Seahawks claim QB Jacob Eason off waivers from Colts

Seattle has claimed former Washington quarterback Jacob Eason off waivers from the Colts.

These Seahawks under Pete Carroll love their Huskies. Seattle has claimed former Washington quarterback Jacob Eason off waivers from the Colts.

Eason played two years at Georgia before transferring to Washington, where he had a solid 2019 season. The Colts picked him in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft. He saw no action as a rookie and only threw five passes this year with Carson Wentz out, one of which was an interception.

With Russell Wilson currently on the injured reserve list, the pecking order at QB is Geno Smith first followed by Jake Luton, then Eason, then Danny Etling.

Seahawks elevate 2 players from practice squad ahead of Steelers matchup

With Etling taking over the practice squad-QB role Jake Luton is getting promoted.

The Seattle Seahawks needed another backup quarterback on their roster with QB1 Russell Wilson going on the injured reserve list and Geno Smith slated to start on Sunday night against the Steelers. The team did work out Blake Bortles earlier this week but didn’t sign him. Instead, they added Danny Etling back to their practice squad, where he spent last season.

With Etling taking over the practice squad-QB role Jake Luton is getting promoted. He has been elevated to the 53-man roster. Luton is in his second season in the NFL. He started three games last year for the Jaguars while Gardner Minshew was out, going 0-3 and posting a QBR of 39.9.

Wide receiver Phillip Dorsett has also been elevated from the practice squad. Dorsett also spent last year with the Seahawks, although he only appeared in one game. He was also active last week, but he played just five snaps.

Seahawks add Danny Etling to practice squad, not expected to sign Blake Bortles

Seahawks add Danny Etling to practice squad, not expected to sign Blake Bortles.

The Seahawks have a need for quarterback depth after their starter Russell Wilson went down with a finger injury this past week.

Yesterday, the team brought in former Jaguars and Rams QB Blake Bortles for a workout. However, according to multiple reports, Seattle has no plans to sign Bortles at this time.

The Seahawks aren’t standing still, though. Today the team announced that they have signed quarterback Danny Etling to their practice squad. They also made the reported release of cornerback Tre Flowers official.

Etling spent last season on Seattle’s practice squad and has also put in time with the Patriots, Falcons and Vikings.

There are definitely more capable QBs still on the market, but Seattle being content not to bring in competition for Geno Smith might be an indication Russell Wilson could return sooner then expected. Not placing Wilson on the injured reserve list as of yet is another.

Some impressive Max Johnson numbers following LSU’s win over Mississippi State

Max Johnson did something on Saturday that hasn’t been done by an LSU QB since Danny Etling in 2016.

Tigers quarterback Max Johnson led LSU to a 28-25 victory over Mississippi State on Saturday. While doing so, he put up some impressive numbers and extended a Football Bowl Subdivision-leading streak.

Johnson’s four touchdown passes gave him six straight games with three or more touchdown passes. Last week Johnson became the first LSU quarterback to throw for at least three touchdowns in each of his first five starts. That trend continued Saturday in the win over the Bulldogs.

Johnson was 17 for 27 for 280 yards and four touchdowns in Starkville. He threw one interception.

Johnson is the first Tigers quarterback to put up multiple touchdowns of 55-plus yards in a game since 2016 when Danny Etling did it, according to the ESPN broadcast of Saturday’s game.

Johnson also became the first quarterback since Rohan Davey to pass for three touchdowns of over 40 yards in the same game, according to Glen West of Sports Illustrated.

Johnson praised the defense in his postgame comments and gave the unit a lot of credit for the win. The LSU defense held Mississippi State to three points in the first half as Johnson and the offense came to life in the second half. He also credited offensive coordinator Jake Peetz for dialing up great plays throughout.

Johnson, on the season, has thrown for 1,144 yards and 15 touchdowns, including six of 40-plus yards.

