Former Jets LB Darron Lee charged with domestic violence and assault in separate incidents

Former Jets linebacker Darron Lee arrested and charged with domestic violence and assault

Darron Lee, a former first-round linebacker for the New York Jets, was arrested Monday night on charges of domestic violence and assault, per The Columbus Dispatch and records from the Franklin County Municipal Court.

Lee is facing two counts each of misdemeanor domestic violence and misdemeanor assault. One pair of charges stems from an Oct. 17 incident, and another comes from an incident Monday.

Lee was being held at Franklin County Jail with a court appearance set for Tuesday morning. His bond was set at $20,000. He must stay away from the two alleged victims should he post bail.

Per the Dispatch:

Court records said officers were called after Lee reportedly punched the woman multiple times in the head during an argument. Both the female relative and the mother of Darron Lee’s child called police to report the incident.

According to a signed affidavit by Columbus police, the female relative told officers that Lee’s girlfriend had expressed concerns to her on Monday about not feeling safe around Lee. The relative had gone to speak with him in an upstairs bedroom of the home and tell him that he needed to leave the home.

Lee initially told police that the relative hit him first, but later recanted and said that discoloration on his cheek was a skin condition, according to court records.

The relative told officers that Lee became upset when she told him to leave and began yelling at her before grabbing her shirt and shoving her into a wall multiple times.

The investigation Monday also led police to learn about the alleged incident on Oct. 17 involving Lee and the mother of his child, an argument that authorities said began with Lee believing the woman cheated on him.

“(The woman) was laying on the bed and Darron got on top of her, with his knees making contact with her knees, and his left hand on her neck where it remained for approximately 60 seconds,” court records said. “During this time, (the woman) advised that Darron told her that he would kill her and their child.”

Lee was taken with the 20th overall selection in the 2016 NFL draft by the Jets. He played just three seasons in New York before being traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019. In 2020, he spent time with the Buffalo Bills before ending up with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021.

Athletic player comparisons for the Detroit Lions 2022 draft class

The Detroit Lions 2022 draft class athleticism compares favorably to strong NFL players and gives an idea what might be on the horizon

The dust has settled on the second Detroit Lions draft class under Brad Holmes, and a theme is starting to become quite clear. Under the Holmes/Campbell regime, they value high character players, especially those who were team captains. On top of that, they covet prospects with primer athleticism.

Detroit walked away with one of the top athletic classes in the 2022 draft and will look to continue building its foundation with potential cornerstone players and strong depth rounding out the roster. We will get our first glimpse of these prospects with minicamp right around the corner, but what kind of comparisons can we make on these players?

Using Player Profiler’s best player comparison feature and the Relative Athletic Score (RAS) tool, we can create a picture of what we could expect from these prospects from an athletic perspective.

Here are the best comparisons for the Lions 2022 draft class.

Raiders make three more moves to get down to 80-player limit

Raiders make three more moves to get down to 80-player limit

On Monday, the Raiders made several moves to get down to 83 players. The deadline is today and the team still needed to make three moves to get there. Those moves are now official.

They waived WR Marcell Ateman, waived/injured DT Darius Stills, and placed LB Darron Lee on injured reserve.

Ateman is a former seventh round pick by the Raiders. He has appeared in 18 games with six starters since he was drafted in 2018. He spent part of last season on the team’s practice squad. He is fresh off a couple nice catches against the Rams in last Saturday’s preseason game, including a 29-yard touchdown.

Stills is an undrafted rookie. He was showing potential until he broke his hand. He returned last week with a club cast and played in last week’s preseason game with it. Should he clear waivers, he can be placed on injured reserve. Then, should the Raiders choose, they can cut him with an injury settlement and bring him back once his hand is healed, perhaps on the practice squad.

Lee is a former first-round pick (20 overall) by the Jets. He spent three seasons in New York and has bounced around since then, staring just two games since 2018.

Ex-Jets LB Darron Lee signs with Raiders

Lee spent part of last season with the Buffalo Bills.

Former Jets linebacker Darron Lee has landed with his fourth NFL team.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Lee signed with the Las Vegas Raiders. The terms of the deal were not released.

The Jets made Lee a first-round pick out of Ohio State in 2016. He started right away as a rookie, but he had his fair share of struggles. Lee had the lowest Pro Football Focus grade among rookie linebackers (38.3), mainly because of his poor coverage skills. Lee recorded 73 tackles, three tackles for loss, three pass breakups, three quarterback hits, and one sack in his rookie year.

Lee’s sophomore season wasn’t much better, as he had a 34.9 Pro Football Focus grade, which ranked 87th out of 88 linebackers who qualified. The numbers improved for Lee, as he had 94 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, six quarterback hits, three sacks, three pass breakups and two forced fumbles.

The following season, it looked like Lee was finally becoming the player that the Jets thought they were getting when they drafted him 20th overall in 2016. He had 74 total tackles, five tackles for loss, five pass breakups, and two quarterback hits in 12 games. However, Lee was slapped with a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. That ultimately ended Lee’s Jets career, as the team declined his fifth-year option and then traded him to the Kansas City Chiefs for a 2020 sixth-round pick in May 2019.

