Titans claim David Long off waivers from the Lions

Titans claim LB David Long off waivers from the Lions, a day after Detroit released the veteran backer

David Long’s time with the Detroit Lions has come to a complete end. A day after the Lions released the veteran linebacker, Long was claimed off waivers by the Tennessee Titans.

Long played his first four seasons with the Titans, from 2019-2022. The Lions poached Long from the Miami Dolphins earlier this year. He played in five games for Detroit as an injury-related emergency option.

All players who are released at this time of year are subject to waivers, and the Titans have one of the first waiver claim spots. With just two weeks to play in the season, Long figures to be locked in with the 3-12 Titans. The Lions are poised to get LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin and perhaps LB Alex Anzalone back before the end of the regular season.

Lions waive veteran LB, bring back Maurice Alexander to the practice squad

The move is an indication that the Lions appear ready to activate a linebacker off the injured reserve list

In a move that indicates the team is getting a healthy return to the defensive lineup, the Detroit Lions released veteran linebacker David Long on Tuesday.

Long, 28, spent five weeks with the Lions after coming from the Miami Dolphins. The off-ball backer started one game, the Thanksgiving win over the Bears, and saw action on defense in three others. Long only played on special teams in the Week 16 rematch against the Bears.

In total, Long recorded seven tackles, one TFL and recovered one fumble.

With Jalen Reeves-Maybin already into his 21-day activation window, the move is a sign that Long’s services are no longer needed by the Lions.

Detroit also brought back wide receiver/kick returner Maurice Alexander to the practice squad.

Tracking what jersey numbers all the new Lions are wearing

Tracking what jersey numbers all the new Detroit Lions signees from the past few weeks are wearing

All of the injuries across the Detroit Lions defense have led to the addition of several recent reinforcements. The Lions have signed seven new defensive players in the last couple of weeks.

Between all the comings and goings from the Lions roster, it can be hard to keep up with who is on the field at times. In that spirit, here are the jersey numbers of all the recent defensive additions to the Lions roster, including the practice squad players who might be called up to play in Week 14 against the Packers.

LB Jamal Adams – 25*

DL Myles Adams – 66

LB Kwon Alexander – 10

LB David Long – 43

S Kaevon Merriweather – 27*

LB Ezekiel Turner – 47

DL Jonah Williams – 78

Update: Not long after publication, the Buccaneers signed Merriweather off the Lions’ practice squad.

Lions sign 2 players from the practice squad, elevate Jamarco Jones vs Bears

The Lions had two roster openings after placing Kalif Raymond on I.R. and they filled them internally ahead of Thanksgiving

The Detroit Lions were busy with some roster moves on Wednesday, the day before the team hosts the Chicago Bears in Ford Field.

As was previously reported, the Lions placed wide receiver and return man Kalif Raymond on injured reserve. Raymond suffered a foot injury returning a punt in the Week 12 win over the Colts.

To fill Raymond’s spot, the Lions signed wideout Maurice Alexander from the team’s practice squad. Alexander also has considerable experience returning punts and kicks, which has been Raymond’s primary role of late.

The Lions also signed linebacker David Long from the practice squad to the active roster. Long made his Detroit debut in Week 12 as a practice squad elevation, playing 13 defensive snaps in the win in Indianapolis. His roster spot was opened when the Lions released James Houston on Tuesday.

For the Thanksgiving game, the Lions also elevated veteran offensive tackle Jamarco Jones from the practice squad. It’s the second elevation for Jones, who played left tackle for an injured Taylor Decker in the win in Houston. Decker is injured again, this time with a leg injury suffered during a play in Week 12. Decker has been ruled out for Thursday’s game.

David Long: What the Lions are getting in their new LB

Breaking down the game film and scouting report on new Lions LB David Long, signed to the practice squad to help replace Alex Anzalone

Despite demolishing the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, the Detroit Lions did receive some bad news regarding linebacker Alex Anzalone. It was confirmed yesterday that Anzalone will miss the remainder of the regular season with a broken forearm.

The injury occurred while Anzalone was making a tackle on Jaguars running back Travis Etienne with 2:32 left in the second quarter. As Etienne was getting near the sidelines, his left arm got caught between the running back and his teammate Brian Branch.

Fortunately, it does sound like Anzalone could return for the playoffs as he’s expected to only miss 6 – 8 weeks. To fill the void, the Lions will need players such as Malcolm Rodriguez and Jack Campbell to step up for the defense. In addition to that, the Lions signed linebacker David Long to their practice squad.

