WATCH: Michigan State basketball G Davis Smith hits first career three-pointer against Georgia Southern

Davis Smith hits first career three-pointer against Georgia Southern

Since 2020, Michigan State basketball guard Davis Smith has been a beloved member of the MSU program, following in the footsteps of his legendary father, Steve Smith.

While Davis has been a great part of the team, he hasn’t played many minutes, and last night, he finally hit his first three-pointer in a blowout win over Georgia Southern in a memorable moment for the Spartans.

Michigan State basketball G Davis Smith withdraws name from NCAA transfer portal

MSU basketball guard Davis Smith withdraws name from transfer portal

We saw it a few times with the football team where a player has entered their name into the NCAA transfer portal, and now we’ve seen it with the Michigan State basketball team as well, as Davis Smith withdrew his name over the weekend.

Davis, the son of MSU legend Steve Smith, has been a reserve player for the Spartans, and was set to transfer this offseason, but has decided to come back for another season with the Spartans.

Davis didn’t play more than 4 minutes in a game last year so it’s unclear if Izzo plans to use him on the wing in certain situations. It is good to have the son of a legend back on the roster, but I do think it’s uneasy timing since many are still hoping to see MSU active in the transfer portal.

Michigan State basketball expecting to be without a few players against High Point

The Spartans are going to be without a few key pieces in Wednesday’s game against High Point

In a pregame press conference ahead of Michigan State’s tilt with High Point on Wednesday, head coach Tom Izzo announced that the Spartans are going to be without several different players.

It appears the Spartans will be without Marcus Bingham, Max Christie, Pierre Brooks and Steven Izzo. Davis Smith is also a player that could be in danger of missing the game.

The tenth-ranked Spartans will look to win their eleventh game of the season, while the Panthers of High Point will look to improve to 7-6 on the season.

Michigan State basketball guard Davis Smith put on scholarship

Michigan State basketball guard Davis Smith put on scholarship

No matter what, it’s always cool to see a walk-on player earn a scholarship. Some fans might get frustrated by that at times, hoping that scholarship could be used on a talented recruit or transfer, you have to be happy for someone like Davis Smith, a former walk-on with Michigan State basketball who is now officially on scholarship with the Spartans.

Tom Izzo delivered the news in his preseason press conference on Wednesday. He also made sure to note that Smith didn’t get handed the scholarship because his dad is Spartan legend Steve Smith:

Michigan State basketball unveils the 2020-21 roster

Michigan State basketball has unveiled the 2020 roster with new player numbers. See which player has changed their number here.

[jwplayer ofLF0moh]

The hype for Michigan State basketball’s 2020 season is absolutely real. Today, the team released the new 2020-21 lineup along with new numbers for certain players. The first thing that jumps out to me is the inclusion of no. 1, Joshua Langford!

Aaron Henry has changed his number to no. 0 so incoming 4-star PG AJ Hoggard can wear no. 11. Also, incoming 4-star Center Mady Sissoko will be wearing no. 22 this season.

Lastly, it’s pretty cool that Steve Smith’s son, Davis Smith, is joining the team as a walk-on. He will wear no. 14, which used to belong to Brock Washington.

Check out a nice graphic below from the Michigan State basketball Twitter account:

As of right now, it seems like the 2020-21 NCAA basketball season is headed towards a bubble-like setup, similar to the 2020 NBA playoffs. Let’s hope they pull this off so we can all enjoy some college hoops.