By the numbers: How quarterbacks have fared under Ed Orgeron

A season-by-season look at QBs under Ed Orgeron as the head coach.

Over the years under Ed Orgeron, there have been several notable quarterbacks to suit up for him. Not exactly murderer’s row, but Joe Burrow certainly proved his worth during the 2019 season.

His first tenure as head coach from 2005-07 with the Mississippi Rebels, but that string of quarterbacks was anything but spectacular. A large part of the reason Orgeron went 10-25 and 3-21 in SEC play during that three-year span. It wouldn’t be until the 2013 season he would get another crack as a head coach.

In that one interim season following the firing of Lane Kiffin, Orgeron went 6-2. The same eight-game record he would eventually have as the interim at LSU following the Les Miles firing. At USC he would have an eventual NFL quarterback Cody Kessler under center.

At LSU, we have seen Danny Etling, Joe Burrow, Myles Brennan, TJ Finley, and finally Max Johnson. While Orgeron is a defensive coach, he still has to put his players into a position to be successful. A season-by-season look at how the quarterbacks have fared for the current Tigers head coach.

Vikings nab a pair of quarterbacks

The Minnesota Vikings have signed Case Cookus and claimed Danny Etling off waivers.

With most of the Vikings quarterback room on the Reserve/Covid-19 list, Minnesota has done its due diligence in trying to find new quarterbacks.

The team tried out a couple quarterbacks this week. Now, the team has signed quarterback Case Cookus and claimed quarterback Danny Etling off waivers.

Etling was drafted by the Patriots in the seventh round of 2018. From there, Etling made the switch to wide receiver, before going back to quarterback full time when he was claimed by the Falcons. Besides New England and Atlanta, he also had a stint with Seattle.

Cookus was brought in for a workout earlier this week. He had brief stints with the Giants and Broncos before signing with the Vikings.

Neither Cookus nor Etling have regular season NFL experience. These moves are more to fill out the quarterback room amid Kellen Mond’s positive test.

On Friday, Jake Browning was the only quarterback available for practice. Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said of Browning: “He’s vaccinated. That helps to be the backup.” Right now, it appears Browning has made a good case to be the backup, based on what the team has said publicly.

Seahawks sign veteran QB Sean Mannion, waive QB Danny Etling to make room

The Seattle Seahawks have signed veteran quarterback Sean Mannion and waived quarterback Danny Etling to make room on the 90-man roster.

The Seahawks announced a couple of personnel moves on Sunday afternoon during the players’ off day. Seattle has signed veteran quarterback Sean Mannion and waived quarterback Danny Etling to make room on the 90-man roster.

Mannion was originally selected in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft by the Rams out of Oregon State and spent four seasons with the team. He then signed with the Vikings and provided depth for Minnesota the last two years.

Over his six-year career, Mannion started two of his 13 total games played and completed 45 of 74 passes attempted for 384 yards, three interceptions and no touchdowns.

In Seattle, Mannion will reunite with Shane Waldron, who was with the Rams during two of his four seasons with the club.

The Seahawks return to practice at the VMAC on Monday morning.

The former LSU football player has held his first annual camp.

Over 200 high schoolers from all over Vigo County showed out to receive guidance and tips from the pros.

The camp took place from 9:30 A.M-2:30 p.m. and was free of charge.

[lawrence-related id=18574]

“The camp meant so much to me. I remember when former NFL players and coaches would come back to Terre Haute to talk with me when I was in high school and it helped to get me where I am today,” Etling said.

“So it meant a lot to me to have Coach Cameron, Jacob Tui, Foster Moreau and Lindsey Scott come back and get to share those people who have been so influential in my own journey, and share their journeys and attitudes with my hometown and with the kids.”

The kids received a Danny Etling Football Camp t-shirt at the conclusion of the event.

Etling and Moreau also partook in a fundraiser called “Trick Shots For Charity” before calling it a day.

