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar and a third party reportedly held up a private party on Wednesday night.

Although the Giants have been in contact with Baker since the Miramar Police Department issued an arrest warrant, they had apparently not heard from him previously.

Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports that Baker had been absent during the team’s voluntary virtual minicamp this week, including on Thursday when news of his pending arrest dropped.

The entire situation is alarming for the most obvious of reasons, and it’s clear that Baker’s issues extend well beyond the football field. He appears disinterested in the game, disinterested in his career and disinterested in the Giants, who had been relying heavily on him entering 2020.

How the Giants intend to handle the situation remains to be seen, but it’s hard to envision the team hanging onto Baker given his detachment from the organization and the very serious problems he now faces off of the field.

Giants CB DeAndre Baker faces a mandatory 10 years if convicted

New York Giants CB DeAndre Baker faces a mandatory 10-year prison sentence if convicted of armed robbery.

An arrest warrant was issued for New York Giants cornerback DeAndre Baker on Thursday night after the former first-round pick allegedly robbed several partygoers the day prior.

Baker, who carried out the alleged heist with Seattle Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar and a third party, has been charged with four counts of armed robbery with a firearm and four counts of aggravated assault.

The state of Florida carries a 10/20/life law, which means if convinced of armed robbery, Baker would face a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison up to life. Additionally, if convicted of aggravated assault, Baker could face an additional five years in prison or five years probation with a $5,000 fine.

According to the Miramar Police Department’s application for an arrest warrant, Baker also instructed a third party to shoot one of the partygoers. That did not occur, but had it, Baker would be facing life in prison.

Police had attempted to contact Baker by phone, but an initial call was terminated and subsequent calls have gone unanswered.

Baker remains at large and the Giants have issued only a short comment.

“We are aware of the situation,” a Giants spokesperson said. “We have been in contact with DeAndre. We have no further comment at this time.”

The NFL also refused to comment.

“We are aware of the matter but will decline further comment at this time,” a NFL spokesperson told the New York Post.

Arrest warrant issued for Seahawks Quinton Dunbar in armed robbery case

Quinton Dunbar and Deandre Baker both have warrants issued for their arrest in Miramar, Florida stemming from an armed robbery.

Seattle Seahawks defensive back Quinton Dunbar and New York Giants cornerback Deandre Baker have been issued arrest warrants by the Miramar, FL. police department, stemming from an incident of armed robbery that is alleged to have occurred in the evening on Wednesday, May 13.

Dunbar is facing four charges of armed robbery with a firearm, while Baker is facing four charges of armed robbery as well as four charges of aggravated assault.

The events in question occurred at a party on Wednesday evening, where Baker and Dunbar were in attendance and playing cards and video games. A fight broke out and Baker took out a semi-automatic weapon, pointing it at party guests and insisting they give up their money and watches – which Dunbar assisted in collecting at Baker’s direction.

There are conflicting reports on whether or not Dunbar himself was carrying a weapon, but it is believed he was aiding in the crimes being committed, according to multiple witnesses.

Dunbar was acquired by the Seahawks for a fifth-round pick earlier in the offseason. He held a press conference with assembled Seattle media via Zoom on Thursday morning, just a few hours after the incident allegedly occurred, discussing how well he fits with the team’s defensive schemes and how excited he is to come to Seattle.

Now, his debut in the Emerald City likely will not happen in Week 1, as he could face a suspension from the league.

The Seahawks released a statement shortly after the story became public, simply saying they are aware of the situation and deferring further comment to league investigators.

This story is continuing to develop.

Arrest warrant issued for Giants CB DeAndre Baker

An arrest warrant was issued for Giants CB DeAndre Baker.

An arrest warrant has been issued for New York Giants cornerback DeAndre Baker in Broward County, Florida on four counts of armed robbery with a firearm and four counts of aggravated assault with a firearm.

An arrest warrant was also issued for Seattle Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar. The full affidavit says Baker was armed with a semi-automatic firearm.

The Giants acknowledged the situation and released a statement on the matter Thursday after the issue of the warrant was made public.

“We are aware of the situation. We have been in contact with DeAndre. We have no further comment at this time.”

Baker was a first-round pick with the Giants during the 2019 NFL Draft. They traded back into the first round to get him giving up the Nos. 37, 132 and 142 picks.

Baker finished his rookie season playing 16 games (15 starts) while recording 61 tackles (48 solo), eight passes defended and 2.0 tackles for loss.

Georgia HC Kirby Smart believes in New York Giants CB Deandre Baker

Georgia football HC Kirby Smart believes that New York Giants CB Deandre Baker will get to where he wants to go.