Rated as one of the best linebackers in football in 2023, Long being available was somewhat surprising last week. However, Long had lost his starting job on the Dolphins defense and he ended up being released on November 13, 2024.

Prior to playing a season and a half with the Dolphins, he had spent four seasons with the Tennessee Titans. Originally, he was drafted by the Titans in the 6th round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of West Virginia. Let’s dive into some film to see what the Lions are getting with linebacker David Long!

Starting with where I think Long could be best suited for Detroit and that would be whenever blitzing. As we know, the Lions have had to get creative in generating pressure with the loss of Aidan Hutchinson. Using different blitzes and line stunts, the Lions could get creative to get Long in the backfield.

Looking at the play above, you can see a clear blitz from Long (LB 11). He times the snap well and blitzes through the B-gap. In the process, he slips under the right tackle, who is trying to pull and kick him out. However, Long does a great job ripping underneath and making a tackle in the backfield.

Through the first four weeks of the season, Long was ranked 3rd in PFF’s tackle-for-loss rate database. In 65 run-defense snaps, he had earned a 6.15% tackle-for-loss rate. The hope for Detroit is that they can tap into some of what he was doing so well to start the season.

Staying with Long’s performance against the Bills from earlier this season, we go to my favorite play from him on tape. Through the four games that I watched, there were certainly some head scratching reads and plays from Long. However, the play above is a perfect example of Long playing with conviction and violence.

Looking at the play above, Long (LB 11) is aligned in a ’10’ (between guard and center) and he makes a great read. As he begins to trigger downhill, he’s met by Bills LT 73 Dion Dawkins. Rather than waiting for Dawkins to get square and seal him off, Long shocks and sheds the blocker.

As he creates separation, he’s able to see on either side of the blocker. Once he sees the running back make his cut, he slips underneath and makes a terrific tackle at the hole. This was textbook from Long, and the hope is the Lions can get him back to playing like that.

While the previous play was a great highlight, I do want to reiterate that it’s not all sunshine and rainbows when watching Long play. There are times that he looks hesitant, plays too slow or too fast or he simply just makes the wrong read.

When you’re a younger player, you can get away with that. However, when you’re a 6-year veteran and ranked as one of the top run defenders in the league over a period of time, it’s hard to justify bad performances when they stack up. That happens to be the case for David Long.

For example, when you look at the two clips posted above, we’ll start with the first one against Arizona. Long reads the zone blocks being executed by the Cardinals offensive line but as the play continues, he gets impatient and gets burned. Assuming that the running back is going to cut back, Long would have looked like a stud.

Instead, he looks somewhat foolish for trying to get around 3 players. He then goes for the tackle but instead of a good form tackle, he arm tackles and the running back continues up field from there.

Lastly, the second clip is against Jacksonville. Aligned in a ’20’ (head up over the guard), you can see Long’s initial steps go to his right. Much of that is due to him falling for the “eye candy” that is the pulling right guard. Fortunately, he recovers nicely due to his ability to change direction, get over the top and meet the running back in the C-gap.

So as you can see, there’s some pretty good play from Long and then there’s some head scratching plays. That tends to be the case for any player who ends up getting released during the middle of the season.

Early in the year against the Jaguars and Bills, it’s evident that Long was playing like his old self. However, he suffered a hamstring injury against the Seattle Seahawks in week 3 and he hasn’t looked right ever since. That could be causing him to play with that hesitation or that could be why he just looks slow on tape at times.

Fortunately, Long comes to a place like Detroit where they just get the best out of their players. They made it work with Charles Harris for two years. Defensive lineman John Cominsky looked like he was on his way out of the league but he’s been with the Lions for three seasons. It’s just how this team is coached and you better believe that David Long will be held to a high standard.

The Lions play the Indianapolis Colts this week and then have a quick turnaround to play the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving. If I had to guess, it’s unlikely that we’ll see Long play for the Lions during those two games. However, we could see him suit up against the Green Bay Packers in three weeks or potentially the Buffalo Bills the game after that. Regardless, it’ll take some time for him to get adjusted to the Lions defensive scheme.

While the Lions continue to battle through injuries on defense, they still push forward to the best record in the NFL and NFC. By adding David Long, the Lions could certainly use him for that late season push.

Lions add defensive help to the active roster, place Anzalone on I.R.

The Lions added a veteran LB and activated (with an asterisk) Ifeatu Melifonwu, while placing Anzalone on I.R.

The Detroit Lions made some injury-forced roster moves on Monday. The most notable is placing linebacker Alex Anzalone on the injured reserve list a day after the defensive captain broke his forearm in the team’s blowout win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Replacing Anzalone on the active roster will be safety Ifeatu Melifonwu, who was activated off injured reserve. That activation probably deserves an asterisk, as Melifonwu is poised to be sidelined again with a new finger injury suffered last week in practice.

