Why Bengals fans should be excited about Dax Hill

Breaking down what Michigan defensive back Dax Hill brings to the Cincinnati Bengals as the No. 31 overall pick in he 2022 NFL draft

Heading into the 2022 NFL draft, the Cincinnati Bengals’ biggest need was in the secondary, and they solved it with one of the most versatile defenders in the entire class.

The defending AFC champs spent the No. 31 overall pick on Michigan’s Dax Hill, who should be a perfect fit in the varied Lou Anarumo defense.

Hill is a uniquely versatile defensive back who played mostly at safety for the Wolverines, but possess the athleticism, quickness, and coverage skills to play the nickel spot at a high level. He has impressive range and change-of-direction ability, shadowing pass-catchers on underneath routes, and keeping up with receivers both inside and out, with fluid hips that can track and explode with those routes.

He’ll likely play the nickelback role for the Bengals right away, and move around to wherever his defense asks him. He will add to a secondary that turned their game up late last year, and add unique versatility that wasn’t previously present on the roster.

2022 NFL draft: 10 prospects who are perfect fits for the Eagles defensive scheme

2022 NFL draft: 10 prospects who are perfect fits for Jonathan Gannon and the Philadelphia Eagles’ defense

The Eagles will enter Thursday night’s first round of the NFL draft with 10-picks and immediate opportunities to add dynamic playmakers on the defensive side of the football.

Last year at this time, Jonathan Gannon was being introduced to the media and trying to describe his defensive scheme to inquiring minds.

Rather than describe a 4-3, or 3-4 scheme to the masses, Gannon spoke of versatility and adaptation while adopting 4 key principles to his defensive philosophy: H.I.T.S

Hustle

Intensity

Takeaways

Smarts

Gannon has previously referenced the Bears Matt Eberflus, Emmitt Thomas, Jerry Gray, and his biggest coaching influence, former Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer.

A mostly two-high safety, press-man scheme, that’ll employ a 4-2-5 nickel package in this pass-happy NFL, Gannon’s goal is to utilize cornerbacks that can deal with big wide receivers, while his interchangeable safeties make plays on the backend.

Gannon will focus on stopping the run while mixing up coverage with the back 7.

With Philadelphia looking to greatly improve on defense in 2022, here are 10 prospects that’ll immediately fit Gannon’s scheme.

Could the Eagles double-dip at the safety position early in NFL Draft?

Could the Philadelphia Eagles double-dip at the safety position early in NFL Draft?

The Eagles have several needs in this weekend’s NFL, but none bigger than addressing the lack of dynamic playmakers at the safety position.

The Eagles re-signed Anthony Harris this offseason but still have a pretty clear need at the safety position.

Rodney McLeod moved on to the Colts and Philadelphia has been in the mix for all-world safety, Tyrann Mathieu.

Even after the Eagles’ trade with the Saints, they still have two first-round picks and 10 total, allowing for numerous opportunities to add versatility at a position that has several dynamic prospects.

Philadelphia could even look to add multiple safeties in the draft, with several prospects carrying the hybrid role, that allows for players like Dax Hill, Jalen Pitre, or Kyle Hamilton to play at all three levels.

Mock draft watch: A Wolverine double-dip for Detroit in Draft Wire’s latest

The Lions add two instant defensive starters from the Wolverines in this projection

The concept of drafting college teammates to the same NFL team is not always a popular one, but one current mock draft explores that idea for the Detroit Lions and bolsters the defense in the process.

The latest first-round projection from our friends at Draft Wire sees the Lions double up on Michigan Wolverine defensive prospects. It adds two instant starters at the two positions of highest need: EDGE and safety.

First up is Aidan Hutchinson at No. 2 overall. With the recent trend toward Georgia’s Travon Walker going in the top spot to Jacksonville, Hutchinson to his hometown Lions is also growing in popularity.

At No. 32, safety Dax Hill joins Hutchinson in staying close to Ann Arbor. Hill’s ability to play as a coverage safety or a slot corner makes him in high demand in the range at the end of the first round. Both players were at the Lions’ local day workout on Monday.

Lions hold ‘local day’ workout for wide range of NFL draft prospects

The local day is a workout and different from the pre-draft visits

The Detroit Lions hosted a diverse group of locally-based 2022 NFL draft prospects at the team facility in Allen Park on Monday for the annual “local day” workout. The range of players ran the gamut from potential No. 1 overall pick Aidan Hutchinson to a Dutch TE (via Eastern Michigan) Thomas Odukoya, who projects as an undrafted free agent.

The local day is different from the regular pre-draft visit. This is more of an actual football tryout for the players, a chance to show what they can do on the field. On-field activities are strictly forbidden on pre-draft visits, which are also (mistakenly) known as “top 30 visits”. This workout is limited to college players who fall within the Lions’ league-defined local area, either by college or from high schools in the area.

Among those who were slated to be in attendance for the closed event:

  • Cincinnati CB Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner
  • Michigan RB Hassan Haskins
  • Michigan EDGE Aidan Hutchinson
  • Saginaw Valley State WR Chad Gailliard
  • Princeton LB Jeremiah Tyler
  • Michigan S Dax Hill
  • Eastern Michigan TE Thomas Odukoya
  • Wisconsin S Scott Nelson
  • Michigan DT Christopher Hinton
  • Ferris State OL Zein Obeid
  • Western Illinois QB Connor Sampson
  • Michigan OL Andrew Steuber
  • Michigan S Brad Hawkins
  • Western Michigan LB/S A.J. Thomas

Patriots 7-round mock draft: Reading way too deeply into NFL combine buzz

The Patriots draft a receiver late — and trade for one. Their top pick is a big surprise.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick attended this year’s NFL combine, even with a number of teams — including Los Angeles Rams — electing not to send their top brass. It seems teams are deemphasizing the event dubbed the underwear Olympics.

If nothing else, the event serves as a chance for the media to catch up with NFL evaluators. Reporters can chat with teams’ decision-makers to learn where the top players stand. And with so many measurements coming out, draft analysts can confirm what they’ve seen on tape — or flag a player whose measurements don’t add up with their performance.

Regardless, now is the time to overreact to all this information. Now is the time to have some fun and put together a mock draft that overvalues the combine. Let’s dive into some of the combine’s stars that could land with New England.