Lee played one season with the Chiefs and got a Super Bowl ring in a limited role. He had 31 total tackles in 16 games in 2019. But Lee, a free agent at the time, was then suspended for the first four games of the 2020 season.

Eventually, the Bills signed Lee to their practice squad in November 2020. He was on the Bills’ active roster for two games and spent the rest of the season on the practice squad.

Former Ohio State linebacker Darron Lee reportedly signs with Raiders

Former Ohio State linebacker and first-round draft pick Darron Lee has reportedly signed a deal with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Former Ohio State linebacker and first-round draft pick Darron Lee has found himself a new home.

Since being selected by the New York Jets in the first round of the 2016 NFL draft, Lee has struggled to carve out a consistent role with a team. He was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs three years into his rookie contract with the Jets, but only saw limited playing time. He then signed a deal with the Buffalo Bills prior to the 2020 season but again was buried on the depth chart.

Now, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Lee will give it another go with a fourth team, the Las Vegas Raiders.

Despite the inability to carve out a niche in the NFL thus far, when he’s been on the field, Lee has been somewhat productive. He has 273 tackles, four sacks, and three interceptions over a five-year career that’s also seen him start 38 games.

The New Albany product will now look to revive his career alongside other former Buckeyes Damon Arnette, Johnathan Hankins, Liam McCullough.

When you have a former NFL Draft guru as your GM, it’s expected that you might see a few former highly thought of prospects given a chance to return to their former glory. Today the Raiders officially added linebacker Darron Lee, making him the latest example of that.

Mike Mayock had Lee as his third best LB prospect in the 2016 draft. Lee would be drafted by the Jets with the 20th overall pick. His career did not turn out as expected and by the 2020 season, Lee was trying to find his way onto an NFL roster, spending the entire season on the Bills’ practice squad.

Lee spent the first three seasons of his career in New York. His time there ended in 2018 when he was suspended four games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

He was given a second chance in 2019 with the Chiefs, but started just two games and seeing most of his time on special teams.

Along with Lee, the Raiders added veteran journeyman CB De’Vante Bausby. To make room on the roster they waived CB TJ Morrison.

Darron Lee wants another chance with Jets: ‘I will come and deliver’

Darron Lee wants a chance to redeem himself with the team that drafted him.

Darron Lee did not come close to living up to his potential in his first go-around with the Jets. Now he wants a second chance to make things right with the team that drafted him.

Lee took to Twitter on Thursday to campaign for a return to the Big Apple and a chance to play for Robert Saleh. The 26-year-old fell well short of expectations playing for Todd Bowles, but he believes a second stint with New York would bring out the best version of himself.

“#JetsNation didn’t get the full DLee,” Lee tweeted. “If Saleh would have me? I would come and deliver. I promise.”

Pegged as an ideal fit in Bowles’ defense due to his versatility coming out of Ohio State, Lee’s progression in New York ran stagnant. He was the lowest-graded rookie inside linebacker in the NFL by Pro Football Focus in 2016 and ranked 87th out of 88 qualified inside linebackers in 2017. Lee hit rock bottom in 2018, as he was hit with a four-game PED suspension to end the year. The Jets proceeded to decline his fifth-year option and traded Lee to the Chiefs in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft — a pick that was subsequently traded to the Colts for Quincy Wilson.

Lee won a Super Bowl with the Chiefs in 2019, but he did little to contribute throughout the season and was inactive for the big game. Kansas City did not re-sign Lee when he hit free agency last March and was suspended for the first four weeks of the 2020 season. He caught on with the Bills in November and was elevated to Buffalo’s active roster in Weeks 10 and 12, but was sent back down to the practice squad after each game.

The Jets could benefit from adding some inside linebacker depth this offseason, but Lee is likely not the answer they are looking for. Even with a new regime in place at One Jets Drive, it’s safe to assume any chance Lee gets to revive his carer in 2021 won’t come with New York.

Bills players mostly quiet on Washington D.C., Capitol news

Buffalo Bills players who mentioned the Washington D.C. and Capitol riots include RB Zack Moss, LB Darron Lee, LB Andre Smith, WR Kenny Stills.

As the Capitol building in Washington D.C. was invaded on Wednesday, the eyes of the world were watching. Considering that, members of the Bills certainly knew what was going on as well like all of us.

In many cases under such extreme circumstances, those connected to the club, such as players, were quiet on the manner. To each their own on the situation at-hand. We’re not here to say what is right and wrong, just to bring to light reactions made by others.

Most current Bills players had little to say on what was unfolding. Truthfully, only two really posted anything from their own personal Twitter accounts.

One was linebacker and special teamer Andre Smith via Twitter:

In addition to his own message, Smith also re-tweeted or shared a message from another professional athlete, NBA player Kevin Love which called the situation at the Capitol an “absolute disgrace.”