Way Back Wednesday: Troy defeats LSU 24-21, forces four Tigers turnovers

The Tigers lost in a significant Troy upset three years ago today.

The LSU Tigers opened the 2020 season with a disappointing 44-34 loss to the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

It was an unexpected one, considering the Tigers were 16.5-point favorites heading into the matchup. LSU is no stranger to unlikely losses though, save last year’s historical season.

Under Ed Orgeron during the 2017 season, LSU entered its matchup against the Troy Trojans as the favorite by three touchdowns. Instead, LSU recorded an embarrassing 24-21 loss that still stings for Tigers fans to this day.

With the victory, Troy became the the first team from outside the Southeastern Conference to win on the Tigers’ turf since UAB back in 2000.

[lawrence-related id=11264]

They also ended the Tigers’ streak of 49 consecutive home victories over non-league opponents.

The Trojans were dominant early on in the matchup, putting up leads of 17-0 and 24-7 before a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown passes from quarterback Danny Etling to Russell Gage and Foster Moreau brought LSU within a field goal.

But a failed onside kick and a Blace Brown interception at the Troy 42 with 11 seconds left in the game sealed LSU’s fate.

Troy forced four turnovers on the day, with Etling and fellow quarterback Myles Brennan each throwing an interception.

[lawrence-related id=11262]

Head coach Ed Orgeron said the Tigers didn’t downplay their opponent, and that it was more about overall team performance.

“We did not look past Troy,” he said after the game. “This was about us. We did not play well.”

The 2020 Tigers will look to redeem themselves as they travel to Nashville, Tennessee to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores at 6:30 p.m. CST on Saturday in Vanderbilt Stadium.

On thing that sticks out about this year’s Vandy team is that it looks stronger — and could have a similar type of sneaky upset potential that the Trojans proved to have three years ago.

[lawrence-related id=11231]

The Commodores came within five points of the Texas A&M Aggies last week, and the team has a respectable quarterback in Ken Seals, who completed 20-of-29 passing attempts for 150 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the loss.

It will be interesting to see how this one shakes out as the Tigers have a lot of fixing to do moving forward this year.

LSU’s best wins vs. Florida: 2017 season

The 2017 edition of the LSU-Florida football rivalry was one of the best games in the all-time series.

[jwplayer hU7DVyfz-er0jUifI]

The 2017 edition of the LSU-Florida football rivalry was one of the best games in the all-time series.

The Tigers went into the game with a 3-2 record, and the Gators entered No. 21 in the country with a 2-2 record.

LSU opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 22-yard run by wide receiver Russell Gage with 1:22 left in the quarter.

In the second quarter, both teams scored three points on field goals. Florida kicker Eddie Pineiro kicked a 25-yard field goal with 4:01 left before halftime, and with 25 seconds before the break, Tigers kicker Connor Culp booted a 38-yard field goal. The Tigers led 10-3 as they headed into the locker room for the half.

[lawrence-related id=10978]

The second half scoring got started with 10:56 left in the third quarter as Tory Carter caught a 2-yard pass from Tigers quarterback Danny Etling to put LSU up 17-3.

Florida would score the final 13 points of the game. With 7:39 left in the third, Gators running back Lamical Perine ran into the end zone from two yards out for the score to cut the deficit to 17-10. Then with 1:45 remaining in the quarter, Perine again scored to make it a 17-16 LSU lead.

This game, from a defensive standpoint, goes down as one of the best in the series. The Tigers totaled 341 yards of offense compared to Florida’s 302 yards. While those statistics sound like a good chunk of yards, both defenses played stellar in the game.

Etling finished 9-of-16 passing for 125 yards and one touchdown. Gage led the team in rushing with 52 yards and a touchdown on six carries. For Florida, Feleipe Franks finished 10-of-16 passing for 108 yards.

The win pushed the Tigers to a 4-2 record on the season and 1-1 in SEC play. The Gators fell to 2-2 on the season with the loss.