“Well, look, because this is going to come up anyway, he had something come up and he’s not going to be – he won’t be ready for a while,” Campbell said of Melifonwu. “He’s not going to be ready for a while.”

The Lions also added veteran linebacker David Long to the practice squad. Long was recently released by the Miami Dolphins after losing his role in their defense.

Indianapolis Colts make cornerback addition to 53-man roster

The Indianapolis Colts announced an addition at cornerback to the active roster on Tuesday. Here is what you need to know.

After waiving cornerback Dallis Flowers on Monday, the Indianapolis Colts announced that they’ve signed cornerback David Long from the practice squad to the 53-man roster to take Flowers’ place.

The Colts originally signed Long to the practice squad prior to Week 1 of the regular season.

At 5-11 – 196 pounds, Long was a third-round pick by the Los Angeles Rams in 2019. Coming into this season, he had appeared in 67 games in his career with 43 starts.

In 2023, Long spent time with Carolina, Green Bay, and Las Vegas. He played 193 combined defensive snaps with the Panthers and Raiders and was a special teams contributor with the Packers.

Before joining the Colts in early September, Long spent the offseason with the New York Giants.

Over his career, Long has been a sound tackler, making 92 of his 103 tackle attempts, according to PFF. In coverage, he’s allowed a completion rate of 68.8 percent on 109 targets at 12.2 yards per catch with one interception and six pass breakups.

He has also played 559 career special teams snaps and won a Super Bowl with the Rams in 2021.

This season with the Colts, Long was elevated from the practice squad to the game-day roster in Weeks 4 and 5. He’s played 12 snaps on teams and no defensive snaps.

The addition of Long to the 53-man roster gives the Colts much-needed depth at the cornerback position. Although Sam Womack was sharing time with Flowers opposite of Jaylon Jones, I will guess that Womack will be the full time starter with Long available off the bench if needed.

With an opening on the practice squad following the addition of Long to the active roster, the Colts brought back running back Trent Pennix.

Pennix spent the offseason and a portion of training camp with the Colts before being waived/injured following the first preseason game. He was then signed to the practice squad last week with Jonathan Taylor not practicing and was released on Saturday prior to the game against Jacksonville.

Colts sign veteran cornerback to practice squad

The Colts announced that they’ve now filled their practice squad, signing a veteran cornerback.

The Indianapolis Colts announced on Monday afternoon that they signed veteran cornerback David Long to the practice squad.

With this addition, the Colts’ practice squad is now at full capacity.

Listed at 5-11 – 196 pounds, Long was a third-round pick by the Los Angeles Rams in 2019, appearing in 67 games during his NFL career, with 43 starts.

Long would spend this offseason with the New York Giants. In 2023, he was with the Carolina Panthers, Green Bay Packers, and the Las Vegas Raiders, playing 193 defensive snaps with the Panthers and Raiders, while being a special teams contributor with the Packers.

Over his career, Long has been a sound tackler, making 92 of his 103 tackle attempts, according to PFF. In coverage, he’s allowed a completion rate of 68.8 percent on 109 targets at 12.2 yards per catch with one interception and six pass breakups.

Long has also played 515 career special teams snaps as well and was a part of the Rams’ 2021 Super Bowl team.

The margin for error at the cornerback position for the Colts is quite thin, with question marks at both the starting boundary positions and the overall depth of the unit. The addition of Long provides some experienced depth and added help on special teams if needed.

Grading the Dolphins linebackers after their 2023 season

A look at Miami’s linebackers, and the year they had in 2023.

The Miami Dolphins finished their 2023 campaign with an 11-6 record and made the postseason for the second time in as many years under head coach Mike McDaniel. Unfortunately, it came to an end with a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the wild-card round.

While other teams are in the midst of their playoff run, it’s time to do some reflecting on the team in South Florida.

Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be reviewing and evaluating different positions for the Dolphins in 2023. Today, we’ll look at the linebackers.

Dolphins react to being eliminated from the playoffs

What players had to say about the loss and their elimination from the playoffs

The Miami Dolphins lost to the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday night 26-7 which ended their 2023 season after just one playoff game.

Mike McDaniel’s team started the year off great, but a collapse against the Tennessee Titans late in the season and three straight losses to end it leaves a sour taste in everyone’s mouths around the organization and fan base.

After the game, McDaniel and a number of players, including quarterback Tua Tagovailoa addressed the loss and the season as a whole.