The New York Giants traded up into the first round to select Georgia cornerback Deandre Baker in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Coming out Athens, Baker was viewed as one of the best lockdown defensive backs in the draft class after having a sensational 2018 season in which he won the Jim Thorpe Award, given to college football’s top defensive back.

But Baker struggled to adjust to the NFL game during his rookie season, with opposing quarterbacks often picking on the Miami native.

For the first half of the NFL season, it was not looking good for Baker or the Giants. He was getting beat regularly, giving up a ton of room to receivers to make easy catches and was being targeted by opposing quarterbacks.

There were even reports of Baker falling asleep during Giants’ team or position group meetings.

It should be noted, however, that Baker eventually turned it on in the later part of the season for the Giants.

But despite his early rookie season struggles, his former Georgia coach, Kirby Smart, still believes Baker can become one of the NFL’s best cornerbacks.

“I think that’s a part to growing up,” Smart told the New York Post. “I’ll say this, there’s not many rookie corners that aren’t going to struggle in that league. It’s not like they’re giving out Rookie of the Year to corners real often. Because when you’re doing your job, you don’t get a lot of credit, and when you’re not doing your job, you’re a sieve. So it’s usually going to go to a pass rusher or a linebacker who can put great statistics up there.

“When you’re on the back end you’re the last line of defense so that’s what everybody sees. Those three corners who were picked [in the first round this year], they’ll probably be the same way. They’re going to be under the limelight a lot more. I know Deandre will get better and he’ll keep working at it.”

Being a first round draft pick yields a lot of pressure, and one guy who knows a lot about that pressure is Giants running back Saquon Barkley.

Barkley talked with the New York Post about Baker and his rookie season.

“When you come in as a first-rounder, everyone sets expectations for you and there are expectations that you set for yourself and the kind of player you want to be,’’ Barkley told The Post on Friday. “Bake comes in every single day and works to get better and better. Obviously, he probably didn’t start the season how he would like to start his career. But these last couple weeks, he’s been playing lights out. He was a big reason why we got our first win in a while last week.’’

Former New York Giant Carl Banks defends Deandre Baker after rocky NFL start

Former New York Giants linebacker Carl Banks said former Georgia football corner Deandre Baker is capable after mediocre rookie year.

Former New York Giants linebacker Carl Banks, now a Giants radio commentator and analyst, defended former Georgia cornerback Deandre Baker recently.

Banks said on Twitter that the Giants 2019 first-round pick is capable, but he has to show willingness to learn coming off a rough rookie year.

The former Georgia corner was a dominant defensive presence for the Bulldogs in his time in Athens. In 2018 at Georgia, Baker was a All-American and Jim Thorpe Award winner. (given to the country’s top defensive back)

Baker’s performance at UGA hasn’t exactly translated to the NFL yet. In his first year, Baker had seven touchdowns scored against him where he was the closest defender on the field. A big contrast to his four years at Georgia where he only allowed one touchdown. However, after a rocky start to his rookie season, Baker picked it up and began playing like we knew he could.

Via the New York Post:

“To whom much is given much is expected,” Banks said. “If he wasn’t held accountable and he didn’t have a structure by which he should have been held accountable from play to play, series to series, then you can expect that.’’

With the Giants hire of new head coach Joe Judge from the Patriots, Baker should have plenty of opportunities to improve and prove himself as a first-round pick moving forward.

Kirby Smart still believes in Giants CB DeAndre Baker

Georgia’s Kirby Smart still believes New York Giants CB DeAndre Baker can excel at the NFL level and become a lock-down corner.

When the New York Giants traded back up into the first round to select Georgia cornerback DeAndre Baker in the 2019 NFL Draft, many believed they were getting a plug-and-play starter.

To some degree, they did. Baker earned the team’s starting job, but to say his NFL career got off to a rough start would be an understatement.

Baker looked over-matched and disinterested for the first half of his rookie season, there were reports that he had been called out by his teammates and some additional reports suggesting he fell asleep during team meetings.

However, as the season wore on, Baker got more comfortable and rounded into shape. His play on the field improved, he became more attentive in meetings and he shoulder responsibility for his earlier struggles.

Despite the rough and tumble nature of Baker’s first season, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart still believes the young cornerback can become one of the NFL’s best.

“I think that’s a par to growing up,” Smart told the New York Post.

The Giants went out and signed veteran cornerback James Bradberry in free agency, nabbed Dravon Askew-Henry from the XFL and selected Darnay Holmes in Round 4 of the 2020 NFL Draft, but despite the influx of talent and all that remains on the roster, Baker should still start across from Bradberry this season.