Practice squad linebacker Darron Lee was the most-active player in terms of their social media. He sent out several message:

Like Smith, Lee also tossed out re-tweets from NBA players, such as one from Steph Curry and some other NFL players and analysts, such as Saints linebacker Demario Davis.

Along with Smith and Lee, two others kept their thoughts to re-tweets only. New wide receiver Kenny Stills, who’s very much involved with social issues as he was arrested protesting himself this past offseason in Louisville for questioning the death of Breonna Taylor, shared a message about U.S. history:

The other was rookie running back Zack Moss who sent out a couple re-tweets, including this:

Former Bills players also remained mostly silent. Those who did not included some only loosely associated with the team, such as Hall of Fame wide receiver Terrell Owners and linebacker Shawne Merriman:

Bills call Darron Lee, multiple players up from practice squad due to COVID

Buffalo Bills make COVID-19 callups from practice squad.

The Bills (7-2) were dealt a curveball on Saturday ahead of facing the Cardinals (5-3) in Week 10.

Actually, it was more of a 12-6 or knuckle curve if we’re going to get deep into the baseball terms, but like hitting one of those pitches, the team had to be meticulous to deal with the situation.

On Saturday, the Bills announced that they would be without four players, in total, because of a positive COVID-19 test result in their locker room. Cornerback Josh Norman tested positive for the virus. Due to safety precautions via contact tracing, other players who also will not suit up includes tight end Tyler Kroft, cornerback Levi Wallace and safety Dean Marlowe.

That’s a big chunk of players that did not travel to Arizona. So in order to deal with the situation, five players were called up from the practice squad by the Bills on Saturday.

Those five players are:

  • LB Darron Lee
  • CB Daryl Worley
  • WR Jake Kumerow
  • S Josh Thomas
  • CB Dane Jackson

Lee was a former first-round pick of the Jets who recently signed with the Bills, as did Worley, who played for the Panthers in 2016 when Bills head coach Sean McDermott was still employed there.

Kumerow and Thomas were already called up from the practice squad once this season, playing special teams roles. Jackson, a seventh-round rookie, was called up twice this season and recorded an interception in one outing.

NFL rule changes this season state that a player can only be called up twice. But due to the emergency situation involving COVID-19, Jackson is allowed to be called up a third time without needing to be signed to the Bills’ 53-man roster.

Sean McDermott hints on if Darron Lee, new signees play vs. Seahawks

Buffalo Bills’ Sean McDermott on LB Darron Lee.

The Buffalo Bills did not make any moves at the 2020 NFL trade deadline which came and passed on Tuesday. But that doesn’t mean the Bills did not make any recent transactions.

Buffalo (6-2) added two players via free agency. That often happens, but those added were… intriguing. Not only because they play positions of need, but because of the players themselves. Linebacker Darron Lee and cornerback Daryl Worley were signed by the Bills to their practice squad.

Lee is a former first-round pick of the Jets, while Worley is no slouch himself. Not only was he a third rounder, but the DB played in Sean McDermott’s defense in 2016 with the Panthers.

However, the pair are in a grey area. They only officially got on the practice field this week. Are they ready? At least on Lee, Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott gave us a little hint. McDermott didn’t say no to the idea of at least Lee playing vs. the Seattle Seahawks (6-1) on Sunday.

“It’s possible. Not out of the realm of possibility at this point. It is a short run up, if you will. We’ll have to see how today goes and tomorrow,” the coach told WGR-550 radio on Friday. “It’s just hard to get up to speed in a quick manner like this, but (Lee’s) a guy that’s played varsity snaps before and he’s done some good things. Comes from a good program in college (Ohio State). There’s some positives there as well.”

At linebacker specifically, AJ Klein has filled in for a limited Matt Milano in recent weeks. Milano, Buffalo’s incumbent starter, has a pectoral injury and has played on a “pitch count” due to the injury. That’s caused Milano to struggle, and Klein’s had a tough go of it as well.

In terms of Milano, McDermott, as usual, did not want to give away any hints to his upcoming opponent. The coach wouldn’t say if Milano is not going to play vs. the Seahawks, but he did sound more cautious about Milano, who has not practice this week.

“I just think we’ve been trying to figure out the best approach – figuring out the injury and how the injury affects the player,” McDermott said. “Then trying to do the best thing for the player and then the best thing for the team as well.”

“That’s the delicate balance that we’re always trying to find. And no one has a crystal ball as good as our medical staff is, there’s no crystal ball to be able to exactly pinpoint where things are going to be.” McDermott added.

While the linebacker area has been a position of concern for McDermott’s struggling defense, it’s not alone. Over the middle of the field, slot receivers have beaten up the Bills due to poor play from nickel corner Taron Johnson. Could Worley be the competition Johnson needs there? The Seahawks have receiver Tyler Lockett coming out of there.

It’s still unclear whether or not what will happen with Lee and Worley ahead of facing the Seahawks, but we’ll find out on Saturday, most likely. That’s when the Bills recall players from their practice squad ahead of games, so keep an eye out for both players in the coming day or two.
