WATCH: CBS Sports’ Danny Kanell sings praises of Ohio State wide receivers

Can you name a wide receiver corps that will be better than what Ohio State will have in 2022? #GoBucks

Over the last few years, THE Ohio State football program has become THE destination for wide receivers. Ever since Brian Hartline took the keys to the wide receiver room, he has recruited at a high level and developed guys that make it to the next level. Each year, it seems to be rinse and repeat as well.

As we get ready to kick off the 2022 college football season, it’s looking like the Buckeyes will have one of the best receiving groups in college football again despite losing two guys to the first round of the NFL draft.

Count CBS Sports’ Danny Kanell as a believer. He sang the praises of the Ohio State receivers on a segment on CBS Sports Network, singling out not just Jaxon Smith-Njigba, but Marvin Harrison Jr, Julian Fleming, and Emeka Egbuka.

Oh, and he had some fantastic things to say about Hartline as well.

Kanell isn’t alone in this thought. Many websites and publications believe that the OSU offense will be the best in the country again, and a lot of it has to do with the talented wide receivers Heisman hopeful C.J. Stroud will be throwing the ball to.

National analyst sees Clemson as ‘vulnerable’

Although Clemson’s streak of six straight ACC Championships and six consecutive College Football Playoff appearances came to an end this season, a national college football analyst isn’t writing off Dabo Swinney’s program just yet.

CBS Sports analyst Danny Kanell, who recently joined the Gramlich and Mac Lain podcast with Kelly Gramlich and Eric Mac Lain, isn’t ready to say that Clemson’s reign of dominance in the ACC is over after one relatively down season.

“But I am curious to see what direction he goes in, what happens with these coordinator hires and developing DJ (Uiagalelei),” Kanell said. “So, I get the question marks and I get the concern. But I’m not going to be one that’s saying, right now, ‘Oh, this is the end.’ And guess what else is still there – a lot of talent. So, I don’t think Clemson’s going anywhere anytime yet.”

However, Kanell added that he thinks the Tigers appear “vulnerable” right now, at least to other teams in the conference.

“If I’m another school in the ACC, you’re thinking ‘vulnerable,’” Kanell said. “I think it’s a vulnerability that they haven’t been in, and I think you see it as an opportunity. Let’s freshen up the offense. The defense has still been strong, but let’s see what else we got out there. Then that might be a scary thought for everybody in the ACC.”

National analyst calls out ‘incompetent’ CFP committee for Clemson being unranked

A national analyst took to social media and called out the College Football Playoff selection committee after its latest rankings were unveiled Tuesday night.

CBS Sports college football analyst Danny Kanell took exception to Clemson (7-3, 5-2 ACC) being unranked, with Mississippi State (6-4, 4-3 SEC) being ranked No. 25.

Kanell pointed out that one of the Bulldogs’ losses came at the hands of what is now a 5-5 Memphis team back on Sept. 18, while the Tigers’ three losses came to Georgia, Pittsburgh and NC State — teams that are currently ranked No. 1, No. 18 and No. 20 in the CFP rankings, respectively.

“This committee and this process proves itself over and over to be the absolute worst way to determine a champ. #incompetent,” Kanell wrote in a post on Twitter.

Clemson returns to action Saturday at Death Valley against Wake Forest (9-1, 6-0 ACC), which is now ranked No. 10 in the CFP rankings.

Clemson is still nowhere to be found in this national analyst’s ranking of the top teams in college football after Week 2 of the season.

CBS Sports college football analyst Danny Kanell released his top eight teams via Twitter on Sunday and did not include the Tigers in his list.

Instead, Kanell ranked Alabama, Georgia, Oregon, Iowa, Penn State, UCLA, Notre Dame and Cincinnati 1-8, in that order.

Kanell also did not rank Clemson among his top eight teams after Week 1.

Clemson, which improved to 1-1 on the season after defeating South Carolina State 49-3 on Saturday at Death Valley, remained at No. 6 in both the AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll after Week 2.

Another national analyst is low on Clemson following its 10-3 loss to Georgia last Saturday.

CBS Sports college football analyst Danny Kanell took to Twitter this week with his ranking of the top 8 teams in the sport following Week 1 of the season and did not rank the Tigers among those teams.

Another analyst, RJ Young of FOX Sports, released his top 25 and has the Tigers all the way down at No. 11 in his ranking.

Clemson (0-1) is now ranked No. 6 in both the AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll following the loss to Georgia after previously being ranked No. 3 in the AP Poll and No. 2 in the Coaches Poll.

National analyst makes his picks for the College Football Playoff

During an interview with longtime South Florida sportscaster Tony Segreto, CBS Sports college football analyst Danny Kanell made his picks for this year’s College Football Playoff.

Kanell believes Clemson will make the playoff for the seventh straight year and face a familiar foe in Ohio State.

The Tigers and Buckeyes have met three times in the CFP, with Clemson winning the first two meetings and Ohio State taking last year’s CFP semifinal at the Sugar Bowl.

“I’m going to say Clemson is back,” Kanell said. “And this is a matchup that we see often, and we’ve seen it a lot and I love the rivalry, saw it last year — I’m going to say Clemson, Ohio State play again in one of the matchups in the playoffs, and it would make a lot of sense regionally for Clemson, the tie-in with the ACC, for Clemson. I think Clemson will be the higher seed in the matchup, but I don’t think Ohio State’s going anywhere anytime soon, anyway. So, I think you see Clemson, Ohio State matched up again.”

Kanell also predicted Oklahoma and Alabama to make the playoff this season.

“I think Oklahoma you’ll see in the playoff, as well, and then it’s going to be either Georgia or Alabama from the SEC,” Kanell said. “I’ll go Alabama because until Georgia actually knocks off that top dog, that’s a monumental mountain to climb. They haven’t done it yet. I’ll give Alabama the edge again.”

CBS Sports analyst labels Texas football an underrated team

CBS Sports views Texas as one of the more underrated teams on the AP Poll.

After being absolutely slandered by the media after the initial rankings dropped, CBS Sports analysts Danny Kannel, Chip Patterson, and Tom Fornelli came to the defense of the Longhorns. They labeled Texas as one of the more underrated teams in the nation.

While many people focus on the absence of players like Sam Ehlinger, who Texas lost to the NFL, the analysts at CBS mentioned the offensive mind of Steve Sarkisian, who in their opinion can more than make up for the talent lost.

They are not wrong about that, as although losing Ehlinger, Joseph Ossai, and Samuel Cosmi is tough, the Longhorns now have a much improved coaching staff that has a tremendous track record of developing players during their time at Alabama. For example, in the 2021 NFL draft, Alabama had 10 players selected in total, and seven of those players were coached by a current staff member at Texas.

Obviously the Texas program is a ways away from being the same caliber as Alabama, but being towards the bottom of the AP Poll at No. 21 can be considered underrated.

Texas being more towards the middle would also make sense, as they have an elite offensive mind who will not only scheme up great plays, but he has Bijan Robinson and arguably one of the better running back rooms in the country. The defense is also very experienced, and defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski is known for having top tier units as well. However, Texas has been known to disappoint as of late, so they are not getting any benefit of the doubt, which is totally understandable.

The Longhorns starting this low is a sign of all the unknowns that the program is facing such as a new coach, new defensive coordinator, and most importantly a new quarterback. Texas will have the opportunity to skyrocket up the rankings, especially considering the fact that they have one of the toughest ranked schedules in the nation.

WATCH: Danny Kanell thinks Alabama could win national title in 2020

Danny Kanell is known for giving Alabama a hard time, but this time, Kanell thinks Alabama could actually win a national title this season.

Typically, Danny Kanell is known for giving the Alabama Crimson Tide a hard time about something, but this time, Kanell thinks Alabama could actually win a national title this season.

“Without question, they are completely capable of going toe-to-toe with Clemson, Ohio State, Georgia, Oklahoma — any of the players, as is usual, as is typical situation with an Alabama team,” Kanell said. “They’ve got the talent on the roster. They’ve got the quarterback to do it in Mac Jones, I believe. Now, it’s up to them to go do it.

Historically, the games they’ve lost, they’ve kind of shot themselves in the foot, or they’ve thrown a couple of interceptions like Mac Jones had last year against Auburn, having a couple of pick-sixes, or they have a game that’s a letdown. If they play up to their capability, they will not only make the playoff, they’ll be contending for the national championship in the final game.”

Wow. Those are definitely some surprising words to hear from Danny Kanell regarding the Crimson Tide.

Time will tell what the season holds, including if there even will be a football season since the coronavirus has taken the world by storm. Winter sports championships were cancelled, and all spring semesters were cancelled, including sports.

Alabama is slated to face USC on September 5th.

CBS Sports analyst: ‘I think people are sleeping on the Falcons’

After entering the past two seasons with big expectations, back-to-back 7-9 finishes have caused the Atlanta Falcons to fall out of the national spotlight.

After entering the past two seasons with big expectations, back-to-back 7-9 finishes have caused the Atlanta Falcons to fall out of the national spotlight.

It’s understandable that NFL analysts are somewhat skeptical of buying into the Falcons this season, especially considering the Tampa Bay Buccaneers added quarterback Tom Brady and tight end Rob Gronkowski.

Not everyone is sleeping on Atlanta, though. CBS Sports analyst Danny Kanell recently suggested the team has one of the best offensive trios in the league, with Matt Ryan, Julio Jones and Todd Gurley.
